BMW 5 Series (F10/F11) buying advice - Duration: 9:51.

This generation BMW 5-Series has a less pronounced design than its predecessor.

That was the Chris Bangle 5-Series that didn't have the weird trunk lid of the 7-Series,

but it was still noticeable. This one is gentlemanly, maybe a bit boring.

I think a 5-Series like this one could use an M Sport package to make it look better.

Anyway, that's personal. These are fantastic cars.

You don't need more. It has plenty of room and performance, all options are available,

there's a wide range of diesel and gasoline engines, AWD is available, AT or MT...

Almost no one chose that, but a manual transmission was available as well.

It's not the ideal car, but this segment... The same goes for the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class.

Do you need more? No, most people don't.

The range in engines is huge. Most engines have 4 cylinders, especially those in the Netherlands.

There are a lot of different versions, starting at 141 hp up to 592 hp.

That'd be the M5, which is beyond the scope of this video, but it's a 5-Series as well.

There's everything in between.

Diesel engines range from 141 to 376 hp, gasoline engines range from 181 to 592 hp.

Fantastic. There's one for everyone.

ENGINES gasoline, diesel

800 of this generation BMW 5-Series are for sale on Marktplaats, which is a lot.

A manual transmission is rare. That's not strange in this class.

5% of the cars for sale. Some fans like it, but it's difficult when selling it on.

A car like this needs an automatic transmission.

Diesel-gasoline and touring-sedan are both 50-50. Choose what you like.

Prices vary from 20,000 euros to way over 100,000 euros for a very recent or new M5.

PRICES minimum, maximum

There are things to watch out for, but it's not that bad. It could've been worse.

There are complaints about the windshield. People don't like reflections in the windshield.

This car has the optional head-up display, but the 5-Series' windshield is susceptible to chip damage.

Problems with the suspension... A touring comes with rear air suspension.

The struts can start leaking, which is an expensive repair.

The pump can break as well.

Often, the bellows go first, stressing the pump, which breaks, and there you go.

Another thing: rubber at the shock absorbers dries out and tears.

You can only see these tears with the wheels hanging down on a lift.

You don't feel much when driving, so if you don't know, it's not there.

This generation 5-Series comes with run-flat tires.

This means you can keep going on a flat with a maximum speed of 80 kph (50 mph) for a while.

These have more rigid side walls (the sides of the tires) to keep you going when there's no air in them.

This is easily damaged by potholes. I don't think we have a proper Dutch word for this.

Holes in the road. These damage the tires, causing lumps or tears. That's something to keep in mind.

There are no frequent structural problems with the engines.

It can happen, but the 520d, the N47 engine, has a chain tensioner and timing chain.

That's a well-known problem in these videos.

The chain can stretch and the chain tensioner can break. You hear this during a cold start

and it'll rattle at 1,500 rpm. Don't keep driving like this, because it'll destroy the engine.

The automatic transmission returns in these videos as well.

BMW says you don't have to do anything with it, ever.

We know better. Changing oil and an occasional flush extends the life expectancy

and makes for smoother shifts. Keep that in mind and do this when there are more miles on the clock.

A BMW 5-Series can have many electronics, optional and standard.

Much is operated electronically. This means you have to check if everything works.

It doesn't have a bad reputation, but there can be expensive problems.

Check all the buttons. There are some specific things that stand out.

The rear-view camera, for example. When you get an error while in reverse,

you'd expect it to be a software problem, but it's caused by the wiring or camera unit itself.

There can be many cameras on a 5-Series, not just the rear,

but the sides and up front as well to see everything around you.

If something is wrong, you know how it goes.

The gear selector is electronically operated. You don't move it physically.

If you put it in Drive Sport (to the left), it goes into sport mode.

In some cases this no longer works.

You'd think a reset would fix it, but the entire gear unit needs to be replaced.

Again, that's expensive. Another thing to check is the heating in the seats.

It frequently breaks in this generation 5-Series.

Switch it on, for the passenger as well, and make sure you feel it get warm.

It takes a while. It's not warm after 2 minutes. You need to feel something after driving for 10 minutes.

Another thing is comfort access, as BMW calls it. This is keyless entry and keyless go.

You can keep your key in your pocket and you don't have to unlock it with the key or remote.

This works with antennas. Make sure to check this for every door of the 5-Series.

A 3-Series only has it on the front doors. Savings.

There can be errors with warm weather and it won't work.

You need to keep the key close to the dashboard to start the engine.

The heat causes a connection to go bad.

It won't work correctly. The final thing to watch out for causes you to strand at the side of the road

or to be unable to leave the parking lot. Water in the battery box, in the rear.

If you have a trunk... Most BMWs have one because it's better for the weight distribution.

If water gets in, certain areas short circuit.

For example, the electronic parking brake won't release. That's inconvenient.

It can also disrupt the fuel supply. If the engine doesn't get fuel, it won't start.

This car...

It is a very sexy edition.

It was a demo of BMW NL to show a number of things, so it has everything.

Everything. Adaptive cruise control, night vision, and an Individual interior with a wooden steering wheel.

I would never order it like this, but when I see it I think it's incredibly beautiful.

The white wedding dress was once a statement of her purity.

Tradition has changed, though, and the once virgin-esque bride has been replaced with

women that are apt to choose personal tastes over age-old customs.

With personal taste comes a variety of different types of dresses, and it's from this variety

that we pulled the subjects of this installment - the 10 worst wedding dresses!

10.

The Rainbow Goddess We don't take pleasure in tearing apart a

blushing bride's wedding day choice.

Unless, of course, it's something like this intricate mix of colors and fabric.

The rainbow motif of this wedding is evident from the train up to the bride's hair, so

much so that even the groom is donning his own colorful button down.

The stark contrast from the black fabric to the more colorful stripes is jarring, like

a goth wedding that's making a statement on gay pride.

The couple looks happy, though, so maybe if we just concentrate on their smiles we can

enjoy this pictu- … Nope, no.

Dress is way too distracting to ignore.

The Grass Skirt Getting married on a tropical paradise and

you want to somehow match the rather Hawaiian vibes you get from your outdoor affair?

How about this pointy monster, which is either a wedding dress made from a grass skirt or

a really weird tribute to The Addam's Family's Cousin It.

As if the oversized grass skirt wasn't enough of a turn-off, the dress is a brown fiend,

calling forth images of vast, empty desert more than anything remotely tropical.

Maybe that's the purpose of it?

Maybe it's supposed to instill feelings of emptiness and dread.

If that's the case, kudos to its designer.

It works.

8.

The Pearl Nightmare Every woman loves pearls.

The color, their shape, the glistening luster that shines in all light; but how many women

love them enough to wear an entire dress made out of faux pearls?

The quirky dress, complete with a pearly bouquet and matching hat, is likely an interconnected

mess of perfectly spaced pearl-colored balloons that cover a much needed white slip.

The dress is successful in capturing the real essence of pearls, but there is a chance it

may just be a little too heavy on the fake adornments and a little too tempting to pop.

Catwoman Should Batman and on-again-off-again love

interest Selina Kyle ever decide to tie the knot, this white gown of misery would probably

be in the ballpark of what she'd wear.

Dolores, a 21-year-old bride from the travesty that is My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding adorned a

wedding gown embellished with a silver-lined cat-print and the words "Baby Phatt" spelled

out in crystals on the bottom.

The most devastating part is that if not for the quirky additions, the gown actually would

have been pretty nice; but nothing sucks the class out of a wedding dress quicker than

crystals spelling out the word "Phatt" in predominant form.

The Knitted Madness Oh dear...

Grandma found the Red Bull and went crazy with the knitting needles again!

Actually, this cocooned monster is part of French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent's

couture wedding line.

The design came about in 1965, pulling inspiration from Russian nesting dolls, and it's been

a fashion icon ever since.

That doesn't mean the potential of being one of the worst things to ever walk down an aisle

isn't there.

The cocoon dress certainly does embody couture… and that's about the only positive thing we

have to say about it.

The Ursula Everything must be really better down where

it's wetter?

That's the only way we could imagine this dress ever being acceptable attire for any

sort of formal occasion.

Beyond the tulle fabric that only serves to cheapen the look of an otherwise decent looking

gown, the dress is pretty impractical.

You either let your four tentacles drag across the ground, collecting whatever happens to

fall to the floor, or you're stuck holding them up and looking like you're carrying two

water buckets back from the crick.

Maybe there's an octopi couple out there that will benefit from it, though.. who knows.

The Diaper Do you love the smell of babies so much that

you would do anything to encase yourself in it at any occasion?

Lucky for you, there's a dress out there that can answer the call on your most special of

days!

This diaper dress is unique, to say the least, and absolutely absurd, if we're aiming to

fully define it.

While it must be a comfortable fit for the bride-to-be, for those that have to watch

it swish down the aisle, it's a visual travesty that should leave one concerned over what

other surprises this affair may have in store.

The Cocoon The blushing bride encloses herself in a cocoon

of pink and floral arrangements where she'll go through a metamorphosis, changing into

a scraggly old hag that sucks the life force from children.

At least, that's our version of why this dress was brought into existence.

We can't think of any other reason as to why the bride's limbs would be cinched within

what we assume doubles as a torture device.

The only other explanation we can muster is that this couple really loved snowmen, flowers,

and the color pink, and this was the perfect combination of the 3 elements that define

their love.

The Walking Condom A fashion statement and a walking advertisement

for safe sex.

We could be in love with this idea, but there is just so much wrong with a dress made out

of condoms.

Outside of being visually unappealing, the dress has to have some sort of unwanted rubbery

aroma to it, one that, due to the sheer number of rubbers used, would transfer to just about

everything the glowing bride walked by.

The one perk that must come with a dress made entirely of condoms, for the bride to have

a good and safe time, all she has to do is start dismantling her gown.

(hmmm, we wonder if they pre-lubricated … but we shall not go down that slippery slope.)

The Not-Safe-For-Kids How to put this in the least crass way possible…

"Girl, that dress does not have enough support for what you're packin'!"

We have to wonder if this after-party dress somehow got mixed up with the real gown, which

offered plenty of coverage for the two grapefruits this bride is obviously not ashamed to show

off.

While perfect for a Playboy-themed wedding, its place in a black-tie formal affair is

questionable.

Hopefully, she doesn't plan on doing a lot of heavy dancing… else there may be a few

accidental casualties when the little support she does have gives out completely.

(Our guess is that this is a case of what you see is what you get.)

In the last video we have seen how to encode information in general

In this video we will see how to make the information as small as possible in the computer

We will talk about compression

We must distinguish two types of compression : lossless compression and lossy compression

lossless compression is used for example for text or zip folder

which means we can't allow to lose any information

on the other hand with lossy compression, which is used typically for image, sound, video

we can afford to lose some information

So for an image if I don't encode all information it won't be too perceptible by the human eye

so we can afford to discard that information

Let's start with lossless compression

There are several methods, we are gonna see one called Huffman encoding

The idea is intuitive : in a text you have characters appearing more often than others

So we could encode the most frequent ones with a short sequence of bits

and the rarest ones with a long sequence of bits

If you take for example a string with only 5 different characters a,b,c,d,e

We have seen last time how we can encode each letter with a sequence of bits

but the same length for each letter

But actually it is not necessary we can encode each letter with a sequence of different length

The list of letters along with their encoding sequences is called a encoding dictionary

we can easily represent these encoding with what we call an encoding tree, like this

another way to calculate the compression is with the probabilities of each symbol's appearance

so for example if you consider 'a' there are 200 'a' in the text out of 1000 characters

so the probability that a given symbol is an 'a' is 0.2

similarly for the other symbols we have these probabilities

We can now calculate the mean length of a symbol in bits

to that end we sum over all probabilities multiplied by their sequence length

So for the first dictionary it gives us a mean length of 3 bits per symbol

and for the second dictionary it gives us a mean of 2.1 bits per symbol

We could wonder if we tried a third dictionary if we could achieve an even better compression

But we won't test all possible encodings to find the one that gives us an optimal compression

For that we have a method called the Huffman algorithm that allows us to find the perfect encoding that maximizes the compression

We will in another module exactly what is an algorithm in details

but for now you only need to know that it is like a recipe, a method to solve a problem

In our case we have list of symbols with their probabilities and we want a method to find

the optimal encoding maximizing the compression

So with the Huffman algorithm we will construct an optimal tree

I will write the different symbols along with their probabilities

and put them together to build the tree from these 2 symbols

With the Huffman algorithm we could compress even more

We can prove, but we won't do it here, that the Huffman algorithm is always optimal

which means there is no other better encoding to compress

Now if we have a text of 200 pages with 1000 characters per page so 200000 characters

we will see how many bits it takes with our different encodings

If we take our first encoding it gives us **on screen**

With our second modified encoding : **on screen**

and if we take our third encoding with the Huffman algorithm it gives us : **on screen**

Let's move on to lossy compression

There are several methods, I will present here the main method

In essence, information like images, sound or videos can be seen as a signal with frequencies

This way we can compress information a lot
