Do-more Designer - Quick Start - Duration: 4:02.
Plugging a USB cable from your computer into the Do-more PLC is the easiest way to get
started because it doesn't require any Ethernet or Serial Port setup.
Power up the PLC and you'll hear the familiar Windows connected sound.
When you start Do-more Designer, you can choose if you want to work on a previous project,
create a new one off line from a PLC or in our case we want to create a new on-line project.
If you have an existing link to a PLC you can click on it here.
We have a new PLC so we'll click ADD to create a new link.
We're connected via USB, and Do-more Designer shows us the one PLC that is connected via
USB.
Give the new link a name and now we can select that guy as the PLC we want to work with.
We can skip these dialogs for now.
Since we're connected to a Do-more PLC, we get a dashboard with an image of that PLC,
groupings of all the things we can do with the PLC and hot spots right on the PLC so
you can just point and click to configure whatever part of the PLC you want without
having to search through a bunch of menus.
We really just want to start writing ladder code so just click on View/Edit Program.
I've been using this PLC so let's reset it back to factory default.
Normally you want to clear everything BUT the system settings because it has the Ethernet
settings you need to communicate with the PLC, if you are using Ethernet.
We're using USB so it doesn't matter, so let's take it all the way back to factory
default.
Are we sure?
Yep.
The clock is fine and we don't need to change the system configuration.
Great, we now have a clean factory fresh PLC.
This little exclamation point is reminding us that we don't have a current project
in the PLC – we know that – we just cleared the memory – right?
That will go away when we write our first project.
Move the switch to STOP and then to TERM.
Great, our systems should be in sync.
In ladder programming our goal is to get power to flow from this power rail, through some
controlling logic over to this output column.
This hollow cursor reminds me I'm not in edit mode, so I'll click on the edit button.
The cursor becomes solid and our instruction toolbox appears.
Let's un-pin that so we have more room to work.
Let's grab a normally open contact and drop it on the first rung.
Let's use the X0 input.
Ok, let's grab an output coil and drop it in the output column.
Let's drive the Y0 output.
The yellow bar reminds me that I haven't accepted this program yet so I'll do that.
This is kinda like compiling – Do-more designer checks everything to make sure it is ready
to transfer to the PLC.
Now I get a green bar which tells me the change hasn't been saved and the blue bar which
says it hasn't been written to the PLC yet.
Let's save it – green bar goes away.
And let's write it to the PLC and the blue bar goes away.
Perfect.
I see down here that the PLC is in terminal mode so I'll reach over and flip its switch
to RUN.
Now it says the switch is in RUN mode and that the PLC is in fact running the program.
I wired a push button to input X0, so if we enable status monitoring, and I press that
button, sure enough we see output Y0 go active.
Exactly what we expected.
Well … That's all there is to connecting to a PLC via USB, writing a quick program,
and transferring it to the PLC.

Do-more Designer - Architecture - Duration: 5:22.
We saw in the quick start video that writing a simple program for a Do-more PLC is quick
and easy and that's because Do-more does so much for you.
Writing a program that uses more resources like com ports or servers is just as quick
and easy if you understand 3 key things about the Do-more architecture.
Number one: Devices.
It's important to understand that your program doesn't talk directly to the hardware.
Instead, your program tells a software interface how it wants the hardware to behave, and that
interface – which we call a device - controls the hardware.
The beauty of the device is it knows how to handle the hardware for whatever you set it
up to do.
It takes all the low level buffer management, handshaking, error processing, etc. off your
back.
For example, the serial port is a hardware thing, but maybe I want it to behave as a
simple ASCII streaming device.
I select that interface - or device – tweak the settings and I'm done.
Now when I send data the device takes acre of all the low level details.
If I want that port to behave as a Modbus RTU Client, I select that device, tweak a
similar list of things - the device only asks you for the things it needs - and now it's
ready.
If I want an instruction to send data to the Modbus RTU client we just setup, I just select
that and I'm done.
Now all data from this instruction will use the RTU client.
If I want to switch to use the built-in Ethernet port, I just select that.
Done.
No other changes to the program or the configuration.
What if I wanted to send data out an add-on serial port module and I haven't setup the
device yet?
Well look at this.
You can setup the new serial port device - which Do-more created for you automatically - right
from within the instruction!
Now just use that device and away you go.
We just setup three different ways to get data out of the Do-more and all we did was
swap out devices!
That's the power of this device centric model.
Most instructions don't need devices – like reading or writing directly to I/O.
But even in that case the program still doesn't talk to the hardware – it writes to memory
which is mapped directly to hardware through a device.
So the key take away here is only devices talk directly to hardware.
Which is why we say the Do-more PLC is device centric.
Devices isolate you from all the low level stuff so you can just focus on what needs
to get done and not worry about the how.
The Device does it for you.
Key Thing number two: Memory Like most of today's modern programming
languages, Do-more's memory is strongly typed.
Which means, Do-more knows exactly what each memory location is intended to represent.
It doesn't have to guess if a particular memory location is an unsigned or signed integer,
for example.
And because if fundamentally knows what each memory type represents, you can do things
like compare a real number with an integer or even do math on mixed memory types.
And here's a great example: Suppose you have 10 inputs and you need to know if any
7 are active.
That would be a HUGE task to do in ladder code.
But Do-more knows inputs are a binary type, so you can just sum all 10 inputs and if,
that sum, is greater than or equal to 7, turn the output on, otherwise turn it off.
How about that?
That's the power of Do-more's typing.
It just works.
Which makes your programming life a whole lot easier.
Number three: System Configuration.
Do-more is setup by default to handle basic projects mostly because its smart enough to
figure a lot of things out on it's own like when you add extra I/O modules – that's
all automatic.
You don't have to do anything except use them and if necessary maybe setup a few things
right from the dashboard.
So many times that's all you'll ever need.
As your projects start using more and more resources and devices, then you'll want
to use the system configuration dialog because you can customize the hardware, devices, servers,
and even modify the memory usage.
The key thing to remember is, you'll want to start at the top and work your way down.
Why?
Because each item in this configuration can affect the items below it.
So first you configure the CPU which can affect all of these items, then you configure the
I/O which can affect all of these items, then you configure the modules, then the devices,
etc.
The cool thing about starting at the top and working your way down, is when you reach the
bottom you know you haven't missed anything and all the bases are covered.
Can you jump in the middle and change something if you want to?
Sure.
Just remember it can affect the items below it.
Of course, anytime you change the system configuration, it needs to be written to the PLC to take
affect.
Well that's it.

The instruction has two power rail connections.
One for the up count and one for the reset.
Notice that the Up input is edge triggered.
When the count is equal or greater than the preset the Done bit will turn on.
When this reset rung is turned on the accumulated count will be set to zero.
If the reset rung is true the counter will not count.

This is a list of the most common questions the AutomationDirect support team gets on
Do-more PLCs.
We thought we would share the answers to hopefully save you from struggling with them yourself.
Number 1: How do I connect my computer to my Do-more PLC?
Connecting via USB is easy and we show you how to do that in the second video on the
startup page of Do-more Designer.
Connecting via Ethernet is just as easy, but there are a couple different ways to do it
and you have to make it compatible with your existing Ethernet Network.
Those steps are shown in this brief video.
Number 2: When should you use a Task a Program a subroutine or an ISR?
Use a Program if you want to use Stages or your logic takes multiple scans, like when
doing communications or timers for example.
Use a Task if you know your logic just needs one pass through the code, even if it needs
to be done over multiple scans.
Create a subroutine for a function you want to use over and over again and be able to
pass variables to.
And use Interrupt Service Routines for your interrupt I/O.
Number 3: Ethernet I/O is an excellent way to get more
I/O's on your base PLC.
You just plug a Do-more PLC with an Ethernet port into a network with DirectLogic or Terminator
bases with EBC controllers – not the regular CPU's- and enable the Ethernet I/O on the
Do-more.
You now have a ton of I/O that appear to the Do-more as simple local I/O.

Number 4: Modbus Communications.
Connecting a Do-more PLC to a device via Modbus is simple.
It can be a Modbus Client or a Server and it can use Modbus RTU over serial, or Modbus
TCP over Ethernet.
Number 5: PID If you haven't done it before, let's face
it - PID can be intimidating.
The good news is Do-more PLCs make setting up PID simple and straight forward.
Do-more Designer even has tools to help you visualize and tune the loops.
This is a really big subject so look in the video library for some tutorials on how to
setup and use PID.
Number 6: Casting Have you ever had to take a word of data and
pull a byte or one bit out of it for a comparison or to format it for transfer?
It's a pain – right?
Casting gives you a superfast shortcut around all of those programming headaches.
With casting you can convert any memory type into any other on the fly without having to
do a lot of math and bit shifting and byte a swapping, and all that yucky stuff.
The help topic covers every possible way you can cast one thing into another so take a
look at that to learn more.
And check this out.
In the element browser, this little button down here is awesome.
Suppose I want to take a V memory element and pull one bit out of it.
Look – it shows me the exact format I need to use!
How about a taking signed word and pulling out a byte, the upper byte and we want it
unsigned.
There's the exact format I need.
So when in doubt, use the cast builder – it's quick and easy.
Once you get the hang of it, casting will quickly become one of your favorite programming
tools.
Number 7: Peerlink Peerlink is one of the easiest ways to share
data between any mix of Do-more PLCs and DirectLogic PLCs.
Number 8: Communications Do-more PLCs have lots of ways to communicate
with other PLCs and other devices.
Again, The Do-more video library has step by step examples showing how to use those
so we're not going to spend time on it here.

Designer: Using the RSTCT Instruction - Duration: 0:25.
This instruction can be used to reset any Counter.
It is the proper method of Resetting a Global up down Counter.
Here is an example of that application.
Notice that this counter does not have a reset power rail, so the Reset counter is the only
means to reset it.

Do-more Designer - Troubleshooting - Duration: 5:08.
Do-more designer has a lot of tools you can use to debug and troubleshoot your programs.
We'll take a quick spin through them in this video, and point you towards other videos
where you can learn more.
The dashboard is a great place to look for issues because it shows you pretty much the
entire system at a glance.
For example, I see it's reminding me that the firmware is not the latest version.
How would I fix that?
Just click on it and it takes you right to the dialog you need to see what your options
are.
This example says there is something wrong with the I/O system.
How do you fix it?
Just click on it and again it takes you to right where you need to go to figure it out.
And that's the key with the dashboard – if you see anything that looks out of place,
all you have to do is click on it and Do-more Designer will walk you right down the path
needed to solve the issue.
Here's a little test program for us to play with.
The quickest way to see what's going on is to click on all status.
If I change the inputs on the PLC, then we see the results right on the screen which
makes it super easy to visualize how power flows through the contacts and instructions.
Keep in mind these are updated at the bottom of the scan – not during the scan.
Dataviews are another quick way to quickly see what's going on.
You just put whatever you want to monitor here and with status on, you see the current
values.
You can monitor anything here, strings, structures, done bits, and any memory location in the
entire system.
You can also change values - press the edit button, enter a value and if you watch the
current value while I hit the write button, sure enough it changes.
Keep in mind that if you write to an input in the dataview, that's going to get overwritten
on the next scan making whatever you wrote go away.
Same thing applies to any outputs the program is writing to.
That's easy to forget so keep that in mind.
While you can't change an input using the data view you CAN force it to do what you
want.
Suppose you need to ignore a certain input.
That's where forces come in handy.
You can override any I/O point or memory value using this table, right clicking on an element
or right clicking on a data view entry.
By the way, did you know that if you are NOT I edit mode and you double click on a contact
you can change its value right there?
Or any value you want.
That's really great for those times when you just want to mess with one value and don't
want to brig up a whole dataview to do it.
Just click on the value and hit the write button.
Trend views monitor data so you can see how things change over time.
You can change the scale and even pause the trending with this history button so you can
scroll back in time and see the history of the data.
To create a trend view you could push the trend view button and add items to it manually,
but look at this.
If you right click on an instruction you can just select trend and it automagically fills
in the trend view for you.
You can then add or remove items till your hearts content.
Speaking of Trend Views, some instructions even have little mini trend views built in.
Just turn on status to see it.
If you have a program with lots of programs, or tasks and subroutines, expand those over
here and if status is enabled, you will see which of them are currently in use.
You can even see which stages of your stage program are active.
I love this because at a glance I can see if I'm stuck in one stage or one routine
or if a task is even being executed and how often.
Do-more Designer has a built-in debugger.
You just click on debug and you can now pause the program, issue just a single scan, multiple
scans, manage suspended tasks, monitor the current scan time of the PLC, etc.
There's even PID overviews and viewing tools so you can monitor and adjust your PID loops.
And don't forget the simulator for debugging– it's a great way to verify code independent
of the hardware and it has a built in PID simulator too!

Notice you are delaying the point at which the output turns on.
This on delay time starts from the leading edge of the input signal.
The input must remain on during the on delay time in order for the output to turn on.
The output will then turn off as soon as the input turns off.
Here is an example of using this timer to delay turning on an output by 5 seconds.
If you use a variable for the delay make sure to note that this is in milliseconds

The main difference between the Accumulating Timer and a regular timer instruction is that
the Accumulating Timer has a dedicated reset power rail and will maintain the time until
the reset rail becomes true.
If the reset rail is true it will reset the time to zero.
The reset rail must be false for the timer to start timing.
