In this video series, we explore how strength training
can benefit your running routine by helping you
prevent injuries and optimize your performance.
We teamed up with Catalyst SPORT to learn more.
- I'm Jason Kapnick.
- And I'm Joe Boffi.
- We're the co-founders, along with Dr. Kathy Dooley,
of Catalyst Sport.
We have a clinic where we provide chiropractic,
physical therapy, massage and acupuncture and from
the fitness side, we do private training as well as
semi-private training.
- Catalyst has been around for about two and half years.
- Our mission is to empower people to change their bodies
and change their lives by helping them to feel good,
move well and get strong.
- There can be confusion for what exercise is best
to address our specific needs as runners.
One big question I have for them is
so what is strength training?
- Strength training is performing exercises
that make your body stronger.
Strength training has so many benefits for runners.
We found that runners that get stronger, they get hurt less,
they have more efficient gait, they tend to set PRs
after doing some strength training.
- Your times will decrease because you're producing
more force into the ground 'cause you're stronger
so you become faster.
- The other thing that strength training can benefit
runners for is it gives them an opportunity to correct
movement patterns.
Something like the dead lift for example is gonna help
them to maintain good hip extension and strength
in the glutes and abs.
- Exercises that work well for runners are
a kettle bell dead lift, a push up or a core exercise
called the dying bug.
