Here are the scariest things that just may be lurking around you!
9 - "Yuuuuge" Spider It's just like a terrifying scene straight
out of a Harry Potter movie, except this time, it's real.
Photos of a giant huntsman spider that was rescued in Queensland, Australia in 2015 went
viral — and people couldn't believe their eyes!
A local animal sanctuary that rescued the spider confirmed that the spider definitely
wasn't a Photoshop. Though alarmingly large, huntsman spiders
— with leg spans of up to 12 inches — are generally known to be gentle, harmless creatures.
So if you find one wandering in your back yard…try not to panic.
The spider from the viral photo, who's since been named Charlotte was discovered in an
old farmhouse. Normally, when Betty from Barnyard Betty's
Rescue tries to catch a spider, she pops a glass over them on the wall and then slides
some paper underneath. But when she saw the size of Charlotte, she knew she needed a new
plan. Charlotte was the size of a dinner plate,
so she needed to grab a broom and "convince" the spider to climb on to the head of the
broom. After snapping the photos that went viral,
Betty released the spider into an old shed where she knew she'd be safe from people
and predators. Yeah, how about disclosing the location of that shed? Yeah, Charlotte
is kind of cute. Kind of. Pfffft yeah right!! 8 - Lion in the Streets
One of the most frequently used stereotypes that people from Africa have to deal with,
is the ridiculous idea that there are lions walking around the streets. South-Africa is
well-known for its wildlife, so whenever a South-African finds themselves abroad, they
often have to deal with the following: "Ah! No, way! You're from Africa?"
Because, you know…Africa has to be the same everywhere right?!
"That's crazy man. So…are there, like, lions walking in the streets and stuff?"
These questions are absurd. Of course there aren't lions walking around on the streets.
Well…until last year when one Sunday night, photos started circulating on social media
about a lion walking around the streets of Johannesburg.
The photos were all 100% real, and there really WAS s a lion walking around the streets, even
getting on top of some cars and sniffing around some dumpsters.
BUUUT, it turns out though, that the lion was trained, and was walking the streets as
part of a movie shoot. Still, the locals all made very sure to lock
their doors and stay inside till the shoot was over. H*ll, I know I would!
7 - Snakes on a plane in a wall Can you imagine what Samuel L Jackson would
have said if he ever went to go visit the Brooks family in their dream home here?
Snakeskins and droppings became commonplace in the house. As did actual black rat snakes,
which ranged from small hatchlings to full-grown seven-footers. By April, the family had evacuated
the premises and filed a $2 million lawsuit against their real estate agent.
The good news for most of us is that such snake infestations are pretty unusual. For
some reason, the snakes had settled on this house as a congregation point.
Snakes are ectothermic, which means their body temperature fluctuates with their environment.
When it gets cold, these guys find a cozy place to curl up and wait out the winter.
That could be anything from a tree stump to a rocky crevice to—well—the Brooks'
house. Even if such instances are rare, the house in Maryland isn't the first report of
a house that would make Indiana Jones squirm.
In one house in Idaho, garter snakes were crawling through cracks in the house's foundation
and using it as a place to spend the winter. It's probably likely the snakes had always
used the area as a hibernaculum, and the house was simply built on top of their hangout.
Scientists have also found wild places where snakes congregate, including the Narcisse
Snake Dens of Manitoba, Canada, where 75,000 garter snakes mate in great, writhing masses.
It's the world's largest known gathering of snakes. Snake orgy….…yeahhhhhh.
6 - Earthworm Jim! This guy was found in the gutter of a house
in south-west China and was originally mistaken for a snake due to its impressive size.
As Li Zhiwei was putting some dates out to dry in his backyard he saw the huge worm out
of the corner of his eye. After spotting it Mr Zhiwei decided to keep
the worm and raise it in his backyard…. because who doesn't like having a giant
earthworm as a pet right? It attracted locals who came to view the creature,
as they were astounded by its unusual length. Adult earthworms typically measure anywhere
between 10mm long and 1mm wide to 1m long and over 25mm wide depending on the species.
The body size of earthworms is closely related to their environment and is largely dependent
on variables such as soil texture, weather, and precipitation. They can grow longer and
wider during humid seasons as long as they have sufficient nutrition.
5 - Foxes on the Trampoline
Okay, let's take a break from all the scary things for just a minute and let's go for
cute and cuddly. Dora Nightingale's garden is often visited by playful foxes who love
nothing more than to bounce on her sun lounger, using it as a makeshift trampoline.
The 52-year-old woman, from Worthing, West Sussex, has shared footage which shows Fudge,
Faith and Freya giving any Disney movie a run for its money. Awwwww she named her foxes!
The foxes regularly visit Dora's garden, and they love her sun lounger as well!
Let's just remind Dora that foxes and badgers are often classed as vermin in the UK. But
okay, they ARE a little cute!
4 - Giant Cobra in the toilet! Okay, back to some scary sh*t! If there's
anything that could leave a person feeling really scared, it's a giant venomous snake
living in your toilet. In November 2016, Residents of an apartment
complex in Pretoria, South Africa, have been in hysterics ever since an 8-foot snouted
cobra suddenly appeared in their toilet. The commode cobra could have gotten in through
the plumbing system, but residents were obviously more concerned with getting it out.
Unfortunately for these residents, it slipped down the toilet and escaped capture…which
is not the best news for the residents. Residents are reportedly considering eradication
methods such as pouring pool acid or hot water down the pipes.
The professional snake catcher hired said that cameras have been put in the pipes to
look for it. Obviously, residents are still worried and some of them are feeling that
if it comes up, they want to kill it, which is something the snake catcher doesn't want.
Uhhhhh yeah, okay, if a cobra is slithering up my toilet, I'm for sure doing everything
I can to try and kill it! Thank goodness for the snake and everyone else, the snake has
been caught
3 - Cheetah in the yard When a nine-year-old boy from the UK ran to
his mother shouting that there was a cheetah in the garden, she dismissed his claims as
childhood excitement. But when Julie-Ann Taylor looked out the kitchen
window, she realized the surprising truth and saw a big cat attacking her son's bicycle!
The 6ft long animal was just 15 feet from her son Toby when he spotted it. He dropped
the bicycle he had been playing with and ran. Smart kid.
As he reached the house, the 66lb cheetah bit chunks out of the saddle and ripped the
tires with its claws. The cheetah had apparently escaped from a nearby zoo.
Zoo keepers and police arrived, and animal handlers put the cheetah, called Akea, in
the stables at the family's farmhouse while they harnessed it. Apparently reluctant to
return home, Akea tried to bite and scratch the handlers as they put the harness on. Uhhhhh….it's
a f*cking wild animal, duh. Hamerton Zoo, a conservation sanctuary in
Cambridgeshire, where Akea normally stays, offers 'Face to Face with a Cheetah' sessions
in more controlled circumstances, but children aren't allowed to take part because of the
risk. Akea was raised from a tiny new-born cub by
the head zoo-keeper, and according to the zookeepers, Akea is perfectly tame. Yeah,
sure. Apparently the problem was caused by a faulty electric-fencing unit.
Close call guys. Maybe check that fence a bit more regularly.
2 - Coconut Crab You ever want to see one of these around your
house? The coconut crab is the largest terrestrial
arthropod in the world. Its leg span can grow up to three feet. Think about that: if you're
a six-foot-person, that crab turned on its side would be up to your waist!!
Also known as the robber crab – because it steals random stuff such as pots and pans
all the time – the coconut crab takes around 120 years to reach its full size. Here's
what sucks: since humans have moved into its habitat, we've brought all sorts of creatures
that kill them well before they hit full size. Even though it grows really slowly, the coconut
crab still outgrows its clothes every year. The coconut crab retreats into a burrow, whips
off its shell, and eats it as soon as it starts getting a bit tight. Picture yourself sitting
in a dark closet eating your own pants. You're trying to do it as quickly as possible, because
underneath that armor, you're just a little pink sensitive munchkin.
But you're eating your pants for a pretty good reason: you're getting so freaking
big that you actually need the nutrients in your pants to survive. Since the coconut crab
grows fast enough to feel it necessary to eat its own shell, it also eats pretty much
anything else. Fruit, vegetables, anything dead…..and it even eats other crabs. There
are also reports that it likes chickens. And cats. Seriously, there are reports that kittens
have been eaten. Kittens. Yeahhhhh…….
But the staple of the coconut crab……..is the coconut. They love coconuts. Just the
fact that they love coconuts is a testament to their ridiculous pincer strength. I can't
open a coconut without assistance unless I shatter it on the ground like a pane of glass
and get coconut milk everywhere, and I have thumbs and a large brain. But these not-so-little
guys will spend however long it takes to get inside the husk using both pincer strength
and sometimes teamwork. It's a bit unfortunate though, that these
huge, ancient creatures basically aren't capable of reaching their full size. Just
simple human introduction is enough – we've basically shortened the lifespan of an entire
species. Even if it's a horrible, creepy, giant monster species, it's probably one
of the most interesting things that we're killing.

A Florida family discovered a 300-lb alligator taking a dip in their backyard swimming pool
after it ripped through their patio screen before making a splash.
Craig Lear of Lakeland said he went to let his family's cats out on the patio on Tuesday
when he saw bubbles coming to the surface of the pool.
He initially thought it was a golf ball that had come through the screen's netting and
plopped into the pool, since they live on a golf course, but it was a nine-foot-long
male alligator! Craig and Laura Lear called a trapper to remove
the giant alligator that was dipping in their backyard pool. Laura said the alligator came
in from a pond on the golf course and into their backyard, adding, 'it's mating season
so he was looking for something.' I wonder what Mrs. Lear is talking about.
I think Mrs. Lear should take her head out of the alligator gutter…
