Instagram Is Repeating Its Own Mistakes! - Duration: 4:26.

Ever heard of an app called Burbn? Nope, it has nothing to do with drinking games. It launched

in 2009 and was based around location check-ins. But when Burbn's founders realised that

people were using it mostly for sharing photos, they switched up their focus and launched

a new app. You might have heard of it…

Burbn's founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, realised that the app had been trying

to do too many things.

Instead they decided to build an app that would focus exclusively on photo-sharing,

and it's name was formed by combining the words 'Instant Photo' and 'Telegram.'

Unlike Burbn, Instagram took off almost immediately, and had more than 10,000 users in its first

few hours after going live.

"And before you knew it we had actually overloaded our system, and very small, naive

system. It was a single computer in a co-location space somewhere in LA."

"Everything was on one computer?"

"Yeah there was nothing more exhilarating than seeing people rush in, and nothing more

crushing than then seeing people posting on twitter or their blogs saying 'another startup

that doesn't know how to scale' or 'ugh, so clowny.'"

User number continued to skyrocket over the coming days and weeks as word spread about

a new photo sharing app that was suddenly the next big thing. But...why? What did Instagram

have helped it to stand apart?

Systrom and Kreiger had focused on doing one thing well, photo sharing, but there were

a few other reasons behind Instagram's insta-success

First, the company instituted a policy of open sharing. Just like Twitter, users could

follow whoever they wanted.

"You can follow someone from Japan, you know, you can follow a chef in New York city,

you can follow your favourite celebrity or you can follow your friends. That hadn't

really been done before."

Second, Instagram came out just at the time when smartphone photography was starting to

be viable, with higher megapixel counts and increasing image quality. Not only that, but

the app offered a way to beautify even the blurriest of selfies - filters.

Third, Instagram took away the pain of uploading over slow internet connections. The original

version of the app compressed every image to just 800x800 pixels and started uploading

as soon as the edits were finished on the photo, instead of when the whole post was

completed, saving precious seconds of upload time and making the entire experience feel

more seamless.

Those three factors combined made Instagram a hit, and within a week it had registered

100,000 users. In April 2012, the app was released on Android and was downloaded over

a million times in 24 hours.

Celebrities also flocked to Instagram, bringing fans to the app by their millions. Justin

Bieber was one early adopter, accumulating over 50 million followers before deleting

his account in 2016.

In early 2012, rumours began to circulate of a potential buyout, and in April of that

year, Facebook moved in, offering a billion dollars for the two-year-old startup, which

boasted just 13 employees at the time.

After the Facebook takeover, efforts to monetise the product began. Ads and boosted posts were

introduced, and after a failed attempt by Facebook to take over Snapchat, Instagram

began to implement some familiar features.

Having grown up as a darling of the photography community, Instagram's rebranding in 2016

signalled a shift in focus, with better support for brands and more emphasis on marketing

to its existing user base

Now it seems that its image as a prestige platform is hurting its engagement. Image

posts by users on Instagram fell between 2013 and 2015, while Snapchat's engagement rose significantly

during the same period.

Young people are simply more engaged with Snapchat. They are happy to post throwaway

content there, leaving Instagram fighting against the very thing that made it popular

in the first place - a focus on great photography.

Although the takeover by Facebook has undoubtedly helped propel Instagram to new heights, it's

a company that's now at odds with its itself, trying to be too many things to too many people.
