I think Japan needs to export that.
I wish I could speak more with people from abroad.
Wow, that made me a bit nervous.
It's a language problem.
It's just a language problem and the culture is different.
Hey guys, it's Cathy Cat.
What do we want Japanese people to do, or maybe to change
when the Olympics come to Japan?
Now that is actually a question we're gonna ask people at
Brilliant Star Decorations, which is an international fashion event
that this time features the World Lolita Collection,
which means loads and loads and loads of Lolita brands coming together
so there's quite a lot of interesting people there
and we wanna ask them what they think Japan should do
or change for the Olympics to be ready for you guys when you come to Japan.
Don't forget to hit the subscribe button,
so you don't miss any future videos that we do with Ask Japanese,
when we ask people in Japan about Japanese culture,
fashion and more. And, let's go and Ask Japanese.
In 2020 the Olympic Games will come to Japan.
What should Japan and Japanese people do during that time?
I think we need to be able to inform people better about what's great in Japan.
Compared to before, I can see Japan is trying to export its culture more abroad.
There is more of a cultural exchange within the last few years.
And more foreigners are coming to Japan these days.
I want more people to know about the good parts of our culture
not just Anime and Manga
There are things like our Japanese clothes, Yukata kimonos,
and ways to wear them that will look good on foreigners too.
Give foreigners a chance to get used to wearing it.
I love Lolita fashion a lot.
I think Japan has to export it's kawaii fashion and kawaii culture more abroad.
And then foreigners might find out about it.
Japan should show more of its kawaii side to the world in 2020.
Let's try our best for 2020!
The good part of Japanese culture has to first be understood by Japanese people.
Japan should check internally, what is really "Japanese" first.
And then 2020 Japan needs to tell the world what really is Japan and Japanese.
This includes subcultures like this Lolita fashion subculture.
There are many special parts to it, that you can't find abroad.
Because we are Japan, there are things we can do.
And we can introduce them from a historical angle too.
Japan doesn't have to match it for the Olympics but...
there are places abroad too, where you can enjoy Japanese culture.
There are events where you can try Japanese food or clothes.
Try out different food, wear a kimono, wear Japanese fashion like Lolita fashion
It would be great if there are events that let foreigners experience that.
As a Japanese person, I want us to show our hospitality.
Omotenashi means hospitality in Japan yes. - That's right.
We have a specific hospitality in Japan.
So I think that's what Japan needs to show during the Olympic games.
What's specific Japanese hospitality?
Dealing with others in detail and politely.
We want to make others feel good.
Let's remember our Japanese heart.
Our national trait ... is not being very open...
Japanese people can be very shy.
Yes that's why I think it would be good if we communicated more with foreigners
So Japanese should be less shy. - Yes less shy.
Let's interact more with people from different countries.
So be less reserved to others. What should Japanese do?
I think Japanese people should be more open.
I want Japan to meet and communicate more with foreigners.
I think Japanese people need to learn more English communication.
Is that going to be a problem?
Many Japanese living here can't speak any foreign languages.
I think it would be kinder to know greetings and how to explain the way.
Same opinion... but I personally am very bad at English...
Even though Japanese is such a difficult language, we can't pick up English here. That's bad.
In other countries, people can speak other languages from their mother tongue.
I think it will be bad for Japan if we don't work on our English skills until 2020.
I think people from many countries will come to Japan, and maybe get lost.
That's why I think we need to have systems in place
that can deal with people in many different languages.
So maybe some Artificial Intelligence or such to be able to deal with that.
It would be nice if there was an AI that could speak German!
Not just German but a variety of languages... that would be great.
The AI should speak French, Spainish and such.
I personally would love that. Guys, please make a cool AI like that until 2020.
Most Japanese don't have foreigner friends,
so, most Japanese cannot speak English and something,
foreign languages,
so, therefore, as a Japanese, when I see a foreigner,
"Ah, my heart is racing a little!"
It's a language problem and the culture is different,
so I'm like, "Hmm... hmm... sorry, sorry!"
some people might react shy like that.
But I think Japanese people should have more courage and fight in them.
Try to say "Hi, nice to meet you".
We should make more efforts to be friendly to foreigners.
We are very shy, but we need to overcome that.
Things will get better if we try to communicate better with foreigners.
Finally, 2020, the Olympics are in Japan, right?
What do you want Japanese people to do when
the Olympics are happening?
Just be themselves and I will appreciate it.
I will appreciate them if their English is better.
Japanese people are quite kind and quite helpful,
in all their ways. Yeah, I think that.
Maybe ask them about their own culture also,
and be interested in people coming to Japan.
Show interest!
Usually people are very surprised at why we love Japan.
Japanese people are so surprised that European people love Japan,
I don't know why, because it's a fantastic country, but...
So Japanese people should get more in touch with foreigners that come?
Yeah, absolutely; I know it's difficult because of the language barrier,
but I think for the Olympics and such, I would love to communicate more
with Japanese people here.
I think maybe more English, because I went to many shops
and they cannot contact me with English.
I believe it's a little difficult for me to travel here alone,
because I can't understand Japanese.
So you always need someone to help you translate?
Yes, yes.
Hopefully, 2020 there will be more people who are able to translate!
Actually, the Japanese, they can speak English quite well.
- Right? - Yes, but they are shy to speak,
so I think the first time, the first thing - the Japanese, they could speak English
to foreigners. And I think they will show pleasure when
they talk with them.
Okay, I think those were the questions!
- Thank you so much! - Thank you!
I'll see you next time!
So what has been mentioned quite a lot is
please speak more English. There seems to be
less people who speak English and there's always the
debate between, "Well, if you go to the other country you should speak the language
of the other country." But if it's only for the Olympics, you know, people will only
be there for a short time, so it might be a good idea to have English speakers
in place so they can communicate with everyone
who might not be able to learn the language in such a short time
for such a short time. Totally understood.
And also, what I'd love Japanese people to do is maybe
explain cultural differences. Sometimes what will happen,
Japanese people will be too kind to actually explain
why someone did something wrong, because they understand.
Which I like, but actually explaining, "You shouldn't do this in Japan
because of that," helps people to not only understand
why they did something wrong, but also to change it for the better,
so it doesn't happen again in the future. So that would be one thing I
would be really happy about, if Japanese people could do that.
So how about you, is there anything you would like Japan to change
for the Olympics? Do you think everything is fine the way it is?
Or do you actually plan to come to the Olympics?
I'd like to find that out.
Maybe some of the viewers who've been viewing us for a long time
will finally come to the Olympics and maybe we happen to bump into
each other on the streets of Tokyo. That'd be very nice.
So, I wish you a lovely day. Don't forget to hit that subscribe button if you're new
