Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel
I'm Ursula and today i'll be experimenting with you
i've started with a simple finding : by buying a lot of watercolor pads, i get a lot of cardboard
which are used to make the pad more sturdy
I don't want to throw them away because it's a good quality cardboard and i don't ant to waste it
So i was thinking using watercolor primer which are called watercolor ground
they prep any surface for receiving watercolor
It's a bit like a gesso : a white pasty texture which can be applied with a brush on the cardboard
With a soft brush you'll get a soft texture and with a hog bristle brush you'll get a heavier texture
So i applied this primer on my cardboard with a soft brush and let it dry for 24h
in order to be very dry to heart and tolerate watercolor without any problem
And then i started to paint what i feel at this moment because i hadn't any plan in my mind, as it was my first time with this primer
My goal was to discover the texture and learning how it react to watercolor
in order to use it in the way it works for me, and i surely will want to make more experimentation with !
It's not reacting exactly as paper !
So i applied a first layer of watercolor lightly
And i can already make my first note : the colors dry even lighter on it than on paper !
I have the feeling that my colors are very washed out
So i think i'll have to use more pigments on that ground
But other than that, the watercolors reacts almost the same as on paper
in some places i have puddles of water, so i have to be careful to not use too much water
But the colors bleed nicely, i have nice gradients, on this subject there's no problems !
And with the second layer i can see that i can applied other layers without reactivating the paint beneath it
Maybe it's because my first layer was so light and i can't really see it
so i'll need to check that again, but i'm quite confident it wouldn't !
In fact the only things that have disrupted me during this painting was to know if an area was wet or not
As it's not paper i can't feel the freshness of wet parts when i touch it
So it did disrupt me because i was putting more color in an area i thought dry, but it wasn't and so the colors did run and bleed
But this is about experimenting and testing what's working and what's not !
For me it's quite a success this first painting with primer and i can't wait to try it again
Maybe with other subjects and more contrasting colors... i think it could be very interesting
Anyway, i have a lot of cardboard so plenty of opportunities to test and test and test again !
Let's talk about supplies !
I've started with an Escoda Versatil nº12
And the i used a Black Velvet striper, a dagger brush
I've used Manganese blue hue, my last crush
Magenta
Quinacridone gold
Winsor blue green shade
Green gold
And my surface is a watercolor pad cardboard
which i covered with watercolor ground from Daniel Smith
By looking at the footage, i think that maybe the colors don't flow as much as on watercolor paper
The colors stay where i put them, they gradient nicely but they didn't bleed all the way
But a very nice thing to see it's the way that the manganese blue (in the top left corner) sits on top of the ground
It's a granulating color so it brings out all the small texture by deposing pigment in the hollows of the surface
a very interesting thing !
My subject is some very springy flowers which started as cherry blossoms
But i added leaves and there's no leaves when the cherry blossom !
it doesn't matter, it was just to add some more colors and test things out
But i think that this watercolor ground could be more useful for abstract watercolor
Because of the texture first but also the way that the pigment move on top of the surface
could be more suitable for abstract than realism
My last test was to see if i was able to make very fine line thanks to my dagger brush
And yes it works ! But the surface has to be very dry if not it will bleed a little bit.
to conclude this first experimentation with watercolor ground, i'me very happy with the result !
This painting isn't a masterpiece of course, but i'm happy for this discovery
I think it'll be very interesting for future painting, and it gives me a lot of ideas
And i may also try this primer as a tool to correct mistakes in paintings
For now i don't know how i'll do that but it will be tested out !
