Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 25. The verb phrase today is to spell out. So if you
spell something out or spell out something. Let's look at the note here.
The verb phrase is used to express the idea that someone needs to explain
something in a very clear or detailed way, to show there is no confusion about
it or about something. We do have a second meaning too. The second meaning is
the more literal meaning. So the second meaning of course means to
literally spell out a word, one letter at a time.
Okay, so we got two examples. One for each. Well let's look at the first one. She's
not getting it. Getting it meaning understanding it. You are going to have
to spell it out for her. Just dropping hints doesn't work. So you got to tell
her directly in a very clear way. So that she understands. So that's what we mean
you have to spell it out for her. That's what sometimes people do say. Do I have to spell
it out for you ? What's the matter ? You can't figure it out ? Sometimes people
might say it that way. Why don't we say to spell it out for someone. So you got
to say it in a very clear and very direct way. And the second , the second example
here is the literal one. Can you spell out the name of that street, so I can
make sure I am putting the correct address on the box. So if you were
filling out an address to mail a box, you might ask someone, but if it's especially if
it's a confusing name. You're a little unsure, you might want somebody to just
spell it out to make sure you're not going to make a mistake. Okay good. I hope
