In today's video, I am talking about the definitions for the phrasal verb "put down".
So, before I start really talking about the definitions, I just want to mention
that "put" is one of those verbs that doesn't change,
whether you are talking about it in the present, the past, or the...
one of the perfect tenses as the past participle.
It is: put, put, put.
Ok, the first definition: put (something) down
means to place something that you have been holding or carrying onto a flat surface.
For example: "He bent over and put the basket down on the
floor by their door."
"Please put your tablet down and come help me carry in the groceries."
"Susan put the paintbrush down and stepped back to admire her work."
The second definition: put (some money) down means to pay an amount of money as the first
payment on a loan, like a deposit.
For example: "We had to put down 20% of the house value
in order to get our mortgage."
"Well, you will have to put $10 down to place the order, and pay the rest when you come
in to pick it up."
The third definition: put (something) down means to record in writing.
For example: "Give me just a minute.
I want to put my thoughts down on paper before I forget them."
"Alright everyone!
As you fill out the form, make sure to put your name down in all capital letters."
"Oh no!
I forgot to put down my volunteer experience on my resume."
The fourth definition is put (someone) down.
It means to humiliate, or criticize, or embarrass someone publicly.
"Racist jokes are often an attempt to put down people who are different from you, just
because you feel uncomfortable about the differences."
"Although he was a good author, the critics put down his new book for being "too extreme"."
The fifth definition for put down is not splittable.
It's just "put down" always.
This means to kill an animal in a way that causes very, very little pain, because it
is too sick or injured to live any longer, or because it is dangerous.
For example: "Jessica had to have her cat put down last
week because it was very old and sick."
"My neighbors were sued because their dog had bitten three different people.
The court decided that the dog needed to be put down immediately, because it was a danger
to society."
Alright, the last definition for put down is actually an idiomatic phrase: to "put
down roots".
If you're talking about a plant, this means to get nourishment from the soil through its
roots.
But most of the time we use this when we're talking about a person,
which means that a person is establishing himself or herself in a particular place and
trying to make it feel like home.
I will give you an example of each, ok?
"I think the rosebush is finally putting down roots, so we might even see flowers this summer!"
"After we married, we decided we wanted to travel before putting down roots somewhere
near our families."
So, there you are.
