Number 15.
"Origins" Elon Musk was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South
Africa.
He lived there until the age of 17 when he moved to Kingston, Canada in order to avoid
the mandatory military service required of South African citizens.
There he attended the prestigious Queen's University before moving to the United States,
where he finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania with two
bachelor's degrees, one in Physics and one in Economics.
He became an American citizen in 2002 and his main residence is currently in Bel Air,
California.
Number 14.
"Drop-Out" After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania,
he set his sights on getting his doctorate in energy physics.
He was accepted into one of the best graduate programs for science in the United States
at Stanford University so he packed up and moved across the country to California.
His attendance didn't last long however, as after two days he grew bored with class
and decided he'd rather get right down to business and dropped out to form the company
Zip2 with his brother Kimbal.
Number 13.
"Zip2" The Musk brothers founded the company Zip2
in 1995, on the idea of creating an online version of yellowpages.
They used a $28,000 loan from their father to start and after finally finding some prominent
investors the company took off, becoming one of the main creators of business directories
and maps for the websites of newspapers throughout the country.
Only four years later, the Musk brothers had multiplied that initial $28,000 almost 11,000
times as they sold Zip2 to the computer company Compaq for $307 million.
Elon's cut of which was $22 million.
Number 12.
"PayPal" Musk used the money he made from the sale
of Zip2 to help found the website X.com which would eventually merge with the company Confinity
and become the online banking and money transfer service juggernaut PayPal.
Three years after starting X.com, PayPal was sold to eBay for a whopping $1.5 billion.
Notably, Musk wouldn't be the only former employee of PayPal that would go on to further
success, as the founders of LinkedIn, Yelp, Youtube and the current CEO of Reddit all
worked there and are part of what is now referred to as the PayPal Mafia.
Number 11.
"McCrashin F1" Back in his days at PayPal, Musk purchased
a brand new McLaren F1, which was at the time the fastest car in the world, and cost him
around one million dollars.
However, the thrills that come with owning one out of 106 of these cars that were made,
didn't last long.
Only a couple of years later, during a reckless ride with fellow billionaire Peter Thiel,
he hit an embankment and totaled the car.
The worst part?
He never insured the car, his reasoning?
"I had read all these stories about people who made money and bought sports cars and
crashed them.
But I knew it would never happen to me, so I didn't get any insurance".
Number 10.
"Club Tuition" Education can be expensive and though he is
a billionaire now, Musk was once a broke college student who spent nights worrying about how
he was gonna pay for his tuition.
Except Musk isn't the normal person, he didn't worry too long as he was born with
an entrepreneurial superbrain and quickly thought of a brilliant way to make money.
Along with his best friend, he rented a mansion and turned it into nightclub-themed party
hotspot, charging a five dollar admission.
With parties that sometimes reached upwards of 500 people, he no longer had to worry about
debt after graduation.
Number 9.
"Cheap Date" Another way that Musk helped to pay for his
education and save money for his future was by surviving on very little.
In several interviews he has said that he spent less than a dollar a day on food in
college, fueling his studies with cheap noodles that he dressed up with free condiments like
red pepper packets.
So if you are currently a college student scraping by or will be in the future, you
can add extra flavor to that Ramen with the thought that even some of the most successful
businessmen have had to pay for food with pocket change
Number 8.
"Triple & Double" Though he is only 46, Musk has already had
a whirlwind personal life having been married three times.
In his defense, two of the marriages were to the same person, Talulah Riley, though
they both ended in divorce.
His first marriage, to Justine Wilson, produced all five of his children.
His five children are all boys and in what sounds like a bit of barroom trivia, were
all born within a three year span.
In fact, the five Musk boys were the result of only two pregnancies, as in 2004 Justine
had twins and followed that up with triplets in 2006.
The bountiful pregnancies were products of in vitro fertilization which does significantly
increase the odds for multiple births.
The boys are named Saxon, Griffin, Damian, Kai and Xavier who he admitted was named after
Professor X from the X-Men comic books.
The boon of offspring couldn't have come to more deserving parents as their first son,
Nevada, did not live past infancy.
Number 7.
"Wiz Kid" Even before reaching puberty Musk had come
into his own as wizard with technology.
He coded his first video game at the age of twelve and of course it space-themed.
The game was called Blastar and he actually sold the code to a magazine called PC and
Office Technology for $500.
The game itself is very simple, you are a spaceship that tries to fight off alien ships
with a laser gun.
It doesn't look like much, but it is an impressive feat when you consider it was made
in the early 80s and Musk was only twelve years old.
Thanks to Tomas Lloret, a software engineer for Google, you can now find a playable version
of Blastar online.
Number 6.
"Awards and Honors" Over his career which continues to skyrocket
towards legendary innovator status Musk has picked up several prestigious awards.
In 2010, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale also known as The World Air Sports Federation
bestowed on him the Gold Space Medal which is one of their highest honors.
In 2013, Fortune Magazine named him businessperson of the year.
Though there are many other awards he has won, one of the most esteemed list he has
made was when Esquire put him at number 39 on their list of the 75 most influential people
of the 21st century, which with his current endeavors we can't see him leaving in the
foreseeable future.
Number 5.
"Money-Man Musk" Elon Musk is one of the richest people in
the world but where exactly does he rank among the world's wealthiest?
Well with his current net worth of just over 20 billion dollars he currently holds the
position of the 58th richest person in the world.
What is more astonishing is his place as the 7th richest person on Earth under the age
of 50.
With his brilliant knack for being ahead of the curve on technology and his tone-setting
dealings in the field of space travel it isn't hard to see him eventually overtaking Gates
and the closer-in-age Zuckerberg in the near future.
Speaking of Gates and Zuckerberg, Musk has recently joined them in the Giving Pledge
movement, which is a willful promise some of the world's wealthiest have made to donate
the majority of their wealth to charity over the years.
Number 4.
"Gigafactory" One of the projects that Elon Musk holds most
dear to his heart is that of the Gigafactory.
In what Musk claims will be the biggest building in the world, the gigafactory, (currently
being built in the desert of Nevada) he hopes to become the leading manufacturer of rechargeable
eco-friendly lithium-ion batteries and run whole shebang on wind and solar power.
He not only has broken ground on this site but has at least four other gigafactories
in the works in Europe and North America.
Nevada has already felt a significant impact in its economy from the factory (which although
it was technically opened in 2016, isn't anticipated to be fully completed until 2020)
and several experts have predicted that the state could earn billions on a yearly basis
by merely hosting it.
Number 3.
"The Musk Who Loved Me" If you have ever seen the 1977 James Bond
Film 'A Spy Who Love Me' you will recognize this car.
It's a Lotus Esprit S1 also known as 'Wet Nellie' and you might remember it having
the cool feature of being able to turn into a submarine.
As you can probably guess the car couldn't really transform in real-life.
Well, that didn't bother Musk as he was such a big fan of the movie--especially this
gadget-laden car-- that he decided to buy it.
He bought at an auction in 2013 for close to one million dollars and if you have learned
anything about Elon Musk you probably realize that he wouldn't be content just keeping
this beauty in the garage.
No, not only does he drive it but he has been busy modifying and customizing it so that
it can actually convert into a submarine and of course, make it completely electric with
a suped-up Tesla electric powertrain.
Number 2.
"Real Life Tony Stark" If you have seen any of the live action Iron
Man movies you will know that the main character of Tony Stark is a suave yet brash billionaire
genius who almost has no filter between his brain and hist mouth.
Robert Downey Jr. plays the role excellently with controlled bravado and just a hint of
quirkiness.
What does this have to do with Elon Musk?
Well if you know anything about Musk's personality the traits we just listed might sound familiar.
This is more than just a coincidence as Downey actually based of much his portrayal of Tony
Stark off the mannerisms and attitude of Musk.
A big comic book fan himself, Musk was flattered by this and even appeared in a cameo role
in Iron Man 2.
Number 1.
"Dragon" Musk has recently made significant strides
with his company SpaceX and the successfully test launch Falcon Heavy, the most powerful
working rocket in the world.
But before that, Musk and SpaceX had already changed the game when it comes to space travel.
One could even say that he helped bring it into the 21st Century.
With their revolutionary Dragon spacecraft that is completely reusable they helped reduce
the cost of transporting cargo to the International Space Station from $1 billion dollars to $60
million, a cost reduction of over 90 percent.
Dragon also has the distinction of being the first commercial spacecraft to ever dock at
the International Space Station and the first commercially operated spacecraft to be recovered
after achieving orbit.
Since its first supply trip in 2012, Dragon has successfully completed eleven out of twelve
missions as part of the Commercial Resupply Service Contract SpaceX has with NASA.

When you're meeting these people these recruiters let's say you
know you have the top three companies you want to meet that night when you go
up to these people make sure you look them in the eye give them a firm
handshake not not this that's no good not not this I've actually I've actually
seen that I'm like what is that becau
now I'm talking about a firm handshake not a bone-crushing handshake but just
firm and look them in the eye and say hi my name is Mike it is a pleasure to meet
you and just exude confidence not arrogant confidence I'm not talking
about a know-it-all confidence but you know fake it till you make it guys I
know it's awkward it's weird at these things I remember having the fake it you
just have to fake that confidence if need be but you know practice it in the
mirror the night before practice what you're gonna say and just go up to them
give them a firm handshake and introduce yourself avoid negative conversations at
all cost I actually had one guy tell me he had
just got out of prison
and I'm like why did you you know why do you want to tell me that it's like just
avoid negative conversations if you can you are there to meet them to express
your value to them why they might want to get to know you more why they might
might want to hire you as an intern or look at you as a potential future
candidate for their organization so you want to give you off the best image and
vibe you can and you do that by exuding confidence being prepared being well
dressed giving them a firm handshake it says a lot it says more than you think
it does to recruiters and just knowing having some knowledge regarding their
organization because you've taken time back on one of our earlier tips to look
up what their company is about and you're ready to ask them questions now
about their company so let's talk about that right now
all right okay so let's talk about some questions you might ask them and so let
me just go over a few of a few examples here so you might ask them hey what part
about your job or company do you enjoy the most you get a feel from them what
what they like about doubl renovation and see if that sounds like something
you would like as well you know how long have you been working for the company
and what made you choose this organization when you were first looking
for a job what is the typical work they like for you can you walk me through it
you can say the next question you can ask them is what is something about your
organization that most people wouldn't know when someone starts working for
your organization what are some of their first responsibilities or tasks what are
some career paths available for your organization if somebody were to start
off as an intern what aspect of your job do you find most challenging and what
aspect of your job do you enjoy the most so those are some questions I mean
obviously don't have to use these guys but those are some examples of questions
you can ask the recruiters to spark a conversation and to show how much how
you're interested in working for the organization they love questions like
that now there's a lot you might have heard that networking has a lot of
similarities to dating right obviously there's differences but
there's there are a lot of similarities of dating and networking so it's really
awkward and what here's a mistake I see people make is when you're gonna go meet
somebody you're walking up to that table or their booth where they're stationed
at at that Career Fair one of the worst things you can do is
write it you know I've see people do this all the time they do it literally
all the time it's it's frustrating but they'll walk right up to you and they'll
say hi I'm so-and-so do you have internships and it's like whoa let's
it's just like it's too forward and it's kind of like if you imagine if you had a
let's say a girl you liked or somebody who wanted to go a scout so imagine you
don't know them at all so you and you walk up to a complete stranger and say
hey my name is my name is Mike want to go out you're gonna freak him out so
that wouldn't work in a dating environment so it does that working in
the networking environment promise me that you won't just immediately go to
the first person you see and ask them hey have an internship no ask him these
other questions first get to know what their company's like ask them questions
about the organization get to see what they're like you know get to know them
before asking that question and when you're leaving when you're ending that
conversation at that point when you're about to walk away from them their table
and say hey it was really nice meeting you and I would I would love to stay in
touch with you I want you to ask them if you have a business card get their
business card from them and you can also ask hey you do you have any internships
available right now do you have some openings you foursie's some openings
coming up at your company so asking questions like that but at the end of
the conversation I'm gonna go back to the business card thing in just a second
now let me flip things around a little bit so we though we just went over some
questions that you can ask them but be prepared for them the recruiters of the
companies to ask you questions as well so here are some questions that they
might ask you while that you're while you're at the event so be prepared so
let me read off a couple to you right now
how did you hear about our company what made you interested in accounting or
finance what's your favorite accounting class and why so tell me what hobbies
you have or enjoy outside of work in school tell me about your work
experience or your background in accounting do you do you have experience
at this point or what are you doing to gain experience when are you expecting
to graduate and what are some of your plans after graduation so those are some
examples of questions the employers might ask you while you're at that event
so be prepared as so I just want to give you guys some
examples of some common questions I hear at these kind of events okay guys let's
go back and revisit that tip I just gave you about asking for their business card
before you leave the conversation you're not just I'm not asking you need to get
their business card just so you can like keep it in your pocket or like or have a
collection of you know company's business cards whoo
I mean that's not gonna do anything for you the purpose the reason I'm asking
you to ask them for their business card is so that you can go back the next day
and usually their business cards will have their email on it and I would like
you if you're interested in learning more about their organization or working
for them I would encourage you to take the email on their business card the
very next day or that week not long after that career fair that you just
attended and email them follow up with them say hey so I would say something
like hey it's Mike it was so nice to meet you the other night at
such-and-such college recruiting events I had a great time learning more about
you and your organization and then you can go on in and say hey I don't know if
I didn't get a chance to give you my resume or you know maybe it I already
gave them them my resume so I might say oh here here's another copy of my resume
just in case you need it here's some cover letters here's some letters of
references I have that speak for my you know my work ethic so please feel free
to check it out and let me please keep in I'll keep in touch
doing this shows how professional you actually are and how thoughtful you are
because you've just given them your resume again you've given them your cut
maybe you giving them your cover letter and references things like that maybe
things you couldn't give them the first night but it gives you another
opportunity to speak about why you might be able to be a good fit and help their
organization it'll gives you another chance to promote yourself and that is
the purpose of the business card my friends and plus you'll start to get to
know some of the people of their organization so following up with them
and thanking them for their time that night looks very professional and so
when they do have openings and you can ask hey if there's if they don't have if
they don't have any openings right now you can ask them in that email say hey
here's my you know here's my resume etc if let me know I would be I be
interested in working organization please think of me or
consider me when you have internship opportunities available or new positions
open up and you can follow up with them every six months and I'd use that
approach to land my job that's one of the approaches I took just to keep in
touch with their one of their recruiters and it makes a huge difference and like
I said it makes you look very professional very thoughtful very
prepared I guess remember also with the business
card is you can go on LinkedIn and connect with them there so there's many
different ways you can use this business card just you know besides email now I'm
gonna leave social networking social media out of this video but that's just
something I really wanted to mention just real quick I can save you know I
can give you some suggestions on how to promote yourself professionally and
unlike LinkedIn to those other sites in another video if you'd like me to you
okay ladies and gentlemen those are all the networking tips I have for you today

He's principal researcher at Microsoft Research New England,
and an adjunct associate professor
in the department of communication at Cornell University.
Today, Gillespie and I will continue what has
become a frequent topic of conversation on
The Open Mind, the ever-perilous anti-social media
complex and its learning curve or downright recklessness
in failing to address abuse that has enflamed not only
its platforms but society, Tarleton,
in what I would say is a fatal or potentially
fatal conflagration. Welcome.
GILLESPIE: Thank you, thank you for the invitation.
HEFFNER: Thanks for being here.
In your book, February 2015,
CEO, then-CEO Dick Costolo,
"We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the
platform and we've sucked at it for years.
It's no secret, and the rest of the world talks
about it every day.
We're going to start kicking these people off
right and left and making sure that when they issue
their ridiculous attacks, nobody hears them."
February 2015.
Spring, 2018, present day.
GILLESPIE: Right.
HEFFNER: The problem has only exploded
and Dick Costolo not so long after that statement
was ousted from leadership of Twitter.
Can you give us hope?
GILLESPIE: Maybe. Maybe.
I think it's a, that quote's a really good
reminder that as we have these discussions now,
whether it's about fake news,
propaganda, trolling, terrorism,
and it feels like the last year has sort of popped
open this question, this question's
been around for a while.
And as Costolo notes, they've been dealing
with it for a while.
Now, whether you think they were dealing
with it well or not for a long time,
I think it's important to remember as we go through
these series of controversies,
whether it's the contemporary one right now
about fake news, whether it's the harassment
that he was talking about in 2015,
whether it was images of breast-feeding,
whether it was self-harm, we've had ten years
of trying to imagine what it looks like to have a
social media platform that in principle lives
on this idea of having an open space for user
participation, and yet also has to grapple with
this question of what belongs there and what doesn't.
These are immensely difficult questions.
The fact that it's exploded into public
consciousness is a good thing, so maybe that's the hope.
HEFFNER: That's a hope.
When we had Biz Stone, one of the founders of Twitter,
and I think I've relayed this story
to our viewers before, I asked him,
do you ever foresee a need to impose a civic
consciousness on your users?
And he said to me what do you mean?
Which is come to think of it kind of typical Silicon
Valley lack of social or moral compass.
At the time I was not so definitive in thinking
that was the reality.
I said, to be a good Samaritan. And he said no.
I don't think you can force that on people.
You have to make it feel like they're winning.
And I thought to myself that's exactly why Twitter
was the natural host of Donald Trump and his ad
hominem and invective and all of that.
Because there was no social compass or
consciousness that was leadership from the top,
but that story to me is recognizing Twitter's
failure to adopt a system and broadly,
social media's failure to adopt a system that gives
goodness, decency, currency.
GILLESPIE: It's a great way to ask the question,
do they have a civic consciousness,
and I would flip the question around and say
they did offer civic consciousness,
it just wasn't the one you were looking for.
So, some of the social media platforms,
including Twitter, were very proud of this idea
that they were, what was the quote,
the free speech wing of the free speech party.
That is a civic consciousness,
but it's a civic consciousness that
believed in a certain notion that came out
of the early ideas of the web that if you make a space
and you don't guide what people say,
that's gonna produce either a kind
of cornucopia, right, everything could be said
or a very old idea about the marketplace of ideas, right?
We can debate, we can say the good things
and the bad things and somehow the good things will win out.
That was the idea that animated some of those
principles, right? Early ideas about virtual community,
early ideas about the web.
The problem was it didn't foresee that as they built
what they presented as an open space,
an open space to talk, an open space to share,
an open space to connect, that they were building a
tool that was making it possible for us to
tactically persuade each other.
Sometimes that's a great thing, right?
I want to tell you something that matters to me.
Sometimes as we can see it's a really problematic thing.
So now we have to have a different civic
consciousness, but there always was one,
and the pretense was that somehow there wasn't one.
That there was no guidance, it was free and open.
I think that was always a misrepresentation.
HEFFNER: The operating philosophy from the outset
was sunlight is the best disinfectant.
Do they recognize now that when there is
just an onslaught of fake information,
misleading information, misinformation,
disinformation that you can't really handicap
that if, if 90 percent of what is disseminated
is malevolent, how can that compete with 10 percent?
GILLESPIE: I think that's a great question
and I think that one of the things that's really
difficult is that it's not quite a 90-10, right?
We spent a lot of time on Facebook and Twitter
and Instagram sharing perfectly legitimate content.
So it becomes this really interesting challenge
about, and it's always been true,
how do you create a platform that is going
to be hands-off in the sense of it's not guiding what
you should say, but is somehow recognizing these
kind of these kind of currents inside that can
be taken advantage of. I think these early platforms,
when they did approach content moderation,
and all of them were doing it from the beginning,
the nature of the problem was of, only of a certain size.
So if you imagine that you were gonna have a
discussion space, and you knew that somebody
was gonna try to turn it into a porn site,
and your job was to get rid of the porn,
and it was a clear violation of the rules,
right, that was just a question of spotting it,
it's kind of a whack-a-mole problem.
Now we've got a much different problem which
says we're not worried about actors who know
perfectly well that they're violating the
rules and they're just trying to like, you know, be vandals.
What we're dealing with now is people trying to
take advantage of the way the system works,
insert information or participation that looks
legitimate, this is the fake news headline,
this is the, it seems like it's a political opinion
from a genuine actor when in fact it's a bot,
and it's exactly the stuff that these systems
are designed to circulate, right?
They're designed to take interesting,
unexpected contributions and get them out there,
make them go viral, get engagement,
and so the very same things that should
circulate, like a thoughtful political idea,
the thing that looks just like it but is nefarious
or propagandistic slips right in the system.
That's a much harder thing to discern.
The other problem is when it's a case of harassment
or offense, there's a victim, right?
I was offended, I was attacked.
And the platform can act on their behalf.
We now have a problem where I may never see
a fake news headline.
I may never forward a fake news headline.
I may never participate in it.
But the fact that that fake news is circulating harms me.
That's a public harm, right?
So now whether or not I had any role in it,
whether or not I received that information or had
any role in circulating it,
there's still a harm to me because it's harming
the democratic process, it's harming the public discussion.
Public harms are very difficult to deal with.
They require governance.
HEFFNER: Well, that's why the title of your book
is brilliant, tragically, because they are
custodians and not guardians.
They're not guardians of the internet.
We need guardians of the internet.
GILLESPIE: Right.
I, I like the word because I think that
there was a very early interview I had with someone
working at YouTube and they said we wish we could just sweep
up and turn the lights off.
So a custodian in the sense of like,
there's just a management process that needs to happen.
There's another definition of custodian like a legal custodian.
It's someone,
HEFFNER: And a reputation associated
with being a custodian.
GILLESPIE: That's right.
And it's someone's job, not,
I don't mean legal custodian like of a child
but a custodian that says we have to manage a space
where difficult issues can be contested.
HEFFNER: Right.
GILLESPIE: There has to be a process where we grapple
with those kind of competing values that kind
of custodianship might be very different
than we sweep up the mess,
HEFFNER: Right.
GILLESPIE: Which is, we've talked about moderation
up, up till about a year ago,
HEFFNER: Right.
GILLESPIE: Up until 20...
HEFFNER: Well and you were saying to me
that there is systemically something wrong with the current
philosophy or hardware within the consciousness of the moderators today.
Let's focus on solutions.
You point out that there are innocuous things
that were flagged in the infancy of Facebook
and Twitter, a Facebook user's photo of her
breastfeeding, for instance.
We still see pretty chronically that they will
flag things that are innocuous and not flag
things that are so obviously a source of
harassment or disinformation,
and it, there's, that's still the problem.
GILLESPIE: Right.
And, and we approach this, every time we get worked
up, and I don't mean, I don't mean that dismissively.
Every time we get focused on a problem that we see
on some of these platforms,
in some ways the nature of that problem drives
how we talk about it.
So right now it's why didn't you do anything
about Russia manipulation, fake news, terrorist content?
You didn't do enough.
There are other points in our discussion
where the worry has been you've done too much, right?
You've been too conservative;
you've taken things off, or a kind of inconsistency.
So somehow we have to address this where we
don't just solve problem A with the shape of problem A.
We have to think about moderation as a whole
project, and platforms, you know,
I have to acknowledge, I acknowledge in the book
this is a very hard thing to do,
and it's a problem that we faced with newspapers
and television, this, the, the nature of the problem
is different but the question about whether
it's the commercial intermediary's job to decide what should
and shouldn't be there, and if it is,
how did they do it, and if it isn't,
you know, who does it instead? Those questions persist.
We have to think about moderation in a way
that's gonna recognize that they're gonna both
have to identify the worst of the worst. That's one job.
The second is they're gonna draw these
distinctions between something that you might
think is troubling, I might think is not
troubling, someone else thinks is great,
and they're gonna be mediating that,
and then this third category which
I think has gotten very hard which is the stuff
that looks exactly like the thing they most want to circulate.
I think that's the hardest one for them 'cause it
fits into their business model,
right, a viral story, an exciting news bit,
an enthusiastic voice.
HEFFNER: Problematically,
GILLESPIE: Yeah.
HEFFNER: Being anonymous. Anonymity.
Is their business model.
The way that they sold ads to people they,
we couldn't identify later associated with
intelligence operations, information warfare.
So the, the commercial impetus is for them to
sell ads irrespective of geographic origin,
irrespective of entity buying the ads,
and no one seems to be challenging within the
shareholding community of these companies
and the larger ecosystem that there is something wrong
with the hardware.
GILLESPIE: Right. I, I think that's probably where,
I mean we can talk about more moderators and more
sensitive moderators and consulting,
there are things that they could do,
and many of the platforms are moving in that direction.
But I think the structural problem is more pressing
than the one you identify.
One of the things that's fascinating to me is
that if you think about platforms as kind of
starting with the ideal of the web and trying to be
something better, right, all of that,
the best of participation, the best of content,
we're gonna pull it all together and make it
somewhere where it's easy, easy to find, and exciting.
They've spent ten years innovating in really
powerful ways how to do that,
how to get things in front of you,
how to get, connect you to your friends.
There was another aspect of what the web promised,
and that was not just transparency but kind of
radical data transparency.
I can know the system, I can understand the
participation, I can build structures
such that I manage that.
And they haven't done much on that side.
I think it would be incredible to imagine
platforms saying okay, we're gonna have advertising.
That's an important part of our business.
But we know an immense amount about those advertisers.
Where did they put that information?
Who were they targeting? That could belong to users.
I should be able to hover over an ad and find out
exactly where they sent it, right?
And I don't just mean political ads, I mean all of them.
Similarly, they rely on us to flag content,
right, that's most of how platforms find out where
the violations are that's all this data
we're providing for them but that data never comes back to us.
That could be made transparent.
Not just yes, we'll report on a yearly basis
that we took down X numbers, but a radical commitment to that.
We have data, we the platforms have data.
That data belongs to us.
We could have a new level of transparency about who
advertises, who sends ads in what direction,
who were they trying to target and make that all visible.
That would still allow an advertising-based system,
it would still allow all the sort of network
effects the platforms benefit from,
but it would take an early commitment of the web
that has somehow been dropped.
HEFFNER: Abandoned.
GILLESPIE: Yeah.
HEFFNER: Well it's interesting you mention that.
I was gonna say we went from web 2.0,
really in terms of our sophistication,
moral character, and withdrew to web 1.0,
GILLESPIE: Hmm.
HEFFNER: And you've been working on this
for a while so I wonder how you consider the fact
that Facebook and Twitter gave a platform not only
to bombastic rhetoric but to extremists.
In the earlier incarnation of the web,
there were designated safe spaces for extremists,
but Netscape and Internet Explorer to give props
to your New England Microsoft,
were not in any way promoting their agendas.
So you took an earlier web that was actually
much more transparent and you gave an open megaphone
that was then monetized to extremists,
and to intelligence services.
Why can't we go back to that 1990s web? We need to.
GILLESPIE: I mean going back is very hard.
But I would point out that if we had,
if somehow platforms had never developed,
and the idea of the web, you put the information
on the web and you have a space for it and search
engines help people find it and browsers display it
for you, if somehow we were still living with
just the more sophisticated version
of that, if the idea of a platform that coalesced
that information never developed,
we'd still be having a debate about,
you know, how ISIS is recruiting or how,
you know, hate speech is gathering and it would be
hap, it would be a question about the web, right?
What about these dark pockets of activity?
Sure, you know, it's harder to get to it,
it's not showing up in your feed.
We would have a different debate because
the structure would be different.
So every time we develop a medium and a medium starts
to take on public importance the way
the web did, the way social media did,
these questions, fundamental questions
about kind of public responsibility,
harm versus benefit, openness versus oversight,
these questions never go away.
One issue is that we have to understand it,
understand really how it works,
not the way newspapers worked or broadcasting
worked but this says something special about
how this is organized.
And then ask the question about who has taken up
positions of power to shape that solution, right?
And it was one thing when it was sort of like
websites that there were a million of 'em.
Now we do have a small number of organizations
that are making immensely important decisions,
and that does change the game.
HEFFNER: Ultimately, you know,
it's about these private companies supporting
productive as opposed to counter-productive speech.
Where, practically speaking,
GILLESPIE: Yeah.
HEFFNER: Can you make inroads?
GILLESPIE: I think when you look historically
at the early days of previous media,
these questions take a long time.
And I'm sure at the time they felt really potent,
they felt like problems unanswered.
Part of the process of grappling with these
really tricky questions, how do I allow vibrant
speech and also protect someone from terrorist recruiting?
And when we've envisioned a system that said
we've just put a priority on anyone can contribute,
which is very different than how do you get on
television, how do you get in the newspapers, right?
So we made this radical commitment to nearly
everyone can speak, it's very easy,
the barriers are very low, and in fact
there are these platforms that help stuff circulate.
We then have to ask the question again.
We have to ask the question that says where
are we gonna imagine the balance?
What are we willing to accept,
which might be we're faced with,
you know, offensive speech, or we're not.
It might be that there are environments
in which you can find it, and environments
where you shouldn't have to.
It may be tools where every user can kind of you
know, make their little filters and say what they
want to see and not see.
But I think what we're seeing in the last year
or couple is that the offer the platforms made,
which was we'll be hands off,
this stuff will come to you,
and by the way we'll moderate but we won't
like, worry you about that, has proven unacceptable.
There's now a kind of implicit contract
from the users and from the public that's very different
than the terms of service that they offered.
We're asking them to step in and play a, a stronger role.
The thing I don't want to be left with is that they
should just take on that role but do it behind the scenes.
I think that's still a mistake, right?
HEFFNER: Right, yeah.
GILLESPIE: I think we're grappling with the hardest
questions, so it can't be done on our behalf.
HEFFNER: Right, and it, that is the way
it's being done right now, unfortunately.
And I can't help but recognize the historical
context which is that Vladimir Putin,
who our intelligence service has conclusively
said was responsible for an operation to sow
discord among Americans in their internet
consumption, was on television recently
blaming Jews, Russian Jews for the disinformation.
To be a prominent American Jew and to not respond
to Putin's statement given the culpability
that has been identified here, it's mind-boggling to me.
There is no innocence here,
on the part of Putin certainly, or on the part of Zuckerberg.
Own up to that. I'm sorry.
For those of us who've grown up with digital
technology as an analog to our daily lives,
I couldn't be more passionate about this subject, so.
GILLESPIE: Right, right.
HEFFNER: Forgive me.
GILLESPIE: No I, I mean I think that the,
the right question is the question of responsibility.
And that responsibility, sometimes it's a question
about the platform itself, the CEO down,
sometimes it's a question of responsibility
of manipulative actors who are taking advantage
of that information environment.
Sometimes it's a responsibility of all
of us to recognize the system we've committed to.
My focus has been on the platforms in part
because I think that I do think that the intentions
have been good, but the, the recognition
of the system that they've built
and what it facilitates has been slow in coming.
HEFFNER: Right, and if, in the minutes we have remaining,
GILLESPIE: Yeah.
HEFFNER: We've focused in large measure on Twitter,
then we got to Facebook.
Let's end with YouTube and Reddit specifically,
which is one of the natural breeding grounds
of conspiracy theories and some genuine information
sharing and gathering, but Zeynep argues
that the way that YouTube is designed,
and I want you to tell us about Reddit too,
but the way that YouTube is designed
is that if you watch something that is legitimate,
you're gonna be fed illegitimate,
even if what you're watching is something that is legitimate.
GILLESPIE: Right, right.
The, the thing that we, when I make these points
about this being a long issue,
we've always grappled with the kind of responsibility
for moderation question.
Every time we have a, a new medium that works a
different way, and I mean like technically works
a different way, economically works a
different way, it's kind of structured a different
way, then the way the problem comes up is different.
So the thing that Zeynep is pointing to
I think absolutely correctly is that many
of these platforms have designed algorithms
that are eager to serve you up the next thing to watch,
the next post to read, the next photo to look at.
That is a fundamental part of their offer.
And in a way when we say content moderation,
we should mean not just deleting posts
and kicking people off but also this kind of algorithmic
selection process, which does moderate for me.
I may never see your post, it was there,
but if I didn't see it, that was a subtle selection process.
If those tools are built to privilege engagement,
and that's in some ways a code word, right?
From the business side, are you on there,
are you clicking, are you spending more time than ever?
That's interesting for advertisers and data collection.
But we now recognize the kind of things
that are engaging, right?
Genuine news, important discussion,
hilarious jokes, funny videos,
but also clickbait, right, conspiracy theories,
slight exaggeration, so I go to watch a video
and it's on a, it's a legitimate piece of news,
and it says based on the thing you were looking at,
what might be the next thing you watch?
What's been exciting? What has been popular?
What's been watched a bunch of times?
Those signals of popularity are picking up both things.
They're picking up something that people
found genuinely interesting and
informative, and it's picking up stuff that
kind of tickled that fancy.
And if it, if it's powered on engagement produces
recommendations, then we're seeing the,
the kind of strange kind of side effects of that...
HEFFNER: And Reddit, quickly.
GILLESPIE: Reddit, I mean so each of these platforms
has a slight different solution.
Reddit handed a lot of moderation to the people
who administer each group, and for some of those
groups it's been very effective.
Those groups can set their own rules,
they can set stricter rules than Reddit.
The problem is that Reddit also has a popularity algorithm.
So you're in some discussion,
you've got a nice set of community norms,
everyone kind of agrees on what should be there
and what shouldn't, one of those posts hits the front
page and a hundred new people show up
and they're not part of that community,
they're not, they haven't agreed upon that entrance,
so that algorithm is feeding,
instead of feeding strange material after a good one,
it's feeding people into communities that haven't
embraced the norms.
So the algorithm can cause a problem in both directions.
And Reddit for a long time got to sort of wipe
its hands and say well the moderators are gonna
handle it, which is great except a group
that says we're fine distributing celebrity nudes
and we're all okay with it, Reddit then had to say oh,
we actually have, have to not tolerate that.
That was a hard transition for them.
HEFFNER: Tarleton, I, thank you for your time.

and guardians, custodians of the internet

Do you know what's under the sea?
Do you know what's really under the sea? And did you know there are creatures of the
water that are massive?
Join us as we reveal 10 of the biggest underwater creatures that you probably don't know exist.
10.
Japanese Spider Crab For starters, let's think about some sea creatures
you'd see on or near a beach.
What's the first thing you see?
For me, it's a crab.
They're always wandering around, and if you're not careful, you can step on one, and you'll
regret it...trust me on that.
Now, the crab you're likely picturing is small, or if you've seen shows like Deadliest Catch
you'll know that crab can be large depending on their species.
However, none of them have anything on the Japanese Spider Crab.
Not only is this thing massive, it's terrifying to think that this thing actually exists.
And it does, it really does.
This thing from leg to leg is 12 feet long, that's way bigger than any other crab out
there.
What's more, it's actually the largest arthropod in the world, that's pretty impressive.
But still terrifying.
Thank goodness we don't have to see them very often because they often live underwater.

Giant Clams When you hear those words, "Giant Clams",
you likely think about a movie you've seen, or a TV show that exaggerated the massive
size of these clams.
I'm curious though, which one was it for you?
Regardless though, Giant Clams are very real, and they can get very big. in fact, the largest
recorded one is 4 feet six inches wide.
What's more impressive than that though is the fact that the clam is apparently 500+
pounds!
That's heavy.
What's more, they can be found in deep waters as well as shallow surfaces.
Oh, and if you're one of those people who fear getting caught in a giant clam...you're
right to fear that.
For the sheer weight of the clams' body coming down on you will likely make it so you can't
get out without a serious fight.
Yes, they don't grow to the size of regular human adults, but 4 feet is nothing to mock.
Sadly, many species of Giant Clam are endangered, let's hope that stops soon.
8.
Portuguese Man-Of-War The sea is truly full of wonders, and because
of that, we're still trying to learn all the secrets that it holds.
Take, for example, the Portuguese Man-Of-War.
When you look at it, what species of animal do you think it is?
A jellyfish?
A good guess, but that's actually incorrect.
In fact, the Portuguese Man-Of-War is a collection of organisms that work together to move and
act.
It's an incredible feat when you think about it.
As this is a creature that literally has to work together with thousands of others in
order to survive.
On their own, every single one of the organisms would die.
The Man-Of-War has another name that should get your attention, "Floating Terror", that's
because this is a venomous creature, and getting stung by it can be not only painful, but fatal
in the right amount.
Over 10,000 people a year in Australia are stung by the Man-Of-War.
What's more, the Man-Of-War is a carnivore, and uses its army of organisms to ensure prey
and devour them slowly.
Now, why does this fascinating creature make our list?
Well, like a jellyfish, the Man-O-War has tentacles, and they largest recorded ones
have gone 135 feet long.
Which is wrong on so many levels.
To be fair, that's the extreme number, the average is around 30 feet long, but that's
still a lot of reach for a venomous creature.
7.
Ocean Sunfish Sticking with the "oddities" portion of the
ocean, let's talk about the Ocean Sunfish.
This creature is affectionately known as the "Swimming Head".
Can you guess why?
That's right, it's because it doesn't have a tail.
If you look closely at it, you'll see that it's literal all rigid, save for its mouth
of course.
This massive "head" can grow as big as 10 feet long, and tall.
Its fins, which are actually how it swims, can be extended in such a way that it'll make
the creature the same height both length and width wise.
Another thing that makes the Ocean Sunfish interesting is both what it eats, and what
eats it.
The Sunfish actually feeds on small jellyfish of all things.
But they also can eat various fish, and even squids!
As for the predators that feast on the Ocean Sunfish, it's very limited due to its size.
To that end, animals like sharks, orca, and even sea lions are its most vicious predators.
This fish is something else, and that's probably why you didn't know about it.
6.
Giant Squid "Here there be monsters."
Whether on the land, in the air, or in the ocean, there are tales of massive creatures
that roam the waters and have caused havoc for humans that have gotten in their way.
The Giant Squid is most certainly one of them.
In fact, many feel that the Giant Squid is the basis for the legend of the Kraken, which
is understandable given how massive these creatures are.
We're talking 40 feet from the tip of the head to the end of its tentacles, that makes
it the largest Cephalopod in the world.
That's not the only thing of note though.
Because of the fact that they reside mostly in the deepest and darkest waters of the oceans,
scientists honestly haven't had the time or ability to study them further.
Which could mean that there are even bigger versions of the Giant Squid out there, including
the possibility of the Kraken itself truly existing.
...know what?
I'm getting freaked just thinking about it, so let's move on.
5.
Basking Shark Sharks are famous, and notorious for being
some of the most vicious and aggressive creatures within the ocean.
So it might just surprise you to learn that the Basking Shark is not only the second-largest
fish within the ocean itself, but it's also one of most gentle sharks in the water.
That sounds like an oxymoron, doesn't it?
A massive shark that is gentle.
But it's true, very true, in fact.
Despite the Basking Shark growing up to 40 feet long (which is the current record for
the species), the shark only eats plankton, fish eggs, and larvae.
That just boggles the mind.
What's more, the look of the creature is very unique.
Its mouth is massive, which you would expect from a creature this size, but it's likely
that this mouth allows it to get the food it needs from a wide area.
Other things it doesn't share with its shark brethren is the fact that they're actually
really slow.
To the extent that they don't try and evade things coming towards them, including boats.
However, this has proven to be a bad thing, for their slow speed and gentle nature have
led to them being hunted in great numbers.
Which has led to their population numbers plummeting in some cases.
4.
Whale Shark So, if the Basking Shark is the second-largest
fish in the sea, what's the first?
Well, that would be the Whale Shark, another creature that sounds like an oxymoron, yet
this time works out when you think about it.
After all, whales are massive, and this one definitely qualifies.
True, it's shark nature is downplayed, just like the Basking Shark, but if we're focusing
on size, this is one creature that lives up to the name both times.
The largest recorded Whale Shark came in at just under 62 feet long!
That's nearly 10 times my size!
Which is another thing that scares me to my core...I like being the biggest thing around...let's
move on.
So yeah, the Whale Shark is massive, but yet again, it's a kind creature.
It even likes when humans find it and swim with it.
Proving that Whale instincts trump Shark instincts yet again.
And like its Basking Shark brethren, it eats the smallest of things to survive.
In this case, plankton.
Nature truly is fully of wonders, isn't it?
3.
Oarfish Speaking of wonders, let's talk about one
that is so mysterious, so odd, and so rarely seen that when it first was taken in a picture,
people actually thought of as a hoax.
We speak of the Oarfish.
This is a large fish that is actually the largest "bony fish" alive.
In fact, the largest one found was 36 feet long.
And because of its look, with it being so slender and lacking in details on its sides,
has made many feel that these creatures are the reasons that tales of "sea serpents" or
even dragons were created.
Which would make sense to an extent as they're all over the world in waters that have temperate
or tropical temperatures.
However, just because a creature can be seen, doesn't mean it will.
Remember when I said that the first time it was seen it was thought of as a hoax?
Well, that's because the Oarfish resides in areas of the ocean far deeper than most humans
dare travel.
In fact, some scientists believe that they live at nearly 3000 feet below sea level.
The few times we do see them is when they wash up dead on shore, which makes you wonder
how it got there.
Still, it's not a hoax, that's for sure.

Blue Whale So, we've already talked about the biggest
fishes in the sea, but when it comes to mammals, there is only one candidate, the Blue Whale.
In fact, the Blue Whale is so huge, that it dwarfs many man-made creations.
This is a creature that is nearly 110 feet long!
That's basically an 11-story building, and it probably weighs as much as that building,
if not more!
Their average weight is 441,000 pounds.
Their hearts alone are the size of cars!
Can you hear the awe in my voice?
It's legit, the Blue Whale is a massive and wondrous part of nature.
Which, makes it all the more tragic that these majestic creatures were almost wiped out because
of commercial whaling.
Thankfully, humanity wised up, and they put out a global ban on whaling and were able
to get the numbers of the Blue Whales back to healthy sizes.
They're not out of the woods yet, but they're getting closer, and that is something to be
thankful for.
Here's a fun fact for you.
The "baby" whales?
When they're born, they're already 26 feet long and weigh around 8800 pounds.
That's a big baby!

Lion's Mane Jellyfish When we talked about the Portuguese Man-O-War,
we noted that its tentacles reached at their peak 135 feet long.
But noted that this was a rarity.
In contrast, the Lion's Mane Jellyfish averages a tentacle length of 120 feet.
And that's not including their bodies.
Which means that the tentacles alone are bigger than the biggest creature in the sea via the
Blue Whale.
That's extraordinary, and terrifying.
Shall I add to the terror?
The head of the Lion's Mane Jellyfish has been recorded being 7 feet in diameter.
Interestingly enough, this jellyfish prefers colder waters such as the Arctic Ocean and
the waters of the Northern Pacific Ocean.
Despite their long bodies, they're not that powerful in terms of propulsion, in fact,
they often rely on the oceans very own currents to guide them in one place or another.
Yet, that doesn't seem to be a problem in regards to getting food, for its tentacles
have a very wide range.
The Lion's Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish, and technically the longest creature to reside
within the oceans waters.
If you see one in the water, do your best to swim away before its tentacles sting you.
You'll thank me for it later.

Hello wonderful people of the internet! I hope you're doing well! Today, what I
wanted to talk about is a TV show that I've been watching the past month and
that is Outlander and it was a theme that kind of came up in the show all the
way through three seasons that have gone so far and it's on the theme of promises and
on giving someone your word that you're going to do something. I think the thing
I found really interesting is that the show is mostly set in the middle of the
18th century in Scotland and because it was a time where the British and
Scottish didn't get along so well there was a lot of like life-and-death
situations and what you can generally see in the Highlander culture is the way
that society works is based on these promises and on these oaths that you
give to the head of your clan that you will obey them and that you will know
it's you know it's it's an oath that you give with the whole of you basically and
I don't really think we do that in a lot of ways nowadays because so much of our
lives are compartmentalized into so many different fragments so to speak. I think
it's also really interesting because they have a lot in the show of saying
'I give you my word that I will do something' so for example 'I give you my
word that I will try and come back from a war I'm going to fight' or 'I give you
my word that I will return you safely home' or it's those kind of things and it
really interests me because basically one of the main characters is known for
the fact that when he gives you his word you know you can trust him you know that
he will he'll follow through and that he won't give his word lightly and the
thing I find really interesting is the fact that it doesn't feel like we give
those kinds of promises anymore, especially not on a daily basis and I
don't know if that's just because we don't live in life-and-death times. But I
also find it really interesting that giving your word in such a specific way
in a sense really helps to build your character because you have to hold
yourself accountable for a specific goal once it feels like a lot of the
commitments we give nowadays, especially to the people around us, aren't
necessarily they aren't always set in stone, they're very.... It feels like there
can be very fluid and they can make a really mould to whatever is happening and
of course that's great because obviously like, you know, we can't do this we can't
always fulfill the same responsibilities day to day and helping each other out is
really good but I find it really interesting that we don't necessarily
quantify or qualify what our commitments mean to one another as much. I think the
other thing I find very interesting about promises in that time is that
obviously people are more likely to follow you if they see that you follow
through with your word and that's really interesting to me because I feel
like a lot of the time nowadays it feels like we follow people sometimes more
because of the hierarchy rather than necessarily their character so sometimes...
I don't necessarily think obviously there's always going to be nuance with both of these and
I'm being very like black and white, but it feels like in terms of our and in
like jobs and things, we all follow people because of their position before
we know their character whilst it feels like in those situations, it was the kind
of time where people would only follow you if they believed in what you were, what you
were going for and basically because you know your character will kind of speak
for the cause itself so even if someone didn't know what cause you were fighting
for if they knew you and your character they would be more likely to want to
fight for your cause which I find really interesting but yeah I think the main
thing I would love to hear from you is how you see promises clearly manifested
in daily life like do you actually make those promises do you make verbal
promises very often and when you do what does
mean to you and how often do you think about how well you're keeping them?
Are they promises that you carry in day life or in a more like secrets where you're
like 'I promise I will not tell anyone.'

FOR, AND THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IT'S PRACTICAL,
IT'S TRANSCENDENT, BUT IT TOUCHES ALL OF LIFE
BECAUSE OUR GOD WHO'S OVER ALL THINGS IS IMMINENT IN
EVERYTHING, THE WHOLE UNIVERSE IS SUSTAINED BY
THE WORD OF HIS POWER.

WHEN I THINK ABOUT THE CHURCH, I THINK ABOUT THE
PREACHING OF THE WORD, I THINK ABOUT THE ORDER OF
WORSHIP AND THE ELEMENTS IN IT, THE SACRAMENTS OF
GREAT MANY THINGS, THEOLOGICAL LIBERALISM
DOES DAMAGE EVERYWHERE IT TURNS DOESN'T IT?
YES, WE CAN SAY THAT LIBERALISM HAS EMPTIED OUT
THE CHURCH OF EUROPE AND NOW IT'S WORKING ON
EMPTYING OUT THE CHURCH IN AMERICA.
ONCE WE GIVE UP ON BIBLICAL AUTHORITY
SUDDENLY WE ASK; WELL WHAT IS OUR AUTHORITY?
AND IT'S GOING TO BECOME INDIVIDUALISTICALLY OR
IT'S GOING TO BE CULTURAL IN ITS EXPRESSION.
AND OVER TIME, YOUNG PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE
PRETTY WISE.
THEY'LL SAY, YOU KNOW MOM AND DAD THEY'VE HUNG
AROUND AT THE CHURCH FOR A LONG TIME, BUT ALL THE
CHURCH DOES IS TELL ME WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE IS
DOING ANYWAY, I CAN DO BETTER THAN GIVING MY
MONEY TO AN INSTITUTION THAT'S REQUIRING OF ME
NOTHING MORE THAN WHAT I CAN DO ON THE OTHER
WEEKEND.
AND SO WHY GIVE MONEY TO THE CHURCH WHEN I CAN GET
A NEW MOTORBOAT, OR I CAN GO ON A BETTER VACATION,
OR A BIGGER HOUSE; PLUS I GET AN EXTRA DAY EVERY
WEEK AND I DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH ALL THE
HEADACHES OF AN INSTITUTION THAT I DON'T
WANT TO BE PART OF.
LIBERALISM TAKES AWAY ANY REASON FOR US TO SUPPORT
THE CHURCH OVERTIME, NOT IMMEDIATELY.
SOMEONE SAID THAT LIBERALS HAVE CHILDREN BUT THEY HAVE
NO GRANDCHILDREN, BECAUSE WE CANNOT PASS THE FAITH DOWN.
WHEN THE CHILDREN BEGIN TO PASS THERE'S NOTHING LEFT.
IT'S THAT CLAIM TO, AND COMMITMENT TO OBJECTIVE
ETERNAL REVEALED TRUTH THAT SUSTAINS THE LIFE OF
THE CHURCH.
SOME WOULD PUT SOREN KIERKEGAARD IN THE GROUP
OF MEN WHO RULE FROM THE GRAVE, YOU'RE OF THE
OPINION THAT YOU CAN FIND BOTH GOOD AND BAD IN
KIERKEGAARD; GIVE US UNDERSTANDING OF SOME OF
THE CONTRIBUTIONS HE MADE, BUT PERHAPS SOME OF THE
THINGS THAT HAVE LED US ASTRAY, IN OUR DAY.
WELL BASICALLY KIERKEGAARD'S VALUE WAS
THAT HE WAS LOOKING AT, LET'S SAY A KIND OF
WEAKENING, COMPLACENT LUTHERAN PROTESTANTISM IN
DENMARK, AND HE SAW IT AS, WELL EVERYBODY'S A
CHRISTIAN, IT'S A CULTURALLY CHRISTIAN
COUNTRY, AND HE SAID, THAT'S NOT WHAT
CHRISTIANITY IS, CHRISTIANITY IS THIS
RADICAL COMMITMENT TO THE BELIEF IN GOD WHO HAS COME
IN FLESH, WHO DIED AND ROSE AGAIN, WHO'S
DEMANDING EVERYTHING FROM US; AND SO HE WAS,
THEREFORE, REALLY CHALLENGING PEOPLE TO A
MUCH DEEPER COMMITMENT, AND YET WHILE HIS
COMMITMENT TO CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO FOR A REAL
RENEWED, AUTHENTIC LEAP OF FAITH, A DEPENDENCE UPON
GOD, ALSO WAS BUILT ON HIS, WHAT WE CAN SAY, A
RADIAL FIDEISM, A RADICAL BELIEF IN FAITH IN FAITH
ITSELF, IN OTHER WORDS HE SAID, I BELIEVE BECAUSE
IT'S ABSURD, I DON'T KNOW THAT THIS BIBLE IS TRUE, I
JUST CHOOSE TO BELIEVE IT IN SPITE OF IT; SO THAT
IDEA, IF YOU WILL, KIERKEGAARD'S THEOLOGY
UNDERMINES BIBLICAL APOLOGETICS, EVEN AS IT
CALLS FOR ABSOLUTE DECISIVE DISCIPLESHIP,
SO WHAT HE GIVES HE TAKES AWAY AT THE SAME TIME, AND
SO, THAT'S WHY WHEN WE LOOK AT KIERKEGAARD, WE
SEE SOMETHING GOOD AND WE SEE SOMETHING DANGEROUS.
HE SAID WHEN A PREACHER GETS UP AND PREACHES, HE
MUST NOT SAY THIS IS THE WORD OF THE LORD, THUS
SAYS THE LORD, HE DOESN'T SAY THUS FAR GOD'S WORD,
HE SAYS LISTEN FOR THE WORD OF GOD, BECAUSE YOU
JUST MIGHT HEAR IT.
SORT IT OUT AMONG THE WORDS OF MEN.
HIS VIEW IS, THE WORD OF GOD IS ONLY HEARD AND IS
PREACHED IN THE INDIVIDUALS HEART IT IS
NOT FOUND IN THE TEXT.
NOT OBJECTIVE.
IT'S NOT OBJECTIVE, IT'S IN THE EXPERIENCE.
SO WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU STOP HEARING THE WORD OF
GOD WHEN IT'S PREACHED, BECAUSE YOU SAY THAT'S
NOT, I DON'T HEAR ANYTHING IN THAT, THERE'S NOTHING
IN THAT BOOK WHY SHOULD I HEAR IT HERE.
I'M NOT SURE THE SPIRIT'S SPEAKING TO ME.
PRETTY SOON THE COMMITMENT TO THE THINGS OF THE
CHURCH BECOME IRRELEVANT.
AND THERE'S NO ACCIDENT THAT WHERE LIBERALISM
GOES, THE CHURCH SHRINKS AWAY.
IT'S NO ACCIDENT WHERE AUTHENTIC PROCLAMATION OF
A HEARTFELT, DEFENDED WITH LOGIC AND REASON AND
HISTORY, EVANGELICAL AND REFORMED WITNESS GOES THE
CHURCH TAKES ROOT, IT STRENGTHENS IT GROWS IT
SENDS OUT MISSIONARIES.
SO LIBERALISM, IF YOU WILL, IS A SLOW FORM OF
ECCLESIASTICAL SUICIDE.

SKEPTICS AND UNBELIEVERS AND YET STILL STANDS,
UNSCATHED IN SPITE OF THE ONSLAUGHT OF THE AGES.
"HAMMER AWAY, YE HOSTILE HANDS, YOUR HAMMERS BREAK,
GOD'S ANVIL STANDS.
THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURETH FOREVER."
LET'S LOOK TODAY AT THAT GREAT TEXT AND HOW GOD,
IN A SUPERNATURAL WAY, HAS SUSTAINED HIS WORD DOWN
THROUGH THE CENTURIES AGAINST ATTACKS FROM ALL
CLASSES AND RANKS OF MEN.
CONSIDER THIS: THAT NUMEROUS KINGS WITH THE
SCEPTER OF STATE IN ONE HAND,
HAVE TAKEN UP THE HAMMER OF UNBELIEF WITH THE
OTHER, AND HAVE ATTEMPTED, WITH ALL OF THE POWER OF
GOVERNMENT ITSELF, TO SMASH THE ANVIL OF GOD.
FOR EXAMPLE: HEROD THE GREAT, AS YOU KNOW,
DISCOVERED THAT THE WISE MEN DECLARED THAT THE ONE
WHO WAS TO BE RULER IN ISRAEL HAD BEEN BORN AND
HE GATHERED TOGETHER THE WISE MEN TO FIND OUT WHERE
THIS PRINCE SHOULD BE BORN.
AND THEY SAID UNTO HIM, "IN BETHLEHEM;
FOR THUS IT IS WRITTEN IN THE PROPHET,
'THOU BETHLEHEM EPHRATA, THOUGH THOU BE LEAST AMONG
THE TRIBES OF JUDAH; YET OUT OF THEE SHALL HE COME

THE WORD OF GOD WAS FULFILLED;
AND HE THAT WAS TO RULE HIS PEOPLE CAME FORTH OUT
OF BETHLEHEM AFTER ALL.

OR CONSIDER SOME MODERN KINGS OR RULERS: HITLER
AND MUSSOLINI BOTH SET THEMSELVES OBSTINATELY
AGAINST THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AND AGAINST HIS WORD.
HITLER, WHO CALLED HIMSELF A COMPLETE PAGAN
DETERMINED TO UPROOT CHRISTIANITY, ROOT AND BRANCH.
AND MUSSOLINI DECLARED THAT THE CHURCH WOULD SOON
CEASE TO EXIST.
AND YET THE TIME CAME WHEN HITLER'S CHARRED BODY WAS
FOUND IN A BUNKER IN GERMANY AND MUSSOLINI HUNG
BY HIS FEET IN THE TOWN SQUARE IN ROME AND THE
WORD OF GOD GOES ON TODAY.
"THE WORD OF THE LORD, INDEED, ENDURETH FOREVER.
IT IS A WORD BY WHICH THE GOSPEL IS PREACHED UNTO YOU.
A GOSPEL WHICH CAN TRANSFORM LIVES AND
SOCIETIES.
AND HOW POWERFUL IS THAT WORD?
CENTURY FOLLOWED CENTURY, BUT THERE IT STANDS.
DYNASTY SUCCEEDS DYNASTY, BUT THERE IT STANDS.
KINGS ARE CROWNED AND OVERTHROWN, BUT THERE
IT STANDS.
DESPISED AND TORN TO PIECES, THERE IT STANDS.
THE TOOTH OF TIME GNAWS AND MAKES NO DENT,
AND THERE IT STANDS.
AN ANVIL UPON WHICH HAVE BEEN BROKEN A MILLION
HAMMERS.
HAMMER AWAY, YE HOSTILE HANDS.
YOUR HAMMERS BREAK, GOD'S ANVIL STANDS.
THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURETH FOREVER.
EFFORTS TO DIMINISH THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE ALL
HAVE THE SAME FORCE AND EFFECT- THEY UNDERCUT THE
GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST.
WE HAVE SEEN THIS SAD REALITY REPEATEDLY, AS
VARIOUS AMERICAN DENOMINATIONS REJECT THE
INFALLIBILITY AND INERRANCY OF GOD'S WORD.
THE SO-CALLED MAINLINE CHURCHES HAVE BEEN ON THIS
TRAJECTORY FOR DECADES, WITH THEIR MEMBERSHIP
PRACTICALLY EMPTYING OUT, AS TRENDY SOCIAL JUSTICE
ISSUES REPLACE THE CROSS OF CHRIST.
BUT IN ONE INSTITUTION WHERE THIS ENCROACHING
THEOLOGICAL AND POLITICAL LIBERALISM HAD A FULL HEAD
OF STEAM, A BRAVE MAN WITH STRONG CONVICTIONS ON THE
AUTHORITY OF SCRIPTURE STEPPED IN.
OUR OWN JOHN RABE HAS MORE.
THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IS
THE OLDEST OF THE SIX SOUTHERN BAPTIST
SEMINARIES.
LIBERALISM SPREAD WIDELY ON THIS FACULTY, SO THAT
BY THE 1960'S, THE FACULTY WAS THOROUGHLY LIBERAL.
SOUTHERN SEMINARY WAS OUR MOST PRESTIGIOUS SEMINARY
AND LITERALLY, LITERALLY WE HAD 2 PROFESSORS WHO
WERE INERRANTISTS.
ONE STUDENT WHO GRADUATED FROM THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST
THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IN THE 1980'S WAS ALBERT
MOHLER.
WHEN I ARRIVED HERE AS A STUDENT IN 1980, TO BE
HONEST, I HAD A DUAL EXPERIENCE.
ON THE ONE HAND, I WAS THRILLED WITH THE
INSTITUTION.
IT REALLY HIT ALL OF MY INTELLECTUAL INTEREST
BUTTONS.
BUT THE OTHER SIDE OF IT WAS THAT THEOLOGICALLY I
BECAME VERY MUCH AN ALIEN.
AS I BEGAN TO HEAR THINGS THAT I JUST KNEW WERE NOT
RIGHT.
BY THE TIME ALBERT MOHLER GRADUATED FROM THE
SEMINARY WITH HIS PH. D THERE WAS A BATTLE FOR
THE TRUSTWORTHINESS OF THE BIBLE RAGING ACROSS
THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION.
SOUTHERN BAPTISTS DID NOT SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT
THEIR MONEY, GIVEN TO THE DENOMINATION WAS GOING TO
PAY THE SALARIES OF PROFESSORS HERE WHO WERE
UNDERMINING THE FAITH OF THE YOUNG MEN AND YOUNG
WOMEN WHO THEY WERE SENDING TO THIS INSTITUTION.
A MOVEMENT BEGAN AMONG THE CHURCHES TO APPOINT
CONSERVATIVE TRUSTEES OF SOUTHERN SEMINARY WHO
BELIEVED IN THE FULL INERRANCY AND
TRUSTWORTHINESS OF THE BIBLE.
BUT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE THAT COULD BE DONE UNTIL
YOU HIRE A NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE.
AND SO IN 1993, THEY WERE ABLE TO INITIATE A SEARCH
FOR A NEW PRESIDENT AND GOD RAISED UP R. ALBERT MOHLER.
WHEN I WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT, THAT WAS JUST
THE OPENING OF THE DOOR TO THE KIND OF REFORMATION
THAT HAD TO TAKE PLACE.
AND AS SOON AS I WAS NAMED, EVEN BEFORE I WAS
ELECTED, THE BATTLE STARTED.
THE SEMINARY HAD A STATEMENT OF FAITH CALLED
"THE ABSTRACT OF PRINCIPLES" THAT ALL
PROFESSORS WERE SUPPOSED TO ABIDE BY THAT AFFIRMED SUCH
BASIC CHRISTIAN TRUTHS AS THE TRINITY, THE BODILY
RESURRECTION OF CHRIST, AND THE NECESSITY OF FAITH
IN CHRIST FOR SALVATION.
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT ALMOST EVERY ARTICLE IN
THE ABSTRACT HAD TO HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED BY
TEACHING IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER.
WHEN I WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT, AND FOR MANY
YEARS BEFORE THAT, I ENCOUNTERED A FACULTY WHO
CLAIMED AN INDIVIDUAL RIGHT OF INTERPRETATION OF
THE CONFESSION OF FAITH.
WELL, THAT MEANS THAT THE CONFESSION OF FAITH IS
ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS.
EVERY SINGLE FACULTY MEMBER HAS TO SIGN A
CONTRACT PLEDGING TO TEACH IN ACCORDANCE WITH AND NOT
CONTRARY TO ALL THAT IS CONTAINED THEREIN.
I KNEW WHEN I DELIVERED MY OPENING CONVOCATION
ADDRESS BACK IN 1993 THAT IT WAS, IN ESSENCE, A
DECLARATION OF WAR.
AND SO WHEN I WALKED IN THE CHAPEL FOR THAT FIRST
CONVOCATION, A GOOD NUMBER OF THE STUDENT LEADERS
ACTUALLY STOOD AND TURNED THEIR BACK TO ME AS I
PREACHED.
I PREACHED A MESSAGE ENTITLED "DON'T JUST DO
SOMETHING, STAND THERE," ON THE NATURE OF SOUTHERN
SEMINARY AS A CONFESSIONAL INSTITUTION.
I WALKED THROUGH THE CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS OF
THE FACULTY MEMBER, AND THEN I WALKED THROUGH THE
CONFESSION OF FAITH.
AND I SAID, "IF YOU STAND IN THESE TRUTHS, THEN YOU
NEED TO STAY HERE.
BUT IF YOU DO NOT, YOU HAVE ALREADY HEARD BY THE
VERY WORDS OF THE CONTRACT YOU SIGNED THAT YOU SHOULD
NOT BE TEACHING IN THIS INSTITUTION."
DR. MOHLER'S COMMITMENT TO REFORMING THE SEMINARY
IGNITED A FIRESTORM OF PROTEST AMONG STUDENTS
AND FACULTY.
THERE WERE DAYS IN WHICH I HAD PROTESTERS IN THE
HALLWAYS, STUDENTS FOR UPWARDS OF 70 DAYS WITH A
VIGIL, AND A SIT-IN.
THAT DRAWS ATTENTION.
WE HAD TELEVISION CAMERAS ALL OVER THE PLACE.
WE HAD HELICOPTERS OVER THE CAMPUS EVERY TIME WE
HAD SOME KIND OF EVENT.
I WAS AMBUSHED BY REPORTERS SEVERAL TIMES A
WEEK.
I SAW SOMETHING HANGING FROM ONE OF THE TREES, AND
I TURNED TO MY VICE PRESIDENT, AND I SAID,
"WHAT'S THAT?"
AND A LITTLE AWKWARDLY, HE SAID, "THAT'S YOU."
I'D BEEN HUNG IN EFFIGY.
NOW I KNOW THAT IT'S BEEN DONE TO OTHERS BEFORE.
IT'S NOT SOMETHING I HAD CONTEMPLATED BEING DONE OF
ME.
BUT YOU KNOW, SOMEHOW THE LORD JUST USED ALL OF THAT
TO STEEL MY RESOLVE.
I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF AL DIDN'T FEEL THE NEED
FOR A FOOD TASTER FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS THERE, THE
FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS HE WAS THERE, BECAUSE I MEAN
HE WAS HATED.
IT WAS A VERY STRANGE THING TO COME HERE FROM
LIKE THE IDYLLIC SUBURBAN ATLANTA NEIGHBORHOOD, JUST
NORMAL FAMILY WITH TWO KIDS, TO BE VAULTED HERE
TO A DIFFERENT CALLING.
THERE WERE PROTESTS OUT IN THE FRONT LAWN OF OUR HOME
WHICH IS QUITE FINE TO A FOUR YEAR OLD AND A ONE
YEAR OLD WHO JUST ASSUME IT'S A PARTY, THEY DIDN'T
UNDERSTAND, THEY WEREN'T READING THE HEADLINES,
THEY WEREN'T WATCHING THE EVENING NEWS, THEY WEREN'T
READING THE STUFF THAT WAS GOING ON AND SO THEY WERE
REALLY PROTECTED FROM THAT.
MANY WERE THE DAYS EARLY ON WHEN AL WOULD COME HOME
FOR DINNER AND I WOULD JUST SEE THIS LOOK ON HIS
FACE, YOU COULD JUST TELL BY HIS DEMEANOR THAT SOME
OTHER SHOE HAD DROPPED, AND THAT SOMETHING ELSE
HAD HAPPENED.
ONE OF THE MOST SENIOR MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY,
TURNED TO ME AND HE SAID, WE HAVE OUR OWN RIGHT
TO INTERPRET WHAT THE CONFESSION OF FAITH SAYS.
YOU HAVE NO RIGHT, NOR DO THE TRUSTEES, NOR DOES THE
SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION, NOR DO THE
FOUNDERS OF THE INSTITUTION, HAVE ANY
RIGHT TO SAY, 'THIS IS WHAT EVERYONE MUST
BELIEVE.
THIS IS HOW EVERYONE MUST UNDERSTAND THESE WORDS.'
AND HE LOOKED TO ME AND SAID, "WHAT ARE YOU GONNA
SAY TO THAT?"
AND I SIMPLY SAID, "YOU'RE FIRED."
AND THERE WAS A BIT OF SHOCK IN THE ROOM.
AND, HE TURNED TO ME, AND HE SAID, "YOU'LL NOT GET
AWAY WITH THAT."
AND THE REASON FOR THAT, WHICH HE MADE CLEAR, IS
BECAUSE HE HAS A CONTRACT.
BUT YOU KNOW, HE JUST SAID THAT EVERYONE HAS THE
RIGHT TO INTERPRET EVERY TEXT FOR HIMSELF.
SO ALL OF A SUDDEN NOW, WE HAD TWO SETS OF RULES: ONE
SET OF RULES WHEN IT CAME TO THE CONFESSION OF
FAITH- YOU CAN INTERPRET IT ANYWAY YOU WANNA
INTERPRET IT- AND THEN ANOTHER SET WITH HIS
CONTRACT.
DR. MOHLER, BECAUSE WE HAD A MAJORITY OF THE TRUSTEES
WHO ELECTED HIM AS PRESIDENT HE WAS ABLE,
OVER TIME, TO SUBTRACT FROM THE SEMINARY MOST OF
THOSE PROFESSORS.
NOW HE DIDN'T HAVE TO FIRE, BUT ONE OR TWO, MOST
OF THEM LEFT.
90% OF THE PEOPLE BELIEVED IN THE INERRANCY OF
SCRIPTURE BUT YOU HAD SEMINARIES WHERE 1% OR
LESS OF THE PROFESSORS BELIEVED THAT INERRANCY
AND WE WERE ABLE TO TURN IT AROUND SO THAT NOW, AS
I SPEAK TO YOU, WE HAVE 6 SOUTHERN BAPTIST
SEMINARIES AND EVERY PROFESSOR IN EVERY
DEPARTMENT OF EACH OF OUR 6 SEMINARIES BELIEVES IN
THE INERRANCY AND THE INFALLIBILITY OF EVERY
PART OF THE WORD OF GOD.
IT'S SO HARD TO THINK BACK TO THOSE DAYS NOW BECAUSE
THIS IS SUCH A HAPPY PLACE AND WE HAVE SUCH A
WONDERFUL TEAM OF PEOPLE HERE NOW WHO WORK WITH US
THAT IT STRETCHES THE IMAGINATION TO REALIZE
THAT IT WASN'T ALWAYS THAT WAY.
WHAT HARDLY SEEMS POSSIBLE IS THAT THE LORD HAS
PROSPERED THIS INSTITUTION IN WHICH WE'RE NOW ABLE TO
LOOK AT ABOUT 4500 STUDENTS, ONE OF THE
LARGEST THEOLOGICAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE
HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.
YOU KNOW, I OFTEN TELL PEOPLE, THE LORD ALLOWED
ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD THE SEMINARY THAT
I WOULD WANT TO ATTEND.
WE THANK GOD FOR THE LIKES OF AL MOHLER AT THE
SOUTHERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY FOR
HIS COURAGE IN DEFENDING THE TRUTH OF SCRIPTURE.

DENOMINATIONS HAVE BEEN HOLLOWED OUT FROM WITHIN,
AND YET BILLY GRAHAM CONTINUED TO DRAW MILLIONS
TO HEAR HIS CLEAR AND BIBLICALLY FAITHFUL GOSPEL
MESSAGE- RIGHT UP TO HIS FINAL EVANGELISTIC
CRUSADE.

"Origins" Elon Musk was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South
Africa.
He lived there until the age of 17 when he moved to Kingston, Canada in order to avoid
the mandatory military service required of South African citizens.
There he attended the prestigious Queen's University before moving to the United States,
where he finished his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania with two
bachelor's degrees, one in Physics and one in Economics.
He became an American citizen in 2002 and his main residence is currently in Bel Air,
California.
Number 14.
"Drop-Out" After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania,
he set his sights on getting his doctorate in energy physics.
He was accepted into one of the best graduate programs for science in the United States
at Stanford University so he packed up and moved across the country to California.
His attendance didn't last long however, as after two days he grew bored with class
and decided he'd rather get right down to business and dropped out to form the company
Zip2 with his brother Kimbal.
Number 13.
"Zip2" The Musk brothers founded the company Zip2
in 1995, on the idea of creating an online version of yellowpages.
They used a $28,000 loan from their father to start and after finally finding some prominent
investors the company took off, becoming one of the main creators of business directories
and maps for the websites of newspapers throughout the country.
Only four years later, the Musk brothers had multiplied that initial $28,000 almost 11,000
times as they sold Zip2 to the computer company Compaq for $307 million.
Elon's cut of which was $22 million.
Number 12.
"PayPal" Musk used the money he made from the sale
of Zip2 to help found the website X.com which would eventually merge with the company Confinity
and become the online banking and money transfer service juggernaut PayPal.
Three years after starting X.com, PayPal was sold to eBay for a whopping $1.5 billion.
Notably, Musk wouldn't be the only former employee of PayPal that would go on to further
success, as the founders of LinkedIn, Yelp, Youtube and the current CEO of Reddit all
worked there and are part of what is now referred to as the PayPal Mafia.
Number 11.
"McCrashin F1" Back in his days at PayPal, Musk purchased
a brand new McLaren F1, which was at the time the fastest car in the world, and cost him
around one million dollars.
However, the thrills that come with owning one out of 106 of these cars that were made,
didn't last long.
Only a couple of years later, during a reckless ride with fellow billionaire Peter Thiel,
he hit an embankment and totaled the car.
The worst part?
He never insured the car, his reasoning?
"I had read all these stories about people who made money and bought sports cars and
crashed them.
But I knew it would never happen to me, so I didn't get any insurance".
Number 10.
"Club Tuition" Education can be expensive and though he is
a billionaire now, Musk was once a broke college student who spent nights worrying about how
he was gonna pay for his tuition.
Except Musk isn't the normal person, he didn't worry too long as he was born with
an entrepreneurial superbrain and quickly thought of a brilliant way to make money.
Along with his best friend, he rented a mansion and turned it into nightclub-themed party
hotspot, charging a five dollar admission.
With parties that sometimes reached upwards of 500 people, he no longer had to worry about
debt after graduation.
Number 9.
"Cheap Date" Another way that Musk helped to pay for his
education and save money for his future was by surviving on very little.
In several interviews he has said that he spent less than a dollar a day on food in
college, fueling his studies with cheap noodles that he dressed up with free condiments like
red pepper packets.
So if you are currently a college student scraping by or will be in the future, you
can add extra flavor to that Ramen with the thought that even some of the most successful
businessmen have had to pay for food with pocket change
Number 8.
"Triple & Double" Though he is only 46, Musk has already had
a whirlwind personal life having been married three times.
In his defense, two of the marriages were to the same person, Talulah Riley, though
they both ended in divorce.
His first marriage, to Justine Wilson, produced all five of his children.
His five children are all boys and in what sounds like a bit of barroom trivia, were
all born within a three year span.
In fact, the five Musk boys were the result of only two pregnancies, as in 2004 Justine
had twins and followed that up with triplets in 2006.
The bountiful pregnancies were products of in vitro fertilization which does significantly
increase the odds for multiple births.
The boys are named Saxon, Griffin, Damian, Kai and Xavier who he admitted was named after
Professor X from the X-Men comic books.
The boon of offspring couldn't have come to more deserving parents as their first son,
Nevada, did not live past infancy.
Number 7.
"Wiz Kid" Even before reaching puberty Musk had come
into his own as wizard with technology.
He coded his first video game at the age of twelve and of course it space-themed.
The game was called Blastar and he actually sold the code to a magazine called PC and
Office Technology for $500.
The game itself is very simple, you are a spaceship that tries to fight off alien ships
with a laser gun.
It doesn't look like much, but it is an impressive feat when you consider it was made
in the early 80s and Musk was only twelve years old.
Thanks to Tomas Lloret, a software engineer for Google, you can now find a playable version
of Blastar online.
Number 6.
"Awards and Honors" Over his career which continues to skyrocket
towards legendary innovator status Musk has picked up several prestigious awards.
In 2010, the Federation Aeronautique Internationale also known as The World Air Sports Federation
bestowed on him the Gold Space Medal which is one of their highest honors.
In 2013, Fortune Magazine named him businessperson of the year.
Though there are many other awards he has won, one of the most esteemed list he has
made was when Esquire put him at number 39 on their list of the 75 most influential people
of the 21st century, which with his current endeavors we can't see him leaving in the
foreseeable future.
Number 5.
"Money-Man Musk" Elon Musk is one of the richest people in
the world but where exactly does he rank among the world's wealthiest?
Well with his current net worth of just over 20 billion dollars he currently holds the
position of the 58th richest person in the world.
What is more astonishing is his place as the 7th richest person on Earth under the age
of 50.
With his brilliant knack for being ahead of the curve on technology and his tone-setting
dealings in the field of space travel it isn't hard to see him eventually overtaking Gates
and the closer-in-age Zuckerberg in the near future.
Speaking of Gates and Zuckerberg, Musk has recently joined them in the Giving Pledge
movement, which is a willful promise some of the world's wealthiest have made to donate
the majority of their wealth to charity over the years.
Number 4.
"Gigafactory" One of the projects that Elon Musk holds most
dear to his heart is that of the Gigafactory.
In what Musk claims will be the biggest building in the world, the gigafactory, (currently
being built in the desert of Nevada) he hopes to become the leading manufacturer of rechargeable
eco-friendly lithium-ion batteries and run whole shebang on wind and solar power.
He not only has broken ground on this site but has at least four other gigafactories
in the works in Europe and North America.
Nevada has already felt a significant impact in its economy from the factory (which although
it was technically opened in 2016, isn't anticipated to be fully completed until 2020)
and several experts have predicted that the state could earn billions on a yearly basis
by merely hosting it.
Number 3.
"The Musk Who Loved Me" If you have ever seen the 1977 James Bond
Film 'A Spy Who Love Me' you will recognize this car.
It's a Lotus Esprit S1 also known as 'Wet Nellie' and you might remember it having
the cool feature of being able to turn into a submarine.
As you can probably guess the car couldn't really transform in real-life.
Well, that didn't bother Musk as he was such a big fan of the movie--especially this
gadget-laden car-- that he decided to buy it.
He bought at an auction in 2013 for close to one million dollars and if you have learned
anything about Elon Musk you probably realize that he wouldn't be content just keeping
this beauty in the garage.
No, not only does he drive it but he has been busy modifying and customizing it so that
it can actually convert into a submarine and of course, make it completely electric with
a suped-up Tesla electric powertrain.
Number 2.
"Real Life Tony Stark" If you have seen any of the live action Iron
Man movies you will know that the main character of Tony Stark is a suave yet brash billionaire
genius who almost has no filter between his brain and hist mouth.
Robert Downey Jr. plays the role excellently with controlled bravado and just a hint of
quirkiness.
What does this have to do with Elon Musk?
Well if you know anything about Musk's personality the traits we just listed might sound familiar.
This is more than just a coincidence as Downey actually based of much his portrayal of Tony
Stark off the mannerisms and attitude of Musk.
A big comic book fan himself, Musk was flattered by this and even appeared in a cameo role
in Iron Man 2.
Number 1.
"Dragon" Musk has recently made significant strides
with his company SpaceX and the successfully test launch Falcon Heavy, the most powerful
working rocket in the world.
But before that, Musk and SpaceX had already changed the game when it comes to space travel.
One could even say that he helped bring it into the 21st Century.
With their revolutionary Dragon spacecraft that is completely reusable they helped reduce
the cost of transporting cargo to the International Space Station from $1 billion dollars to $60
million, a cost reduction of over 90 percent.
Dragon also has the distinction of being the first commercial spacecraft to ever dock at
the International Space Station and the first commercially operated spacecraft to be recovered
after achieving orbit.
Since its first supply trip in 2012, Dragon has successfully completed eleven out of twelve
missions as part of the Commercial Resupply Service Contract SpaceX has with NASA.

How to Write a Killer Cover Letter - Duration: 7:37.
Hey there! My name is Chelsea and
you are watching The Student Architect!
Today we're going to talk about how to write a killer cover letter.
So the 1st step in this process is the prep work.
So this is where you'll want to find firms that you actually want to work for and want to apply to.
Have a story about how you learned about them or how you found them.
Firms always love to hear about how people are finding them.
And you might even know somebody at the firm that you're trying to applying to
and you can even mention them in your cover letter.
The 2nd step is setting up the email.
Make sure you're using a professional email.
You can either use your school email
or you can make a new email with just your name
so that it's something that's professional, rather than something like BeachCutie98
Now about the subject line, you'll want it to be descriptive so that whoever's reading your email
will know what it's about before they open it and that it's not written off as spam.
It could be something like,
Architectural Designer Position - Career Opportiunities
It's brief, but descriptive.
The 3rd step in the process is, writing the cover letter.
So you'll want to start off with, Dear "so and so"
If you're writing to a person, like an HR person, or the principal of a firm,
then you'll want to address your email to them.
But if you're writing to an info or careers email,
then you'll want to address your email to the firm.
I've always found that it's better if you can write to an actual person,
So if there's any way you can find
an actual person's email from the firm that your trying to apply to, I highly suggest doing that.
Start off by introducing yourself.
Explain your current position, if you are a student, a recent grad, or whatever your job title is,
and your particular focus or experience.
Like if you're interested in sustainability or if have experience with mostly residential projects,
that'll be pretty important information for them to know.
Next tell the firm about how you learned about them
and their unique qualities that drew you to them in the first place
This is where you can mention the person you know that works at the firm,
and make sure to make them look good,
but do it in a genuine way, this will only help both of you.
After that, you can tell them about the qualities that drew you to them in the first place.
And this is where you can throw in that one sentence summary
about the unique qualities that they have that you admire.
Then tell them your ideas about the future, how you feel that working for them will help you
grow and develop as a professional.
Then, compliment them on something that you admire about them.
Maybe it's their attention to detail, maybe it's their ability to work on a variety of different projects
and do them well.
Whatever it is, every company likes to hear things that people admire about them.
Next, conclude this paragraph with a statement explaining what you're looking for.
If you're looking for a summer internship, if you're looking for more experience at a larger firm,
or whatever position that has just opened up.
If it's an architectural designer position, and architect position, whatever it is.
Now step 4 is where you'll tell them about you.
You've spent the first paragraph talking about them, and how you think they're a good fit for you,
but now you have to convince them why you're a good fit for their company.
Here's where you'll talk about the types of projects that you have experience with,
the types of programs that you use, and how long you've been using them and [been] working within the industry.
Now you can talk about any past internships or prior jobs that you've had related to the industry and
and you can talk about how they've shaped you as a professional.
Next you can talk about your long-standing interest in the industry and you can even throw in a one
sentence story about something related to your interests from when you were younger.
And this way you can add a personal touch to your email.
For example it could be something like: "while my sister was busy reading fashion magazines, I was off reading
Architectural Digest..." True story.
It's brief, but it also gives them an idea about who I am.
Finish off this paragraph by telling them that you would benefit from working with such a diverse company
and that you know that you have a lot to offer them as well.
Tell them how you feel you could add a lot of value to their company, through your unique skills and motivation
which compliments theirs.
Tell them about your work ethic and how you're eager to move forward within your career.
Step 5 is the final paragraph.
This is where you'll want to inform them of any files that you've attached to your email.
If you have a resume and a portfolio,
be sure to attach them as two separate PDF files.
This is so that if your portfolio takes a while to load, they can still review your resume as they're waiting.
Make sure that the titles of your attachments are descriptive.
They should have your name, what they are, and what year they're from. So something like,
JaneDoe_Resume_2018
This way they know what it is, who it's from, and when it's from without even having to open the document.
Feel free to also add in the position you're apply for as well.
Finally, end this paragraph by inviting them to contact you for any additional information, for clarification,
or for any follow up purposes.
Politely thank them for considering you and tell them how you're looking forward to hearing from them.
Step 6 is the sign off.
Some people tend to get really caught up with their sign off on their emails.
I think it's simple as long as you choose something that's professional and classic.
For instance, I like to use "sincerely" or "kindest regards"
They're simple, respectful, and professional.
Now, if you've made it this far into the video, I have a bonus tip for you!
Step #7 is about your email signature.
So many people, especially students and young professionals, tend to neglect their
signatures which is prime real estate to really showcase your work.
This is the perfect place to add links to your online portfolio,
other related professional works you've posted online,
your Linkedin profile, or any other digital content that you've posted online that you want employers to see,
you can link to them in your email signature.
And instead of using a URL link, you should write in whatever you're linking to, if it's your Linkedin profile,
write in Linkedin or Linkedin Profile and then use a hyperlink to then link to that page.
And finally, you can even put your cell phone number if that's something you're interested in as well.
Now this doesn't mean you should put everything under the sun in your email signature.
It should really be a well-curated section of your email that is very clean looking
and only shows them what you want them to see.
