Alright, let's go.
Yes, that was my epic unboxing montage.
And if I do any more product reviews, you can probably expect to see more of those.
So, yes or no, is this tablet worth the money?
Yes.
Because, as of the time of me releasing this video, it is only $70 on Amazon, and there
are links to that in the description.
So, when I was younger, I had to wait to get my first tablet for quite a while.
There was a pretty lengthy period of time where I would just draw on paper, scan it
and then color it with a mouse, in GIMP.
At the Library.
But nowadays that just does not have to happen.
If you have a computer, you can do digital art.
If you have a computer, there is no excuse.
You don't need Photoshop, you don't need a Wacom Cintiq, you apparently don't even
need a Wacom at all, if that's something that you can't afford.
Two hundred dollars is hard.
But seventy dollars is less hard.
Ask someone to get it for you, and pay them back with free art.
No I'm just kidding, do not do that.
But really, ask for it for Christmas, or save up and get it yourself.
If digital art is something that you have been waiting to get into, and you have a desktop
computer or a laptop, stop waiting.
Download Medibang Paint for free and get your hands on a Gaomon M106K, and you can become
a digital artist for cheaper than some digital artists commision prices.
Now, is this tablet any good?
Yes.
Is it great?
Yes.
Mostly.
I've actually stuck with the same drawing tablet before for quite a while now, I've
been using the Wacom Intuos 4M.
And as you saw, it looks just about the same as the Gaomon M106k that they sent me.
So of course I've had no real issues with the Wacom, but how did the Gaomon shape up?
Well, let me tell you.
So I am drawing this pirate knight character concept as suggested by some friends over
on art amino.
Speaking of which, if you have art amino, search for my name, I am there.
Link in description as well.
So anyway I had sketched it before the Gaomon tablet arrived, and I decided that I would
color it with the new tablet.
As you saw from my unboxing, everything was clean, neat, and well-packaged.
The Gaomon box was very nice, and undamaged as well.
My very first impression was that the tablet was very light, much lighter than the Wacom
Intuos, which is of comparable size.
So I was a bit surprised in that regard.
However the Intuos is pretty old so, maybe they just come lighter nowadays.
I couldn't tell ya.
I almost didn't see the wires for the new tablet, they were in a small compartment of
the side of the box.
The whole thing is packed very efficiently.
So I plugged it into my computer and immediately made a mistake.
The software drivers for the wacom were still installed on my PC.
And I did not realize that you have to uninstall the old drivers before installing the new
ones.
And so I just installed the new ones, right over top of the old ones, and then I thought
the new tablet was defective because it wasn't working right.
But no, it was human error, specifically mine.
As much as I love being a digital artist, computers are just heck.
Windows 10 specifically is very heck, but hey, I am grateful to God that I do in fact
have a computer and means of creating my artwork.
I mean I would still do it if I was still stuck with pencils and printer paper like
when I was four.
But, the moral of the story is if you get your hands on a new tablet, make sure you
uninstall all tablet drivers before plugging in and installing drivers for that new tablet.
And if that is obvious information to you, than just remember, I am an old man and easily
confused.
So once I got the drivers squared away, I starting messing around with the tablet settings,
and everything I needed was there.
It has pressure sensitivity, over 2,000 levels from what it says, and that seems accurate.
It was very responsive in the tablet settings application, but one thing that you'll want
to fix in settings before you start, is to turn off "Windows ink".
Windows Ink is unnecessary, and if you have it on while you are trying to draw, it'll
think that your brush strokes are mouse scrolls.
So I just turned that off and it worked like a charm.
So once I finally got the tablet up and running I started drawing right away.
The main things I wanted to test for were lag, accuracy, and the shortcut buttons.
So as far as lag, there was none.
The canvas I was working on was about 3,000 by 4,500 pixels, and it did not lag one bit.
The accuracy seemed spot-on.
I've spent hundreds and hundreds of hours drawing with the Wacom Intuos, and it didn't
feel different at all to me to draw with the Gaomon M106K.
So in that respect I was fine as well.
The other thing was the shortcut buttons.
So as you saw during my epic unboxing montage, in addition to the twelve hotkeys on the side,
it has sixteen of what are called "soft-keys".
And these are basically even more hotkeys that you can hit with the pen.
So all in all it has twenty-eight shortcut buttons, and that's really neat.
I didn't really like the soft-keys, because hitting them with the pen was kind of tricky
for me.
Plus I don't really need more than twelve shortcuts, at that point I would just use
the keyboard.
But I'm sure it's a nice feature if you're into that sorta thing, and the twelve physical
buttons were spot on.
I mapped them to different things, like flipping the canvas, switching to the zoom cool, saving
my document, et cetera.
The reason I chose this artpiece specifically was that I'm coloring it in a way that's
using the full capabilities of the new tablet.
So for the flat colors, I used the lasso tool.
And the lasso tool of course does not require pen pressure, so I was purely testing the
accuracy and responsiveness, and again, zero lag.
As you can see, the lines are very clean and I had no trouble making them.
For the next stage of the artwork I used the hard round brush with pressure size and opacity.
And again, the pressure felt it did like with my old tablet.
After a certain point I wasn't even thinking about the fact that this was a different tablet.
So the quality was on par with Wacom in that respect.
In conclusion, the pros of the tablet are as follows.
No lag, much accuracy, works just like a Wacom intuos, very very low price.
The cons are, the drivers can be a bit tricky to set up, the tablet doesn't have wide-spread
support with Adobe, and the pen has to be charged.
However, I used the pen for over eight hours straight without charging it so I don't
think that'll really be a con.
I was very surprised and happy with this tablet and I recommend it to anybody who does not
already have a drawing tablet.
I don't even think I'm going to switch back to my Wacom tablet immediately, because
I actually like the shortcuts on the Gaomon quite a bit more.
In short, the tablet is recommended.
I created this illustration with it, spent about six hours total and had no more trouble
than I would with a Wacom.
Good job, Gaomon, ya made a good thing.
