Youtube daily report May 21 2018

Out of clay molded God a man

and a small piecel was left unused.

What else would I sculpt for you?- -God asked.

Sculpt me Happiness,-the man answered.

God said nothing

and just put this piece into the man's hand.

Yerevan State Conservatory

THE FIRST STEPS CREATOR

10 years later you understand

that the idea which was formed

and the wish to create a Symphony Orchestra

we never even thought of Orchestra

we didn't even imagine

how it all worked.

Sergey and me were talking in the Conservatory

between the lectures

and he told me: "You know, I have this idea,

we will create an Orchestra".

And I said to him immediately: "The pianist you have".

We have Student Orchestras as a discipline

from the first to the fourth year

And I was already in fifth.

But my teacher said:

"You know, they need help, they are all beginners."

I came and I have stayed with them ever since.

When we formed the orchestra

we were not 90 people.

At the beginning it was a small chamber orchestra

then brass players came.

And the core- all friends.

And still the core are friends, work together with Sergey.

No envy- nothing of this kind

Friendship

like we're all friends and gathered all together

and do what we like best in our life.

All of them came to me and said:

"Our wish is to create a new Youth Symphony Orchestra."

" Let's try"- I told them.

And in 2-3 years the quality was such

they did not differ in the least from any professional orchestra

Orchestra it's like an organism

It is a mystical feeling so to speak

it's things we believe

Because Orchestra is not just a team of musicians

it's traditions, it's respect, it's ideological partners.

This is most important.

And,certainly, dominant is music.

It was an Event in the Republic.

I was proud that the new orchestra was created.

I was very surprised

that young musicians so in unison, beautifully played.

We worked for 3-4 months

I remember this moment, we were playing Beethoven's "Coriolanus"

and I don't remember what happened

but we were playing without notes, by heart.

We wore the suits at the first show

the girls wore long skirts and all had to wear the same black shirts, scarves.

We made everything, measured waist, height, ordered shirts.

It was joy.

We created this band together with Sergey Smbatyan

and ten years have passed

and we did it, we won.

The Orchestra, in this short time became our pride

moving faster and faster

managed to do what others can't do during 30 years

I'm Armenian.

I'm Armenian.

I'm Armenian.

I'm Armenian.

I'm Armenian.

I'm Armenian.

I'm a hybrid.

All Armenians.

We played abroad and I was asked

do you have a lot of Armenians in the Orchestra?

And I realized that we are unique.

Try to make 100 Armenians play and think in unison

every Armenian is individual

respecting their individuality is necessary to unite them in one band

and just good music is not enough.

It means to join every musician's will.

All Armenians and what it means

probably more ardour, some smoothness, more brightness.

We all - Armenians all of the same age

all- graduates of the same Alma mater.

Without a basement no one can achieve anything.

Our basement is Armenia, our homeland

This is very important

THE ROOTS GOD

You probably know that in 301 AD the Armenians were the first in the world

to accept Christianity, 12 years before the Italians.

and in Armenian churches 15 centuries was cultivated

the culture of Church Liturgy.

Armenian's squeezed their prays out of stone

because stone for Armenia is not just building material for houses or do hachkars

It 's much more a symbol of relationship with outer world

Armenia joins Europe and Asia, lying between them

and joins cultural heritage of East and West, partly in symphony art.

Analyzing Armenian traditions the way they were transforming in Komitas art

we understand how modern this music is.

And the way it transforms

keeping high religious spirit

which always distinguished the Armenian spiritual life.

Komitas influenced Spendiarov - a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov.

Aram Khachaturian –a pupil of Myaskovsky from Moscow Conservatory.

These brilliant composers wrote a lot for the Armenian symphony music.

We have a wonderful galaxy

Mirzoyan, Alexander Harutyunyan, Lazar Saryan

Arno Babajanyan who Shostakovich admired, he was his pupil.

It is very important that it is played by young

with their force and their potential this culture should be passed.

In Soviet times when famous musicians came

they always visited Armenia too.

Music in Armenia is the most important thing

In Soviet times, when a new family bought a house

first things they bought was a table, chairs and piano.

Most children had to study music.

We have most music schools per capita in percent

That's why, notes for children are like the second alphabet.

MY WAY WORK

After God created the world there came the turn for Luck.

-Where will you go? God asked it.

-Tо the laziest and I will stay with him. was an answer

-How come? There are plenty of toilers, and you will go to the laziest?

Luck said: -A toiler will find me himself.

We do music since six we began to act

and the stage: becomes our second home.

We play together for four hours every day.

Sometime 2 rehearsals per day without days off.

We know each other's character. It helps.

We understand each other without words.

Playing the Tchaikovsky Concert already half way

I realized that it's o'k to play with them.

Because they react to any remark from the soloist.

I also made it clear that I love to play music

like improvisation and love some fresh ideas.

Serejik-that's how I keep calling him

he is the dearest person for me.

I remember him a baby.

It is good that he was a gifted violinist

because to lead the Orchestra

is important to play string instrument,

it s the core of the orchestra.

We liked each other from the second we met.

You know, the friendship between two conductors, it's not only unusual

it's almost impossible.

We are exception.

The conductor has an image

he's a dictator always dissatisfied.

It's all true.

A leader should be not just an excellent musician

he should be tough.

We can't say that he's a dictator

because he always listens to another opinion.

We've got leash and we've got jokes.

a little bit of everything.

He is a very good friend first of all and then he's a conductor.

Leader is not the one,

who creates some obstacles just to show he is tough.

Leader is the one who can direct you ideologically.

I understood what a great relationship they have

as the orchestra tries to do everything to make him happy

and how much energy Sergey is giving to them.

Young conductor grows professionally together with his instrument

And his instrument is his orchestra.

I'm not afraid of life its urging noise of fight

Gives to my mind its flame and its internal light

Just trouble, not a thought grows in deserted dark

The flowers feel so cold at night, in crystal ark

My idleness just makes the moments dispersed

When something does disturb my soul - what can be worse?

I tremble when you're all around, leave me in peace!

A match, to burn in wind, needs helping hand - like this

It's just a moment but... Don't touch me when it comes

That's time for me to grope my way to moons and suns

Just silently do catch my absent-minded look

Don't interrupt the noise around me when I'm hooked

That's fine. And let me stay unnoticed till tomorrow

Amidst the mist and maybe in creative sorrow.

I'm not afraid of life

I'm not afraid of life

I'm not afraid of life

I'm not afraid of life

The word "state" means Quality.

Three words: joy,commitment, professionalism.

That is the key to any success

Originality

temperament

and profound friendship which has appeared between musicians.

Probably passion

romance

and humor

3 components, you cant be on stage without them

We played in Berlin.

We played in Paris.

In Italy.

in Lebanon.

In Spain.

In China.

Touring is always a new impressions.

Yes, I like it but not too much.

No doubt, their touring abroad on very prestigious stages speak for itself

It's a good argument in cultural dialogue

And it really deserves a very serious recognition and respect.

Tradition?

I would say that there are a lot of families who met in the orchestra

I met my husband here in orchestra.

My wife works in the orchestra too.

I'm single.

No girls left.

Spouses orchestra of Armenia.

We're Family. It's true.

And I think that also influence the energy flow in orchestra.

We represent country, natioan - national music: Aram Khachaturian.

Probably the most famous Armenian after Noy.

Aram Khachaturian is Aram Khachaturian.

He replied: "You see, I've got Armenian blood".

With efforts of the Orchestra

Khachaturian's music is performed all the time, always, in any format.

Sergey Smbatyan plays pieces which is not often heard even in Yerevan.

All major life stages of orchestra are connected with the Aram.

That can't be otherwise.

He's already in our blood, I guess.

Aram Khachaturian is our pride.

We always have sold out

despite the fact that the Orchestra performs a lot.

Our partnership with the orchestra began six years ago.

We just believed in the success of this team

And we became their partners, and supported their creative activities

When the orchestra has had 10 years behind

they naturally developed new ambitions and new responsibilities.

Their music is very dynamic and it opens up for the future.

Silence was at the beginning

Complete

blind

comprehensive

It was covered with a coat of century's dust

Immovable

and unquestioning

But then

suddenly

from nowhere a sound

very distant, very weak and shrill.

It jumped off the walls in anxiety

shivered in the air

as if looking for something

tossed

and faded

sobbing

and again raised to the ceiling, trembling, quivering, praying.

It wanted to be heard.

Wanted for someone there high up to know:

It exists.

It looks for smth.

It will manage.

Only a narrow slit in the universe is needed.

Easy whiff of wind, which will slow the direction.

Just a thin ray of light, warming and opening the way to freedom.

And you know what?

It was heard.

The one who had been called so fervently

smiled

and with a slight nod of his head ordered to fulfill the wish.

And now began to turn the gears

mechanisms buzzed

And heavy step of Main Performer

echoed through the corridors of the Heavenly Office.

There were no questions, no doubts.

As his word is law.

That's how I was born.

I have a lot of faces, a lot of hands.

A lot of eyes are laughing.

Lots of hearts are beating.

Beloved sound.

I'm Whole.

One language, One culture.

I'm breathing with music.

I'm reviving with it.

The Universe echoes me with its voices.

And my soul is in my name.

THE VOICE OF ORCHESTRA

I wish the Orchestra their young enthusiasm,

their craving to everything new, wonderful,

would become the main target in their creative life.

Youth is daring, desire, future.

Let this spirit always be seen in this orchestra.

This Orchestra has a lot in future

They already have won many stages.

We wish them success and new achievements to reach new heights.

In the 10 years of its existence the Orchestra has already proved

they are not going to be lost in the ocean of symphonic music.

Let these yesterday's children share one life and one breath.

Let them always stay young, attractive, just as they are now.

I wish for my great-great-grandchildren to play in the orchestra.

Let them walk their glorious way, let them grow, and not rest on the laurels.

I wish them to grow as fast as they are growing now

and green light to brighten their way

and let them be met everywhere with warmth and gratitude.

Let them be in such cheerful mood.

And together we are going to achieve a lot

I wish that the only limit to their achievements, their goals and their results

will be only the sky.

Do you remember Chekhov: the main thing is not Gloss, not Glory.

More important is the ability to tolerate.

Learn to bear your cross and believe.

You remember what they are.

The shots mellow the seizures.

The pills keep them from happening.

How about you blow on them to make them safe?

Fuck off, Logan.

So you remember who I am now.

I always know who you are.

It's just sometimes I don't recognize you.

Take the pills.

You leave me alone with that fucking albino.

He doesn't listen to me.

I know a damn speciation when I see one.

A what?

Speciation. New mutant, a young one.

There are forces trying to kill them.

Forces? They want help.

Forces, forces.

It's too bad you're not in that business anymore.

They don't want me, they want you.

Oh, yes, that's how fucking stupid they are.

They're waiting for you at the Statue of Liberty.

The Statue of Liberty was a long time ago,

Charles, a long time.

There are no new mutants. Understand?

Hasn't been a new one born in 25 years. Not anywhere.

You always thought...

we were part of God's plan.

But maybe...

Maybe we were God's mistake.

What a disappointment you are.

When I found you...

you were pursuing a career as a cage fighter.

A warm capper to a life as an assassin.

Hooked on barbiturates.

You were an animal.

But we took you in.

I gave you a family.

And they're gone now.

Logan.

Logan...

What did you do?

What did you do?

Answer me! Why are we here?

No one should live like this.

Drugged in a fucking tank!

It's for your own good.

No, it's not!

You're waiting for me to die.

Bible Study | Observation: 5 Tips for Observation - Duration: 9:15.

In today's video, I'm going to give you five things to look for when observing a text.

[INTRO BUMP]

Hey, I'm Abe this is BIBLECRAFT, dedicated to helping you study think and

teach the Bible. In today's video we're looking at observation.

When reading the narrative sections of the Bible there are some things, some features some, well

they're just called "poetics" that help us understand what the author wants to tell us.

The biblical stories can kind of seem boring but they're not they've got so

much in there and the more I study the more I keep looking I go, "Man who would

have thought who would have put this in there?

That's incredible I cannot believe

this is there. If we think reading the biblical stories is boring man you're

just not reading them carefully enough cuz there is so much there so much than

that I haven't seen yet and I'm excited to begin to learn and they're starting

to see even more. The history of the Bible the setting of the Bible is a very

mysterious world that we don't know much about because we haven't lived in it.

We can learn more by studying it but we just we need to learn how to think how

they think and one of the ways we can do that is to understand the way they tell stories. These features of a story are called poetics Adele Berlin says that

"poetics is to literature what linguistics is to language"

These are found in the narrative sections particularly of the Hebrew Bible or the

Old Testament and these are coming from Bruce Waltke's and Old Testament

Theology. Some of these features that I picked up along reading his book.

Motif. This is a motif it comes from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (but, actually his Fifth).

It's a repeated pattern throughout a story or a piece of music.

These don't mean much on their own but as you begin to keep reading and reading

and reading you begin to see them repeated and as you look at the pattern

you begin to understand more meaning about what's going.

One motif is in the life of Joseph and Joseph he has several different features that keep

popping up so the idea of dreams keeps popping up in his life or prison or pits

and silver as well so in with dreams you've got he's got his own two

dreams when he's a young guy about 17 years old and then he gets thrown in

prison at some point and then he has to interpret the dreams of the cupbearer

and the baker and then he interprets the dreams of Pharaoh.

So dreams are kind of are mentioned throughout the whole text. As well as silver you know he's

sold for silver as a as a young boy to the Ishmaelites and he ends up giving

the silver back to his brothers as they come down to get food from Egypt and

then you've got Benjamin who has the silver goblet of Joseph in his back sack

as they go back home. Water is also a motif in the life of

Moses he's got the water that he's taken out of as a

baby he passes through the Red Sea he strikes the rock the water turns into

blood water is a major theme in the life of Moses. I'm not sure if motifs can span

books of the Bible but they seemed to span books of the Bible don't know if

they still can call him a motif. So for instance Egypt is a place that pops up

over and over again in the books of the Bible. So you've got in Genesis you've

got it several times you know you've got it Abraham going down to Egypt to get

because of the famine and then you have Joseph and his family bringing down to

go to Egypt but then you also have Joseph going down with his family as well.

And finally, you have the other Joseph this father of Jesus going down

to Egypt again and so that's also kind of a thing coming out of Egypt and going

down to Egypt and coming out with riches and treasures as well that's another

theme or what it's really called a motif that comes up over and over.

Number 2, a lead word a lead word or leitword is it's a German thing is a word that's

mentioned by the author that's mentioned over and over in a text so it's not a

motif which would be a feature of a story but a leat word or a lead word is

a feature of the author speaking and writing it over and over again.

So an example of this would be Isaac and this term or word game that's mentioned

often in the story of Isaac being deceived by Jacob to give him the

blessing the word "game" is mentioned about ten times and also the other word

is the other one that's mentioned too in that story is this word "delicious food".

And so when you read that story going over you'll see how many times these

words pop up and it's the delicious food that ended up tricking Isaac.

I will say this is actually extremely hard to find you have to keep looking

carefully like I said keep going back and looking you're a window shopper

you're just browsing around keep looking at what's going on here and that's how

you get to develop a sense of finding these features of the text.

The third feature is foreshadow or preparation in Genesis 25.28 the

author says "Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game but Rebekah loved Jacob."

That's the author telling you hey there's something about to happen

between these family and I'm telling you part of the feud before we get right

into it in. Genesis chapter 27 ends up telling this story of this feud between

Rebekah and Isaac and Esau and Jacob. Judges works this way Judges 2

you have this cycle where the people are doing right with their own eyes and then

God sends some people to take over them and capture them then they pray up to

God and God said someone to rescue them and the cycle continues that happens all

in Genesis are in Judges. Proverbs 1.10 tells us the sin is

seductive and then in v11-14 it shows us how sin is seductive and

then 15-18 it tells us the result of the seductiveness of sin.

So the 1.10 that's the generalization the overview before

getting to this specific. There's a special type

of foreshadow or preparation and that is called typology and typology I'll

probably spend a whole other video talking about but that's just how things

in the Old Testament are realized or fulfilled in the New Testament. A lot of

those have to do with Jesus himself but typology is another thing to keep

looking for and and focus on and think about a features of the text one of

these features is Mount Moriah. Mount Moriah is the mount in which Abraham

sacrifices Isaac or almost sacrifices Isaac on and then it becomes the exact

same place where the angel of the Lord stopped after David numbered the people

and that's where the temple is built and then that also becomes the place in

which Jesus himself has sacrificed he sacrificed near the temple outside the

walls there. And so that feature comes close as far as God relenting his wrath

at a certain place and then finally in Jesus it's fulfilled by God poured out

his wrath on Jesus there but I'll go into that a little bit later on in

another video that's a that's a huge concept in the Scripture.

The last one we'll look at is the refrain. A refrain is this repeated phrase at the end of

certain episodes in Scripture this refrain helps to break up a text so that

you can understand what the author's point is by these segmented breaks.

At the end of the book of Judges there's a phrase that was repeated sometimes

before a bad story or at the end of a bad story and it says "and there was no

king in Israel and everyone did what was right in their own eyes." Each of these

stories that are totally at the end of judges say the same thing there's moral bankruptcy

people are doing what's right in their own eyes and if telling you the same

story in several different stories. Another refrain is in the book of Acts

there is this phrase that keeps repeating over and over sometimes in

different ways and the Lord added to his church and the Lord added to his church.

That's the end of today's video hopefully that'll get you excited about studying your bible

Bible and looking a little bit closer about what's going on there.

When we read the Bible especially the narrative sections we have to recognize

that whoever wrote this they were expert at their craft they were good at what

they did and we can look for these little details that seem mundane and

silly but once you understand what the author was trying to say the impact man

it is beautiful. When we read the Old Testament narratives and then the New

Testament narratives we just understand we're not just reading stories about

history but stories that are written in such a way for us to learn from them and

so they give us clues here and there as far as what they're actually going to say.

If you liked this video, please like this video and in the comments maybe

even show if you found somewhere where it has a refrain or a motif or a lead

word that you found in the text where there's the Old Testament the New

Testament I love finding these and and talking about it it's real all really

interesting but thank you so much for watching this video

IT'S OVER: Senate Drops NUKE On Robert Mueller - Duration: 11:17.

IT'S OVER: Senate Drops NUKE On Robert Mueller

White House Special Counsel Robert Mueller just got some bad news when Sen. John Thune

(R-SD) said he does not think his probe into Donald Trump's alleged collusion with Russia

during the presidential election will end with a report to Congress detailing impeachable

offenses.

"The American people at some point are going to tire of this, and many of them have already

put it in their rearview mirrors," Thune said, according to Breitbart.

Thune was then asked directly if he thinks there will be an impeachment referral to Congress.

"I would highly doubt that would be the case.

I think it's in the president's best interest and the American people's best interest

that the facts and the truth get out there.

That the conclusions be reached.

They've investigated everything and interviewed everybody and have had months and months of

this now to do this and I think it's time for them to begin to start winding this down.

I hope that happens sooner rather than later, because I don't think it's in anybody's

best interest to drag these sorts of things out forever and for them to become an unending

sort of campaign."

This comes after Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani said that Mueller should follow the example

former FBI Director James Comey set in 2016, when he investigated and publicly exonerated

Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server.

"When Comey closed [the case] in July — although I think it was a complete whitewash — I'd

like to have them do that for us," the former New York City mayor said.

"Come on!

They've had a whole year," Giuliani said in a recent interview.

"We're going to raise the pressure to try to get this thing over with.

It's gone on long enough."

Giuliani scoffed at the idea that Mueller's investigation would last beyond the midterm

elections later this year.

"I think that'd be absurd," he said.

"If we're talking about the public having some degree of toleration for it now that'd

switch very quickly" if the investigation extended beyond this year.

What do you think about this?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Google Home v Amazon Echo : This vital feature is what these speakers desperately need ● News #TECH - Duration: 3:13.

THE Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers have taken the world by storm but a newly announced,

and hugely important, feature on both devices needs to arrive sooner rather than later.

There's no question that the Amazon Echo and Google Home smart speakers are two of

the best gadgets of the past year.

Both of these intelligent devices use the power of speech to search for music, answer

questions, plan your week, set timers and even turn on the lights.

It's clever stuff and, with neat designs plus very low prices, it's no wonder they've

become so appealing and hugely popular.

Google's Home Mini and the Amazon Echo Dot both currently cost under £50 - a bargain

price for such new and advanced technology.

However, for all of their greatness, there is one thing that still annoys us about these

voice-powered machines.

If you have children in your house you'll no doubt be teaching them the art of manners.

A please and thank you goes a long way but sadly kids and adults don't need manners

when speaking to the latest smart assistants.

It's something that many Echo and Google Home owners have been concerned about for

a while as it seems a little rude barking orders at a speaker without ending it with

a please or thanks.

One reader recently explained to Express.co.uk that it was this reason that he had banned

the Echo from his home as he felt it wasn't a positive role model for his family.

It seems Amazon and Google are aware of these concerns with both technology companies recently

announcing radical changes.

Amazon has revealed its latest Echo Dot Kids Edition which not only features online time

limits and improved parental controls but also something called the Magic Word.

The new Magic Word feature offers positive reinforcement when kids use the word "please"

while asking questions of Alexa.

And not to be left behind, Google also revealed something similar at its Google I/O event

earlier this month with its new "Pretty Please" mode.

This again brings positive responses if children say please when asking a question.

These are clearly welcome additions but it seems there will be a wait before your smart

speaker gets these polite new features.

The Echo Dot Kids Edition is currently only available in the US and Google hasn't yet

revealed a rollout of the "Pretty Please" function.

It's a big move in the right direction and let's hope it's not too long before Alexa

and Google Assistant praises all of us when we ask nicely.

Tale of a Persnickety English Fellow 🎙️ A Supernatural Short Story 🎙️ by Willem Myra - Duration: 20:32.

Tall Tale TV SciFi and Fantasy Short Story Audiobooks

Tale of a Persnickety English Fellow By Willem Myra

The first time it happens, he's eighteen.

His parents are out of town for a reason or another, so Joseph throws a party for himself

and his old companion, Loneliness.

He buys two slices of margherita from an Indian pizza place with the most affordable prices

in the city, and a 2-liter bottle of cheap wine from the minimarket at the end of the

street.

They have dinner in the kitchen.

Lights off, candles lit.

The TV set to white noise.

Neither says a word.

So peaceful.

Loneliness takes the form of a young girl -- sulked eyes with curly hair, small nose,

flat mouth; tee-shirt and jeans.

She's not very talkative, which is okay 'cause he's also not into words and all

that chatty stuff.

She's a teetotaler, so Joseph sponges up every last fizzy drop of wine all by himself.

But he's alright.

He doesn't even feel it, the damned alcohol swimming alongside his blood.

Afterwards, they watch the sunset from the balcony and Loneliness says that it's such

a beautiful mess.

That orangey ceiling with sporadic sheep-shaped purple spots.

They play UNO for the rest of the evening, and at 10 pm Loneliness says she's got to

go.

"You sure you don't wanna stay for the night?" he asks.

She's sure.

"I have to see a man about a dog.

Besides, you've got better stuff to do anyway," Loneliness says.

"Like what?"

Joseph asks.

"Like thinking about your miserable life."

She's right.

So as soon as she clears off, like fog on a winter morning when the sunrays finally

manage to hit the ground, Joseph goes to the bathroom and throws up into the bathtub.

The puke is copper-colored and smells like bleach.

Odd.

He rinses the bathtub and washes his face with ex's-heart-cold water.

Standing in front of the toilet, his pants and boxers around his ankles, and his right

hand on his junk, Joseph ponders about life.

Now that high school is coming to an end, his future seems bleaker than ever.

His parents' finances can't send him through university and his brains aren't enough

to earn him a scholarship.

Aesthetically he isn't pleasing either -- quite the opposite.

He's the abortion of Helena Bonham Carter and Joe Pesci.

Worse.

Of Buscemi and Michael Cera, if one of them went down the route of Schwarzenegger's

Junior.

So once he's done with school, Joseph's destiny will probably tie up with that of

some fast food or store or restaurant in need of someone to sweep the floors and clean the

piss off the walls.

"So why bother?" asks Loneliness, sighed into existence by Joseph himself.

"There's the window.

Why don't you take a leap?"

And Joseph is tempted, he really is.

Then the wine hits the target.

Intoxicated as he is, Joseph starts shouting gibberish at the walls of the flat and amidst

all the nonsense his mouth is puking out, there it is, the cry, clear and to the point,

for Satan to come and take his pathetic soul in exchange for a small, harmless request.

But Satan doesn't show up.

§

The second time it happens, he's twenty-six.

He's a man now.

For the past four years, Joseph's been waiting tables for a family-owned Chinese restaurant

at a 10-minute-walk from home.

The pay is not as bad as it sounds and besides, they let him take home all the leftovers he

wants.

When he's not working, Joseph runs.

Ever since he moved on his own, he's become obsessed with endurance sports.

Long-distance running, marathons, cross country running, and, hell, sometimes even small-town

amateurs-only road bicycle racing.

He even has a girlfriend cheering on him.

Her name is Chiara and she's a grad student.

Biology is her passion.

She's shorter than 5-foot-2, always polite with everybody, and on Sunday mornings she

bakes him apple pies and exotic cakes with slices of mango in them.

It's a lovely relationship the one they're in.

But the family-owned Chinese restaurant has been avoiding tax for a couple years now.

One morning the MH Revenue & Customs shows up with the bobbies.

They close down the place, take away the paterfamilias in cuffs.

Joseph's unemployed again.

Shit.

Then there's the running issue.

His hometown is renowned for the marathons it organizes every other month.

The winner gets to become the sovereign to one of those 300-inhabitant (that's the

maximum capacity at the moment) parallel universes CERN scientists are building on a weekly basis.

So, of course, the marathons attract people from all around the world, with the consequence

that Joseph never gets anywhere near the top three podium.

Double shit.

As if all this wasn't enough, the things between him and Chiara get tricky.

On his third week home, she asks him to take her out on a date.

He's penniless, he says.

The money he's saved will be needed to pay the rent.

She throws a fit.

"You're always too busy doing this or that to take care of me," she shouts clutching

her fists.

"Always too knackered.

Too old inside."

She packs her stuff and leaves.

Triple shit.

Joseph doesn't even try to stop her.

He lies down on the bed and lets Loneliness caress his hair.

She's getting all wrinkly and cynical too.

"Go on," she says.

"Call out for the horned bloke.

See if he can help ya." Joseph gets up.

Stares into the mirror.

His voice low and his back hunched, he begs for a trade.

The Guy Who Runs Hell doesn't even bother to show up to tell him away.

§

The third time Joseph barely whispers it.

He's thirty-four.

And he's a dustman, which is a fancy way to say he cleans shit off the streets.

Kids see him every morning on their way to school and they point at him and call him

names.

Joseph -- he doesn't flinch.

"Whatever," he says and keeps to his work.

He's given up on everything.

Three springs back he went to a high school reunion, had some fun with a couple of old

classmates and decided to keep in touch.

A week later they had this nighttime soccer game against the neighboring city.

Well, wouldn't you know it, Joseph had the ball, ready to score their first goal when

a chav from the opposite team came in too strong and broke his leg.

Now Joseph doesn't run anymore.

"Your left ankle," said the doctor, "cannot sustain the kind of effort required during

a marathon like the ones this city organizes.

Besides, you look like a pretty lame lad.

You'd never win.

Give up already, why won't you?"

The exorbitant rent forced him to get a flatmate, an Irish bloke who barely acknowledges him.

Joseph is alone.

Ever since Chiara left him, onanism has become his philosophy of life.

Even Loneliness stopped coming by.

Now, after a long day at work, Joseph jumps in the shower and hums some pop song trying

to get himself in a good mood.

A spit of sun-core-hot water hits him on a shoulder; he stumbles back, leans on the wrong

leg -- the wrong ankle -- and the pain embraces him in no time.

Joseph turns off the water.

Sits on the floor.

He curses himself.

He curses everything -- people, society, life.

Then, whispering to the glass walls, the only ones still left to listen to him, Joseph says,

"Bollocks."

Says, "I've spent my whole life craving things I cannot obtain on my own."

Says, "Things I will never obtain anyway.

For there's no-one.

Not Above.

Not Below.

It's all lies.

It's all lies…"

His little speech doesn't end that already Joseph's overwhelmed by a smell of barbeque.

He lifts his head and eyes, screened by the shower fog, a humanoid shape.

Short, pristine white horns.

Maroon skin cracked like an arid terrain.

Hairy legs coupled with equine genitalia.

Unkempt fingernails, dry lips, wayward eyes.

"Why now?"

"Excuse me?" says Satan.

His voice is polite and silk-soft.

He should host a podcast, Joseph thinks.

"I've been trying to summon you for donkey's years.

Why do you only show up now?"

Satan shrugs.

"You were mad at the world, at first.

Then disappointed with it.

Now you're just desperate, so it's easier for me to trick you.

Not that I need to.

You know, whole Johnny and the fiddle-playing contest.

Rings a bell?

I done told you, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been.

No?

Well, anyway.

I was getting bored, the ISIS blokes are no fun, so here I am."

They get out of the shower.

Satan hands Joseph a towel to cover himself.

Satan covers his genitals as well, with tighty whiteys appeared out of nowhere.

The two of them, devil and man alike, sit at the table in the kitchen.

Joseph's flatmate is out doing some errands so they can talk undisturbed.

"Please, have a go at trying to trick me.

See if you can do better than the billion fools who stood in that same chair before

you and made the same know-it-all face."

Joseph has had almost twenty years to think about it.

He imagined all the low-blows, loopholes, and possible scams Satan could try to pull

off.

He needs to be cautious.

To only speak what he really means.

"I want a notebook.

Sixty, seventy pages long.

Black covers -- no titles, no drawings, no nothing.

I will be the only one able to open it, to write in it, hell, even to see it.

And I'll know, every second of every day, where the notebook is.

I will have like a sort of map in my mind, with its location beeping up on it.

Kinda like the dragon ball radar, you follow me?"

"Yeah, I can do that."

"I'm not done.

The notebook's gonna be indestructible."

"I can do that as well."

"And it will have one peculiar quirk.

It shall turn words into reality.

Whatever I write on it -- poof! -- it's going to become real, tangible.

Truth from ink."

Satan seems to think it over.

"I can't do that.

I mean, I can but I won't.

How about I give one single page?"

"A3-sized."

"A5."

"Super small squares though."

"Rules.

Twenty for each side."

"Deal."

"Fifteen for each side."

"Hey, I said deal."

"You were too slow."

Satan shows him his cowish night-blue tongue.

"Fine, fifteen.

We have a deal, now?"

"We have a deal," says Satan and presents Joseph his swine hand.

Joseph doesn't shake it.

"I'm not done."

"Oh, so it's your turn to act childish.

I see.

Well, go ahead.

What else does your rotten heart desire?"

"I want to see it black-on-white."

Satan claps, once, and a contract appears on the table in front of Joseph.

Joseph reads it in one go, looking for hidden clauses.

"Happy now?"

"Not yet.

I also want insurance.

I want it on record that any clause, loophole, and anything else hidden on or in the paper

that I am not consciously consenting to, will terminate our agreement without ifs or buts.

Also, if you try to trick me, again the agreement will go tits up and as a compensation I will

keep both my soul and the piece of paper agreed upon."

"Anything else?"

barks Satan.

"Neither you nor your pawns or goons or slaves or whatever you call them, nor anybody

else -- living being or damned soul -- influenced directly or indirectly by your power, should

be able to come after me.

I shall not be hurt, intimidated, or killed before my long-before-birth-decided fate will

be fulfilled."

"Long-before-birth-decided fate," says Satan, allowing himself a short giggle.

"Nice one."

"I'm serious."

"So am I." Joseph keeps staring mutely and eventually,

Satan gives in.

Smoke comes out of his bull nostrils.

He claps once more and Joseph's new requests are added to the contract, the ink still fresh.

"Good?"

"Good," Joseph says.

"Then let's shake."

"Not so fast.

Come back tomorrow.

I want the night to think about it.

I'd rather not screw myself for the rest of the eternity."

Satan sighs.

He folds himself like an origami and disappears into thin air.

§

Twenty-four hours later, there he is, on that same chair on that same side of the table.

"Good morning," says Joseph smiling.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever."

"I am ready to sign this contract," Joseph points at it, "and this contract alone."

"As long as you piss off."

So they sign, and everything's cool.

Satan takes the contract and goes back to Hell with the promise that he will get Joseph's

soul once he dies, while Joseph is left behind with his new magic piece of paper.

Joseph's future literally rests in the palm of his hands.

"At last," he comments aloud.

§

Having been an unpleasable perfectionist since adolescence, Joseph has had enough time to

decide on what to write on the paper.

Here's what his pondering has boiled down to:

He will make himself ten years younger and will lose at least twice as many pounds.

He will be hairless from the neck down.

His body will look like that of a guy who hits the gym at least three times a week -- no

need exaggerating, he doesn't want to be Dwayne Johnson big.

His penis will be straight, not curved, and will gain one inch in length, half in girth

-- again, no need exaggerating.

His immune system will be always vigil so he won't catch any virus, won't develop

any disease, won't be affected by any mental or behavioral disorder.

He will obtain perfect eyesight, hearing, and reflexes.

He will never lose hair, which will never grow past a certain point and will be constantly

well-groomed, be it head or facial hair.

Same with his nails.

His jawline will be more defined and muscular and masculine.

His nose slightly smaller.

He won't sweat or stink.

His teeth will be perfectly healthy and aligned, they will shine a blinding white and will

never ache for the rest of his life.

He will grow taller that 6-feet-2 in one night's course.

He will be able to fluently speak any human language ever invented, discovered, or merely

thought of.

He will-- He will--

But Joseph doesn't manage to write down one single word, for black clouds gather around

his room and before he can notice it, lightning pierces his body, head to toe.

Joseph falls to the ground unconscious.

His flatmate will find him half an hour from now.

By then, he will already be on his way to Hell.

§

Elsewhere.

Around the same time.

Two man-resembling beings sit on a boat floating at the center of a pond.

They are fishing for blackbody-devouring beasts.

One of them is relatively young, the other objectively old.

One of them has blond hair, the other a salt-and-pepper beard.

"Would you believe it, Gabriele?" says God.

"To secure a deal like that and not pay me any thought whatsoever?

Mankind -- such naivety."
