Youtube daily report May 21 2018

[♪ INTRO ]

Here's a question for you: What's something you're afraid of?

The first answer that comes to mind might be your typical boggart stuff.

Like, small children in horror movies,

taking a test in a class that you haven't been to all semester, that kind of thing.

But what about when you used to leap into bed so the monsters couldn't nip at your toes?

Or that time your flight was so bumpy you thought it was all over?

Or, maybe worst of all, when you took off your cap and gown and wondered what was next?

Sorry, that just got real.

Most of us experience these common fears — of the dark, of death, or of the future — at

some point in our lives.

And according to psychologists, there could be a reason for that.

Some researchers have argued that there might be one fundamental fear underlying all of these things.

One you can trace all of your worries to: the fear of the unknown.

So when Albus Dumbledore said, "It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and

darkness, nothing more" — he might've actually been right.

Jo Rowling strikes again.

Psychologists — maybe unsurprisingly — have been trying to understand fear for a long time.

It was obvious early on that people have individual differences that make them more or less likely

to feel afraid and anxious.

But what was less clear was why some fears are more common than others.

One idea was that certain stimuli might be quote-unquote "biologically prepared"

to provoke fear, which was basically a fancy way of saying that being afraid of some stuff

is innate because it helps keep us alive.

In theory, this could explain why so many of us are afraid of things like spiders and snakes.

The problem, though, is that most spiders aren't really that dangerous.

Generally speaking, they're not as nearly as dangerous as, say, mushrooms.

But most of us don't find mushrooms especially terrifying.

Another problem is that research shows that most six-month-old infants aren't afraid

of things like snakes, which seems to suggest that we learn to fear them later.

Four-months-olds, however, do generally show fear in response to unfamiliar stimuli.

And evolutionarily speaking, the unknown makes a lot more sense as a universal, innate thing

to be afraid of.

If you've never encountered something before, you don't know how to deal with it… which

means a little caution might be in order.

The idea of this kind of broad, fundamental fear — rather than innate fears to specific

stimuli — was proposed by a clinical psychologist in 1991.

He suggested a few criteria for this base fear: It had to be of something inherently

unpleasant, it had to be distinct from other fundamental fears, and it had to explain other

common things we're afraid of.

He believed there were three of them: the fears of anxiety, of physical injury, and

of negative evaluation.

And there was some support for this idea.

Like, a 1993 study that surveyed 100 subjects found that the common fears people reported,

like being terrified of heights, were well explained by these fundamental fears.

And the categories also seemed to be distinct from each other.

But more recently, psychologists have started to argue that additional criteria are necessary

to define a fundamental fear.

In addition to the stuff we've already mentioned, these researchers suggest that they should

also be distributed evenly throughout the population and be supported by an evolutionary explanation.

It also shouldn't be possible to reduce them to anything more fundamental.

This means that the fears of anxiety, physical injury, and negative evaluation might not

pass the test.

For one, not everybody has them — like, plenty of people, from thrill seekers to deadline

junkies, actually seek out anxiety.

The bigger problem, though, is that all of these can be reduced or attributed to other

fears… one of which is the fear of the unknown.

And this fear does meet all the criteria.

As the researchers writing about it point out, it very well could be the one fear to

rule them all.

In case you were wondering: Yes.

The Tolkien reference is deliberate and heavy-handed in the paper, too.

Because sometimes, scientists are a bunch of dorks.

Of course, fear of the unknown isn't an easy thing to validate in the lab.

But there are plenty of studies to suggest that we prefer familiarity and the sure thing,

and that they can have a pretty wild effect on our behavior.

Research shows that we're more likely to visit a travel destination that we've been

to before, and we're more likely to attend a baseball game if we feel confident that

our team will win.

And, although no one wants to be zapped, knowing when electrical shocks are coming even makes

the experience less stressful and anxiety-provoking than not knowing.

There's also clinical evidence to suggest that the fear of the unknown really gets to us.

If you're uncomfortable with uncertainty, studies have shown, you're likely to have

more fear and anxiety.

And those with certain disorders — anything from panic and social anxiety disorders to

OCD and depression — seem to be especially affected by this fear.

While it does seem like there's something there, it's hard to say for sure whether

fundamental fears exist, let alone whether the fear of the unknown is the base human fear.

If it is, though, it would be a pretty satisfying answer to a lot of questions we have about

ourselves, big and small.

It could help explain why horror movies stop being as scary once you've seen the monster,

or why there's literally nothing worse than waiting to find out what someone thinks or

whether you got that job.

For now, though, we've just got to deal with the fact that there's still a lot of,

well, unknowns when it comes to our fear of the unknown.

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow Psych!

why scientists think we're specifically afraid of the dark.

KSP KrakenDrive - Duration: 8:05.

i'm pressing Action Group 1 to turn on the KrakenDrive

Varying the Authority limiter changes the krakendrive's thrust.

The drive transitions between hover mode and thrust mode, it's a bit unpredictable in this state.

by changing the slider, i control the amount of thrust generated - only what's needed to keep it around 300 m/s of speed. (the drag prevents me from going faster than that anyway)

Above 10000m, the G forces from the KrakenDrive start to increase, as atmospheric density decreases.

Toggling of the KrakenDrive with Action Group 1. It redocks automatically

Circularisation in low thrust mode, toggling off the KrakenDrive is nearly instantaneous.

the same KrakenDrive can also perform high G thrusts, just an Authority slide modification away.

Though, trying to actuate the drive at near 0m/s orbital speed can be damaging !

Also, of course, as I said, Captain Jack, the first time we're going to see -- not first

time but the first time very obviously Russell Davies wanted young gay men to see themselves

on television as normal people.

So you're going to have Captain Jack in male relationships and gay relationships and it

was just so incredibly cool to see and he's o incredibly sex.

This is a lovely episode where we find out that Captain Jack stole his name from a real

soldier in World War II and when they go back in time and they visit that guy it turns out

to be the night before he's going to die and our Captain Jack knows it but the real man

doesn't know it and they have a dance before he dies.

You're like "Oh my G--, I'm going to cry" it was so so good.

So well done and then later he had an affair with one of the gentlemen who worked at Torchwood

named Ianto and there's a whole thing in England.

There's a whole shrine to Ianto.

Very popular character.

Whose house? Stephen Curry's (expletive) house - Duration: 5:22.

Whose house? Stephen Curry's (expletive) house

— It was a moment, to be frozen in time, chilling to witness and stunning to fully understand when it burst upon an unsuspecting audience with gale force.

A sequence of dribbling, a drive to the hoop followed by a delicate finger roll for a bucket and then, boom:. Steph Curry screamed a bad word.

The religious family man with the innocent face and made-for-Disney image reached deep into his Forbidden Dictionary and found something naughty.

Was this a first for him in public view? After a quick first-step left Trevor Ariza choking on exhaust and when he finished at the rim in the third quarter, Curry had an out of body experience and temporarily exhumed himself from Game 3.

While the action moved up-court, he turned and faced the Oracle Arena crowd — now standing and pulsating and pleading for more, more, more! — and removed his trusty mouthpiece, pointed both index fingers to the ground and bellowed, with attitude:.

"This is my freaking house!". Only he substituted another, ahem, adjective for "freaking.

He acknowledged afterward, regrettably: "I know, I know. This was his house, his fans, his game, his turnaround performance of the playoffs and who knows, this could end up being his series as a result.

Normally the most vivid expression anyone gets from Curry after a made basket is a playful shimmy shake, which happened on the previous possession, when he isolated on James Harden and splashed a 30-footer.

Yes, that shot was satisfying and worth a wiggle. But Curry was feeling it. And he hadn't felt it for some time, since before the playoffs, since before the knee injury that kept him out for six weeks left him rusty.

So there was emotional release coming that was cutting edge for him.

This cursing was the sound of relief, from the frustration of all that, a two-time MVP hailed as the finest shooter of our generation suddenly bricking shots from 3 -point range in the Western Conference finals and becoming A Rather Big Topic here against the Rockets.

And so … maybe forgiveness for the potty mouth is in order?. Here's why: Curry was three-for-20 beyond the 3-point stripe in the first two-and-a-half games against Houston, but the script flipped suddenly and sharply in Sundays third quarter.

He found himself, his stroke, his place in the pecking order, and he kept rolling with it. He hit layups, mid-range jumpers and yes, 3s, and they all came in a rush, a flood that engulfed the Rockets.

"We've seen this so many times with Steph," coach Steve Kerr said. "All it takes is one. He bounces back from bad games as well as anyone I've ever seen. I was never concerned.".

He finished with 35 points, including 26 in the second half and the Warriors romped by 41. They're up 2-1 now, with another home game coming Tuesday.

The Warriors have won their last 16 home playoff games, an NBA record. They also just held the high-wire Rockets to 85 points, a low for Houston in these playoffs.

They've taken two of the three games easily, and in the one they didn't, Curry wasn't whole.

Well, he seems to be now, and what will that say for the Rockets and the rest of this much-anticipated series that could go flatter than Nebraska?.

The Warriors had a strong hunch that Curry's shooting problems were only a phase, and if so, that was Houston's biggest worry. Until Game 3, the Warriors had plenty of Kevin Durant but not much of anything else.

And there was another Curry-fueled issue: The Rockets were purposely running switches that would put him on Harden, the matchup Houston wanted to see and exploit.

The Rockets opened the game by constantly pulling these stunts and getting baskets. Kerr called timeout after one switch, where Harden left Curry on an island, and spoke with his player before the huddle.

The Warriors made amends for that by having Curry fight through the screens and staying on his man. Yet another problem persisted: Curry missed six of his seven 3-pointers in the first half.

"I had the right intentions," he said. "I had five wide open 3s and only one went in. I knew I had to keep searching and find some openings.".

So he kept shooting, no matter the circumstances. It was akin to a camper in the woods furiously trying to light an inferno by rubbing a pair of twigs together.

The smoke appeared, then the flame, and the ball finally felt familiar to Curry once again. "I always say you should never lose confidence," he said.

He turned to a common formula that shooters use to find their touch: Go for layups and then short jumpers to regain confidence and keep the defense honest. Then, let it fly from deep.

"You can't be that great of a scorer without mental toughness," Draymond Green said, "because you're always going to face obstacles when it comes to shooting. He always has that `next shot' mentality.

That's something thats been the key to his career, his mental toughness. He wouldn't be who he is today.".

What was particularly pleasing for Curry was returning serve to Harden. After repeatedly being victimized by the Rockets' leading scorer on the other end of the floor, Curry suddenly chopped up Harden.

He was isolated on Harden, an average defender at best, and the results were predictable. Curry made 10 of 12 shots in the second half and his 26 points came in only 16 minutes.

From that point, it was routine for Curry once again: The shooting, the flow of the game and the energy from the crowd. The fans simply wouldn't let him drift back into that other world.

Everyone had a hunch that it was only a matter of time for Curry, but still.

And what does one do when normalcy makes a refreshing return? He breathes easily and lives freely, with emotion, with a snow angel on the court once he landed after a made basket, and of course, the curse word heard 'round the arena (and among lip readers around the world).

To that, he shrugs. "A lot of it was just talking to myself," he said. "Youve got to be your biggest fan sometimes.

You've got to find whatever to get yourself going. I mean obviously it felt good and you want to use that energy to show your teammates that you are here, you're with them, and get the crowd into it.

"You come into transition and you find an open look and there's a collective hush in the crowd, especially in this building. It's a cool moment.".

Meghan Markle's Suits hubby Patrick J Adams to walk her down the aisle? - Duration: 4:14.

Meghan Markle's Suits hubby Patrick J Adams to walk her down the aisle?

Meghan Markle, 36, is set to marry Prince Harry tomorrow at a lavish ceremony in St Georges Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

It still remains unknown as to who will walk the actress down the aisle at this weekends Royal wedding, following the fiasco of her dad Thomas Markle pulling out due to bad health.

But it looks like her Suits co-stars could fill his spot on the big day.

Bookies Betfair are tipping Megs on-screen husband Patrick J Adams, who played Mike Ross in Suits, to give her away at 66/1.

The 36-year-old Canadian only just got hitched to Meghans character Rachel Zane in the US Netflix series last month in their final scenes together.

In the legal drama, the duo tied the knot in a heartwarming ceremony before taking up an offer to run a law firm together in Seattle, making way for their joint exits.

Their happily ever after followed their botched wedding back in series five.

Fellow co-star Gabriel Macht, who plays heartbreaker Harvey Spector, is also on the list to accompany Megs at 66/1.

The 46-year-old hunk touched down in London earlier this week according to his latest Instagram post, which showed him exploring Hyde Park with his wife Jacinda Barrett.

Betfair are also tipping her brother Thomas Junior at 150/1, Kate Middleton at 200/1, and President of the United States Donald Trump at 500/1.

"Weve seen a flurry of bets overnight and this morning for Prince Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle" Betfair spokesperson Hot favourite for the job is Prince Charles at 1/3, followed by Megss mum Doria Ragland.

Betfair Spokesperson Katie Baylis said: Weve seen a flurry of bets overnight and this morning for Prince Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle and his odds have been slashed from 10/1 last night to odds-on favourite at 1/3 this morning to give her away.

Meghans mum Doria Ragland has gone from the 2/5 favourite, to odds of 2/1 behind Charles. It was believed that Meghans dad Thomas would be walking his daughter down the aisle tomorrow, however major surgery for a sudden heart attack meant he couldnt fly over.

She released the devastating news in a statement yesterday morning, which read: Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding.

I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.

I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support.

Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday..
