Unit 4 The Canal Story

The building of the Blackstone Canal opened the valley to greater development

Growing Interest

Horses and Wagons were no longer effective in transporting materials between the mills

In 1792, Providence Merchants filed incorporation papers

with the Rhode Island General Assembly to build

a canal from Providence to Worcester

The idea was abandoned until the beginning of the building of the Erie Canal in 1825

Construction

Work on the Canal began in 1825

but wasn't completed until 1828

The canal was primarily built by

Irish immigrants and was built

with 48 stone locks

A boat on the canal could transport 35 wagon loads at one time

Expansion

The Canal allowed cities to expand due to

the new access to transportation

and access to seaports

Cities like Millbury and Grafton expanded

due to these new shipping sources

Financial Hardship

Mill owners filed lawsuits against the canal company

over the diversion of the water used to make the Canal

Navigation was often disrupted due to

the floods, droughts, and freezing

Despite this, the canal remained operational for 20 years

before it became obsolete in 1848 due to railroads.

Railroad construction along the river

also affected canal transportation and was a factor in its closing

The Impact Today

Although the Canal hasn't been used to transport goods

since 1848 its legacy remains evident today.

The Blackstone River Bikeway stretches along

the river and provides public grounds for people to

hike, bike, and walk

Also, there are many museums open such as

the Kelly House where people can learn about

the historical canal that caused the emergence of

so many cities
