Fmr Pres. Lee Myung-bak denies corruption charges at trial's first hearing - Duration: 2:09.
Yet another former South Korean leader was in the dock on criminal charges on Wednesday.
This time is was ex-president Lee Myung-bak,... who faces over a dozen charges, including
embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power.
Oh Soo-young reports.
Former President Lee Myung-bak rejected the corruption charges against him at his trial's
first hearing Wednesday.
Lee testified for 12 minutes at the Seoul Central District Court, where the hearing
began at 2 p.m. Four of his attorneys and eight members of
the prosecution were there to explain to the court how they will make their cases.
The former leader has been indicted on a total of 16 charges.
These include taking almost eleven million U.S. dollars in bribes -- 650-thousand dollars
from the country's intelligence agency,... and six-point-three million from Samsung Electronics
through auto parts company DAS,... which he's widely suspected of secretly owning.
Prosecutors also say the former leader embezzled some 32 million dollars mostly through DAS
to fund political campaigns and his household expenses.
The 76-year-old on Wednesday denied having or receiving illicit funds, as well as his
alleged links to DAS.
The former conservative leader also dismissed allegations that he granted Samsung Chairmain
Lee Kun-hee a special pardon from prison, in return for the millions in kickbacks.
The ex-leader has insisted that the ongoing probe targeting him and his associates is
an act of political retaliation by the current liberal government.
However, experts say Lee's all-out denial is unlikely to affect the course of the trial,
especially as prosecutors have said they secured incriminating evidence.
"One of the most important points will be revealing the ownership of DAS.
Regardless of his denial, prosecutors would present comprehensive evidence regarding the
flow of money and employees at the firm."
Other charges against former President Lee include abuse-of-power, tax evasion, and violating
laws on presidential records.
His attendance in court marked his first public appearance in 62 days,... after he was arrested
due to the risk that he might destroy evidence.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he is "very hopeful" that the upcoming nuclear
summit with North Korea will take place as planned next month,... though he did lay the
meeting's fate squarely on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un twice
- once in April as the CIA director and earlier this month,... as Secretary of State,... when
he brought back three U.S. detainees held by the regime.
But one thing's for sure for Pompeo: "a bad deal is not an option".
In his opening remarks at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday,...
Pompeo reaffirmed that the American people are counting on the Trump administration to
get it right,... and if the right deal is not on the table,... they will walk away.
With America's top diplomat saying the U.S. is still working toward holding the historic
summit with Kim Jong-un on June 12th in Singapore,... he called the denuclearization of North Korea
the Trump administration's "top national security priority",... adding the maximum pressure
campaign of diplomatic and economic sanctions is bearing fruit.
So how did North Korean leader Kim Jong-un appear when he met with Pompeo in Pyongyang?
According to Pompeo himself,... Kim seemed genuine and engaged in 'real conversations',...
adding hopes are high that when he meets President Trump,... he's willing to pursue a strategic
shift.
Pompeo also said the North Korean leader "wanted security assurances from the world, the end
of the status that sits between South and North Korea,... with the eventual goal of
a peace treaty."
While a security assurance remains intact,... the U.S. Secretary of State insisted that
zero concessions have been made to Kim to date,... and the administration has no intention
of providing any until a deal is sealed that are happy with.
The big question remains: Will there be a summit between the leaders of North Korea
and the U.S.?
The world hopes that in the end, the right deal is made to establish lasting peace on
the Korean Peninsula.

Guys, I'm very excited because today is the April 28th
The day that I've been waiting for so long
even before I got here in the U.S I was waiting for this day, which is PROM day
a lot of people, I mean, at least me, always had the curiosity
of knowing how is a american prom
because is that thing you know, that we always watch in the movies and stuff
and I always thought that it was very cool and everything.
I don't think it's way too different
the difference is that we are with american people
and they do all that prom king and queen
but anyways I'm very excited and even more excited to share all of this with y'all
so if you are interested about seeing this whole prom day
we're gonna take pictures, get our make up done
hair and stuff
and if you are also interested to see our prom dresses, and I'm not gonna lie, they are very cute

and now we're dropping off my sister at her friend's house

while I was taking pictures at the church
my crush was there
but anyway, it's being fun taking pictures and everything
and we had to go inside of the store
to fix this thing
because it was falling off
this is called corsage
everybody wear it for prom
it was loose so we fixed it
and I had to go inside with this dress on
it was very funny, but anyway
yeah, that's it
guys we just took our pictures and now we're going to eat
so we are here now
I barely ate
but it's ok
guys, we're leaving now, as soon as I got here I took my shoes off, and yeah everything was really fun
and some people are looking at me while I video this but I don't care
look at my hair, looks great (i was kidding)

it started at 8 and we got there at 8:20 (?) and we left at 11:10 prom was over at 11:30
and we went to my friend's house
we hung out, talked
for a while, having fun
and then we went to bed was like 4 am
everything was really cool
I tried to record as much as I could for y'all
so then y'all could see a little bit of this great experience
and seriously, it was very good
I loved it and I hope y'all enjoyed
