Aww man, it's gonna rain! How to go home sia?!
Hey, what's up guys!
It's Shafiah from Motorist.sg and I'm about to go home right now and it looks like it's
about rain heavily.
I came across one article about driving in wet weather conditions,
so todayyyy I'm gonna share with you guys some tips
about driving in wet weather conditions!
Okay first of all you gotta check your wipers before driving off.
This is important because if you cannot see the road, it's kinda impossible to drive right?
Ensure the wiper swipes the windshield smoothly and that there's no vibration when the wiper
swipes against the glass.
The wiper blades will vibrate when the windshield is dry because they're not moist enough.
So it's important to keep your windshield washer fluid full and ready.
If there's other weird sounds, it might also mean that the wiper blades are worn out
and they're losing their flexibility.
OR that are not mounted properly, so check if they need any adjustments or repair.
And make sure that all of them work well, because it's important to maintain a clear view
of the road especially when it's raining heavily.
So to ensure optimal performance, it's best to replace your wipers every 6 to 12 months.
And secondly, before you move off, remember to also check your tyres.
The tyres should be properly inflated to maximise performance.
And the tread should not be worn to prevent slipping.
When tyres are worn, the wet braking performance will worsen over time.
And last but not least, it's always best to check the weather condition before you
move off.
So if you know it's raining or it's gonna rain, plan for an alternative route just in
case that the route you're going to, is experiencing flash floods or is raining heavily.
Avoid puddles and flooded areas because you won't know how deep is the puddle and it's
difficult to gauge the depth of the flood.
When the roads are wet, road surfaces are slippery and tyre grip is reduced.
So avoid tailgating and maintain a safe gap between your car and the vehicle in front
of you, to allow at least double the braking distance and to give yourself some time and
space to slow down and stop.
And don't step on the brakes too hard or brake during a turn because the wheels will
lock and cause your car to skid.
Just apply a firm, steady pressure to the brakes and steer the car in the direction
of the skid.
Meaning if you're sliding to the left, then gently turn the steering wheel to the left
to cancel out the skid.
The car will then correct itself and go straight.
And to decrease the chances of skidding and accidents, slow down by 8-16km/h.
Because if you go too fast, your car can also lose contact with the road surface, causing
you to drive on a layer of water.
Which is also called hydroplaning.
Also don't drive too near cars that are diagonally in front of you, as the water may splash onto
your windscreen, causing a temporary loss of vision.
Water can cause severe damage to the engine or electrical system.
Once it interferes with the exhaust system or seeps into the passenger cabin, water will
be inside the engine compartment, and most regular vehicles risk extensive damage if
water is sucked into the engine.
Even if your car's exhaust is high enough, you still need to drive slowly through flooded
areas so that water will not get splashed into the exhaust.
Also when it's raining, remember to turn on the headlights to improve your visibility, and also to make
you more visible to others.
And turn off your cruise control to be able to control your speed and react to road conditions.
I've finally reached my destination safely.
Driving in the rain can be terrifying if you don't know what to do when faced with flash
floods and skidding.
So always remember to practice defensive driving especially when driving in wet weather conditions.
