You might have come across articles like How to Make Friends Using Your Reptilian Brain

or Overcome Your Reptile Brain to Lose Weight.

And if they seemed to make a lot of sense…

Well, I'm sorry to be a spoilsport,

but the idea that humans have a primitive reptile brain deep down there somewhere is largely false.

It is based on a tiny bit of truth, though, which might explain why it's stuck around for half a century.

This 'reptile brain' nonsense started in the sixties when neuroscientist Paul MacLean proposed the Triune Brain Theory.

He was trying to explain how animal brains evolved and

why some animals, like us, could reason or plan but others couldn't.

MacLean thought that these more complex abilities came from extra brain layers added on top of a primitive, instinctive brain base,

like a juicy dumpling is wrapped inside a pastry.

The brain's core was called the protoreptilian complex.

Hence, "reptile brain".

And it's the name MacLean gave to what we now call the basal ganglia,

a group of neurons at the very centre of the brain.

As the name suggests, this region supposedly explained the behavior of reptiles.

MacLean thought it was the neural seat of motor control

as well as instinctual behaviors like defending territory.

Wrapped around the reptile brain was the paleomammalian complex or limbic system,

which was largely in charge of emotions.

And because emotions are important for things like social relationships, parental care, bonding and empathy,

MacLean thought this system was especially important to early mammals.

The final layer to be added on was what MacLean describes as the neomammalian complex, a.k.a. the neocortex,

which is the 6-layered tissue that makes up the majority of the folded,

"brainy"-looking part of our brains called the cerebral cortex.

This, which is much bigger in "higher" mammals like us and our primate relatives,

is what he thought gives us language, reason and conscious perception of the outside world.

And according to this theory, each of these layers acts as a separate quote "brain".

So when you get angry and lash out at a potential rival, that's your reptile brain taking over,

but when you ponder the great wonders of the world, your neomammalian brain is in charge.

Which is why some pop-psychology articles talk about reigning in your reptilian brain,

though that's not really what MacLean was going for.

In some ways, the Triune Brain Theory is kind of true, but it's also pretty wrong.

MacLean was kind of right that different parts of the brain have somewhat different tasks,

but his groupings weren't perfect.

Those quote "reptilian" basal ganglia do help us form habits,

and they play a big role in controlling voluntary movements.

But they're also involved in emotions and executive functions like self control.

For example one part, the nucleus accumbens, is a big player in the brain's reward circuit.

As for the limbic system, that paleomammalian part, it is heavily involved in emotion and bonding,

thanks largely to a structure called the amygdala.

But the term "limbic system" is kind of falling out of favor because neuroscientists

can't really agree what's actually in it.

Some neuroscientists consider the orbitofrontal cortex, the part of the brain that helps make decisions,

to be in the limbic system, too, because it's tightly connected to other parts of it.

Or they use a more encompassing term, the paralimbic system, instead.

Others just stick to functional networks within the entire cerebral cortex,

which includes both the limbic system and that neomammalian neocortex.

Speaking of which, MacLean was right that the neocortex is a big part of our reasoning, speech and cognitive abilities,

but as the majority of the cerebral cortex,

it's kind of got its fingers in all the neural pies.

And it's not required for intelligence.

Octopus can perform some really tricky cognitive tasks

like remembering how to get out of a maze without a shred of neocortex.

Also, MacLean's names for these so-called brains aren't great either

because they don't really have anything to do with the animals they're named after.

That 'reptile brain' didn't first appear in reptiles,

and the limbic system isn't unique to mammals.

In fact, most animals with backbones, including fish and amphibians, have basal ganglia and a limbic system.

And "lower" mammals like mice do have a neocortex.

There's even evidence that other animals have a neocortex of sorts.

Their brains contain the same types of cells as the ones in our neocortex,

they just aren't arranged in 6 layers.

That might explain how birds, which are actually reptiles, care for their young or have linguistic abilities.

What differs between brains isn't who has what so much as their relative size and shape.

And it's not even fair to say that these regions are most developed in those groups of animals.

While it's true that our neocortex is a lot bigger than a mouse's, even accounting for body size,

some of the structures in primate basal ganglia and limbic systems are also larger and more complex.

So they aren't just hold overs from our more primitive ancestors.

But perhaps the biggest problem with the Triune Brain Theory is the idea that these different "brains" work independently, or even linearly.

We don't have three separate brains, we have one big coordinated one.

Brain activity underlying a behavior may start in one specific area, but it'll soon spread as other parts help out,

an idea known as distributive processing.

And that's how that neocortex has its fingers in all the pies.

Let's say some really attractive person starts hitting on your partner, and that makes you livid.

Those feelings of rage might start with activity in the amygdala, a part of that "limbic system".

But then other parts of the cerebral cortex including neocortical areas

can either increase or decrease the probability that you'll flip out based on cues from the environment.

And the basal ganglia, particularly the nucleus accumbens,

play a key role in deciding what you actually do with all your anger

by integrating information from both the neocortex and the limbic system.

So your jealous rage isn't your territorial, protoreptilian complex taking control,

it's multiple parts of your brain working in concert.

To cut MacLean some slack though, his theory reflected the knowledge neuroscientists had at the time.

Like many scientific theories, it evolved and became outdated

as scientists got new information through neuroimaging and behavior studies.

So, although MacLean was on the right track in terms of understanding how brain structure relates to function,

he got a lot wrong when it comes to how those structures work together

and the evolution of animal brains.

And ultimately, that means you don't need to worry about trying to control your reptilian brain

because it doesn't exist!

Food scientists: Eat more wild papaya for a stronger immune system

Wednesday, August 01, 2018 by: Michelle Simmons

Eating more papaya (Carica papaya) can help boost your immune system, according to a study

published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

The leaf concentrate of papaya has been traditionally used as an immunomodulatory remedy against

various diseases.

However, there is limited research on the effect of papaya on supporting the immune

system.

Thus, researchers in Sri Lanka conducted a study on the immunomodulatory potential of

mature papaya leaf concentrate using mice models.

For the study, they orally gave mice the mature papaya leaf concentrate at doses of 0.18,

0.36, and 0.72 milligrams (ml) per 100 grams (g) of body weight once a day for three consecutive

days.

They then assessed the treatment's effect on the nonfunctional (enumeration of immune

cells and cytokine levels) and functional (cell proliferation and phagocytic activity)

immune responses.

They also tested whether the oral intake of the mature papaya leaf concentrate was safe.

Based on the results, all doses of the papaya leaf concentrate significantly improved the

counts of platelets, total leukocytes, lymphocyte and monocyte subpopulations, and bone marrow

cells of the mice.

These improvements indicated the effectiveness of enhancing the immune system.

In addition, the highest dose of the papaya concentrate reduced inflammatory cytokines,

interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF?), suggesting the anti-inflammatory

effects of the treatment.

Moreover, the treatment also improved phagocytosis of peritoneal macrophages, which suggested

a modulation of the functional immunity of mice.

It also modulated cytokine responses.

The chemical profile of the mature papaya leaf concentrates also the presence of several

immunomodulatory compounds.

The researchers also concluded that the treatment was safe as it did not cause any side effects

on the liver and kidneys of the mice.

The findings of the study established the immunomodulatory properties of the mature

papaya leaf concentrate as it effectively modulated immune responses by stimulating

immune cell proliferation, increasing phagocytosis activity, and modulating cytokine responses.

Therefore, the researchers concluded that the oral intake of the mature papaya leaf

concentrate is a safe and effective remedy for enhancing the immune system.

Other benefits of the papaya In addition to papaya's immune-boosting

and anti-inflammatory effects, the superfood also offers many health benefits.

Here are some of them:

Papaya aids digestion – Papaya contains papain, an enzyme known to aid digestion by

breaking down proteins.

It is also rich in fiber and water content.

Drinking papaya juice is often recommended as a remedy for digestive problems or constipation.

Papaya helps prevent heart disease and cancer – The antioxidants, fiber, potassium, and

vitamin content in papaya work against free radicals, therefore protecting the body from

heart problems and cancer.

The seeds of papaya also help detoxify liver and kidneys, fight cancer, and aid in digestion.

Papaya helps maintain blood sugar and cholesterol levels – Studies have shown that eating

raw papaya could help maintain blood sugar and cholesterol levels due to its high fiber

content, thus preventing diabetes.

Papaya supports skin health – Slices of papaya fruit can be used as a natural skin

cleanser because of the fruit's active enzymes that get rid of impurities.

Papaya helps prevent arthritis – Papaya contains high amounts of calcium, potassium,

magnesium, and copper.

Eating papaya regularly helps increase the calcium levels in the body, which in the long

run, helps prevent arthritis.

Papaya aids in weight loss – Because papaya is low in calories and rich in vitamins, minerals,

and fiber, it can be a healthy food option for people who are trying to lose weight.

Here's What I Think About Honda CVT Transmissions and More - Duration: 3:29.

rev up your engines, Rohan says I got a Honda City 2006 CVT transmission,

acceleration is slow can you give me some tips on how to drive it, okay here's

the problem, CVT transmissions are just weak

transmissions period, they're just weak, and in that Honda they're underpowered

weak automatic transmissions, so basically you're more or less want to

live with whatever it does, now if it's really bad, you might go to a Honda

mechanic who's a pro and has a dealer scan tool and he can check it out there

might be some reprogramming that could be done for the transmission as it ages

but really, ah they're just weak transmissions, it's one reason I don't like

buying them, the newer ones are better than the older ones and that's what, an

06 so it's 13 years old, but the new ones they do shift a little bit better

but they still have what I call a lag, I don't like them but

see if I a Honda guy maybe he could reprogram it to shift a little bit

better, Tyler silk says, I have a 98 Civic

and the passenger side tie rods are bad but the others are perfectly fine, do you

recommend replacing just the passenger side or all of them, just change the passanger

side, when they're worn out replace them, realize that cars don't wear evenly

and here's the thing, generally the passenger sides always wear out faster

and here's why, because when you're driving your car, guess what you hit

potholes and stuff with more often, the passenger side because you're on the

driver's side you see the holes you move out of the way, but you can't see it

right in front of the passenger side so you're gonna hit more things, just change

the ones that you see are bad and leave it at that,

Jeremy blue says, my a/c doesn't work on my Chevy Tahoe but the fuses are good

the battery lights on as well, okay if the battery light is on it means your

alternator is not charging right, cars are so complex these days, that if your

system isn't charging right, then it may turn a lot of things off like the AC, go

to a place like autozone, they load test your batteries and alternators free, you

might find you need an alternator and that will fix the AC, if not you got two

problems and an AC system not coming on the first thing you want to check is

just check the refrigerant, just have a mechanic put gauges on it

because if you low on refrigerant it'll do the same thing, you want to pray

something simple like that and not something like Chevy's are known for having bad

controllers and that's a computer part that costs a lot of money then has to be

reprogrammed by a mechanic, so you want to pray it's something simple, column wart

says, I have a Subaru Forester 1999, the wheel gets really hot when I Drive

for long periods and gives off a burning smell, okay your brakes are sticking on

whatever wheel is smelling generally means your brakes are sticking on, Jack it up

in the air and try spinning all the wheels, you find one wheel doesn't spin and sticks

the brakes are sticking, that can be a bad caliper, a rotten brake hose, or a bad

master cylinder not releasing pressure, normally it's a caliper on those things

you check that, survey says, what are your thoughts on buying an EVAP canister

from a junkyard, okay depends on the car, lets say if it's a

Chrysler, I wouldn't buy one, they got problems with them, if it's a Toyota go

ahead and buy one because they very rarely go bad, if you got a car like a Toyota or

Honda that they rarely brake on, you might try a used one why not, so if

you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos, remember to ring

I'm graduating with today, and it's hit me that this

Have fun.

- Don't try to change yourself for others, 'cause in

the end all that really matters is what you're doing.

being a kindergartener I didn't know

my months and I was made fun of.

(laughs)

- The first day may be hard, but it gets a lot better.

- Have fun, make friends, be social, just make the best

out of school and never give up, that's all I gotta say.

- Have as much fun as you can, enjoy everything that you

do and learn a lot, 'cause everything that you do right now,

you're gonna take with you, so get into those

good habits, make your friends, smile, be nice

to each other 'cause it's important.

(upbeat music)

hiking Santa Maria volcano 2018 - episode 1 - DIY getting there (SUBS EN,ES,PL) - Duration: 2:23.

I'm out of breath. I'm happy. I didn't go for Santa Maria

Should I do Santa Maria without the guide

Again an early start this time at 5:00 a.m. In order to get

The 6:00 a.m. Bus or even maybe earlier one

to go to Santa Maria

We're going to do to climb the volcano in

Do-it-yourself way, that's the church from what you

Take the bus calvario, very close to the cemetery

It's about 15 minutes walk from the hostel

People are going to the market

And we are the only one who are staying in this month

So you might have to do some rounds around the city to get enough people

some religious songs are making the day very

Energetic we both need it

For Lisa it's a muffin stop

For us it's a gasoline stop. So all the time

It's pumped up into the engine and then off we go

So this is the path doesn't seem like a hiking path

Doesn't seem so high, but apparently it's a very difficult tough

and

extreme hike

Well, let's see about that. Hike is

The first challenge not to get lost at the base the path to

climb up

And then enjoy the view

with a snack

Which I almost ate

So I would just enjoy the view

And the fog is rising above the ganas de pinna

So we went different route in the same place
