one thing that you worked on twice actually at two different times is the 7 CD New
Funk Sample Set - yeah so I know that was originally happening around rave unto the joy
fantastic era then nothing for years and years and years and then at NAMM in 2010
2011 you was doing an interview and you said you were working on it again so what
happened back cuz Hans told us that Prince kind of flip-flopped on it, he
wanted to do it he didn't want to do it..... Well, my thing was... I managed to talk him out of it. He wanted
to do it and I didn't think that number one.... He kinda made good logic but he
didn't because he didn't know the game and what my thing was I used a lot of
sample CDs and stuff like that in our production like a lot of stuff we
used like for Interactive I had some Steve Stevens guitar samples crazy sounds and i would incorporate them into the tracks we did.
So Prince decided he wanted to do this and it's crazy to me because he's like wanting to do seven CDs different genres like horns, vocals, guitar, drums, bass, keys basically 99 tracks just like a
CD I'm like Prince this is NOT gonna work! He said Why not? like you know how much it's $700
it would cost them a lot more to get me to come in the studio and play it. I mean I
understand that but that's not how the sample game works it's like when you
have samples it's like gigs of like data on here you got like 99 tracks
and that's like cut.... and plus, I said Prince, Warner Bros is never gonna go for this.
I said, you got "Kiss", you got all of these excerpts from the actual record.
That's gotta get cleared from them, and I called Londell McMillan, and I told Londell, I said, Londell
Prince is doing this sample CD and I really think it's gonna be a problem, man.
And I played it for him and he's like oh yeah, no, this is not gonna work.
And I said well you gotta talk to him! If he puts this out.... and I'm working there so the dude is telling me I want you to do this thing
like, it's part of my job to do it. But I'm trying to reason with him like, Prince, if you put this out
Once it's out, like...Anybody can have these loops on this thing.
I don't see how Warners are gonna go for this, or how it's going to work.
I didn't know if he really understood how that thing worked. It'd be different if he said I'm gonna play all original stuff on this disc.
And now they have this new set. But what I did manage to do towards the end and it just never got fulfilled,
I was working with....a good friend of mine here, Damien Egan, and what I told him was Prince, I think this is the move.
That we make a virtual instrument and we put all of our sounds in this virtual instrument and people could buy the virtual instrument with the Prince sounds in it.
That way, it becomes a more playable thing that's open to intepretation, we can put the essence of these drum loops
and stuff like that with separate hits, and he was like OK. But the sample CD project itself, I finally managed to talk him out of it.
Like, I just think it's not a good idea. You're gonna fight with the label, they're gonna come for this and it's gonna be a fight, man. And Londell agreed with me.
I played him some of the samples, and he's like oh my god, yeah, no. This cannot happen.
A lot of fans were surprised even that Crystal Ball managed to come out with all the stuff being Warners material.
That's what I'm saying man, it was crazy. But it's hard to stop a train when Prince got on something. He kinda went back and forth on it.
He just knew that I could do it, and I did the work, it's done! But I said, don't release it. It was cool for me, he paid me to do it.
And all of this kinda stuff. But I just said, don't do this, man. Not this way.
I feel like, A) you've got the Warners thing and B) like if he did put it out and then all of a sudden there's like a commercial for steak, and it's got like sounds from "1999" in it, then Prince is gonna be like..... wait, what?
I thought the same thing, like I don't know if he understands what's gonna happen once everybody has this.
Someone could technically make a full on new album out of samples of all your songs
Right, and that's why I thought, since Warners had a hand on the publishing of that, they were gonna have to have approval too and nobody there was gonna do that.
They wouldn't approve that, I don't think. Who knows, but that was my take on it and Londell agreed with me about that.
He was so into it that he even did the advert on the DVD for Rave - oh yeah, I did this whole promo where I programmed my computer to talk like this whole section of
conversations about this and we've made this whole like commercials like bang
this crazy. But it's cool, to me it's like The Black Album, I get to be a part of something that's like "What happened to that one thing that happened" and it's in The Vault so that's one of those things. It's in The Vault and there's where it'll be.
In this day and age you could have made like an app out of it.
so like the virtual..... Oh like I said you know we just did and we implemented, towards the end I was working with Prince after I had left the band, I had left in 2012. We
were in talks about it and I had this guy Damien and we had the whole thing and it was dope. And I'm still gonna do it! But from a different
perspective like from Mr Hayes type keyboards programmed like how I used to do it so now you have access to the synths and the style but you put it together how you wanna put it together.
So that's what that's about and we'll do that instead and make this really dope other instrument.
There's another component to it, like a teaching component and that's sorta thing too. That's something I'm looking at
working on and it's just an accident that my guy Damien was at the show last night and we're gonna put that together.
he's got a press boards for Black Eyed Peas he's done and a couple other cats you know
just made their own instruments so he showed me the designs and the interface, once I program the sounds it's gonna be a dope instrument.
What would you say was the hardest thing for you about working with Prince?
The unknown. The thing that comes to mind is I used to come to rehearsal, and I would park in the underground garage. And whenever I would pull in and see his car I was like "Oh my god, he's here", my stomach would just like
get upset like "oh god"
"uuuuuuughhhhhh" cuz it would be so hard some days, like, who's day is it gonna be to get killed cuz he was tough in rehearsals, oh my god.
so that was the thing for me, the stress. Not knowing if it's gonna be a good day or a bad day.
If it's gonna be fun, or if it's gonna be like... *angry choking sounds* you know, there was that.
But it made you better, you know. It's like boot camp. You go in for basic training and like pow pow pow we're gotta toughen you up and make you great, his whole thing was about making you great.
What is something that you til this day that you take with you?
The whole experience really. You know, Prince came to my house. This dude came to my house, towards the end when I was leaving and it was one of the craziest things.
I remember telling my wife at the time, he came over with Bria.
And I was cooking something, and he just showed up at my house. I'm like, what's up dude? I said do you wanna come in and he could smell the meat and was like nah I'll stay out here on the porch.
Now I lived in like a lil area and Kirk lived across from me, this area right across from his driveway.
And so he's out on the porch and he's like telling me all this stuff like Morris I really appreciate you, you've introduced me to a lot of people that Iove.
I'm standing here like "What is this?" like he's on my porch, like the neighbours could see him, you know!
And he gets down on his knees and kisses my hand! And I'm looking for the cameras like I'm looking for Ashton Kutcher
like, this is Punk'd, i'm like where are the cameras. I'm looking for somebody to jump out and be like HAHA! We got you.
I'm tripping and he goes, you know Morris I'm sorry I was hard on you, I just wanted you to be great.
I'm so stunned because he's saying all of this and telling me he loves me.
It took like 15 minutes or something. He leaves and I go in my wife's office to collect myself, I had to sit down and process what just happened.
I called her at work and said you are not gonna believe what just happened. Prince was just over here with Bria and he was out on our porch and got on his knees and kissed my hand like I was Queen Elizabeth or something.
and told me all the stuff I thought I said I told myself
that it was like a trick and I'm like I'm like going like what the ... just happened right now
I'm like I got tears in my eyes and she's like what?
I'm like he just showed up and told me all this stuff with Bria and thank God she was there
because nobody would believe it if I didn't have a witness
And she was just standing there while he was saying all this stuff. It's funny I got this feeling like I had then like what's happening right now.
I had to collect myself man I went in her office and just sat in her chair for a minute
just like man like this is crazy and I don't know what just happened
but it's bananas it was like great.
A lot of people talk about this kind of like
Gemini duality of like Prince so in order to have
his sort of larger-than-life I'm the man you will all do what I say moments, he also had
to have these moments of like extreme humility and I'm very humble
Absolutely, I don't know a whole lot about astrology and all that stuff but from what I know about Gemini he is a classic Gemini.
The two sides thing is just so true and it's funny man, it's just so funny
from one day to the next, with him you just don't know. And that's when I came up with the whole theory that there's 5 of him. There was 5 Princes.
And I had numbered them, and named them. There was like Prince #1, the one I saw first, was the Purple Rain Prince. When I went to see the movie that's what I thought Prince was.
When I got there, and I got to see the hard dude in rehearsal, this dude, I was like oh my god he's mean!
That's Prince #2, that's the second one I got exposed to. #3 was this one that was fun, basketball, talking about each other's moms, joking and playing pranks
#4 was the sad Prince. Like the guy that was really hurting somewhere, and when he's hurt, you're gonna be hurt too. That's just the way it was.
and #5 was the dude who'd give you the shirt off his back. For anybody, he would just do some of the most incredible acts of kindness you've ever seen in terms of giving.
Those were the 5 that I just kinda identified and what I figured out was that when I come in, I don't say nothin.
I just let him start talking and then I know which one showed up. And so if he came and he was hot, I'd say OK, #2 is here today.
And I'd let the band know #2 is here, if you got a problem day and don't have your work together, you're in a world of trouble
and if he was like in a jovial mood, I'd say alright, #3 is here. and if #2 was there that's what you'd hear, a lot of screaming, that's what you'd hear at Paisley if #2 showed up.
When you were at 3121 in Vegas at the Rio, will.i.am told the story about (Michael?) - Michael in the audience, Prince goes over playing bass - did he laugh about that?
Yeah, it was funny man, I remember when Mike came that night, it was bananas cuz we had the Twins man and they LOVED Mike, they looooooooooved Mike so they just lost it man.
They just went banana sandwiches, like *impersonates The Twinz* "ooohhhhh god he's here" and I was like man, relax, chill out, they was like
"he's backstage right now, he's backstaaaage, oh my goddddd"
Yeah, The Twinz were funny, cos they're Australian girls, everything's like *unintelligible fast-paced blabbering in Australian accent* like didgeridoos, nothing changes, no up and down
I remember Will talking about it cuz Prince went over to his table and stood on his table like *mimics slap bass playing* right in their faces ya know.
And he said, that Mike said "Prince is such a meanie!" *laughing* but it was cool, Mike came back and Dave Chappelle was there that night.
and it was cool because Prince had invited them over to his apartment, we had this crazy place at this hotel just like him and Elton John and
a bunch of people staying there and you get like a whole floor and it's like, bananas. So he invited Mike and all them over, the Jackson's people, and he asked me, cuz I had had my car shipped out.
Prince said "You should bring your car out and we'll have our cars out". He had his Bentley.
And I had my lil convertible. And I had brought my car but it's like a 2 seater.
you know the Lexus convertible he said, could you bring over Rebbie
and her son and I was like well I think I can get him in the back, it's a short ride. He said yeah just put him in the back. So Rebbie Jackson got in the car with me and I took her over to the house.
Mike said he couldn't come, he said thanks but I gotta go do something else.
and we just went over the house but it was cool man, Mike came, and he was just like, he really liked the show and everything, and The Twinz, you just had to like scoop them up with a shovel. They just melted man, they was done.
Shelby and them was back there, and they was all trippin man. It was cool man that Mike came through.
But it's like, they were friends but Prince was always competitive. It was always a thing like it's my show and Mike is here and he always had this.....
They reminded me of like that cartoon, with the coyote and the dog, punch in the clock and they're at war, while they're doing their work and then they punch the clock out, and they're walking together going home.
That reminded me of Prince and Michael, you know. If it was on the stage it was always competition but if it's after, they was cool.
He told me about a time, Prince, Mike and Lenny Kravitz in the studio together all hanging out talking, just shooting the breeze, talking about different stuff! Like, what!
He was like don't let Mike fool you, Mike is a pimp, don't let him fool you, he be cool but he'll be like *flirty MJ voice* "Hey, what's your name?" and I was like what!!! That's crazy.
Did you ever see him out at Paisley? Cuz I think that Michael B said that MJ came to Paisley once.
I didn't see it, I think I heard that, that he was there but I wasn't there, I didn't see it, or.... I thought I heard somebody say that he was there but I wasn't there though.
I know they had a meeting at like, Record Plant, or something, once. Yeah, he had told me that he had hung out with him in the studio, him and Lenny were talking about it.
I'm not gonna talk about what they said but it was funny man, I was like, man, that's so cool, all 3 of y'all just kicking it in the studio man.
Prince was very distraught when Mike died, man. He took it really hard. I went to the studio and he told me to send everybody home.
I know he had brought, uh, Lenny's drummer. Cindy Blackman had came.
And I think, ummm, bass player, Nik West, and this other girl that was playing with....
And he just said, take a video of them, put it on my desk, and put them on a plane and send them home, I don't want to do anything for the rest of the week.
He was just distraught and said, I don't feel no music right now. Send the band home for the rest of the week, and I'll call you.
He took it very, very hard man, and you know, and what's crazy about it is, the day before
I rode with Prince to go get some coffee, he liked this iced coffee at this place called Caribou.
And we rode over there and he got in the car and didn't put his seatbelt on. I said man, put your seatbelt on. He said I don't like it man, it messes up my suits.
And I said it's better to have a wrinkled up suit than a wrinkled up butt. So I said, put yo seatbelt on, man. And he put it on and went to get the coffee, and the next night...
He called me and said he wanted to go to the club, we were going downtown to check out this band. So when I got to Paisley, he said, you drive.
So I got in his car and I'm driving man and I said Prince, put yo seatbelt on man! And he said, well, I'll put it on since you drivin, like trying to make a joke.
I said Prince, for real, dude, if something were to happen to you, people would be distraught man. You a national treasure, matter fact, an international treasure.
You do not wanna get taken out over something simple like a seatbelt. I just told him - you gotta wear your seatbelt bro.
Cuz Prince was a terrible driver, man. He drove way too fast and he was terrible, man! I'd be riding with him and I'd be like "oh my god, ohhhh god" and so whenever I rode with him, I drove!
He had his Bentley out in LA and we were on Sunset, it was like 2 in the morning, 1 o clock in the morning or something man, he'd just got this Bentley and he's like dude you should drive it man, it's crazy fast.
I'm like, I don't wanna do it, I don't wanna get no ticket in Beverly Hills. He said don't worry about that man, just punch it! I said Prince I don't wanna get no ticket man!
He said, I'll pay for it!
I'm like, man, it'd be on my record. He's like, Morris you are such a baby! And I punched this thing. Bro....
I had no freaking clue that this thing has this kinda power. It took off and it was like a cartoon, I was like aaahhhh! Pinned back in the seat, almost ran into some trees bro.
He was laughing his head off man, he thinks it's funny. I'm like oh my god, Prince this car is heavy, I didn't think that it could go this fast.
Cuz you could feel the weight of this car, it's like a V12. It's like a freakin airplane engine in this thing. I was like, oh my god bro.
He's laying over on the window laughing. He's thinking it's the funniest thing ever and I'm like, I just told him
If something were to happen to you, man, people....... The *next day* Michael Jackson died. And I think coupled with what I told him about if something would happen to him and how the world would be sad...
That next day the world was sad because of what happened to Michael Jackson, and I think it hit him, man, it hit him in the chest cuz that's a reality check.
