My name is Thorsten Bauer. I'm the curator of the Elbphilharmonie Media Wall, and I deal with the
artistic format and develop the content that the Elbphilharmonie shows on the display.
This Year I initiated the ELMAN Project.
ELMAN is an international cooperation between the Elbphilharmonie Media Wall and
a very similar media installation in Singapore.
The special feature is that we've set up two classes of students,
one here in Hamburg and the other in Singapore, who are both designing content for this installation.
What makes the students' work special is that it has been produced with this location in mind,
always against the background that this is a place that stands for something.
Thus music is the central theme of the project work.
Then you need to know that the installation itself works without music – in other words, I can only see the
images, I can't hear them.
The students have been asked to reflect on and treat the subject of music visually, in an abstract
and artistic fashion.
The tour of the entire building before we embarked on the projekt was a vital source of inspiration,
giving the students the chance to get to know the Elbphilharmonie first-hand.
The second step involved developing concepts.
Based on this experience and on the briefing, the participants came up with their own ideas and presented
them in rough draft. They were given plenty of scope, and what they produced has a wide creative range.
Some of them then approached the subject of music along representational lines, for example, via the
instruments, while others focused on the emotions that music can trigger.
Goosebumps are one example here: a person's response to music is shown in abstract,
and the resulting images are a pleasure to view.
It seems to me that this is a perfect match for the Elbphilharmonie,
which itself is international, open-minded and invites artistic activity.
The same thing happens on the Media Wall: we've got an international project where young students from
Singapore take a close look at the Elbphilharmonie and create art for the location.
That enriches the Elbphilharmonie as a whole as well as the Media Wall in particular.
We can learn from this, and it also reflects the Elbphilharmonie's open-minded and international attitude.
We can be glad that we have the chance to present exactly the same idea
in this detail of the concert hall's work.
