Muse Metallique #1 - Le massacre d'Oradour-Sur-Glane - Duration: 9:33.

If I tell you June 1944,

there is a good chance that you answer me "landing of June 6 in Normandy".

And this is normal, since this event is a major event in the Second World War history.

But if I told you that four days later, on June 10, another event had taken place,

whose horror also deserves a place in our memories?

Welcome to this first video of the Metallic Muses, which will allow me to speak about topics

that I could not approach otherwise.

In Curious Metalhead, I take a song and I use the text to tell what's going on

behind, this time I will do the opposite: I will take a historical fact and I will compose a song around this fact.

Because I think music is a great way to send messages,

and because I realize that many people around me do not know what it is,

the subject of this first video will focus on the massacre of Oradour-Sur-Glane, June 10, 1944.

Oradour-Sur-Glane is a small village in Haute-Vienne, located about twenty kilometers from Limoges.

At the beginning of the Second World War, the village has only 330 inhabitants.

Counting the surrounding farms and hamlets, this number rises about 1500 souls.

It is a small and peaceful village, which did not experience the war, even after the occupation of the free zone in 1942.

Until the day the Das Reich comes.

The Panzerdivision Das Reich is a Waffen-SS motorized division,

who rebuilds his forces in Montauban after a difficult campaign on the eastern front.

Following the landing of the Allies on June 6, 1944, it was ordered to go to Normandy

and reduce the actions of the Resistance on its way.

The Das Reich, under the command of General Heinz Lammerding, is accustomed to the tactics of terror,

which it made its specialty in the USSR, bruning down many villages.

Thus, during its progression, the division made a first bloody stop in Tulle on June 9,

the city was taken over by the Resistance two days earlier.

A unit of the division takes back the city and applies its repression,

99 inhabitants are executed, hanged on the balconies of the city.

Lammerding hopes that by martyring the population, it will no longer support the Resistance.

That's why he gives the order to Adolf Diekmann,

commanding the 1st battalion of the 3rd Panzergrenadier company of the division,

to conduct an operation that will produce a maximum effect of terror.

We do not know exactly why Oradour was targeted.

Still, in the early afternoon of Saturday, June 10, 1944,

about 150 SS soldiers encircle the village after driving most of the inhabitants of the surrounding hamlets.

The inhabitants are gathered in the market square in peace. They do not know what happened

in Tulle the day before, and in addition the SS soldiers are not aggressive and claim to perform a simple identity check.

The women and children are taken to the church, while the men are spread out in 6 barns in the city.

The soldiers tell them that there is nothing to fear, that they are only looking for weapons,

and those who have none will be left alone.

Men are reassured because they know they have nothing to hide,

and some wonder when will they be able to get back to work?

Then an order is given.

The SS trigger their machine guns and aim in the legs so that men can not run away.

Survivors are shot down at close range,

straw is spread over the body and then lit to set it on fire.

Only 6 men will escape from the Laudy barn, but one of them will be shot in his flight.

The other five remain hidden for hours, waiting for the soldiers to leave.

At the same time, soldiers place a box of explosive in the middle of the church and light the wicks.

The smoke prevents women and children from breathing, they suffocate.

Because of the explosion, the windows of the church have shattered,

then the soldiers throw grenades to finish the job.

Those who try to escape the burning building are shot down.

The only survivor of the church, Ms. Rouffanche, will tell later that she jumped out the window of the sacristy with another woman and her baby.

Spotted, bullets fly in their direction. The woman and the baby are shot on the spot.

Mrs. Rouffanche, hurt, will hide somehow in the neighboring gardens and will be discovered the next day.

The massacre lasted only a few hours and killed 642 people.

197 men, 240 women and 205 children.

In the evening around 18h, the tram from Limoges brings back the inhabitants of Oradour who had gone to the city

do their work, their shopping, cinema, etc ...

They are arrested by the Nazis, and after two hours of uncertainty about their near future,

are finally released.

Unable to access the village, they join the inhabitants of neighboring hamlets who have escaped the raid.

The killing is only discovered the next day, after the departure of the Nazis.

The witnesses are in shock in front of the extent of the damage. The entirety of the houses is destroyed.

Due to fires and the state of the bodies, only 52 will be identified.

The Nazis have quickly dug some mass graves to try to hide the massacre,

and some bodies were even thrown into a nearby well.

In January 1953, a trial opens in Bordeaux to judge those responsible for this massacre.

Of the 65 accused, only 21 will be present.

At that moment, we realize that among the 21 accused present,

14 are French of Alsatian origin, conscripted by force into the SS.

As a result, many of the sentences handed down that day will never be executed.

in the name of national reconciliation, provoking indignation in Haute-Vienne.

If Diekmann died during the fights in Normandy, General Lammerding

will never be worried by the trials.

He will become a successful entrepreneur and will die in 1971 in Düsseldorf.

After the liberation of Paris, General De Gaulle will decide to leave the ruins as they are.

The village will be rebuilt a little further, and in 1999 will open the Memory Center of Oradour,

a place of exhibition and permanent memory.

Oradour-Sur-Glane is not the only village victim of the passage of the SS.

I already talked about Tulle a little earlier, and I could also have talked about Maillé,

a small village of Touraine burned to ashes in August 1944, and tomb of 124 victims.

Moreover, the tragedy of Oradour was unfortunately an ordinary pattern on the Eastern Front,

where several hundred villages have been burned to ashes.

But by its magnitude, Oradour-Sur-Glane has become the symbol of Nazi barbarism in France.

Well, composing on a subject like this is a little complicated.

I could have made a Slayer-like song, ultra nag and focused on anger and misunderstanding,

So, I decided to reduce the "headbang" factor of the song by composing a power ballad.

For those who do not know, I schematize a little bit, a power ballad is a song

Or Still Loving You, from Scorpion.

The advantage of this style is that it covers a wide spectrum of emotions,

while remaining accessible to people who are not fans of metal.

For the angle under which focus the composition, I decided to put myself in the shoes of a person

who would discover Oradour in the aftermath of the massacre.

On the one hand, it will allow to tell, even if it is a little overflown, what happened in Oradour,

and on the other hand it automatically cuts the song.

We will have two major parts.

The first part will be relatively quiet, with an acoustic guitar in arpeggios, a discrete drums and a bass.

Our narrator will discover Oradour, first by visiting the various key places of the massacre,

then by understanding what's going on there. When he understands what happened in those places,

a distorted electric guitar will be added to the instrumentation,

symbolizing his growing dread.

This first part will end with a solo and will open on a tense break.

The acoustic guitar will disappear completely, replaced by a second electric guitar distortion.

Time suspends its flight for a moment, in shock, as were the rescuers

who really intervened.

This break allows to enter the 2nd part of the song,

more edgy, faster, the narrator has not much to discover but he still has things to say.

At that moment, I could be reproached for pouring into bad moralizing discourse.

But for me, this song is an opportunity to tell what happened in Oradour

and to denounce the extremes to which fascism and hatred lead.

There is no room for subtlety.

And in this idea of ​​memory, we reach the end of the song, which takes up the maxim

from the Oradour Memory Center: "remember"

Remember the martyrs of Oradour, but also remember what led to this massacre.

Solo, with a battery that accelerates, then "remember" again.

The more time passes, the more the duty of memory is important, lest this memory fade.

Muse Metallique #1 - Le massacre d'Oradour-Sur-Glane - Duration: 9:33.

If I tell you June 1944,

there is a good chance that you answer me "landing of June 6 in Normandy".

And this is normal, since this event is a major event in the Second World War history.

But if I told you that four days later, on June 10, another event had taken place,

whose horror also deserves a place in our memories?

Welcome to this first video of the Metallic Muses, which will allow me to speak about topics

that I could not approach otherwise.

In Curious Metalhead, I take a song and I use the text to tell what's going on

behind, this time I will do the opposite: I will take a historical fact and I will compose a song around this fact.

Because I think music is a great way to send messages,

and because I realize that many people around me do not know what it is,

the subject of this first video will focus on the massacre of Oradour-Sur-Glane, June 10, 1944.

Oradour-Sur-Glane is a small village in Haute-Vienne, located about twenty kilometers from Limoges.

At the beginning of the Second World War, the village has only 330 inhabitants.

Counting the surrounding farms and hamlets, this number rises about 1500 souls.

It is a small and peaceful village, which did not experience the war, even after the occupation of the free zone in 1942.

Until the day the Das Reich comes.

The Panzerdivision Das Reich is a Waffen-SS motorized division,

who rebuilds his forces in Montauban after a difficult campaign on the eastern front.

Following the landing of the Allies on June 6, 1944, it was ordered to go to Normandy

and reduce the actions of the Resistance on its way.

The Das Reich, under the command of General Heinz Lammerding, is accustomed to the tactics of terror,

which it made its specialty in the USSR, bruning down many villages.

Thus, during its progression, the division made a first bloody stop in Tulle on June 9,

the city was taken over by the Resistance two days earlier.

A unit of the division takes back the city and applies its repression,

99 inhabitants are executed, hanged on the balconies of the city.

Lammerding hopes that by martyring the population, it will no longer support the Resistance.

That's why he gives the order to Adolf Diekmann,

commanding the 1st battalion of the 3rd Panzergrenadier company of the division,

to conduct an operation that will produce a maximum effect of terror.

We do not know exactly why Oradour was targeted.

Still, in the early afternoon of Saturday, June 10, 1944,

about 150 SS soldiers encircle the village after driving most of the inhabitants of the surrounding hamlets.

The inhabitants are gathered in the market square in peace. They do not know what happened

in Tulle the day before, and in addition the SS soldiers are not aggressive and claim to perform a simple identity check.

The women and children are taken to the church, while the men are spread out in 6 barns in the city.

The soldiers tell them that there is nothing to fear, that they are only looking for weapons,

and those who have none will be left alone.

Men are reassured because they know they have nothing to hide,

and some wonder when will they be able to get back to work?

Then an order is given.

The SS trigger their machine guns and aim in the legs so that men can not run away.

Survivors are shot down at close range,

straw is spread over the body and then lit to set it on fire.

Only 6 men will escape from the Laudy barn, but one of them will be shot in his flight.

The other five remain hidden for hours, waiting for the soldiers to leave.

At the same time, soldiers place a box of explosive in the middle of the church and light the wicks.

The smoke prevents women and children from breathing, they suffocate.

Because of the explosion, the windows of the church have shattered,

then the soldiers throw grenades to finish the job.

Those who try to escape the burning building are shot down.

The only survivor of the church, Ms. Rouffanche, will tell later that she jumped out the window of the sacristy with another woman and her baby.

Spotted, bullets fly in their direction. The woman and the baby are shot on the spot.

Mrs. Rouffanche, hurt, will hide somehow in the neighboring gardens and will be discovered the next day.

The massacre lasted only a few hours and killed 642 people.

197 men, 240 women and 205 children.

In the evening around 18h, the tram from Limoges brings back the inhabitants of Oradour who had gone to the city

do their work, their shopping, cinema, etc ...

They are arrested by the Nazis, and after two hours of uncertainty about their near future,

are finally released.

Unable to access the village, they join the inhabitants of neighboring hamlets who have escaped the raid.

The killing is only discovered the next day, after the departure of the Nazis.

The witnesses are in shock in front of the extent of the damage. The entirety of the houses is destroyed.

Due to fires and the state of the bodies, only 52 will be identified.

The Nazis have quickly dug some mass graves to try to hide the massacre,

and some bodies were even thrown into a nearby well.

In January 1953, a trial opens in Bordeaux to judge those responsible for this massacre.

Of the 65 accused, only 21 will be present.

At that moment, we realize that among the 21 accused present,

14 are French of Alsatian origin, conscripted by force into the SS.

As a result, many of the sentences handed down that day will never be executed.

in the name of national reconciliation, provoking indignation in Haute-Vienne.

If Diekmann died during the fights in Normandy, General Lammerding

will never be worried by the trials.

He will become a successful entrepreneur and will die in 1971 in Düsseldorf.

After the liberation of Paris, General De Gaulle will decide to leave the ruins as they are.

The village will be rebuilt a little further, and in 1999 will open the Memory Center of Oradour,

a place of exhibition and permanent memory.

Oradour-Sur-Glane is not the only village victim of the passage of the SS.

I already talked about Tulle a little earlier, and I could also have talked about Maillé,

a small village of Touraine burned to ashes in August 1944, and tomb of 124 victims.

Moreover, the tragedy of Oradour was unfortunately an ordinary pattern on the Eastern Front,

where several hundred villages have been burned to ashes.

But by its magnitude, Oradour-Sur-Glane has become the symbol of Nazi barbarism in France.

Well, composing on a subject like this is a little complicated.

I could have made a Slayer-like song, ultra nag and focused on anger and misunderstanding,

but I thought head bang on this song listening to it

seemed to me a little bit inappropriate.

So, I decided to reduce the "headbang" factor of the song by composing a power ballad.

For those who do not know, I schematize a little bit, a power ballad is a song

with a rather slow tempo, verses in clear sound and refrains in saturated sound.

And power ballads, you know some, like Nothing Else Matters of Metallica, for example.

Or Still Loving You, from Scorpion.

The advantage of this style is that it covers a wide spectrum of emotions,

while remaining accessible to people who are not fans of metal.

For the angle under which focus the composition, I decided to put myself in the shoes of a person

who would discover Oradour in the aftermath of the massacre.

On the one hand, it will allow to tell, even if it is a little overflown, what happened in Oradour,

and on the other hand it automatically cuts the song.

We will have two major parts.

The first part will be relatively quiet, with an acoustic guitar in arpeggios, a discrete drums and a bass.

Our narrator will discover Oradour, first by visiting the various key places of the massacre,

then by understanding what's going on there. When he understands what happened in those places,

a distorted electric guitar will be added to the instrumentation,

symbolizing his growing dread.

This first part will end with a solo and will open on a tense break.

The acoustic guitar will disappear completely, replaced by a second electric guitar distortion.

Time suspends its flight for a moment, in shock, as were the rescuers

who really intervened.

This break allows to enter the 2nd part of the song,

more edgy, faster, the narrator has not much to discover but he still has things to say.

At that moment, I could be reproached for pouring into bad moralizing discourse.

But for me, this song is an opportunity to tell what happened in Oradour

and to denounce the extremes to which fascism and hatred lead.

There is no room for subtlety.

And in this idea of ​​memory, we reach the end of the song, which takes up the maxim

from the Oradour Memory Center: "remember"

Remember the martyrs of Oradour, but also remember what led to this massacre.

Solo, with a battery that accelerates, then "remember" again.

The more time passes, the more the duty of memory is important, lest this memory fade.

Should Roguelikes Have Persistent Upgrades? | Game Maker's Toolkit - Duration: 10:42.

One of the most common complaints about roguelikes is that when you die after an hour's worth

of hard work, you've gained absolutely nothing.

Roguelikes, if you don't know, are games that are defined by two key concepts: The

levels must be randomly generated each time you play.

And the game must have permadeath, which means all progress is reset to zero whenever you die.

And it's that permadeath that can be a point of contention with certain players.

A lot of people like to make tangible progress in a game, and roguelikes are defined by the

fact that all of your efforts are completely wiped out whenever you kick the bucket.

Leading some players to consider any failed run in a roguelike to be "a waste time".

And, of course, that's the wrong way of looking at it.

Roguelikes are ultimately about practicing your skills, about becoming more familiar

with the game's world, and about learning new tactics.

No failed run in, say, The Binding of Isaac is a waste of time because you've gained

valuable skills and insight that will help you succeed in future attempts.

But still - I get it.

Progress feels good.

I'm certainly not immune to the thrill of numbers going up.

So, perhaps there is a way to add a sense of advancement to roguelikes?

Well, a rather popular solution, as seen in games such as Rogue Legacy, Dead Cells, and

Hades, is to give players upgrades that don't reset upon death - and actually persist between runs.

Take Rogue Legacy.

This game has a randomly cobbled together castle, and when you die you'll be forced

to pick a new character and start from scratch at the castle's front door.

However, any money you find during your run can be spent on upgrades like improved weapons,

extra health, and boosted attack power.

These upgrades are permanent and will be applied to every character you play as, going forward.

Now - that's certainly one way to add a sense of progression!

But, if you ask me - this just doesn't really work.

Let me explain why.

It comes down to this.

In a more traditional roguelike such as Spelunky, the game never changes from run to run.

You'll always start with four health, four bombs, four ropes, and zero money.

So your first playthrough will be mechanically identical to your 736th playthrough.

Ultimately, the difficulty level of the game, across multiple runs, is completely flat.

This means that your success with the game is almost entirely based on your own, ever-increasing

skill level.

Nothing is standing between you and the final boss, except for your own ability and knowledge

of the game's systems.

Other than a particularly lucky or unlucky random roll, of course.

So a highly skilled player can finish rather quickly, and a low skilled player will maybe

never finish the game.

Compare that to a roguelike with persistent upgrades, like Rogue Legacy.

Here, you're constantly getting more powerful with every new upgrade you purchase.

So the difficulty level of this game, across multiple runs, is actually always dropping.

That means your success with this game is much less about your own skill - and much

more dependent on the level of your character.

Rogue Legacy is incredibly hard to finish at the very beginning, because a level zero

character is too weak to face most enemies.

And the game is really quite easy to win after a lot of goes, because a high level character

has become incredibly powerful and resilient.

And the result is that this game can feel like a bit of a grind.

Your early attempts at the game are not about trying to finish the game - just slowly getting

more powerful until you're strong enough to actually succeed.

But given enough time, success with be practically inevitable, as your character will become

so highly powered that most challenges will be a pushover.

Meaning that it's a case of when you will finish the game - not if.

And during all of this time, you'll be left wondering what caused you to fail each run

- was it a lack of skill, or is your character simply too under-levelled to feasibly take

on the challenge at hand?

I know some people can finish Rogue Legacy with a level zero character - but we're

talking about mere mortals, here.

Now, I should say that Rogue Legacy definitely has some clever bits of design that mean you

still have to be somewhat skilful if you want to level up.

The cost of these goodies rises exponentially, and the amount of money you can earn in the

first area is quite low.

So you need to be able to get to the later levels to afford the later upgrades.

Plus, it's hard to save up money because this creepy dude will pinch some of your unspent

cash before he'll let you enter the castle.

So you can't make a small amount of money in loads of different runs and then spend

all of that on an expensive upgrade.

That stuff's smart.

Don't get me wrong - Rogue Legacy is still a smartly designed game and I can see why

people dig it.

But, for me, this stuff wasn't enough to avoid that unwanted sensation of grinding.

So we want to add a sense of progression to our roguelike - but we don't want to introduce

persistent upgrades that will change the difficulty curve of the game.

Luckily, a number of smart developers have found ways to do just that - by letting players

unlock stuff that's fun, but has no meaningful impact on their chances at finishing the game.

Take Enter the Gungeon.

In this game, killing bosses nets you a special currency that you'll hold onto - even after

you die.

And you can use this money in a shop in the game's hub world: but it's not to unlock

new powers for your character like extra health or bigger ammo crates.

Instead, it simply adds more weapons to the game's already bursting selection of randomly

dropped guns.

Meaning next time you go to a treasure chest, there's now a few more firearms that could

pop out.

This doesn't affect the balance of the game, because these items are no more powerful than

the guns you could find at the beginning.

It just adds extra variety to future attempts at the game.

Another idea can be found in Nuclear Throne.

In this roguelike shooter, you can unlock new characters - giving you more options to

choose from when starting your next game.

Just like before, these character aren't any more powerful than the default ones because

they have their own advantages and disadvantages to balance them out.

They just provide different ways to play.

It's like the character classes in the older roguelike games, but if the devs held most

of them back to be unlockable after a certain amount of play.

Another option is to simply offer players cosmetic upgrades that have zero impact on

the way the game plays.

The new colour options in Downwell, for example, are given out as rewards for collecting a

certain number of gems across multiple runs.

That gives you a small reward for continuing to play, but they have no impact on the balance

of the game whatsoever.

Then, go look at Hades.

This in-production roguelike does what developer Supergiant does best: lore and character backstories.

So in this game you unlock more about each character every time you respawn, and you

can find items in the game world that can be given to characters in the hub to butter

them up and unlock more story content.

Unlocking new narrative stuff gives you something to hold onto, even while you're failing

over and over again in the actual game.

Then there are upgrades that sort of affect difficulty, but not completely.

One of which is shortcuts, as seen in Spelunky.

Here, if you do some chores for the tunnel man you can create a new door in the hub world

and start your adventure in, say, the jungle, skipping the first four rooms in the mines entirely.

This arguably does make it easier to get through the game, but seasoned Spelunky players will

know that by forgoing the money, items, and health power ups in the earlier rooms, you'll

actually be making your life much harder in the final stages.

It quickly becomes apparent that these shortcuts are more for practice, than actually progressing

through the game.

Plus, your time won't show up on the leaderboard if you use shortcuts.

Oh, and then there's the game's true ending, where you descend into hell.

This requires you to find a series of items that are hidden in every area.

Meaning that if you use a shortcut to skip an early part of the game, you won't be

able to get all the stuff you need to unlock the secret entrance to the underworld.

And then, finally, there are upgrades that will carry over into the next run - but don't

stick around permanently.

In the tiny tactics game Into the Breach, you can keep one levelled up soldier after

death, who can then be used during your next attempt.

But because these characters don't stick around forever, it's not making a persistent

change to the game's difficulty.

It simply gives you a good reason to have "one more go".

So here's the thing.

A good roguelike is the ultimate test of a player's skill.

The random levels mean you can't rely on memorising level layouts, and permadeath means

you can't rely on accumulating power over time.

You have to play the entire game in one go - and without any real knowledge of what's

around the next corner.

But I would argue that persistent upgrades go against that ideal, and can minimise the

role of player skill - putting much more emphasis on simply how long you've been playing the game.

For some, that slow accumulation of power is enjoyable - if you ask me, it's just

a big ol' grind.

However, the ideas I've shared in this video hopefully show that there are lots of ways

to introduce a sense of progression to roguelike games, without needing to spoil the careful

balance at the very heart of this popular genre.

Now this is ultimately just my opinion.

The Most Important Speeches That Were Never Heard by the Public - Duration: 14:56.

It's good to be prepared.

You never know for sure how a big decision will turn out, so you need to be ready for

anything.

This is especially true if you have to announce a victory or a tragedy to the world; you want

to have a speech ready so you don't resort to freestyle rapping your way through a declaration

of war.

Fate dictated that these speeches not be given, but they would have been well-remembered if

they had.

Wamsutta James Ruins Plymouth's Anniversary Party

Native American activist Wamsutta James was a descendant of the Wampanoags, a tribe that

was living in New England when European maps were still labeling America with "Here be

Dragons."

When he was asked to give a speech at a 1970 event commemorating the anniversary of the

arrival of settlers at Plymouth, he saw a chance to rip apart historical myths that

glossed over how natives were treated by settlers.

Instead of telling the school kids and Pilgrim descendants present what they were expecting

to hear — cute fictions about how buddy-buddy the Pilgrims and Natives were — he would

have spent his entire speech destroying those myths, taking his audience to task for their

ignorance and highlighting the many atrocities his people suffered, after which he presumably

would have dropped the mic and strutted offstage.

"Peace out, you white bitches."

Event organizers didn't like his proposed text and he didn't like their requests for

a rewrite, so James never spoke.

While not as historically significant as the speeches coming up on this list, James'

speech is worth mentioning because it highlights an area of American history that is woefully

overlooked.

It's fittingly ironic that a speech meant to discuss an oft-suppressed historical truth

was prevented from being given.

Also, we have to admire the giant balls it takes to accept an invitation to speak at

an event, and then spend your whole time trashing it.

"We forfeited our country.

Our lands have fallen into the hands of the aggressor.

We have allowed the white man to keep us on our knees.

What has happened cannot be changed, but today we must work towards a more humane America,

a more Indian America, where men and nature once again are important; where the Indian

values of honor, truth, and brotherhood prevail."

Sarah Palin Wins Near the end of the 2008 Presidential election,

tensions between the McCain and Palin camps were so high that McCain's people insisted

that, win or lose, Sarah Palin would not give a speech on Election Night.

Given that Palin had turned into the laughingstock of the campaign, that was probably a wise

decision.

"Was it something I said?"

Palin was a divisive figure both during and after the election, with some voters loving

her and others cringing at the thought of her being a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

When the text of Palin's proposed victory speech was revealed, it was a look into what

could have been (but thankfully wasn't).

As a speech it's decent enough, your typical gracious victory celebration.

But it's the idea behind it that's really interesting — the 2008 election was one

of the closest and most contentious in recent history, and the years that followed it would

have looked awfully different had the result swung the other way.

Regardless of your political beliefs, it's a hell of a thought experiment to take a minute

and wonder what America would have looked like with Sarah Palin in the White House,

and her speech lets you know how that news would have been broken to you.

"It's been just 68 days since that afternoon in Dayton, Ohio, when Senator McCain introduced

me as his running mate.

He is truly the maverick.

He took a chance on me.

I will always be grateful for that.

It will be the honor of a lifetime to work him as vice president of the United States.

And I pledge to govern with integrity, and goodwill, and clear conviction, and a servant's

heart.

My fellow Americans, tens of millions of you shared our convictions and gave us your votes.

And I thank you for your confidence.

We were facing tough odds and formidable opponents."

Albert Lutuli Lectures the Court Albert Lutuli was a key member of the African

National Congress and their struggle against South Africa's apartheid government.

He was arrested in 1960 for burning his pass (an internal passport that all black South

Africans were required to carry and produce on demand), shortly after 69 people were killed

in a protest against the pass system.

"The only thing I hate more than racism is wearing my pants at a reasonable level."

Lutuli was found guilty, fined and given a suspended jail sentence.

He had planned on giving a speech before the sentence was decided, but ultimately refrained

for health reasons.

While today the trial is little more than a footnote in the long story of the anti-apartheid

movement, his proposed speech is an excellent piece of rhetoric that aptly highlights the

many grievances blacks had with the system.

If Lutuli had been able to give it, it may have well been remembered alongside other

famous protest speeches of the era.

"There comes a time, sir, when a leader must give as practical a demonstration of

his convictions and willingness to live up to the demands of the cause, as he expects

of his people.

I felt that was the hour in our history, and in my life, for this demonstration.

I am not sorry nor ashamed of what I did.

I could not have done less than I did and still live with my conscience.

I would rightly lose the confidence of my people, and earn the disrespect of right-thinking

people in my country and in the world, and the disdain of posterity.

In all humility, I say that I acted as was my duty in response to the highest moral law

in the best interest of the people of South Africa, because I am convinced that the urgent

need of our country, for the maintenance of peace and harmony amongst the various races,

black and white, is the immediate and wholesale abolition of the pass.

It is my firm belief that it is the duty of all right-thinking people, black and white,

who have the true interest of our country at heart, to strive for this without flinching."

JFK's Dallas Speech As you are hopefully aware, President Kennedy

was assassinated in Dallas in 1963.

If you weren't aware, you're probably wondering what the magic box you're reading

this list on is.

What you may not know was that Kennedy was on his way to the Dallas Trade Mart, where

he was scheduled to give a speech.

His speech touches on the Cold War, America's role in the world, and the general uneasiness

of the times.

Ironically, parts of the speech attack speaking itself — Kennedy argues that America needs

to act against Communism instead of merely criticizing it.

Some of his words are ominous — promoting financial support for the Vietnam War and

the oppressive Iranian Shah does not look wise in retrospect, and bragging about how

the US has been able to vastly expand its nuclear arsenal is flat-out scary.

"Also, I'm scoring with more celebrities than ever before.

Good night, and God bless America."

Nevertheless, it's a stirring piece of rhetoric that would have done well in the hands of

a skilled orator like Kennedy, and certainly would have been remembered as a snapshot of

the times in which he governed had he lived to deliver it.

"We in this country, in this generation, are — by destiny rather than choice — the

watchmen on the walls of world freedom.

We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may

exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for

all time the ancient vision of "peace on earth, good will toward men."

That must always be our goal, and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength.

For as was written long ago, "except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but

in vain.""

A Regular FDR Speech Would Have Been An Unofficial Goodbye

Speaking of Presidents and dying, FDR had a speech ready to go for Jefferson Day 1945,

before a massive cerebral hemorrhage changed his plans.

Had he lived to give it, it would probably be remembered as a decent but generic speech,

the sort of remarks the President needs to make when there's a war going on.

"The best part about giving speeches over the radio is that I don't have to wear pants."

But with FDR kicking the bucket and World War II ending not long after his death, his

unspoken words serve as an unintentional goodbye to the American people and the world.

They have a poignancy that would be lacking had he lived to speak them, and they make

a fitting eulogy for the end of both the longest Presidency in American history and a historical

era of depression and war.

There's an optimism to the speech, as it looks forward to the time of peace everyone

knows is slowly but surely coming, that is somehow stronger for being given from beyond

the grave (not literally; a zombie FDR giving a speech would be terrifying).

"Today, as we move against the terrible scourge of war—as we go forward toward the

greatest contribution that any generation of human beings can make in this world- the

contribution of lasting peace, I ask you to keep up your faith.

I measure the sound, solid achievement that can be made at this time by the straight edge

of your own confidence and your resolve.

And to you, and to all Americans who dedicate themselves with us to the making of an abiding

peace, I say: The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.

Let us move forward with strong and active faith."

The Cold War Goes Hot The Cuban Missile Crisis ended about as well

as anything called a "missile crisis" could be expected to — the US publicly won

a game of nuclear chicken, the Soviet Union privately achieved a strategic goal by having

US missiles removed from Turkey, and nobody got blown up.

It's the sort of feel good ending that was tailor-made for Hollywood.

Most alternative "solutions" to the Crisis would have ended with shots being fired, and

JFK had a speech ready to go in case he felt it necessary for American boots to hit the

ground in Cuba.

We can't even begin to speculate what the fallout of a military invasion of Cuba would

have been.

At best, American-Soviet relations would have hit an all-time low, and at worst we'd all

be living in Fallout instead of dicking around on the Internet.

On the plus side, it would be a lot cheaper to take vacations to Cuba.

"I'm calling it Operation Bay of Pigs Two: Nuclear Boogaloo."

Anytime you can make a decision where one possible result is "nuclear holocaust,"

you better have a darn good speech up your sleeve, and JFK's remarks are appropriately

somber.

Considering the next words out of his mouth could have been "better duck and cover,

kids!" they damn well should have been.

Excerpt

"My fellow Americans, with a heavy heart, and in necessary fulfillment of my oath of

office, I have ordered – and the United States Air Force has now carried out – military

operations with conventional weapons only, to remove a major nuclear weapons build-up

from the soil of Cuba."

Nixon Doesn't Resign Political super-villain Richard Nixon is famous

for being the only President in American history to resign, but that was actually "Option

B." Had things gone according to plan he would have clung to power, and his Presidency

would have begun to resemble the Nixon Administration from Watchmen.

Or, in a best-case scenario, Futurama.

Nixon's "I'm Sticking Around, Suckers" speech is defiant, although in retrospect

it's also ignorant of the state of affairs, and a little megalomaniacal to boot.

Nixon resigned after realizing the political winds were against him, so it's hard not

to imagine this speech being given from a throne of skulls with lighting and thunder

crackling in the background.

Had Nixon decided to fight public opinion and cling to power, the politics of the day

would have become even uglier in a hurry.

"I firmly believe that I have not committed any act of commission or omission that justifies

removing a duly elected President from office.

If I did believe that I had committed such an act, I would have resigned long ago."

D-Day Goes Downhill As any video gamer can tell you, D-Day was

a tough battle.

History classes tend to gloss over the many ways Operation Overlord could have gone wrong

— anything from a smarter German reaction to lousy weather would have made Saving Private

Ryan a lot more depressing.

General Eisenhower, well aware of the risk he was taking, took a moment on the evening

before the battle to jot down a speech to be read in case of failure.

The speech — actually little more than a brief statement — is chilling in how it

describes what would have been a catastrophic loss of life with clinical detachment.

Damn, Ike's handwriting was terrible.

For all we know this was his grocery list.

How would World War II have turned out if D-Day failed?

Well, by 1944, it was just a matter of time until the Nazis were defeated, but with the

American and British advance in tatters, the Red Army would have had to pick up the slack,

pushing further into Europe than they did in reality.

The end result would have been a much larger Soviet Union and a very different Cold War,

changes that would have reverberated through history up until today.

So jeez, Eisenhower, maybe you should have offered more than 10 seconds of commentary

on the matter.

"Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold

and I have withdrawn the troops.

My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available.

The troops, the air, and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do.

If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone."

Apollo 11 Doesn't Come Home Getting men to the Moon was such a complicated

endeavor that it's easy to forget that we had to get them home, too.

If something broke they couldn't exactly call AAA for help, and considering we're

talking about travelling 384,400 km through the vacuum of space in a little ball of metal

powered by rocket fuel and slide ruler calculations, it's actually remarkable that something

didn't break.

The joy and wonder felt around the world at the sight of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin

walking on the Moon would have been a bit dampened had it then been announced that their

adventure had unexpectedly become a one-way trip.

At least Michael Collins would have had a lot more legroom on the ride back.

Presidential speechwriter William Safire knew the White House had to be ready for anything,

so he prepared a short speech entitled "In the Event of Moon Disaster."

Thankfully it never had to be given, but it's a beautiful piece of prose that would have

served as a fitting tribute to the men lying their lives down for the cause of exploration,

dampened only slightly by the fact that it would have been read by Richard Nixon.

there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind."

Hitler Gets Blown Up As that Tom Cruise movie (and maybe history

class) taught you, in 1944 there was a failed attempt by members of the German Resistance

to assassinate Hitler.

Had the attempt succeeded, Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, one of the conspirators and the

proposed Chancellor of post-Hitler Germany, would have given a fiery radio address denouncing

Hitler and his policies.

Unfortunately, Hitler survived the assassination attempt with everything but his trousers intact,

and Goerdeler and his fellow conspirators were quickly rounded up.

Nearly 5000 people were executed in the aftermath, essentially putting an end to all organised

anti-Nazi resistance within Germany.

But at least they caused serious problems for Hitler's tailor.

It's hard to say what would have happened had the plan succeeded — internal German

politics were complicated, and many of the conspirators still held anti-Semitic views.

But regardless of the details, it's likely that signing a peace treaty would have been

a priority, World War II would have come to an early end in Europe, and there would have

been no Berlin Wall.

But then David Hasselhoff wouldn't have been able to play a concert there, so maybe

it was for the best.

Gaming Journalism - Vlog - 01/18/19 - Duration: 13:09.

So...

I wanted to talk about gaming journalism.

And I'm going to use this term very broadly.

I'm including pretty much everybody that expresses their opinions about gaming on a public landscape.

Why am I talking about it? What made me want to talk about it?

Well, sometime ago I...

exchanged words with another content creator and...

I remember he asked himself once

what was his role in all of this.

What was the role of the "press" inside gaming and what was...

the relationship between the community and the press.

And I told him my opinion about it and the whole thing got me thinking about it.

And I... I wanted to share that with you too.

And the reason for that

is because I think it matters.

I think it helps to give context to the games that we play.

Everybody's got their opinions and they're our opinions, right?

But the moment you decide to talk about them in public, they're no longer just your opinions.

They're out there and they're going to influence other people's opinions. So...

My take on it is that we kinda have a responsibility.

You not only have a responsibility towards what you're actually saying.

You also kind of have a responsibility towards the opportunity that you're given.

Alright. So...

What we have right now.

We have news outlets.

On YouTube you got things like, I dunno, The Know, Pretty Good Gaming.

Outside of YouTube you've got your Kotakus, your EuroGamers.

You have some very talented people doing video essays on YouTube.

Some documentaries... GDC...

You got streamers, theorists, opinion givers...

Lore hunters.

And I have no reason to berate any of it. I think it's good already but I think there's a lot of room for improvement.

First off

We kind of don't have an established body of investigative journalism.

We're a bit dependent on what is leaked.

On what the people involved in the stories are willing to share.

Something I see a lot is, like, "this reddit user found out -found this out." Or...

"This other guy somewhere checked this out."

And then the news outlets, they just aggregate all this information.

And that's fine.

We need that.

But I would like to see a more professionally developed branch of investigative journalism.

That could get out there and uncover stuff to keep us informed about it.

Of course, news outlets that just plain out give you the facts that are out there are also important.

It's a very easily digestible format that can give us a lot of information in a very short time.

Another thing we see a lot are opinion pieces.

And those can be dangerous.

Like, there's a lot of click baity inflammatory opinion pieces out there.

I'm not going to point fingers.

But you all know what I'm talking about probably.

And, sure, fine...

You can have your opinions but like I said you kinda have a responsibility, you know?

Don't be inflammatory for the sake of being inflammatory, just to drive the clicks. Alright?

So, speaking of opinions, this one is going to be very personal.

I get a little frustrated sometimes.

Because it feels like we're content.

With the evolution of games as it stands right now.

If you judge by what's being discussed publicly.

It kinda feels like we're stuck in this mindset. That is rightfully concerned about

the practices of the gaming industry.

And that expects nothing but technical improvements and more of the same.

But the thing is gaming is still in its infancy.

There's a long way to go. People are still figuring out...

How to work with it.

What we can do with games.

And I would like to see more people talking about this particular subject.

Trying to get gamers in this mindset where they expect actual creative evolution.

We see a drive for it coming from the indie side of gaming.

And I don't have a problem with big publishers making big games in order to make big money.

It's a business. They look at it as an investment. Sure, it's fine. I don't care.

But what I'm talking about today is not about the publishers.

It's not about the gaming industry. It's about gaming journalism. It's about the people...

that are shaping the opinions about gaming.

And aside from their concern about the practices of the gaming industry regarding

monetization, regarding social issues...

It feels to me like they're going along with this narrative that "everything is fine."

When they should be helping getting gamers

in this mindset of expecting actual creative evolution from their games.

Not just...

Technical stuff and more of the same.

And one way to go about it, something I think could help.

Would be to have less monologue and more dialogue.

We see a lot of juxtaposing opinions but we don't often see these opinions clashing against each other.

Not in an antagonistic way.

It's not about dividing us, it's about working together.

To shape something better out of it. You know? To learn together.

Praise the sun.

Maybe that's even the heart of everything I'm saying here.

I am not content with the state of gaming journalism in this respect.

I think it's fine what we have right now for what it's worth but I think we need more than that.

I would like to see it being used of more than just analyzing.

And listing bullet points.

I would like to see it being used to help

increase our appreciation for games. And improve the discourse. We need that sorely.

And one last thing.

I think we're kinda stuck in an echo chamber. Echo chamber...

I think we need to reach out to those who are more in need of informed opinions.

To help shape their own.

And I'm talking mostly about "jocks" and mobile gamers.

I personally know people that only play sports games or only play mobile games.

And that's all they know.

They don't have a broad point of reference to judge whether or not they're getting the most out of it.

Whether or not the practices that are being implemented in their games are fair or not.

And let's be honest.

Their opinions are probably the loudest. Those two groups

are probably the most profitable for the gaming industry. And...

They are the ones they're going to listen to.

So, if you want actual, profound change in the gaming industry.

Then you should probably be talking to them. I think it's paramount that we go after this untapped audience.

That could really benefit from an outside perspective.

Okay. That was my rant for the day and... see you around.

Kevin Love Responds to LeBron James-Kyrie Irving Call, Deletes Tweet | Heavy.com

When the news came that Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving had called LeBron James recently to offer an apology of sorts, it opened more than a few eyes.

But what happened from there has quickly led to some questions about the actual situation.

Shortly after the phone call between Irving and James, it to light that Kevin Love was with LeBron around the time of the call.

The Athletic's Joe Vardon posted the original report, but parts of the story have since been denied by Love in a post on social media.

During that same post, the Cleveland Cavaliers forward sent some love to both Irving and James.

The whole situation gets far more interesting when you look into the story a bit, as it cites specific quotes from Love on the situation.

Vardon stated that the forward was with James, Rich Paul, Lynn Merritt, head of Nike Basketball, and multiple others at an "upscale pizzeria in Los Angeles" at the time.

"LeBron looked down at his phone and he showed us," Love told The Athletic, describing the scene.

"He was like, 'I wonder what he wants?'".

In this story, The Athletic writer says James "definitely showed the call history to Love," although he was unsure if the call came at the table or if the Los Angeles Lakers star missed it.

This seems to be what Love wanted to clear up to some extent.

Vardon then revealed a quote from the Cavaliers forward which includes him stating LeBron showed the phone.

"Yeah, I haven't really absorbed all of it yet," Love told The Athletic.

"I was always close with Kyrie, we had a good relationship.

I don't know, I was having some vino and enjoying the night when LeBron showed me the call.".

Kyrie Irving's Apology.

The news of Irving's apology came after the Celtics had defeated the Toronto Raptors Wednesday.

It stemmed from Irving's recent back-and-forth with teammates about Boston's recent struggles.

Following a loss to the Orlando Magic, Keith Smith of Yahoo! Sports quoted Irving stating that the young guys "don't know what it takes to be a championship level team.".

  "The young guys don't know what it takes to be a championship level team.

What it takes every day.

And if they think it is hard now, what do they think it will be like when we're trying to get to the Finals?" Irving stated, per Smith.

It's obviously interesting as these aren't the same exact comments previously made by James about Irving when the two played together with the Cavaliers, but are somewhat similar.

Regardless, it seems Irving had a moment of clarity and best of all, Vardon and The Athletic cited that LeBron was "very appreciative" that the Celtics guard called him.

It's good to be prepared.

You never know for sure how a big decision will turn out, so you need to be ready for

anything.

This is especially true if you have to announce a victory or a tragedy to the world; you want

to have a speech ready so you don't resort to freestyle rapping your way through a declaration

of war.

Fate dictated that these speeches not be given, but they would have been well-remembered if

they had.

Wamsutta James Ruins Plymouth's Anniversary Party

Native American activist Wamsutta James was a descendant of the Wampanoags, a tribe that

was living in New England when European maps were still labeling America with "Here be

Dragons."

When he was asked to give a speech at a 1970 event commemorating the anniversary of the

arrival of settlers at Plymouth, he saw a chance to rip apart historical myths that

glossed over how natives were treated by settlers.

Instead of telling the school kids and Pilgrim descendants present what they were expecting

to hear — cute fictions about how buddy-buddy the Pilgrims and Natives were — he would

have spent his entire speech destroying those myths, taking his audience to task for their

ignorance and highlighting the many atrocities his people suffered, after which he presumably

would have dropped the mic and strutted offstage.

"Peace out, you white bitches."

Event organizers didn't like his proposed text and he didn't like their requests for

a rewrite, so James never spoke.

While not as historically significant as the speeches coming up on this list, James'

speech is worth mentioning because it highlights an area of American history that is woefully

overlooked.

It's fittingly ironic that a speech meant to discuss an oft-suppressed historical truth

was prevented from being given.

Also, we have to admire the giant balls it takes to accept an invitation to speak at

an event, and then spend your whole time trashing it.

What has happened cannot be changed, but today we must work towards a more humane America,

Sarah Palin Wins Near the end of the 2008 Presidential election,

tensions between the McCain and Palin camps were so high that McCain's people insisted

that, win or lose, Sarah Palin would not give a speech on Election Night.

Given that Palin had turned into the laughingstock of the campaign, that was probably a wise

decision.

"Was it something I said?"

Palin was a divisive figure both during and after the election, with some voters loving

her and others cringing at the thought of her being a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

When the text of Palin's proposed victory speech was revealed, it was a look into what

could have been (but thankfully wasn't).

As a speech it's decent enough, your typical gracious victory celebration.

But it's the idea behind it that's really interesting — the 2008 election was one

of the closest and most contentious in recent history, and the years that followed it would

have looked awfully different had the result swung the other way.

Regardless of your political beliefs, it's a hell of a thought experiment to take a minute

and wonder what America would have looked like with Sarah Palin in the White House,

and her speech lets you know how that news would have been broken to you.

me as his running mate.

Albert Lutuli Lectures the Court Albert Lutuli was a key member of the African

National Congress and their struggle against South Africa's apartheid government.

He was arrested in 1960 for burning his pass (an internal passport that all black South

Africans were required to carry and produce on demand), shortly after 69 people were killed

in a protest against the pass system.

"The only thing I hate more than racism is wearing my pants at a reasonable level."

Lutuli was found guilty, fined and given a suspended jail sentence.

He had planned on giving a speech before the sentence was decided, but ultimately refrained

for health reasons.

While today the trial is little more than a footnote in the long story of the anti-apartheid

movement, his proposed speech is an excellent piece of rhetoric that aptly highlights the

many grievances blacks had with the system.

If Lutuli had been able to give it, it may have well been remembered alongside other

famous protest speeches of the era.

"There comes a time, sir, when a leader must give as practical a demonstration of

his convictions and willingness to live up to the demands of the cause, as he expects

of his people.

I felt that was the hour in our history, and in my life, for this demonstration.

I am not sorry nor ashamed of what I did.

I would rightly lose the confidence of my people, and earn the disrespect of right-thinking

people in my country and in the world, and the disdain of posterity.

In all humility, I say that I acted as was my duty in response to the highest moral law

need of our country, for the maintenance of peace and harmony amongst the various races,

black and white, is the immediate and wholesale abolition of the pass.

JFK's Dallas Speech As you are hopefully aware, President Kennedy

was assassinated in Dallas in 1963.

If you weren't aware, you're probably wondering what the magic box you're reading

this list on is.

What you may not know was that Kennedy was on his way to the Dallas Trade Mart, where

he was scheduled to give a speech.

His speech touches on the Cold War, America's role in the world, and the general uneasiness

of the times.

Ironically, parts of the speech attack speaking itself — Kennedy argues that America needs

to act against Communism instead of merely criticizing it.

Some of his words are ominous — promoting financial support for the Vietnam War and

the oppressive Iranian Shah does not look wise in retrospect, and bragging about how

the US has been able to vastly expand its nuclear arsenal is flat-out scary.

"Also, I'm scoring with more celebrities than ever before.

Good night, and God bless America."

Nevertheless, it's a stirring piece of rhetoric that would have done well in the hands of

a skilled orator like Kennedy, and certainly would have been remembered as a snapshot of

the times in which he governed had he lived to deliver it.

"We in this country, in this generation, are — by destiny rather than choice — the

watchmen on the walls of world freedom.

We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may

exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for

all time the ancient vision of "peace on earth, good will toward men."

That must always be our goal, and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength.

For as was written long ago, "except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but

in vain.""

A Regular FDR Speech Would Have Been An Unofficial Goodbye

Speaking of Presidents and dying, FDR had a speech ready to go for Jefferson Day 1945,

before a massive cerebral hemorrhage changed his plans.

Had he lived to give it, it would probably be remembered as a decent but generic speech,

the sort of remarks the President needs to make when there's a war going on.

"The best part about giving speeches over the radio is that I don't have to wear pants."

But with FDR kicking the bucket and World War II ending not long after his death, his

unspoken words serve as an unintentional goodbye to the American people and the world.

They have a poignancy that would be lacking had he lived to speak them, and they make

a fitting eulogy for the end of both the longest Presidency in American history and a historical

era of depression and war.

There's an optimism to the speech, as it looks forward to the time of peace everyone

knows is slowly but surely coming, that is somehow stronger for being given from beyond

the grave (not literally; a zombie FDR giving a speech would be terrifying).

"Today, as we move against the terrible scourge of war—as we go forward toward the

greatest contribution that any generation of human beings can make in this world- the

contribution of lasting peace, I ask you to keep up your faith.

I measure the sound, solid achievement that can be made at this time by the straight edge

of your own confidence and your resolve.

And to you, and to all Americans who dedicate themselves with us to the making of an abiding

peace, I say: The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.

Let us move forward with strong and active faith."

The Cold War Goes Hot The Cuban Missile Crisis ended about as well

as anything called a "missile crisis" could be expected to — the US publicly won

a game of nuclear chicken, the Soviet Union privately achieved a strategic goal by having

US missiles removed from Turkey, and nobody got blown up.

It's the sort of feel good ending that was tailor-made for Hollywood.

Most alternative "solutions" to the Crisis would have ended with shots being fired, and

JFK had a speech ready to go in case he felt it necessary for American boots to hit the

ground in Cuba.

We can't even begin to speculate what the fallout of a military invasion of Cuba would

have been.

At best, American-Soviet relations would have hit an all-time low, and at worst we'd all

be living in Fallout instead of dicking around on the Internet.

On the plus side, it would be a lot cheaper to take vacations to Cuba.

"I'm calling it Operation Bay of Pigs Two: Nuclear Boogaloo."

Anytime you can make a decision where one possible result is "nuclear holocaust,"

you better have a darn good speech up your sleeve, and JFK's remarks are appropriately

somber.

Considering the next words out of his mouth could have been "better duck and cover,

kids!" they damn well should have been.

"My fellow Americans, with a heavy heart, and in necessary fulfillment of my oath of

office, I have ordered – and the United States Air Force has now carried out – military

operations with conventional weapons only, to remove a major nuclear weapons build-up

from the soil of Cuba."

Nixon Doesn't Resign Political super-villain Richard Nixon is famous

for being the only President in American history to resign, but that was actually "Option

B." Had things gone according to plan he would have clung to power, and his Presidency

would have begun to resemble the Nixon Administration from Watchmen.

Or, in a best-case scenario, Futurama.

Nixon's "I'm Sticking Around, Suckers" speech is defiant, although in retrospect

it's also ignorant of the state of affairs, and a little megalomaniacal to boot.

Nixon resigned after realizing the political winds were against him, so it's hard not

to imagine this speech being given from a throne of skulls with lighting and thunder

crackling in the background.

Had Nixon decided to fight public opinion and cling to power, the politics of the day

would have become even uglier in a hurry.

removing a duly elected President from office.

If I did believe that I had committed such an act, I would have resigned long ago."

D-Day Goes Downhill As any video gamer can tell you, D-Day was

a tough battle.

History classes tend to gloss over the many ways Operation Overlord could have gone wrong

— anything from a smarter German reaction to lousy weather would have made Saving Private

Ryan a lot more depressing.

General Eisenhower, well aware of the risk he was taking, took a moment on the evening

before the battle to jot down a speech to be read in case of failure.

The speech — actually little more than a brief statement — is chilling in how it

describes what would have been a catastrophic loss of life with clinical detachment.

Damn, Ike's handwriting was terrible.

For all we know this was his grocery list.

How would World War II have turned out if D-Day failed?

Well, by 1944, it was just a matter of time until the Nazis were defeated, but with the

American and British advance in tatters, the Red Army would have had to pick up the slack,

pushing further into Europe than they did in reality.

The end result would have been a much larger Soviet Union and a very different Cold War,

changes that would have reverberated through history up until today.

So jeez, Eisenhower, maybe you should have offered more than 10 seconds of commentary

on the matter.

and I have withdrawn the troops.

My decision to attack at this time and place was based on the best information available.

The troops, the air, and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do.

Apollo 11 Doesn't Come Home Getting men to the Moon was such a complicated

endeavor that it's easy to forget that we had to get them home, too.

If something broke they couldn't exactly call AAA for help, and considering we're

talking about travelling 384,400 km through the vacuum of space in a little ball of metal

powered by rocket fuel and slide ruler calculations, it's actually remarkable that something

didn't break.

The joy and wonder felt around the world at the sight of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin

walking on the Moon would have been a bit dampened had it then been announced that their

adventure had unexpectedly become a one-way trip.

At least Michael Collins would have had a lot more legroom on the ride back.

Presidential speechwriter William Safire knew the White House had to be ready for anything,

so he prepared a short speech entitled "In the Event of Moon Disaster."

Thankfully it never had to be given, but it's a beautiful piece of prose that would have

served as a fitting tribute to the men lying their lives down for the cause of exploration,

dampened only slightly by the fact that it would have been read by Richard Nixon.

Hitler Gets Blown Up As that Tom Cruise movie (and maybe history

class) taught you, in 1944 there was a failed attempt by members of the German Resistance

to assassinate Hitler.

Had the attempt succeeded, Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, one of the conspirators and the

proposed Chancellor of post-Hitler Germany, would have given a fiery radio address denouncing

Hitler and his policies.

Unfortunately, Hitler survived the assassination attempt with everything but his trousers intact,

and Goerdeler and his fellow conspirators were quickly rounded up.

Nearly 5000 people were executed in the aftermath, essentially putting an end to all organised

anti-Nazi resistance within Germany.

But at least they caused serious problems for Hitler's tailor.

It's hard to say what would have happened had the plan succeeded — internal German

politics were complicated, and many of the conspirators still held anti-Semitic views.

But regardless of the details, it's likely that signing a peace treaty would have been

a priority, World War II would have come to an early end in Europe, and there would have

been no Berlin Wall.

But then David Hasselhoff wouldn't have been able to play a concert there, so maybe

it was for the best.
