Kato: Mr. Hirai, you have been working with engineering development and
we hear that you will be exhibiting a futuristic technology at a large scale exhibition in Tokyo. What will it be about?
Hirai： We are going to present it at Tokyo Big Site.
Since I have been working on cycle of resources,
I am considering to present them dividing into "the three pillars".
First one is a machine that creates water.
Second is training wheel powered generator.
And the last one, it's actually a material called carbon nanohorn,
and I will be create a paste and powder version of it.
I am going to present a technology that makes it possible to create vast amount of them more than
anybody else at the lowest cost, bringing along a sample with me.
Kato: What does it mean to create water from air?
Hirai: Well, to simply put it, you might be able to imagine a dehumidifier,
and utilizing such humidity to create clean water faster than any other way.
Actually, such technologies have been existing for the past few years domestically and internationally...
Kato: Oh! It exists?
Hirai: Yes! There is, but since it's air, dust are created at the same time.
Aren't there times you want to drink the water when you're looking at a dehumidifier?
In the same why, when you use valuable filters,
cleansing the water, and make it drinkable..
By doing so, you would have to conduct business in changing the filters,
and for the users, it would creates large costs or running costs.
Another thing, you would have to clean it very often because if you don't it will get dirty easily
Since it's water.
ince these things do not exist in our current everyday lives,
even if it was introduced to us, there might be complaints against it.
We thought that it didn't become popular due to such reasons, and
so we figured it would be enough to change the filter just once a year.
Kato: That's enough?
Hirai: Yes. We were the only ones who had the idea to filter air itself,
If you filter air itself and clean it, the clean air will become water and therefore it will be clean enough to be drinkable.
In order to filter air, we use carbon nanohorn filter which the particles are fine.
Kato: We don't hear much of carbon nanohorn but, what exactly is it?
Hirai: True. I'm sure most people haven't heard of it before,
but it is a type of carbon which exists the most on earth.
Carbon nanohorn is what is made to be the smallest of size; nano.
The character of this is that it has high electric conductivity,
or as it is carbon, it is stronger than diamond
and it bears heat as well.
Like this, it is a super material.
We use this for our training wheel powered generator efficiently since it is electric.
We will be exhibiting things like that this time.
Kato: You mentioned that you are making water but,
are the carbon nanohorns used on the wheels as well?
Hirai: Yes. Because it is a training wheel, you can attach it to bus, train, car, motorcycle, and it will work.
There is a motor here. It is a very simple structure.
However, when it comes to motors, we have to work on the efficiency
from traditional motors or traditional copper wire.
Those would actually work, but we prefer to find something that has higher efficiency.
If it's gonna run, it's better to generate more electricity.
Also considering safety, the coating of it is very significant
but I won't go into details now.
Some things I have to keep confidential.
But in terms of raising efficiency, we are using this material.
Kato: So then, if any vehicle, an automobile that can move, it can be applied?
Hirai: Yes. Whether it be motorcycles, cars, trains,
they are being used all over the world just to use energy.
If just that, it's such a waste.
The reality that it is a high energy consumption society model.
Realizing that we throw away energies,
we can gather them once again by putting training wheels on the vehicles.
This makes it possible to create recharging cars, recharging motorcycles,
recharging train by charging energies.
We can save the electricities into a battery
and use them at home or work places.
Kato: So for trucks or transportation taxis
or any kind of automobiles, just like an EV
it would move immediately via electricity.
If the battery is recharged, the mileage would grow?
Hirai: That is correct, the weakness of EV is it's short driving distance.
Even if it is a car or a motorcycle on the market
they have to compete with a battery that has been fully charged once.
So, if the battery is big, it will run for a long time,
but it still will eventually run out of battery.
But if there is a sub-battery that charges as it runs,
it will extend the driving distance. It may extend to many times as it is now.
This isn't just about reducing the electric bills.
Many company has been investing huge amount of money to extend the diving distance,
but thinking from a different angle
makes it possible to dramatically extend the driving distance without expense.
Kato: The EV market is currently growing by charging electricity to EV
from an electricity generated by solar panels or nuclear power
were stored to a storage station.
But this makes it possible to charge the car itself by running with
such a compact size battery. Is my image correct?
Hirai: Yes, but what I'm showing you now is a 400 watts motor,
so of course it will only charge 400 watts. There are bigger motors under development.
This could be widely applicable since this motor has a single wheel. If you add 2 of these to your car,
it will simply be doubled. If you add 4 wheels, it will be times 4.
Kato: So it will reduce CO2
and could also approach to the earth environmental issues.
Hirai: Well, all the natural resources are basically in a cycle.
There are no resources that we just use and dump.
Therefore we've placed a machine that creates water into a carry case,
so that it will be able to create 1 resource per person rather than 1 resource per family.
It is important for us to create water myself.
There has been many natural disasters in the world.
People evacuating does not have batteries or water.
Pipelines will crash by an earthquake.
We aim to create to an environment that everyone could place these batteries
to their cars or have it close to themselves and are able to create water from it.
We want everyone to feel that natural resources are in a cycle.
Kato: So an image like a production process of energy becoming compact?
Hirai: Yes. We won't have to build plants or dams or dams to create electricity.
We will be able to create enough electricity or water in our living.

I think that the next generation living culture will become simple and ecological.
