Hello, I'm Regina Stein from Ateliê MariaRê and in this class we'll learn how
to make this cute octupus-shaped pencil topper. Let's do it?
To make this octopus, we'll need Bella's thread, from Pingouin, in the green color number 612,
of a 2.5mm-long crochet needle, of a darning and an embroidery needle,
of pins,
of rows' marker and of black beads.
We'll need balls' embroidery threads in colors black and red
and of silicon fiber for the filling. Let's start the octopus with the green thread
by making a magic ring.
Let's fasten the thread,
and we'll make six single crochets inside this ring.
After this, let's close the ring.
And the first row is done, we've six stitches.
The next row, which will be the second one, will be made in increases,
we'll make an increase over each of these stitches totalizing six increases
and, by the end of the second row, we'll have 12 stitches.
So, we'll make the first increase,
we'll put the row's marker before it.
And we'll keep making an increase over each stitch until the end of the row.
We've finished the second row, the initial thread is already
fastened underneath the stitches, so we can cut it.
And, now, let's make the third row.
It'll have a sequence of three single crochet followed by an increase,
we'll repeat this sequence three times and, by the end of the third row, we'll have 15 stitches.
So, we'll make three single crochets.
Then, an increase.
Once more, three single crochets.
And an increase.
And the last sequence, three single crochets.
And an increase.
Then, we've finished the third row and we've 15 stitches.
In the next rows, from the fourth to the sixth one, we'll make a single crochet over each of
these stitches, we won't make increases nor decreases and we'll keep the 15 stitches.
So, we've made the first stitch, we'll put the marker before it and we'll keep on
making single crochets, a single crochet over each stitch, until the end of the sixth row.
We've finished the sixth row, now let's make the seventh row.
It'll have a sequence of three single crochets followed by a decrease,
we'll repeat this sequence three times and, at the end of the seventh row, we'll have 12 stitches.
So, we'll make three single crochets.
Then,
a decrease.
Once more, three single crochets.
A decrease.
And once more, three single crochets.
And a decrease.
Now we'll make the eighth row, it'll all be done in decreases,
it'll be six decreases and, by the end of the eighth row, we'll have six stitches.
So, we've made the first one.
The second one.
And we'll keep going on like this until the end of the row. The eighth row is done,
now we'll make the ninth one. It'll have a sequence of two single crochets followed by an increase,
we'll repeat this sequence twice and, by the end of the ninth row, we'll have eight stitches.
So we'll make two single crochets.
An increase in the next stitch.
Once more, two single crochets.
An increase.
Now let's stop with the crochet and let's fill this ball.
Let's put the filling here.
We can use the needle's grip to aid us because the opening is narrow.
And we'll keep filling it up until this ball, that is the octopus' head,
gets pretty round but without the stitches bursting out.
The head is filled, now we'll start to make the tentacles.
We'll make
11 chains.
We'll insert the needle in the third chain from the needle,
we'll make a slip stitch.
We'll skip the next chain and make a slip stitch in the next chain.
We'll skip the chain, make a slip stitch in the next chain
and we'll do this until the end, always skipping one.
After that, we'll make a slip stitch on the head,
but we'll make it only over the front handle.
So, we'll make a slip stitch here.
We'll repeat 11 chains.
We'll insert the needle in the third chain, making a slip stitch.
We'll skip the next chain, insert the needle in the next chain and make a slip stitch.
And so until the end of the chains; we skip one, we make a slip stitch,
we skip one, we make a slip stitch.
Now we'll grab the handle in front of the head's stitch
and we'll make
a slip stitch.
Let's keep repeating these tentacles until the end of the row and, when we reach the end,
we'll have eight tentacles.
We've finished the eight tentacles, now we'll make a slip stitch
in the last stitch. Now we'll turn our work around like this
and we'll work on the next row. This one that we've made the tentacles was the tenth row,
the next one, which will be the eleventh one, will be done over these handles that got free.
In the tenth row, we've worked over the front handles and the back handles got free,
we've eight free handles here, we'll make a single crochet over each one.
So, by the end of the eleventh row,
which is this one that we'll start now, we'll have
eight stitches.
So, we'll keep going on like this until the end of the row.
We've finished, then, the eleventh row and we've eight stitches.
In the next rows, from the twelfth until the twenty-first,
we'll make a single crochet over each stitch and we'll keep these eight stitches,
we won't make increases nor decreases. And we'll work in spiral.
So we've made the first stitch.
So, let's keep going on like this, by making a single crochet over each stitch
keeping the eight stitches, until the end of the twenty-first row.
We've finished the twenty-first row, now let's make the twenty-second row.
It'll be made with slip stitches, we'll keep the number of stitches,
it'll be eight stitches, but now they'll be slip stitches. So, the first one is done.
And the second one. Let's put the marker in the first stitch here.
And we'll keep on by making slip stitches until the end of the row. We've reached the end,
this was our last row, the thread is already cut.
We've pulled the thread, now we'll pass it by a darning needle.
Since this opening is narrow, we won't be able to turn it around,
we'll pass the thread underneath the stitches through the front,
carefully so it won't show up.
And now we can cut it.
Now, we'll make the octopus' face.
Let's make a marking here with pins, counting four rows
and the two pins separated by a hole here.
Let's pass this black ball's embroidery thread
through a tipped needle, folded like this, forming a handle.
Let's fasten this handle here in the first marking.
And sew a black bead here.
Let's get it well fastened.
Let's pass to the other marking, here, where the other pin is.
And let's sew the second bead here. Both eyes are stitched, we'll tie up the thread.
And we'll leave it at any point inside the head.
Now, just cut it.
Now, let's make the mouth with the red thread.
We'll use red ball's embroidery thread, a kinkle at the tip and a tipped needle.
Let's fasten this kinkle through the back here.
When I pass the needle here, I'm picking the back stitch up
so that the kinkle get fasten back there.
Like this.
We'll make a stitch here.
Let's leave this stitch a little loose,
let's insert the needle downward.
Let's pick both stitches up, both stitches that we've made here, both threads,
pass them underneath and pull it here.
So, we'll make the finish
down here because we don't have anywhere else to finish this thread up.
Let's make a pretty small finish here
and leave the thread inside the head.
It's gone.
The octopus is done, now we'll put it on the pencil.
Our octopus topper is done. If you think this part that gets fastened on the pencil
is too long, you can make less rows.
Like this, it gets pretty tight and it won't escape from the pencil,
but if you prefer, you can decrease the number of rows.
