Hi Welcome back to the Eats of Taipei Today we're getting out of the city and
going to Danshui to visit a special little British restaurant called Brit Shake,
which is owned by Chef Amy and Alex. Hi Amy. Hello, good to see you again.
The last time we met you had a jacket potato stand in Gongguan.
Yes, that was about 2 or 3 years ago. So what's happened since then?
Since then the business started to go quite well. They seemed to really like the
jacket potatoes and milkshakes, so we saved up some money from there, and we moved to
Danshui. We chose Danshui because we both really like it. It's kind of a seaside
town. And then we started selling fish and chips and
takeaway food. We had jacket potatoes and fish pie. Yes I remember the jacket potatoes.
You had several fillings. The best one was
the Coronation chicken. It's curry flavor with chicken. It goes really well. So after
that, business was going really well. We decided
that we needed more space. Yes, this is
really spacious. For me, I really want customers to come and enjoy and relax while they're
eating not just quickly eat and go. I think that's
what we do in England as well. We relax, we eat, we chat
So what I notice about this place is the lovely decor
Thank you very much. How did this come about?
And who did the decor? I went home and I researched a few coffee shops in England. I came back
and I gave the guy who does our art a few ideas.
He did it himself. We've got Big Ben, the Underground
All from his own head. This reminds me of Land's End
in Cornwall. Here we see Lincoln. We've got Lincoln.
London, Britshake, and Danshui. That's excellent Thank you. You have a very British atmosphere and
it's really well done. Thank you very much
I really appreciate that.
So Amy, this is your fish and chips. It looks great
to me. Can you just go through what you have on
it. So first we'll start with the chips. We cut them all
by hand. Peel and cut the potatoes. And then we fry
them. They're all really fresh. For the fish we use beer
batter. It's Boddington's beer batter and it's fresh
everyday. The fish we use is cod. We've got hake and
cod. I actually prefer cod. What about yourself? I'm not a fish expert. Normally it's cod though
I think. So what have you got in the little bowls?
This is homemade tartar sauce and this is mushy peas
And also a side salad and things. They seem to go
really well. I've got your menu here. So that's the
popular dish? That's our most popular. People come
here just for fish and chips. I'm surprised about
that. I wouldn't have thought that British food
would be popular in Taiwan. Definitely. For a
starter, when I came here I was worried about
that. That's why we opened the shop in Gongguan. To test the market. Obviously now
more people are trying fish and chips and they
really like it. So I'm really pleased about that
But surely your chefs can't cook British food. Yes I've been asked this question. How do
I get my chefs to cook like a British person? So
we got a few chefs from a Kaohsiung culinary school.
So they're trained in European cuisine, so they know
a little about British food. So I've kept teaching
them and teaching them how the tastes are different
from European tastes. So would you call your menu
British food with a Taiwan slant? A little. We haven't
changed the dishes but we have changed the saltiness
or the sweetness of the dishes. What I normally do
is give my staff things to try first. And they'll
give their impression or opinion. So we can cater to
the saltiness or sweetness of Taiwanese. I thought Taiwanese
people liked really sweet food. I think the southern
Taiwanese really like sweet more than people in Taipei.
Banoffee pie for example. At first no one would touch
it. We had to make it less sweet. So we've got fish
and chips here, and that looks lovely. So what are your
other main foods? We have fish pie and cottage pie.
What is cottage pie? Cottage pie is chunks of
beef. Normally in England we use mince, but here
we finely cut high quality beef and it's marinated
in red wine and cooked for a long time. Kind of
like a stew. On top we have mashed potatoes and
cheese on top and it's baked for about 20 minutes
I love tomato soup. Yours says British tomato soup
So what's the British element? So basically I make it
the way my mum taught me. That's the only thing
on the menu that I didn't learn at school. I think it's
a little bit thicker than most soups. These are great
fish and chips. They're very authentic. Certainly you
can get something like this in England and these are
better that what you can get in England to be honest
OK Amy, I'm looking at your drinks menu now. Fortnum and Mason, wow very posh. Fortnum
and Mason in England sells very well. Our best seller
here is our royal blend. OK and what is royal blend?
Is it a bit like Earl Grey? It's kind of a mixture
of Earl Grey and red tea. It's quite fragrant but not too
powerful. You mean the black tea? Yes, yes red tea in
Chinese. This one goes really well. I like Fortnum
and Mason because it has real flavour to it. Sometimes
when you brew the tea a second time it still has a
lot of taste. So this is actual tea not tea bags? Yes we
use the actual tea and put it into our own tea bags.
When I think of Fortnum and Mason in London, I think
about the afternoon tea and the tiered...
So this is your afternoon tea set and I see you have
three different tiers. So should we talk about the
top tier. Sure, here we have homemade scones. We
do those freshly every day. We have cranberry flavour
and here we have homemade jam and clotted
cream. And we've also got butter as well. Scones
are very popular in England. I come from Cornwall and we have Cornish cream tea. It
looks very similar. Now on the second tier we have
a little Christmas tree. We have it because
it's Christmas. This is banoffee pie, which is
from London. Banoffee pie came about in a pub
just outside of Essex. The bottom is toffee and then fresh bananas and cream on top. So
it's salty and sweet all in one mouthful. On
the bottom tier I usually see little finger
sandwiches but this looks a little bit different So here we have jamon and pineapple.
Jamon is quite popular in the UK. It's kind of
like a ham. And we've also got tuna and Bolognese here. Like you said, in England,
we usually have cute little finger sandwiches, but for me personally, when
I see this it looks more appealing. Like I really want to eat it, so I've changed it
here for people to eat with their eyes. So this
is your afternoon tea set. What time is
afternoon tea? Or is it all day? Normally it's from 2pm until 6pm and also we give you
two free teas as well, which are refilled,
and it's all Fortnum and Mason tea. Wow that's amazing! You said the royal blend
is the most popular. Yes it sells really well. Do you do Earl Grey? We do. That
might be my favorite. I really like Earl Grey as well.
That's also Fortnum and Mason. And that sells really well. With women they seem
to like the rose tea and the fruit teas. So
we have a big selection of tea. So you mentioned
Fortnum and Mason. Is that the only tea you do? Or do you do other teas as well?
Next month we're going to start offering Whittard tea which is also a favorite of mine
in England. So in January we're going to start that. I remember seeing Whittard in
Covent Garden. That's right. They have a big shop
there. That tea I also like because it's not
a strong flavor but it's really nice and it suits
afternoon tea. I just really love my teas and
you have all my favorite brands. The Twinings, the Fortnum and Mason, the Whittard. We're
British, aren't we? We love our teas. We're just finishing up at Britshake. We've
had a fantastic time. We've learned a lot about
the food here and Amy has been really helpful.
I'm just going to finish off with this lovely
milkshake. It's called Bananarama. It's bananas and chocolate. I'm really going
to enjoy it. Bye for now
We've had a great time at Britshake today. Amy
and her team have really taken good care of us. Make sure to stop in at Britshake
the next time you visit Danshui. Thanks
for watching. I hope you've enjoyed the video.
We'll see you again soon on the Eats of Taipei.
