In climate change science, policy, and carbon management, the term "carbon dioxide equivalent"
or "C.O.2.e" is used by experts and policy makers a lot.
So, what does it mean?
Before we answer that, let's consider an analogy:
Imagine you get home from a round-the-world holiday, and at the bottom of your bag you
find one U.S dollar, 1000 Indian rupees, and 100 euros.
What is the combined value of this money?
Obviously, you can't add the three different currencies together.
So you first convert all three values into a common denomination - let's say, U.S dollars
- using exchange rates.
Then they can be summed together to give a single value.
This same idea applies to greenhouse gases.
There are many gases that have a global warming impact, including carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride, perfluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons.
These are emitted by both natural and anthropogenic sources.
Anthropogenic sources include fossil fuel combustion - for example, in cars - agriculture,
landfills and air conditioners, among others.
Each greenhouse gas traps heat in the atmosphere at different rates, and they also have different
atmospheric lifetimes.
For example, methane has a lifetime of around twelve years, while nitrous oxide stays in
the atmosphere for ten times longer, at 121 years.
This leaves us with the classic problem of comparing "apples to oranges".
In order to make meaningful comparisons between different gases, and calculate their combined
global warming effect we need to come up with a common unit of measurement.
The same way we converted all our currencies into US Dollars, we convert all of our greenhouse
gas emissions into one common unit: "tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent", which is
commonly expressed as tonnes of CO2e.
Essentially, scientists use carbon dioxide as a benchmark for measuring the heat-trapping
ability of other greenhouse gases.
To convert the other greenhouse gases into carbon dioxide equivalents, we multiply the
mass of emissions by the appropriate "global warming potential", or "G.W.P".
"Global Warming Potential" represents the relative warming effect of a unit mass
of the gas when compared with the same mass of carbon dioxide over a specific time period.
This is commonly 20 or 100 years.
Specifying the time period is important, to address the different atmospheric lifetimes
of the different greenhouse gases.
Global warming potentials are published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
and recognised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Here you can see the Global Warming Potentials of several gases for a 100-year time period.
Methane, for example, has a Global Warming Potential of 28.
That means one tonne of methane is equivalent to 28 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
So if 1,000 tonnes of methane are generated annually by a landfill site, this is equal
to 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, or "CO2e".
We've established that not all greenhouse gases are created equal.
But, by using "tonnes of CO2e", we have a common unit that we can use.
This allows us to measure and compare different greenhouse gases, and understand their combined
impact on climate change.

The Undertaker's streak is one of the, if not the biggest compiling of repeated big
match wins in the history of professional wrestling.
So, to be blunt, it means a lot just for a superstar to be in the ring with with Taker,
let alone have the opportunity to possibly come out on top and forever etch your name
in history.
My name is John, and these are 10 wrestlers who could face The Undertaker at WrestleMania.
Undertaker and Goldberg came face to face with one another at this past Royal Rumble,
and their confrontation ended with the Deadman eliminating Goldberg not even a minute after
he had entered the ring.
This means that Goldberg could have a spear and a jackhammer ready to deliver to the Undertaker
at the grandest stage of them all.
One could argue that there will still be unfinished business between The Undertaker and Brock
Lesnar.
The Beast defeated Taker's Wrestlemania streak, so it only would make sense for the
deadman to want a rematch on the grandest stage of them all.
Undertaker had a match against Lesnar in what he calls "his yard" at Wrestlemania.
Well why not have this WrestleMania rematch take place inside Hell in a Cell, Undertaker's
house?
Brock Lesnar could even become the first competitor to beat Taker at Wrestlemania twice.
The demon king squaring off against the phenom would not only be a dream match come true,
but it would be a great way to get Finn Balor more exposure and establish him on the main
roster.
With Finn being forced to vacate the Universal championship due to injury, a win over The
Undertaker at Wrestlemania would be an achievement maybe even more prestigious than winning a
world title.
Oh yes, the big dog, Roman Reigns.
When Vince McMahon said that he would reconsider a new opponent to replace John Cena in facing
The Undertaker, many fans speculated that he was talking about Roman.
After all, he said he wanted to have a match that would benefit the future of the company,
and whether anyone likes it or not, Roman is the future.
On a positive note, Reigns facing off against the deadman will be the first time in two
years that Roman won't be challenging for a world title at Mania.
No one seems to be talking about the possibility of Sami Zayn going one on one with the phenom,
and this makes sense seeing as though Zayn doesn't have much of a reason to face Taker.
However, this would be a great way to continue to advertise Sami as an underdog against a
force like The Undertaker, and this would really put Sami in a great position to take
out a legend in this industry.
This would also give him an accomplishment to hold over his former best friend, Kevin
Owens.
With reports claiming that Kevin Owens will not be walking into Wrestlemania with the
Universal championship on his shoulder, many people assume that he will go one on one with
Chris Jericho for the United States championship.
However, KO could keep Jericho by his side heading into Wrestlemania to challenge Taker.
This would give Owens something else to brag about to other competitors and would make
for an epic dream match for the fans.
John Cena versus The Undertaker at Wrestlemania has been a match that Vince McMahon has been
trying to pull off for a long time now.
He was very close to getting the deal sealed, until he was convinced otherwise.
The original rumor was that Taker and Cena would battle in a title versus career match,
and seeing as though the cenation leader has the WWE championship around his waist, this
very well could still be in the works.
The phenom versus the phenomenal one.
It just seems like AJ Styles versus The Undertaker is meant to happen.
It sounds like a prophecy that one day these two will clash in the ring.
Styles had an exceptional 2016 and even beat John Cena on three separate pay per views.
With Cena now proving that he has what it takes to hang with the champ who runs the
camp, it's seems appropriate for Styles to get another win to prove he still belongs.
But I think it's safe to say that a win over The Undertaker would do more than prove
that he belongs in the WWE.
It looked as though WWE had big plans for Samoa Joe to face off against Seth Rollins,
but the odds of having Rollins compete against Joe or even at Wrestlemania have taken a blow.
With that in mind, having Joe go up against the Undertaker would be a fantastic way to
showcase The Destroyer Samoa Joe by having him finish off The Undertaker's streak.
Alright so we've got some honorable mentions, please don't hate me for not including these
people on the list: Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, and Dean Ambrose.
Baron Corbin is treated as main event level talent by the general managers of Smackdown
Live.
While he has proven his worth by decimating top tier competitors on the blue brand, he
still really only had the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on his WWE resume.
It would be a great way to further instill fear into the eyes that come face to face
with the Lone Wolf by having him beat the Undertaker down and force him to pass the
torch.
