Youtube daily report Oct 7 2018

To finish off the /t/ sound,

let's look at the rules of saying a /d/ sound instead of the /t/ sound

in American English.

Actually, the /t/ will change into what's called a flap /t/,

and not exactly a /d/,

but for our purposes here, it is perfectly fine to say that the /t/ changes to a /d/.

The first general rule is that

the /t/ only changes to /d/ in American English and sometimes in Australian English

and people speaking with a British accent usually don't flap their /t/ sounds.

The second general rule is that

we do NOT change the /t/ to a /d/ when the /t/ is at the beginning of a stressed syllable in a word.

OK, after the general rules, now let's see the specific rules.

To make this lesson easier,

I have made some simplification to the rules,

because I would like to focus on the most common cases.

Rule #1: The /t/ changes to a /d/ if it is between two vowels, such as in:

But the /t/ does NOT change in "hotel" or "guitar",

because here the /t/ is at the beginning of a stressed syllable,

so it must be pronounced strong, as we discussed it earlier.

Rule #2: The /t/ changes to a /d/ if it is between an /R/ sound and a vowel, such as in:

But the /t/ does NOT change in "thirteen" or "fourteen",

because here the /t/ is at the beginning of a stressed syllable,

so it must be pronounced strong, as we discussed it earlier.

Rule #3: The /t/ changes to a /d/ if it is between a vowel and a /L/ sound

(usually at the end of words), such as in:
