Improvising on the guitar : what should you think about ?

Hi ! In this video I'll show you different things you can think about when you improvise, in order to create contrasts in your playing

when musicians improvise, they can think about many different things, and it varies a lot from one musician to the other

some musicians may think about the main scale of a tune

other musicians may instinctively sing melody without caring about the key and play them on the guitar

some other may think in terms of licks they will be able to play over some chords

so each musician has its own way of thinking, but what's certain is...

you must think about something ! Try not to play without thinking about anything or by just letting your fingers move

instead, try to have some idea of the kind of sound you want to bring with your guitar

it can be a picture, a story, a lick, anything

if I do this video, it's because I had students who where unhappy with their playing

so I played with them, and after their solo I asked "can you tell me roughly what you did ?"

and they were unable to say what they played, because they mostly played by reflex

so beeing used to think about different ideas or concepts when improvising is extremely useful and will help you vary your playing

now, let's name one by one different ideas you can think about when you improvise :

and let's use the Bb major scale, because I'll improvise on Perdido later

first idea : thinking and playing a scale ! And creating melodies with its notes

so this is something you can think about : a scale ! A group of 7 notes (usually)

another idea : arpeggios ! I can play all the arpeggios of the Bb major scale

so I can stay a few seconds on an arpeggio (EbMaj7 here)

and then switch to another one (BbMaj7)

and it can also be an arpeggio out of the scale : to suggest the F altered scale I can play the Gbm arpeggio

this is a tip I explained in the video "Perdido" (french) but also in the video on Youtube "playing Fm over E7"

so I will play this Gbm over a F7 chord

so this was the idea of arpeggiating a chord, a group of 3 or 4 notes

3rd idea : following a pattern on the guitar neck, a "path"

let's take this one for example : F7 9 13

(here is the root)

let's play it with one finger to make it easier to visualize :

so I can use this pattern as a guide to create melodies. Examples :

the first line was "preceding each note with the note below"

then "with the 2 notes higher"

whatever the melody is the idea is to follow this path, that I have transcribed from some other musician or that I have created

and it's a great way to personnalize your playing

4th idea : a target note

let's play again the Bb major scale

something that I love to do on this major scale, is to sometimes play a minor 3rd ! And to combine it with other notes

so this m3 is my target note

if I want to suggest a minor IV chord (minor plagal cadence) I'll play a Gb

these where 2 examples of target notes of the Bb major scale

5th idea : "thinking rhythmically"

I can repeat a rhythm for example

and if during my solo I didn't stop playing eight notes

I can break this monotony by playing different rhythms, like fast separated lines

and i can exagerate the silence between the lines

so I think in terms of rhythm and "filling the time" : when do I play sounds, when don't I

instead of playing a discontinuous flow of notes

so this was "thinkink rhythmically"

6th idea : licks !!

this is a lick I like to play

this is a pretty common way of thinking improv in gypsy jazz

for any kind of music, learning to play the clichés is a great way of getting into the style

7th idea, a much more conceptual way of thinking :

a story ! We can think our solo is a story we tell

in a story, there are characters, with actions, personnalities, different chapters in the story

thinking narratively will help use creating licks, repeating them, making them interract with other ideas (just like characters do)

so the purpose of this video is to make you realize that varying the way you conceptualize your improv helps greatly creating contrasts in your playing

now I'll improvise on Perdido, and what I think about will be displayed on the screen

repeating a rhythmic idea

chromaticisms with a static high note

chromaticisms and enclosures

tritones on upbeats

diatonic melodies (Bb major scale)

lick !

diatonic arpeggios

Abm

as a conclusion : what I just explained is not very hard to understand. You maybe already thought about it

but when we improvise it can be really hard :

I see a lot of pretty good players, playing over the changes easily, but playing always the same way (uninterrupted eight notes usually)

because they don't dare to change their way of thinking their improv

they just play instincively without trying to brake the monotony of it

and it's mostly this that makes contrasts in an improvisation

so what's difficult is to think about it, and to DARE to do it !

DARING to do it is hard, but it's really important, and very rewarding

Biréli Lagrène is a great guitar player, and a master in daring to break the monotony of a solo

he gets quickly bored with conventional things and he likes to experiment with new sounds on the guitar

and it's not because he plays on a stage that he won't dare

and this is what his audience likes in his playing : surprises !

so think different ways when you play, and... Dare to do it !
