Episode 3: "Let's Walk from Stress to Bliss" - a non-fiction web series - Duration: 12:43.

Hi!

I'm Ashish Lal and this is the very beautiful Aksa beach in Mumbai.

Welcome to the 3rd episode of "Let's Walk from Stress to Bliss".

In this episode, we'll work on physiological aspects to deal with psychological stress.

We'll talk about 3 things

Whenever you exercise, your body releases

endorphins, a "happy hormone", that makes you feel happy.

You must have heard of "runner's high", which is a "euphoric" feeling that a runner

has after his run.

Do body weight exercises, swimming, outdoor sports, weight training, martial arts, Yoga,

cycling, brisk walking, jogging, running, dancing or whichever form of physical exercise

you love to do so that you can keep doing it for a long period of time.

For last 8 years I've been doing weight-training exercises with free weights and machines,

mostly at the gym and sometimes at home.

I've also been doing freehand exercises frequently at home or the gym.

However, my true love is Yoga.

Many don't know that Yoga comprises not just asanas i.e. different postures but also

Dhyan means meditation.

For last 17 years, I've been regularly doing Yoga, primarily some of the

Pranayamas, Asanas and Dhyan.

They have a very powerful effect on our body, mind and soul.

Though all exercises have powerful positive impact on curbing stress, there are some Pranayamas

that are powerful beyond imagination in combating stress.

Pranayamas directly impact your mind in an extremely positive way.

Sometimes, in just a few weeks, it can cure mild or moderate depression that months of

medication cannot do.

For all Pranayamas, sit in a comfortable posture with your back straight.

Your neck should also be straight and eyes closed.

Even with eyes closed, your virtual line of vision should be parallel to the ground –

not looking down or up.

Have a gentle smile on your face.

Never move any part of your body other than those you're working on – a Pranayama

is an internal exercise, not an external one.

Shaking or moving shoulders, neck, head is wrong – they should be absolutely still.

Also, take rest in between when needed.

Never do more than your comfort level, which will increase with time and practice.

Take a deep breath in calmly, with both the nostrils, without exerting

any force.

After that with a little force, throw the air out with both the nose.

Again, inhale calmly and exhale with a little force.

You can do this at slow, medium and fast pace or a mix of all three.

For example, you can do 20 times slow, 30 times medium and 50 times fast or you can

do any one 100 times.

All are beneficial.

With your right thumb, close your right nostril.

Inhale very slowly from your left nostril.

Then, close your left nostril using middle and ring finger.

Now exhale slowly and then inhale slowly from the same right nostril.

Now close your right nostril with your thumb and then exhale slowly first and then inhale

slowly, both from the same left nostril.

This is one round.

Nadi Shodhan Pranayama has 4 stages depending upon how long you

exhale, hold, inhale and hold.

However, for beginners, let's keep it simple – keep the duration of exhalation and inhalation

the same.

Also, the breath should be so slow and smooth that if a small piece of cotton is kept below

the nostrils, it should not shake at all because of inhalation or exhalation.

Close both your ears with your right and left index fingers.

Take a very slow and deep breath in.

Then keeping your mouth shut, make a humming sound something like this as long

as you comfortably can.

Hmmmmmmm...

Now again take a very slow deep breath in, make a humming sound and so on and so forth.

In the end, lie down in Shavasana, the corpse pose, for about 5 to 10 minutes with a smile

on your face and just witness the sensations created

by these powerful Pranayamas in your body.

Witness from toe to head and back from head to toe.

Repeat this till the sensations normalize.

Note that from the 1st Pranayama, do not open your eyes even once till the time you're

done with Shavasana when you need to sit down and open your eyes slowly.

Pranayamas need to be done 3-4 hours after a heavy meal and 1-2 hours after a light meal.

If you want to do the exercises you love along with these Pranayamas, the entire physical

activity session should end with these Pranayamas and not the other way around.

It might take hours of lecture if we want

to talk about what and how to eat, but we'll keep it short.

Understand one thing – we're all natural beings.

The more natural stuff we can eat, the better it is for our

physical, mental and spiritual health.

Try to avoid fast food, oily, sugary and packed items as much as possible.

Try to eat home cooked food in minimal oil.

Also, you should never feel hungry for more than 5 minutes or so.

Eat either before you feel hungry or the moment you feel that hunger pang in your stomach.

Tolerating hunger doesn't just make you weak and prone to several diseases, it also

makes you gain more fat over time.

Eat small meals and preferably at regular intervals of time –

may be every 3 hours or so.

Many people start eating too many sugary items saying that they release endorphins and make

you feel happy instantly.

Yes, some of them do, but only for some time.

Also, they cause a lot of harm.

There are much healthier things to eat to release endorphins – banana, strawberries,

oranges, nuts, grapes, sesame seeds etc.

More than what to eat or drink, it is important to discuss what not to eat or drink.

Most people, when stressed, do too much of smoking, drinking or drugs.

You feel relaxed when you're in their effect, but after the effect is gone,

the stress comes back manifolds.

These things just mess with your intellect and because you cannot think those compulsive

stressful thoughts in that state, you feel good but only for a while.

I've never ever even tasted cigarettes, alcohol, drugs or for that matter any intoxicant

whatsoever, but I've learnt to achieve a far more prolonged state of calm through

age old permanent and powerful ways.

We shall discuss them in our last episode.

Let's try avoiding short cuts that can short-circuit anytime;

instead, let's try taking the right path even if it is longer.

Longer and permanent is better than shorter and temporary.

First things first – after a lot of research, it has been found that

Depressed people either sleep very less or sleep a lot.

For those who cannot sleep early, I always say that at least

Most people who are depressed, stressed or anxious,

face this problem of not being able to sleep quickly.

In the 1st episode, I had mentioned that during my depressed phase, I used to take about

1.5 to 3.5 hours to sleep after going to bed, but now it takes only about 10 minutes.

A form of meditation has helped me make such a drastic transformation.

You can also follow it to gain its benefits.

When you go to bed, lie down in Shavasana on your back with hands on the sides

and palms facing the sky.

This is a meditation technique and not a Pranayama.

In Pranayamas you alter how you breathe to have a positive impact.

Here you do not alter the breath at all.

You just witness the breath as it comes and goes.

Your consciousness should flow with the breath – breath goes in, there's a pause, then

it comes out and then there's a pause – count 1 in your mind.

Then again the breath comes in, pause, goes out, pause – count 2.

Focus should not be on counting which should be automatic.

Focus should be on going in and out literally along with the breath.

Don't just see the breath, flow along with it.

Do not try to take deep breaths or shallow breaths, do not try to feel good or bad about

the breath – as the breath comes in and goes out,

just witness it without any reaction whatsoever to it.

Suppose at the count of 18, your focus shifts to thoughts.

When you realize it, do not try to stop them.

Mind cannot focus on two things at the same time.

So just bring your focus back on the breath and flow with it, and immediately the thoughts

will drop on its own.

Now start your count from 19.

After a while, you won't even realize, your body and mind will get so relaxed that you'll

fall into a deep sleep.

Practice this meditation till you fall asleep.

Suppose you wake up at night and again have difficulty in sleeping, practice this meditation

again.

Your body needs sleep because it needs 'rest'.

This meditation has that 'resting' effect as well.

Hence, even if your count goes till 300 or 500 or even more, before you fall asleep,

it's not a waste of time – it's adding to your rest.

It's very a good idea to consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

I have always been open to this idea,

but, primarily because Pranayamas and Meditation, I could handle the situation mostly myself.

I've never had to take a sleeping pill or any medicine prescribed to a depressed patient.

If you follow every suggestion given in this series,

probably you'll also never need to have them.

Oscar nominee Casey Affleck slams circuses for animal cruelty - Duration: 1:50.

Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck is starring in a new production — to speak out against animal cruelty within circuses.

The "Manchester by the Sea" star — who is up for best actor at this Sunday's award show — teamed up with PETA for a chilling new video that urges people to stop attending circuses due to their alleged mistreatment of big cats like lions and tigers.

"This industry tears families apart and subjects individuals to a life of torment and deprivation," Affleck says in the nearly two-minute clip.

"(Trainers) drag the big cats around by heavy chains or ropes around their necks and hit them with sticks, poles, and whips," he continued. "They beat them mercilessly and bully them into jumping through hoops."

Casey Affleck spoke out against the alleged mistreatment of animals in circuses in a new video for PETA.

The clip included footage of the hulking animals being escorted around in caged carts, as well as a particularly jarring scene showing a trembling lion cub in distress.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus, which PETA specifically named in a press release Thursday, is ending its 146-year-run this May. The traveling show is set to begin a 9-day stint at Brooklyn's Barclays Center tonight.

But PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, contends other shows continue to "exploit big cats" - an issue that clearly bothers Affleck.

"I choose to work in the entertainment industry, but animals in circuses and other traveling shows are never given a choice," he says in the video.

The video marks Affleck's second collaboration with PETA this year, as he also joined forces with the animal rights group earlier this month to release a video encouraging canine owners to bring their "outside dogs" into their homes during the cold winter months.

Florida cop and police chief charged for woman's accidental shooting death in training exercise - Duration: 2:13.

The Florida police officer who accidentally shot and killed a retired school librarian in a firing exercise last year has been charged with felony manslaughter, authorities announced Wednesday.

The charge against Punta Gorda Lee Coel comes more than six months after 73-year-old Mary Knowlton died in the training activity gone wrong. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis was also hit with a misdemeanor charge for culpable negligence, and faces up to 60 days in jail.

Florida State Attorney Steven Russell told reporters he met with Knowlton's husband and "advised his counsel that we are moving forward on this case."

"The Knowlton family is dealing with a tremendous loss, and we wanted to make sure they are informed," Russell said.

But he did not reveal what led to the charges, and the Knowlton family did not immediately comment.

The cop's attorney, Jerry Berry, said the charge came as a surprise.

"Lee Coel absolutely, positively did not know there was ammunition in that gun," Berry told reporters, adding that he expected to beat the charge.

Multiple witnesses tell NBC2 the officer involved in the shooting was Officer Lee Coel.

Knowlton and her husband Gary Knowlton, who had retired to Punta Gorda, joined about 30 other students in a Citizens Academy training session at police headquarters in August 2016.

Knowlton was randomly selected for a "shoot/don't shoot" exercise, in which she played a cop and Coel portrayed a "bad guy" with a gun.

But in what Lewis later called "a horrible accident," a live round ended up in the gun — and then in Knowlton's body.

Her family agreed in October to a settlement of more than $2 million from the city, which as part of the agreement denied any wrongdoing.

Knowlton's widower appeared willing to forgive Coel, telling a local TV station days after the shooting that there "was no ill intent" in the fatal firing.

Coel has served on the force for two years. A lawsuit from a man he arrested accused Coel of letting his K-9 chomp the man's leg for two minutes after pulling him over for driving without a headlight. The suit led to earlier excessive force complaints against Coel coming to light, but he was ultimately cleared and remained on the job.

Coel left jail Wednesday on $5,000 bail.

Exoplanet discovery: Seven Earth-size exoplanets may have water

A nearby star has seven temperate Earth-size planets within a stone's throw of each other – each offering its own chance for atmospheres, oceans and life to emerge. The exoplanet discovery suggests such Russian-doll systems of nested small worlds may be common, and perhaps the best places in our galaxy to look for life.

We already knew that TRAPPIST-1, a small, faint star some 40 light years away, was special. In May 2016, a team led by Michaël Gillon at Belgium's University of Liege announced it was closely orbited by three planets that are probably rocky: TRAPPIST-1b, c and d.

That was enough to catapult TRAPPIST-1 into the top tier of places we might search for life in the next few years. But the system had more to offer.

Each planet had been discovered when it transited in front of its star, blocking some light and causing the TRAPPIST-1 system to wink in brightness. As the team kept watching shadow after shadow cross the star, three planets no longer seemed like enough to explain the pattern. "At some point we could not make sense of all these transits," Gillon says.

Now, after using the space-based Spitzer telescope to stare at the system for almost three weeks straight, Gillon and his team have solved the problem: TRAPPIST-1 has four more planets.

The planets closest to the star, TRAPPIST-1b and c, are unchanged. But there's a new third planet, which has taken the d moniker, and what had looked like d before turned out to be glimpses of e, f and g. There's a planet h, too, drifting farthest away and only spotted once.

All of them are larger than Mars and less than 20 per cent bigger than Earth, and probably range from 40 per cent to 140 per cent of Earth's mass. As a group, they seem to be less dense than Earth, perhaps similar to Jupiter's icy moons.

All are well within the distance at which Mercury circles the sun, and take between a day and a half and a few weeks to orbit the star.

Because TRAPPIST-1 is so much smaller and dimmer than the sun, that distance may give the planets the right temperatures for water to survive on the surface.

Before, climate models of the known TRAPPIST-1 planets suggested all were close enough to their star that they had probably lost most or all of their water to space to evaporation and stellar flares in the past. That seemed to rule them out as would-be havens for life.

But the same models show the newly discovered lukewarm planets – e, f and g – would have dried out far less and could still host primordial oceans. It's also conceivable that pockets of liquid water could survive today on the three inner, hotter planets, or could have melted out of ice on the colder outer planet.

The discovery's implications for the search for life don't stop there, says Stephen Kane of San Francisco State University, who wasn't part of the team.

For one, TRAPPIST-1's retinue of planets is arranged like the large moons of Jupiter: their orbits are tightly spaced, and through the exchange of gravitational tugs they have settled into harmonies.

For every eight times the innermost planet circles its star, for example, the second planet orbits five times, the third planet obits three times, and the fourth planet orbits twice.

That kind of compact gravitational clockwork might facilitate the spread of life between worlds. "I think that would dramatically increase the rate at which material is exchanged between the planets," Kane says. "You would only be required to have biological material on one planet, which would then be shared to the others."

Note of caution

Gillon's team now plans to nail down the masses of each planet more precisely. That should help them model how the system formed and how likely it is that the inner planets have volcanoes, similar to Jupiter's innermost moon Io.

They are also trying to figure out whether TRAPPIST-1 is an outlier among small stars, or if many more could be expected to host similar planets. "It's going to be so fun," Gillon says.

Another project, now underway, has already taken the preliminary steps to search for life in the system. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, the team has looked for puffy atmospheres around planets b, c, d, e, f and g – and Hubble's successor

the James Webb Space Telescope, should be able to follow up with a deeper study of the atmospheric chemistry of any of these planets that look promising.

For now, though, many of the most exciting prospects of multiple watery, rocky planets orbiting right on top of each other are still highly speculative. In addition to impacts on one planet scattering material to the others,

"interplanetary travel is pretty easy, too", jokes team member Julien de Wit at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

To which Kane adds his own joking note of caution. For systems with multiple planets that look life-friendly, he says, "science fiction history like The War of the Worlds has indicated that that may actually decrease the overall probability of them being habitable."

Former Bengals linebacker arrested after beating up his neighbor, exposing himself in church park... - Duration: 2:19.

Former Bengals linebacker Jerome Kyle "J.K." Schaffer was arrested Sunday after allegedly assaulting a neighbor and exposing himself in a church parking lot.

The most frightening part was the NFL player referred to the disturbing incident as "probably the best day of my life."

WLWT5 reports the 26-year-old Schaffer walked up his neighbor's driveway saying he was looking for his dog. The former linebacker then attacked the 61-year-old homeowner, who had to be taken to the hospital after being bloodied and bruised.

A witnesses, pastor Lois Kidd, told WLWT5 that Schaffer then ran across the street to the parking lot of a church where he chose to lay down. He then stood up and reportedly exposed himself "several times."

J.K. Schaffer was charged with assault, breaking and entering and public indecency.

"Then he went in to the church and went into the sanctuary, and said, 'I just beat up a guy really bad, and I want to repent,'" Kidd said. "The guy was acting really weird like he was high on something and so then after that, he just sprinted back over to the house next door."

Another witness, Chad Pace, told Fox19 he also saw Shaffer expose himself in the parking lot before the former Bengal told him he was "going to the church to pray."

"He looked very sweaty and red and very just aggravated," Pace said. "So I said 'Are you alright, man?' and he got down like a frog, put his rear on his heels and said 'I've never been better.'

Fox19 also spoke to Schaffer's father, who cried in disbelief saying "This isn't my son."

As if the incident was unusual enough, Schaffer's behavior continued into the court room.

WCPO reports when Schaffer was arraigned in court via video conference, he called his lawyer a "four-eyed bald white guy" while interrupting proceedings.

The 26-year-old went to college at Cincinnati and ended up playing on the Bengals in 2012 and 2013. Shaffer, who was undrafted, appeared in 12 games in 2013 and had nine tackles. He has been out of the NFL since 2014.
