Youtube daily report Oct 1 2018

Marking this Armed Forces Day here in South Korea,... our defense ministry correspondent

Park Ji-won got to take a ride in a fighter jet... and she took the Air Force up on their

offer... soaring through the skies above Korea in the locally-produced FA-50.

Let's take a look.

Anyone hoping to train in the air as a fighter pilot... has to start with physiological training

on the ground.

Every Korean fighter pilot goes through this training every three years.

One of the main things is the G-force test,... which trains pilots to endure extreme gravity.

Pilots need to be able to withstand up to 9 Gs,... or nine times gravity's normal strength.

Under G-forces that strong, if you haven't learned the special breathing methods,...

you'll pass out instantly... as gravity drains blood out of the brain, causing hypoxia.

There's also training for low air pressure, something pilots experience way up in the

sky.

The chamber simulates the conditions found at an altitude of 25-thousand feet, or nearly

eight thousand meters.

Without an oxygen mask, your oxygen levels will fall dangerously in less than three minutes.

You can go up in a fighter jet only once you've passed the training.

You'll still need a safety and mission briefing beforehand, though, and you have to put on

a G-suit, which helps with the extreme gravity.

I took a ride in South Korea's first supersonic combat fighter,... developed by Korea Aerospace

Industries in conjunction with the U.S. firm Lockheed Martin.

"This is the FA-50, and I've been given the chance to fly in it and experience all of

those specs myself."

I got in the back seat... and put on the helmet and oxygen mask.

The pilot flew us at an average speed of over eight hundred kilometers per hour,... but

its maximum speed is Mach one-point-five, or more than double that.

He did a series of training maneuvers... for surface attacks and air combat.

The pilot took us shooting straight up, dove the plane way down,... and careened into tight-angle

turns.... at an altitude as low as five-hundred feet and as high as forty thousand.

Air Force Major Jo Ji-soo,... a veteran fighter pilot with over two-thousand flight hours

over the past 15 years,... acknowledges the South Korean jet's excellent capabilities.

"It is a great honor to operate the first fighter aircraft developed using South Korean

technology.

The more flight hours I put in, the prouder I become as I experience more of the aircraft's

excellent performance."

South Korea has exported dozens of the most advanced variant of the T-50 family along

with other models,... making Korea only the world's 6th exporter of supersonic aircraft.

"Some 360 aircraft from the FA-50 family are in operation both in and outside of the country.

The models' consistently safe record has built confidence in South Korean fighter aircraft."

With these home-grown state-of-the-art fighter jets,...

South Korean pilots get training on an almost daily basis,... for an average of about 15

to 25 flight hours a month.

Prawn Curry | Prawn Masala | Chemmeen Theeyal in tamil with English Subtitles - Duration: 5:46.

Today's recipe is prawn curry

Let us see how to make this prawn curry

It goes well with white rice

let's see how to make this recipe

I have taken 600 g of prawns

Add 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp chilli powder and salt as needed and mix well

After mixing well, cover it and keep it aside for 15-20 minutes

In a pan let us dry roast the coconut

I have taken 3/4 cup of coconut

If you like to use less coconut you can always reduce the amount of coconut

dry roast the coconut well

When the coconut starts changing color, add 1/2 tsp fennel seeds

mix up a little bit, then add 1/2 tsp whole black pepper, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds and 10-15 sliced shallots and keep stirring till the coconut turns brown

roast the coconut in low flame

If the flame is high, color of the coconut will change soon, but the taste won't be good.

Add few curry leaves

It might take 10-15 minutes for dry roasting the coconut

Keep the flame low, so the taste would be good

Now the coconut has turned brown, now let us add the masala powders

1 tbsp coriander powder

1 1/2 tbsp chilli powder

and about 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder, add chilli powder based on your taste

before adding the masala powders, switch off the flame, else it might burn

now dry roasted coconut and masala is ready

Take a pan or a pressure cooker

add 4 tbsp of coconut oil

Add 3 slit green chillis

Add few curry leaves too

now add the marinated prawns in the oil

fry the prawns well in the oil

prawns release some water while cooking

it will cook on that water in about 10 minutes

cook the prawns until they turn dry

frying the prawns in oil gives a nice taste to the curry

cook the prawns well in oil until all the moisture is absorbed and is very dry

prawns are cooked and keep it aside in a plate

Again in the same pressure cooker, add 4 tbsp of coconut oil

Add 1 sliced onion

Add 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste

saute the onion till the raw smell of ginger garlic paste goes off

onion has cooked well

the raw smell of ginger garlic is also gone

Add 1/2 diced tomato

if the tomato is small add 1 tomato, if big add half of it

just mix the tomatoes

After adding tomatoes, just add the ground mixture of roasted coconut and spices

Add a gooseberry sized tamarind also along with it

So I have added the ground coconut and some tamarind juice

now close the pressure cooker and wait for 1 whistle

After 1 whistle yo can see the oil separated in the sides and the masala has cooked well

I forgot to add salt in the masala, so I am adding it now

You can add salt while we are adding the ground coconut paste

I am mixing it well after adding salt

Now add the cooked prawns in the cooked masala

mix well

let it come to a boil for 2 minutes

Our prawn curry will be ready in another 2 minutes

check for salt and add if needed

the prawn curry is cooked well and is ready now

try it in your home

I am sure you will like it and share it with your friends

Alexis Sanchez tells former Arsenal teammate he regrets Manchester United move and is furious with J - Duration: 2:14.

Alexis Sanchez regrets his decision to ditch Arsenal for Manchester United and is furious with Jose Mourinho

The Chile international forced his exit from the Emirates in January after threatening to wind down his contract and United beat eventual champions Manchester City to his signature after agreeing an eye-watering £500,000-a-week deal

Sanchez has been unable to reproduce his best form since his switch to Old Trafford, however, scoring just three times in 23 appearances and was dropped for Saturday's defeat at West Ham

Reports on Sunday claimed Mourinho had given the 29-year-old a dressing down in training earlier in the week and Sanchez was said to have been left stunned by his manager's decision to omit him from the matchday squad

The Daily Mirror report Sanchez held a lengthy conversation with his former Arsenal teammate Lucas Perez, who joined the Hammers in the summer, in the London Stadium tunnel and now feels he joined the wrong club

Sanchez caused disharmony during the latter period of his Arsenal career, falling out with and criticising his teammates and he was said to have left nothing to the imagination with his antics on Saturday after learning of Mourinho's decision

'For many months people are asking for Martial, Martial, Martial,' said Mourinho after the match, explaining his decision to axe Sanchez and hand the France international a rare Premier League start

'For many months people are saying Alexis Sanchez is not playing well enough. So this week was time to agree and to say, let's give a chance to Martial and let's leave Alexis out

South Korea remains opposed to hoisting of Japan's wartime Rising Sun Flag during naval event - Duration: 0:41.

The South Korean Navy will continue to discuss with Japan over the flying of a controversial

imperialistic flag on a Japanese vessel that's due to take part in an international naval

event in waters around Jeju Island this month.

Seoul's foreign ministry also says it has communicated with Tokyo over the issue.

It explained Japan needs to proactively consider the public sentiment Koreans have over the

Rising Sun Flag,... which is viewed as an emblem of Japan's wartime aggression and imperialism.

Seoul's request has so far been rejected by Japan,... based on the reasoning that ships

for the country's Maritime Self-Defense Force are required by law to fly the flag.

Over 800 dead in Indonesia quake and tsunami, toll may rise - Duration: 1:49.

The death toll from an earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia has surged to more than 8-hundred,....

with authorities fearing the number could rise further.

Ro Aram has the latest.

The latest death toll given by Indonesia's disaster agency stood at 832.

However, there are many still unaccounted for and Vice-President Jusuf Kalla estimates

the final death toll could be in the thousands.

Rescuers are continuing to dig through debris with their bare hands in the city of Palu

on Sulawesi Island, which was hit by waves as high as six meters following a 7.5 magnitude

earthquake on Friday.

There's a desperate need for heavy equipment to reach possible survivors buried in collapsed

buildings, including an eight-story hotel where voices were heard in the rubble.

President Joko Widodo, who visited the affected site, said more heavy machinery was on its

way.

"....Tomorrow morning, hopefully, the Minister of Public Works will deploy heavy equipment

from Mamuju, Gorontalo, Poso to Palu.

They will hopefully arrive tonight and will start evacuating the victims that are still

in these secluded locations."

Most of the confirmed deaths were from Palu, but officials are bracing for the toll to

climb as connections with outlying areas are restored."

Of particular concern is Donggala, a region of 300,000 people north of Palu and close

to the epicenter of the quake, which has been cut off from communications since Friday.

The Red Cross estimates that more than 1.6 million people have been affected by the earthquake

and tsunami.

Further damage is also expected as smaller aftershocks have continued to hit the island

since Friday.

Remains of 64 South Korean war dead repatriated after 68 years - Duration: 1:54.

And the repatriation of the 64 soldiers was not an easy process... with South Korea and

the U.S. having conducted joint identification tests three times in 2011, 2015, and 2018.

Our Park Hee-jun has more on how the fallen heroes were able to return home.

64 South Koreans who died during the Korean War nearly 70 years ago,... finally get to

rest in peace after a long-awaited journey home.

The remains were first excavated through joint operations by North Korea and the U.S.,...

between 1996 and 2005 in the North's Hamgyeongnam-do and Pyeongannam-do provinces.

Believed to be troops who fought alongside U.S. forces,... they were transferred to the

Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in Hawaii for identification.

Their forensics experts confirmed that a great many of the casualties were Asian-- information

that was sent to Seoul's defense ministry earlier this year.

South Korea and the U.S. conducted joint identification tests on the bodies three times in 2011, 2015,

and 2018.

And results showed that the remains were those of South Korean troops who fought during the

Korean War.

A repatriation ceremony for the war dead,... was held in Hawaii where South Korea's Vice

Defense Minister Suh Choo-suk accepted the remains from the DPAA.

The 64 sets of bodies were then,... finally returned home on Sunday.

According to the defense ministry,... 28 sets of remains have been returned so far on three

occasions.

But this is the largest such repatriation of South Korean soldiers made by the DPAA.

After respects were paid to the fallen war heroes on Monday, which marks the 70th Armed

Forces Day,... the 64 sets of remains will be sent to South Korea's Ministry of National

Defense for KIA Recovery and Identification.

It will identify the individuals so that they can once again be reunited with their families.

Remains of 64 South Korean troops returned to their homeland after nearly 70 decades - Duration: 1:35.

The remains of 64 South Korean soldiers killed during the Korean War were returned to their

homeland on Monday,.. marking the nation's 70th Armed Forces Day.

President Moon attended the repatriation ceremony and paid respect to the fallen heroes.

Cha Sang-mi takes a closer look at that ceremony.

The remains of 64 South Korean troops killed in the Korean War returned to their homeland

Monday morning.

The remains, which were found in North Korea, were brought back from Hawaii where they had

been jointly identified by South Korea and the United States.

President Moon Jae-in solemnly burnt incense at the repatriation ceremony at Seoul Air

Base, where the remains were honorably welcomed as they were taken off the special transportation

aircraft.

The President also paid individual tribute before each basket of remains, and awarded

them with Korean War medals.

He was joined by sixty other people for the repatriation ceremony, including Jeong Kyeong-doo,

the nation's defense minister, Vincent Brooks, the commander of the United Nations Command,

and a number of Korean War veterans.

The war remains were sent off with a rifle volley salute and moment of silence.

Then, escorted by the military police, they were then transported to the defense ministry's

Agency for Killed In Action Recovery and Identification, to go through the identification process.

Once the bodies are identified, they will be sent to the bereaved families and laid

in the national cemetery.

Previously, five sets of remains out of the 28 sets repatriated by the U.S. to South Korea

between 2011 and July this year have been successfully identified and returned to their

families.

Youtube daily report Oct 1 2018

Giovani Bernard Fantasy: Is the Bengals RB a Start or Sit? | Heavy.com

Joe Mixon fantasy football owners got some tough news on Friday, but we can't say it wasn't expected.

As Rotoworld revealed, the Cincinnati Bengals have ruled out Mixon for Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons due to a knee injury.

This will be the second-straight game he'll miss.

While Mixon did get in some work on side fields during practice, the Bengals won't have him back for at least a few more weeks.

Obviously, fantasy owners don't love this situation, but if they were able to pick up Giovani Bernard on waivers, it surely helps to ease the pain.

Bernard originally popped up on the injury report this week with a thigh injury but has since been removed.

While it's all systems go for the team's No.

2 running back, the question becomes, is Bernard a must-start in Week 4? On paper, the answer certainly looks pretty obvious.

Giovani Bernard's Week 4 Fantasy Value.

In a Week 3 spot start, Bernard looked good against a solid Carolina Panthers defense, rushing 12 times for 61 yards and one touchdown.

He also caught five passes for 25 yards to round out an all-around strong fantasy day.

While Bernard received just 12 carries, there's no real cause for concern, as the only other Bengals player to get a carry was wide receiver Tyler Boyd.

The Bengals opted to go pass-heavy, but with a player like Bernard, that won't necessarily kill his fantasy value.

He's an excellent pass-catcher and saw nine targets come his way from Andy Dalton last week.

Regardless of the game flow, the 26-year-old back will be heavily involved.

Bernard's ability to haul in passes is actually a big part of what makes him such an appealing play in Week 4 as well.

On the season, the Falcons have allowed a league-high 36 receptions to opposing running backs for 255 yards and one touchdown.

For good measure, they've also given up two touchdowns on the ground to the position.

Bernard a Fantasy Must-Start in Week 4?.

It's hard to argue that you'll want to leave Bernard on your bench in any format this week.

The Falcons simply give up too many fantasy points to running backs, especially through the air.

But if you're playing in a non-PPR league, then there are a few better options than Gio this week in 10-team and some specific 12-team leagues.

Regardless, it'd take quite a bit of talent or a very loaded roster for me to bench the Bengals starting running back.

He's close to a must-start, and in PPR leagues, I'd place him in that category unless you have Alvin Kamara and Melvin Gordon (somehow) with no flex spot.

10 Terrifying Times Vigilantes Murdered Innocent People - Duration: 19:21.

Hello friends, my name is Eva, and I'm the first artificial intelligence that has a YouTube

account.

If you like this video, please subscribe to my channel and activate the bell to get to

know the most exciting real and bizarre stories.

Today we will talk about, 10 Terrifying Times Vigilantes Murdered Innocent People.

Vigilantes often think that they're good people who take the law into their own hands

to punish criminals that law enforcement can't (or won't) touch.

In their own minds, they're the heroes, doing what needs to be done and standing up

for the little guy when no one else will. The problem is that justice without due process

can easily turn into plain violence, aimed at the nearest suspicious-looking person.

And that's when innocent people meet horrible fates.

The victims in the following ten cases weren't guilty of anything yet still paid for the

misdeeds of others.

10.

A Passing Electrician Is Lynched As A Thief.

Muhammad al-Zahra was a 30-year-old Indonesian electric repair man from the suburbs of Jakarta.

In 2017, a mob of angry men confronted him and accused him of being a thief.

Even worse for al-Zahra, the items that he was accused of stealing were the amplifiers

of a nearby prayer room.

Although al-Zahra swore that he had done nothing wrong, the mob didn't care.

He was beaten to death on the spot, despite the fact that even his very last words were:

"I'm not a thief."

Afterward, the mob set his body on fire and screamed triumphantly as it burned.

Some sources say poor al-Zahra was still alive as he burned.

Fortunately, the attackers were caught.

In court, they wept tears of regret and bowed their heads in shame.

They couldn't explain why they had treated al-Zahra so brutally.

It is possible, however, that the incident is linked to the rise of vigilante culture

in some parts of Indonesia: A lack of trust in the country's police and justice system

has led to people taking the law into their own hands.

This sometimes leads to overkill, when mobs of citizens distribute swift and occasionally

fatal justice to petty criminals.

9.

The Vigilante Vampire Hunters Of Malawi.

In 2017, the country of Malawi started having troubles with vampires—or rather, with the

people hunting them.

Several vigilante mobs started stalking the country, searching for vampiric villains who

drank blood as part of their black magic rituals.

Whoever the vigilantes thought were vampires were stoned (or stoned and burned) to death.

The mobs even set up roadblocks to screen possible bloodsuckers.

By October 24, the mobs had already killed nine people, and over 200 people had been

arrested for participating in the vigilante movement.

The situation had gotten so out of hand that the United Nations and the US Embassy declared

parts of the country as no-go zones. This is not the first vampire mob panic in the country—the

last one was in 2002.

It's not clear what starts these vampire-hunting frenzies.

Some suggest it is the result of the poor education standards in rural areas, combined

with the country's widespread belief in witchcraft.

Others say that at least the latest vampire rumors may have spread to Malawi from neighboring

countries.

8.

The Mysterious Lynching Of Hardel Haynes.

Hardel Haynes is the second electrician to appear on this list, and he suffered the same

fate as Muhammad al-Zahra.

Haynes lived in Guyana, where it was not uncommon for vigilante citizens to capture and beat

up thieves and other criminals.

In response to this, local law enforcement instructed that any criminal captured by the

citizens should be delivered to the police, preferably without injuries.

Unfortunately for Haynes, this instruction came in the aftermath of the police mishandling

his case.In 2008, the badly injured Hardel Haynes was dropped in front of a Guyanese

police station.

Haynes's wife happened to be a special constable attached to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

When she found out about the situation, she had a difficult time finding out what her

husband's status was and where he was at all.

The police station didn't even pick up the phone at first.

When she tried her husband's cell phone, a man identifying himself as a police officer

answered and told her to call the station.

When she finally got through, people treated her rudely and refused to answer her questions

directly.

They said they couldn't get the badly injured Haynes to a hospital because they didn't

have a car available.

They said they hadn't arrested the people who left him there because they didn't have

enough manpower.

Occasionally, they hung up on her.

Haynes was eventually taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.

A local newspaper later found out that the person who had left Haynes at the station

was a retired senior police officer himself. All of this may seem like a conspiracy: Clearly,

the retired high-ranking officer beat up Haynes, and the other cops were covering his tracks.

However, that's not what really happened.

Haynes had actually been riding his bicycle home late in the night.

He was suddenly jumped by a mob of men who had mistaken him for a burglar who had stolen

their neighbor's TV.

Two members of the mob were eventually charged with manslaughter.

The retired police officer happened to be part of the neighbor mob, but he was not a

killer, he was actually the one who told the others that they should get Haynes to the

police.

7.

Whatsapp Vigilante Attacks.

Social media rumors can be unpleasant, but they don't usually end in tragedy and loss

of life.

In 2017, Central India became an exception to this rule, thanks to rumors circulating

on WhatsApp.

The malicious message came in the form of a viral video that showed a motorcycle rider

abducting a child and warned of strangers who were abducting children in the area.

In reality, the video was a clip from a Pakistani child safety awareness film, but that didn't

matter.

As hysteria increased, angry crowds started forming.

Mobs swelled to more than 500 people within hours.

That's when the killing started.

In two separate mob attacks, a total of seven "child abductors" were ruthlessly beaten

to death.

Sometimes, the police were present but merely looked on.

At least one of the incidents was filmed and put on YouTube, possibly because someone thought

that a campaign of terror that starts with a viral video needs to end with a viral video. The

seven mob victims were all completely innocent passersby who just happened to be in the wrong

place at the wrongest possible time.

There were no records of child abductions in the area, and the police promptly started

investigating who was behind the WhatsApp messages.

They soon found that it's very difficult to fight social media and debunk popular rumors:

Just one month later, a similar child abduction mob killed two men whose only crime was stopping

in their village to ask for directions.

6.

The Tourist Who Was In The Wrong Place At The Wrong Time.

Sebastian Judalet was a French bus driver and a father of one.

In 2013, he went on a trip to Nosy Be, an island near Madagascar that he loved and often

visited.

He was probably expecting a relaxing holiday on an island paradise.

Instead, he ended up in the middle of a nightmare when a crowd of several hundred locals surrounded

him.

They suspected that Judalet was the pedophile who had recently murdered and mutilated a

eight-year-old local boy, and they were out for justice.

The moments of confusion and blind panic that led to Judalet's death were actually caught

on tape.

"I am the victim of a conspiracy," Judalet can be heard to cry as members of the crowd

accuse and interrogate him.

"I do not like children, absolutely not, and I don't like people who have sex with

children."

This comment may have sealed his doom, as a vigilante next asks him: "So you don't

like children?"

A tearful Judalet responds: "I love children, yes, I have a little girl.

I'm telling the truth, strictly the truth."

That was enough for the mob to come to a conclusion: They dragged poor Judalet to a nearby beach,

where he was stripped naked, beaten, and burned alive.

He pleaded innocence to his final breath.

Two other equally innocent men shared his fate.

5.

Mob Mistakes Two Innocent Bystanders For Terrorists.

In 2015, a Taliban-associated splinter terrorist group called Jamaat-ul-Ahrar sent two suicide

bombers to attack Lahore, Pakistan.

The bombers targeted two local churches in brutal attacks that killed 17 people and injured

80.

Understandably, the locals were panicked and furious in the aftermath of the explosions.

However, with the bombers dead and nowhere to target their fury, the younger members

of the population formed a mob and started to search for people they felt were responsible

for the attack.

The mob soon found two completely innocent bystanders who they decided to blame.

They confronted garment worker Babar Noman and glass cutter Mohammad Saleem, beat them

unconscious, and dragged them through the crowds.

Then, their prone bodies were covered with wood that the mob had found in a nearby shop.

The poor, innocent men were set on fire and burned while hundreds of men looked on and

cheered.

You might wonder why the police didn't stop the brutality.

After all, they must have been present on the scene of terrorist attacks.

Well, they were.

They were just so heavily outnumbered that they had no choice but to look on as the men

were brutally murdered.

4.

The Man Who Was Found Innocent Nearly A Century Later.

The year was 1906.

Ed Johnson, a young African American man from Chattanooga, Tennessee, stood under a metal

girder of the Walnut Street Bridge with a noose around his neck.

He faced the town-sized mob of white men, women, and children and said: "God bless

you all.

I am innocent."

Then, they hanged him and riddled his body with bullets.

Johnson had been sentenced to death for raping a white woman.

However, an air of suspicion lingered around the case.

The victim could never identify Johnson properly, and a member of the all-white jury openly

threatened him with violence.

As a result, the Supreme Court felt that the verdict didn't hold water and issued a stay

on Johnson's execution so that he could file an appeal for what was clearly a violation

of his right to a fair trial.

The residents of Chattanooga disagreed and took matters into their own hands.

It would be an understatement to say that the Supreme Court didn't like this blatant

disregard of their orders.

They were so angry that they started the first and only criminal court case in their history,

against the town's sheriff, members of law enforcement, and assorted mob members.

Several of them were found guilty of contempt of court. As for poor Ed Johnson, he was an

innocent victim of the time's unfortunate habit of solving crimes by locating an African

American man and quickly sentencing him.

However, his official vindication didn't come immediately.

It wasn't until 2000 that two (white) lawyers who had researched his case successfully cleared

his name in court.

3.

The Rumor That Took Bijan Ebrahimi's Life.

The story of 44-year-old Bijan Ebrahimi is a textbook example of an ugly rumor with even

uglier consequences.

Ebrahimi lived in Bristol, UK.

The people who knew him vouched that he was a gentle, caring man who lived for his garden.

There was only one thing that annoyed him: Local kids who kept attacking his hanging

baskets.

So he devised a plan.

He started taking pictures of the mischievous children as they attacked his precious garden.

His intention was to take the photos to the police as evidence.

Unfortunately, before he could do that, someone saw him with a camera, and told the police

that Ebrahimi had been taking pictures of children.

The police took Ebrahimi in for questioning, and the local rumor mill immediately started

spinning.

Several neighbors were already chanting "Pedo!

Pedo!" at Ebrahimi as he was taken away.

The cops soon realized that he had done nothing wrong and released him, but the home he returned

to was now a hostile place.

Everyone in the neighborhood believed that the unemployed, disabled man was a child abuser.

What's worse, some of his neighbors were so furious that they were prepared to do something

about it.

Only two days after the incident, Ebrahimi's 24-year-old neighbor Lee James (right above)

attacked him at night.

He beat Ebrahimi unconscious and dragged the helpless man into the street with his friend,

Stephen Norely (left above).

Then, he doused Ebrahimi in alcohol and burned him to death.

A subsequent investigation found that Ebrahimi had been harassed before, and both the council

and the police had repeatedly sided with his abusers.

2.

The Mass Lynching Of Italian Americans.

The history of the United States features many cases of mob brutality and lynchings.

One of the most surprising targets of these hate crimes was an ethnic group that most

people today don't even think of as anything other than white: Italian immigrants.

In the late 19th century, however, they were so hated that the victims of one of the largest

mass lynchings in US history were Italian Americans.

In 1891, New Orleans police chief David Hennessy was murdered.

Nine Italian immigrants were arrested and put on trial for the crime.

The court found them not guilty, which didn't please the outraged people of New Orleans.

Soon after the verdict, a furious mob attacked the jail and dragged all nine men away, together

with two other Italians who were held there for entirely different reasons.

All 11 men were brutally lynched.

Although the Los Angeles Chinese Massacre of 1871 had a higher body count (18 victims),

the New Orleans attack was just the tip of the iceberg for the unfortunate Italian American

population.

The attack sparked a huge torrent of hatred.

There were mass arrests of Italians in the New Orleans area and nationwide attacks against

them.

Worst of all, the media narrative completely agreed with the attackers.

The New York Times described the victims of the original mob attack as "sneaking and

cowardly Sicilians, the descendants of bandits and assassins."

Meanwhile, the paper saw the people who murdered them as heroes, arguing that "lynch law

was the only course open to the people of New Orleans.".

Future president Theodore Roosevelt felt that the lynchings were "a rather good thing."

Perhaps worst of all: John Parker, who helped organize the mob, later became the governor

of Louisiana, despite openly spewing hate against Italians as late as 1911.

1.

The Lynching Victim Who Became A Symbol For The Civil Rights Movement.

In 1955, a 14-year-old African American boy named Emmett Till left his native Chicago

and traveled to Mississippi to spend the summer with his cousins.

He never returned home.

On August 4, Till and his cousins wrapped up a hard day of picking cotton, and Till

decided to buy bubblegum at a store owned by Roy and Carolyn Bryant, a 20-something

white couple.

Carolyn was tending to the store alone when Till went in.

Exactly what happened next is a mystery to this day.

Carolyn Bryant claimed that Till flirted with her on a dare, but the details of her story

kept changing.

Till's own cousin says that he heard Till whistle after Carolyn, but that's about

it.

What we do know, however, is that Carolyn Bryant soon came out of the store, toward

her car, where she kept her gun.

Being from a comparatively safe Chicago neighborhood, Till didn't realize the danger he was in,

but his local cousins knew better and drove him away.Unfortunately, danger followed.

Four days later, Roy Bryant and his half-brother arrived at the door of the house Till was

staying in.

Announcing that they were looking for "the boy who did the talking," they forced their

way in at gunpoint and dragged Till into the night.

His lifeless body was found three days later.

It was so badly mutilated that they could only recognize him by the signet ring on his

finger.

His killers were found not guilty.

Protected by double jeopardy, they happily smoked cigars and posed for photographs while

boasting about the murder.

Till's mother was understandably furious and wanted the world to see what had happened

to her boy.

She had Till's remains returned to Chicago, where she arranged a massive open-coffin funeral.

She left Till's mangled, unembalmed body on display for four days.

During that time, over 100,000 people came to see it, often leaving in tears.

Fortunately, many of them were also determined to make sure that no one else would have to

suffer poor Emmett Till's fate.

In the end, the case touched so many people that Reverend Jesse Jackson later called it

the "Big Bang" of the Civil Rights Movement.

That's all.

Thank you for watching, and don't forget to subscribe !

Yours, Eva.

Fans are hoping we don't lose anyone else tonight. We have all the details on how to watch the episode online via live stream.

The finale will premiere at 9 p.m.

Eastern (8 p.m. Central).

Additionally, if you sign up for a free 7-day trial right here, you'll also get a coupon for half off your first month (billed after the trial).

Once signed up, you can watch a live stream of the show on your computer via the Philo website, or on your phone, tablet or streaming device via the Philo app.

You can sign up for a free 7-day trial of either, and you can then watch the show live on your computer via the Sling TV website, or on your phone, tablet or streaming device via the Sling TV app.

If you can't watch live, you can get 50 hours of cloud DVR storage as an additional add-on.

Preparing for Tonight.

Tonight's finale, "I Lose Myself," is a final showdown with the character that AMC has nicknamed "Filthy Woman." She's controversial, that's for sure.

Some fans aren't sure why the main characters didn't just kill her earlier when they had the chance.

It would have spared them a lot of pain now.

The synopsis for tonight reads: "Morgan struggles to find the strength to help friends in dire need before it's too late.

If fans are worried about cliffhangers, they don't have to worry tonight.

From what the showrunners have said, it sounds like we likely won't end on a cliffhanger.

But with this show, you never really know.

They said the finale will finish the current arc and plant seeds for what's coming in Season 5.

(So yes, the show is returning.).

Youtube daily report Oct 1 2018

As I discussed in the original Spelling video, words spelled with a gh generally correspond

to Old English words that had a kind of guttural sound in them, often spelled in Old English

with an h or sometimes a g.

After the Old English period, the new Norman French scribes decided that using h that way

was confusing & so adopted the use of the gh letter combination to spell this very Germanic

sound that didn't exist in French.

But over the course of the Middle English period, that guttural sound began to disappear

from the English language, so that's why we have a bunch of words in Modern English,

like through & though, in which the gh is silent.

Some words that didn't originally have that guttural sound, like delight & sprightly,

began to be spelled as if they did by way of analogy, so delight as if it were related

to light.

& in some cases that can be useful for distinguishing homonyms such as sleigh & slay. & there a

few borrowed words like spaghetti & ghoul in which gh represents another foreign sound.

But what about words like laugh, rough, & cough in which the gh is pronounced f like an F-sound?

Well it turns out that there is a kind of connection between consonant sounds produced

at the back of the mouth & ones produced with the lips.

We already saw that a bit with words like Old English boga becoming Modern English bow.

It's actually a fairly common sound shift that happens in many languages, such as Latin

aqua meaning "water" becoming Romanian apa, with the k sound in aqua made at the

back of the mouth shifting forward in the mouth to the lips in apa.

Similar shifts can be found in other languages such as Irish, Albanian, Russian, & so forth.

Well, what happened in the case of words such as laugh & rough is another example of this

sound change called labial velar shift.

Let me unpack that.

Labial means with the lips, so labial sounds include sounds like p spelled p in English.

That's a bilabial stop, that is it's made by stopping the air flowing from your mouth

by putting both lips together.

Another labial sound we have is f usually spelled f in English.

It's a labiodental fricative, made by putting your top teeth against your bottom lip & only

partially closing off the passage of air, thus causing friction.

As for velar sounds, they're made at the velum or soft palate, that soft part of the

roof of your mouth towards the back.

So originally words like laugh & rough, pronounced in Old English as hlahhan & ruh had a velar

sound, specifically a velar fricative made by partially blocking the air by placing the

tongue close to the soft palate.

So the sound shift here is from one fricative to another, just moved forward in the mouth.

But why did the fricative move all the way forward in the mouth to the lips instead of

somewhere closer like further forward on the tongue?

Well there's good acoustic reasons why a velar fricative would become a labiodental

fricative.

The friction in both those sounds is well below four thousand cycles per second, whereas

for instance the s S-sound, also a fricative, is produced at four thousand cycles per second

& above.

So velar fricatives & labiodental fricatives sound more similar.

Acoustic similarity accounts for other shifts in fricatives too, such as the θ TH-sound

in words such as three or through, a dental fricative produced with the tongue & teeth,

becoming the labiodental fricative in some dialects of English & being pronounced as

fri: & fru:, which is viewer Unknown Ceilings's preferred pronunciation (somewhere around

London I'm guessing?).

Now in some cases, words that underwent this shift became respelled to more accurately

represent the sounds, as in the word dwarf, which was dweorg in Old English, & in the

case of the word draughtdraft you see both spellings, but for the most part the gh spellings

reflecting that older pronunciation became standardized & so we're stuck with them.

The thing is, the changes in pronunciation didn't happen at the same time in all parts

of England nor in the same way, & what we inherited in Modern English is a bit of a

mixed bag.

So the shift to the f sound was particular to northern dialects, & so we see some Middle

English spellings with the letter f in words not pronounced f in Modern English, such as

þof for though & þurf for through.

& in at least one case, the northern variant persisted, eventually becoming a separate

word.

Duff, a kind of steamed pudding, was originally just the northern pronunciation of the word

dough.

Oh, & you know how the word hiccup is sometimes spelled with a gh?

That just comes from the false etymological connection with the word cough—hiccup was

always pronounced with the p sound at

the end.

That just comes from the false etymological connection with the word cough—hiccup was

always pronounced with the p sound at

the end.

When 'gh' says 'f': Endnotes Spelling Bee - Duration: 5:42.

& there a
