Youtube daily report Feb 7 2017

Welcome to Sipa's garage.

This time we are going to look into teh Siemens ms41 ECU tuning basics.

You can find these Siemens ms41 engine control units from BMW m52 engines.

And also from s52 engine in US m3 models.

Which is just stroked m52 with more aggressive cams.

So same control unit.

Here you can see Euro model ms41 which is called ms41.0

There is also ms41.1 which can be found at least in US m52 engines.

And then there is ms41.2 which can be found from s52 engine.

These all are basically the same control units which differ in the software part.

But the euro units for example can be missing few features included in the US ms41.1 and ms41.2 units.

For example they may lack support for downstream lambda probes.

But the different software versions are compatible between all of these.

You also might want to keep on mind that all of these ms41 units can't be flashed in the way I'm going to show you.

At least the early Euro models from -95 don't have flash chip inside them.

And those can't be flashed like this.

So you have to buy newer unit is yours is like that and you want to tune it.

If I remember correctly the flash chip has come inside these after 9/95 so after that the units are ok.

From the outside I have found that you could check that from looking at this label.

In the units that have flash chip, there is "Index" something after the Siemens part number. Like "Index 09" like in this.

So these can be tuned in the way I'm going to show.

Then for example I have one unit from 7/95

And in this there isn't any "Index xx" marking and it can't be flashed. So it's useless for tuning.

In e36 cars this control unit can be found in the passenger side from here.

In e39, e38 z3 or which other cars have these control units.

I'n not exactly sure where you can found the ECU.

You can google it if needed.

Because when tuning these you don't have access the control unit itself. I just showed how it looks like.

The place you do the tuning is this round diagnostic plug in the engine compartment.

Which looks like this.

And the flashing happens through this.

With simple tools.

First you will need adapter from the round BMW plug to normal OBDII plug.

Which goes in here.

Like this.

And to be able to flash the control unit you have to run wire from pin 14 to pin 18.

Which provides +12v to flash enable pin in the control unit.

If you only use this for tuning you could permanently attach wire between those pins.

But I use this also for reading fault codes etc. so I have this button here.

So now when I lift this switch I will enable the flash voltage by bridging those pins.

So just in case.

But if you only use this for flashing, then you could permanently solder wire between those pins.

But in my setup I can't flash in this position.

And now I can.

But of course you will need to connect this to your PC also.

And that can be done using standard usb-obdII adapter.

I have these kind of VAG KKL OBDII adapters and this seems to say BMW KKL.

These are something like 5 Euros if ordered from china through eBay.

For this use you don't need to modify these in any way.

But if you have VAG KKL adapter and bridge then pins 7 and 8 you can use these to read fault codes and do all kinds of useful stuff.

So these are really handy.

So 5 Euro adapter and connect this usb to your laptop and you are ready.

Of course you will need some software to your PC for this.

But for recap this adapter is just 5€ and little bit of modification to it.

And this costs roughly the same in eBay.

No modifications needed for this but bridge pins 7 and 8 for fault code reading.

This particular one came in already modded so this works fine with INPA etc.

So I can put link for this.

This includes the modded cable and all of the BMW software for 15€

Yes.

But now lets see what we need to install to the PC to be able to tune the ms41 control units.

First we need this siemens ms41 flash tool.

From chipster.no

This is software made by Norwegian guy and it's worth buying.

This costs something like 25€ or 30 usd or something like that.

But this is what you need.

There are also other tools for this but normally those only can read and write the partial section of the flash.

And that only includes the calibration data. Ok. That is the part you normally only need to touch while tuning.

But this also supports full write/read.

So it can read the whole 256 kb flash which includes the software code for the control unit.

This is needed for example if you want to change between different software versions like from ms41.0 to 41.1 or 41.2

Normally you would need to modifications when changing the software version, but this tool does it for you.

So with this you can just change to different full flash without worrying anything.

This also corrects all checksums.

And the checksums mean that if you have changed something and haven't calculated the checksums for the flash dump, the car wont start.

But this tool does that for you.

So with this tool you just need to adjust your tune and write/flash that in without worrying all kinds of things. So really handy for tuning.

For other tools it gets complicated if you for example need to calculate checksums every time.

So this 25€ or 30 usd is not very much for this SW.

Depending on the exchange rate of course.

But that is not much.

I can now open this software.

And it looks simple like this.

I just don't have any cable connected currently.

Here you can read and write the partial flash dump.

And full flash from here.

And some ECU infromation.

Then here you choose your com-port.

So really simple tool which works like a charm. I haven't had any problems.

Then after we have read the flash to our PC we need RomRaider software to edit it.

Not here, but here.

From here you can download it.

This is free software.

But if you get the job done using this I recommend donating some money for the guys that have made this.

They have done big job for this so even small amount would be polite if the tool is useful for you.

But download this and you will also need Java installed in your computer.

And if I remember correctly, you will need 32bit Java for this tool.

So install 32bit java and this and we start to be close to tune.

The RomRaider itself looks like this.

There is also other tools for this like WinOLS and TunerPro for editing the ECU maps.

But which makes this RomRaider best in my opinion are the very good definition files for ms41 ECU.

Which can be found from RomRaider Forum.

So we go to the Forum, choose ECU analysis, BMW and MS41 Tuning and development.

And from here you can find the MS41 ECU definitions -thread.

Lets open that.

And..

And here you can find these.

This 0.43 version seems to be the newest while doing this video.

So lets download this.

Like that.

And this definition file is the one that tells where all the maps and parameters and etc. can be found from the flash dump.

For example for WinOLS and TunerPro I haven't found any good definition files.

Only some unfinished ones with only few maps defined.

Of course there can be some commercial ones that I'm not aware of.

But this current 0.43 version for RomRaider is very comprehensive definition file for tuning.

So after getting that I will open the Romraider and choose ECU definitions.

And the manager.

I already have this 0.43 version selected.

But using add you can add the definition file that was just downloaded. I seem to have older versions here also.

I also have definitions for ms42 and ms43 in here.

But maybe I will tell about those later.

But now when it's in use I will just click save and apply and it's ok.

Now I can choose file, Open image.

And I can now open the flash dump that has been read by the Flash tool.

In name it writes the ECU number, VIN number and is it full or partial flash.

Like this.

But I will open this one.

Normally the partial is the only thing you will need while tuning.

Full flash is only needed when doing changes to software code or when changing software version.

But I will open this.

It's now loading it.

Yes.

And now we can open all these maps in here.

Here are the fuel maps.

The base fuel map.

In the Y-axle is the engine RPM.

And at the X-axle is the load.

But what does this load mean.

We can check that from this one wiki page.

Not this.

But this ms41 wiki.

Here up you can see the URL.

Here is lot of information for ms41 tuning.

In addition to this ms41 tuning and development section in RomRaider forum.

Where is also lot of information if you have time to look for it.

And you could also ask answer for some difficult questions that there isn't already answer.

Normally you will get answer to your question.

For example I..

I asked how I could correct the MPG gauge to be correct with bigger injectors.

And quite quickly I got the answer and now my MPG gauge shows correct readings.

But that is where you should search things and for basic information you should go trough the ms41 wiki.

But back to the load thing.

The load is calculated based on the measured Air mass from the MAF and RPM using this formula here.

This load basically tells the engine torque potential.

Which can be achieved if the engine is otherwise tuned.

In practice if you floor it the load makes this kind of curve in here through the rev range.

Which of course depends on your engine setup.

The load curve pretty much resembles the torque curve.

From the logs you can see what is the load on specific RPM and adjust the tune according to that.

Using these cells.

Then there is all kinds of maps.

Like fuel injection at cranking.

Fuel injector dead time..

Then adjustments for VANOS.

idle adjustments.

Limiters..

And here are the sensors scalings.

For example if you need to use different coolant sensor.

So you can set scaling for that.

Here is same for IAT sensor.

And here is the MAF table which is probably the most important.

Because if the air mass exceeds the capabilities of the stock maf, you need to change that to bigger one and change the MAF map according to that.

In this case the ECU just measures the MAF voltage from 0 to 5 volt.

And this map tells what air mass that voltage corresponds.

And then this air mass information with the RPM reading is used to calculate the load.

Then here is the ignition map for example.

Basically almost all the things you need to tune can be found here.

But then it depends on your software version, is it 41.0, 41.1 or 41.2

There may be different maps defined.

But if something is now missing it might be added later on.

I think that ms41.2 has most maps defined.

There is not much differences in maps defined for partial dumps but most of the differences are in full dumps.

Depending on the version.

But then how I can show that this really works.

And for that I will go to the limiters folder.

Here is engine speed limiter -hard limiter.

Which is the basic engine rpm limiter.

It's now at about 6500 RPM.

For this test I will put this to 7000 RPM up in here and click set.

So now the max engine RPM should we 7000 after we write this in.

So then file..

I will save as and name it rajotin.bin

Yes I will write over the old.

So now when we flash that into the ECU it should be in use.

But did I miss something.

Yeah in here I got.

I will show..

In addition to those ms41.0, ms41.1 and ms41.2 versions.

There is also different ECU numbers.

For example these all are ms41.0 versions.

But these are different SW versions of that.

So for example if someone has made tune for this -401 ending ECU.

And then if you got -861 ending ECU I wouldn't flash this partial over it.

It may fuck up the whole thing because of different software code.

But if you got situation like this you could just open both bins.

This one was 401 so I will open 861

So you could then open the maps that are different and copy those to your partial dump.

And the write that in.

Or then if you have the full read for the different SW version you could write that in.

And after that you could write that tune in the partial dump over that.

But yes. Lets flash this bin with modified RPM limiter to the car.

And lets see that it works.

So lets go outside the car.

And here is my setup again.

From here I enable the flash voltage.

And then..

Then I will open the siemens ms41 flash tool.

File and partial and...

flash ECU.

Oh ok. Wait..

I don't have ignition on in the car.

Critical error.

I will fix that.

Now we have ignition on.

And lets try again.

Like that. partial...

Flash..

Now it connected.

Here I will choose the flash dump we modified.

Open.

And it started flashing.

Like that.

Lets wait that to finish.

And like that it flashed it.

Now just turn off the ignition and push the car outside to see how this works.

And now when the modified flash dump is in lets see how it works.

So now this should rev up to 7000.

And it was where we set that so everything works.

But that's all from this time. Lets continue with the ms41 in some other video.

How to tune ms41 ECUs (BMW m52/s52 engines): basics - Duration: 18:51.

This time we are going to look into teh Siemens ms41 ECU tuning basics.

You can find these Siemens ms41 engine control units from BMW m52 engines.

And also from s52 engine in US m3 models.

Which is just stroked m52 with more aggressive cams.

So same control unit.

There is also ms41.1 which can be found at least in US m52 engines.

And then there is ms41.2 which can be found from s52 engine.

And lets see that it works.

So lets go outside the car.

And here is my setup again.

From here I enable the flash voltage.

And then..

Then I will open the siemens ms41 flash tool.

File and partial and...

flash ECU.

Oh ok. Wait..

I don't have ignition on in the car.

Critical error.

I will fix that.

Now we have ignition on.

And lets try again.

Like that. partial...

Flash..

Now it connected.

Here I will choose the flash dump we modified.

Open.

And it started flashing.

Like that.

Lets wait that to finish.

And like that it flashed it.

Now just turn off the ignition and push the car outside to see how this works.

And now when the modified flash dump is in lets see how it works.

So now this should rev up to 7000.

And it was where we set that so everything works.

Constitutional Court holds eleventh hearing in impeachment trial - Duration: 2:17.

The eleventh hearing in the impeachment trial against President Park Geun-hye took place

at the Constitutional Court of Korea today.

It looks like it will be more wait than initially forecast to be the earliest date possible.

Kim Ji-yeon reports.

Former K-Sports Foundation Secretary-General Jung Hyun-sik took the stand at Tuesday's

hearing in the impeachment trial of President Park Geun-hye.

Jung said he thought the presidential office supported the foundation and that Choi received

orders from the top office.

He also said Choi interviewed him for a job as an auditor at the foundation... and that

former presidential secretary for policy coordination An Chong-bum called him to congratulate him

on getting the job.

Jung said Choi always had the final say on employment and staffing decisions,... adding

that he was ordered by Choi to use an anonymous cellphone when talking to her.

Former Culture Minister Kim Jong-deok also gave testimony on Tuesday.

He said the creation of a blacklist of thousands of artists and cultural figures critical of

the government, allegedly compiled to exclude them from receiving state funding and partnership,...

was an important part of the Park administration's policies.

He also said the list was created before he was appointed culture minister in 2014.

Meanwhile, the court decided it would hear testimony from eight of the 17 witnesses...

on a list submitted by the president's lawyers.

That list includes Choi Soon-sil and An Chong-Bum ,... who both appeared in court last month.

However, it excludes the heads of major conglomerates with possible ties to the scandal -- such

as SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won , Lotte Group chairman Shin Dong-bin and Posco chairman

Kwon Oh-joon . Both legal teams seemed discontent with the

court's decision.

"The legal team is not satisfied with the court's decision to only take eight out of

the 17 witnesses we've submitted."

"We think the court has sided with the president's lawyers to take eight more witnesses, including

people who already testified."

The court appearance of former presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon, who said he couldn't

attend Tuesday's hearing for health reasons,... has been rescheduled for February 20th.
