Youtube daily report May 14 2018

Hello everyone Welcome on RCTutos.fr

Today we unbox a package from our partner Banggood

The project of the moment is a quadcopter DJI F450 like

a 45cm quadcopter without propellers

the idea is to build the project from A to Z

to have a video drone

the DJi F450 frame was good for the project

so we printed a frame

I will give you the file in description and in our blog on our website

So we received all the material to build the drone

the frame is printed and is about 10€

there is different sizes for feet so you can put a gimball under

we receive propellers 10 inches, 10x4.5

we choosed 2 colors for front and rear

we have servo wires to cable the electronics

we have here a mini camera SQ11

very small camera 2cm

you have some accessories with it

so this small camera records in 720p and 1080p

HD 30fps

the advantage is it's very light and it's a 2cm square

it's about a few grams

it will not weight the drone

you have 100 minuts autonomy with the included battery

here we have a bluetooth module to transfer informations in the quadcopter

with an app you can send a flight map

here a GPS module to locate quadcopter in space

you can do "return to home"

to land on the start point

and for the flight maps, it's the GPS that will know on which point to go

here we have 4 30A ESC

from Racestar

PG30, they work in 3s 4s

for now the quadcopter will fly in 3s

here we have 2212 920kv brushless motors

2 CW and 2 CCW

they run in 2s to 4s

they already are a bit big

so we have 2 motors of each rotation

Here we have the PBD, that dispatches the power to ESCs

this will regulate power to motors to stabilize

here the flight controller omnibus F4 V3

that runs with betflight, the program used to choose the quadcopter setup

you can choose between a stabilized or agressive driving

and here we have leds

a red one for the rear with buzzer

and a white led to keep the eye on the orientation of the drone

now we will fly with eyes, not FPV

soon we will integrate an eachine 3 in 1 module FPV

like we already installed in others RC like tank

average 20 dollars

and with the mask we will receive image in FPV

here a receiver for flysky FSi6

not a great range

someone told me ranges are better at FRSKY

for now we have flysky so we grab a receiver

soon we will choose a better range radio

so about the project

it's a project I make with another friend that build the same drone

we have the help of another friend specialized in quadcopters

he will give us the informations and help to setup machines

so there will not have a special setup video

and programmation for now

because personnaly i dont know a lot in this

we will enjoy the help of our friend to work on the project

so you have here, and in the description and on our blog website

you have all the setup to build the drone

If you want to setup the quad, i suggest you to have the help of a person that know what to do

that will give you the good informations to setup

you find all at banggood, it's about 175 dollars

compared to a RTF drone sold 1000 or 1500€ in shops depending of ugrades

this quad will have the same options than a phantom 4 DJI for example

or mavic pro

for 1752 dollars

except transmitter, batteries and camera part

you will have a quad that will be programmable and with fly maps

and you will be able to make great videos

for video, it will be with this small camera, waiting to install a gopro, we have a gopro 2 in stock

it will be next step

for now we will build it in off mode, and we will share pictures on Facebook and Instagram

Thanks for watching

find all infos in the description under the video, and on our website

see you soon, have a good day

OWN the DAY 3 | Off Grid NOMAD Style - Duration: 5:27.

Breakfast is the most important DECISION of the day,

not the most important MEAL of the day.

Contrary to popular belief!

This decision is going to influence all other decisions in your day and determine

the quality of how you operate.

It's simple. The decision is whether or not you are going to BREAK your FAST.

We'll talk about fasting a little later, but for now we'll address the majority of us

who do like to eat breakfast in the morning.

Aubrey goes into three Universal Nutrition principles:

"In 1822, according to Dr. Stephan Guyenet, people consumed on average the amount of sugar

currently found in a single can of Coke or Sprite every five days. Today, we consume that amount

every seven hours, with young males leading the way, consuming up to one hundred pounds of sugar per year!

Our diabolical addiction to this sweet stuff has not only been linked to obesity, diabetes,

heart disease, and cancer, but it has also been shown to degrade the skin and contribute to premature aging.

There's no need to sugarcoat it anymore: extreme sugar consumption is frucking us up."

Have you ever truly noticed what we're offered in grocery store breakfast isles here in America?

Sugar on sugar on carbs which turn into sugar.

What you're doing to yourself when start your day with sugary poptarts and cereals or a sweetened,

milky coffee drink is you're hopping on the craving train, getting a high jolt of energy

to feed your secret sugar addiction, then crashing 45 minutes later,

requiring more sugary snacks to boost you to the artificially energetic level you were at before.

The process then goes on all day long.

Our bodies are designed to use a balance of unrefined carbs, quality fats and proteins

as our sources of FUEL. Quality fat slows down the absorption of glucose in the bloodstream,

providing satiation while helping to avoid major insulin spikes.

"There are bad fats. Fried oils, refined fats and trans fats like you find in potato chips or margarine

drive inflammation and make you feel sluggish and should be limited or avoided.

As he states in the book, the good fats to start your morning include:

Truly, we almost never eat breakfast and that's Aubrey's third principle.

This is where we get back into the concept of "fasting."

Fasting is to abstain from food and drink for a specific period of time.

It's been around for thousands of years, and there are many associated health benefits

such as weight loss, lower blood pressure, and decreased inflammation!

Do some research of your own on fasting, it's a really interesting topic.

It's similar to how we would eat as hunter gatherers, having one meal or less a day

and there's a reason this is implemented in so many religions across the world.

As you make the decision on whether or not breakfast is right for you, keep in mind your day's intent.

Everyone is trying to prescribe a universal solution to health, be it a diet or work out regimen,

but all for one and one for all (in this sense) isn't real. It doesn't work. We all come from different backgrounds

with different blood types and body shapes, different cultural customs, work lives

and amounts of free time. To be most healthy in your life and your body, you need to find what works best for you.

What is your intent? What do you want? What are the results you are looking for?

Your diet and exercise should reflect this.

Our intent is usually to fuel ourselves in the morning so we can bust out work at the coffee shop.

On more relaxed days, I like to eat almond or peanut butter on fruit.

Yes, fruit is made up of a LOT of sugar, but it's also packed full of good fibers

that help break down that sugar in our bodies.

My friend, @TheChiaBabe on Instagram is a health wizard, advocating the benefits of fruits, vegetables and a plant based lifestyle.

She's incredible and has all kinds of alternative vegan options for those things suggested in Aubrey's book.

It's she and Drew who initially started us on the path to health in the first place. Thanks guys!!

You are always so interested in what we're eating in the Scamp so here's one of my go-to morning recipes.

To make this latte I use a Ninja Bullet given to me by my friends Jill and Dave.

I just used it to grind my coffee and now I'm going to pour in my cowboy coffee.

I made this in a different video and I'll put that link in the YouTube description.

Next is some almond milk.

Some coconut oil, this is what makes the latte frothy.

It keeps you fueled for a long time and supposedly slows down the effects of then caffeine in the coffee.

Some cayenne pepper.

Some 100% cacao.

****

And there's your latte.

It's way better than my matcha latte.

We hope you found this information helpful in your quest to own your day and own your life.

We'll talk to you in the comments and see you in chapter 4!

CONTINUUM // Justin Taylor - Duration: 3:56.

My aim with this CD was to show that they have far more

in common than you might imagine.

Both of are strikingly original,

and they're both constantly renewing themselves with each new piece:

with every single one of Scarlatti's sonatas, each time it's an entirely new universe

and it's the same for Ligeti.

Also, they're both composers who are searching for new sonorities on the harpsichord,

so not exactly the kind of harpsichord sound the listener is used to.

Naturally they're not searching for the same things, because Scarlatti is of the 18th century

and Ligeti of the 20th, so the sonorities are going in two rather different directions,

but undeniably there's a really remarkable degree of virtuosity shared by both composers.

For all these reasons, I thought it would be intriguing to bring Scarlatti and Ligeti together.

The choice wasn't easy, and it certainly wasn't a brief task:

working your way through more than 500 sonatas isn't something you can do in half a day!

Among all his sonatas, I was trying to find really varied works

that represent quite different worlds,

in their palette of sounds, their writing, their virtuosity:

the sonatas that have a real sense of individual taste, a genuinely Scarlattian perfume

– because there are some sonatas where immediately you know it's Scarlatti,

and these are the ones I've favoured.

And as if by chance these too are the ones that gave the most responsive echo to the pieces by Ligeti.

There's the Hungarian Passacaglia that he wrote in 1978,

in which he adopts for his own purposes the principle of a ground bass,

which is of course an idea much used in the baroque period,

and he makes it apparent in the title, 'Passacaglia'.

But he brings in his own researches,

particularly about the nature of time,

because over that ostinato bass line that runs throughout the piece

Ligeti superimposes rhythms that become shorter and shorter,

faster and faster, and suddenly the impression you have is that the piece is speeding up

until it seems to become completely static.

As you can appreciate, it's a really interesting piece.

Then there's the Hungarian Rock, which also has a rhythm running right through it

from start to finish, this time a really frenetic rhythm.

At the end of the CD, there's the piece Continuum,

At the end of the CD, there's the piece Continuum,

The point of departure for Continuum was a parodox that Ligeti wanted to embody in music:

the idea of creating a continuity with discontinuous sounds.

It is the speed of repetition of these discontinuous sounds that creates an illusion of continuity

just as in the cinema, where a rapid succession of images creates the illusion of a continuous flow.

The title refers of course to that seminal piece by Ligeti,

but also for me that word symbolizes the kind of connection that I find so interesting

between Scarlatti and Ligeti,

that sense of continuity between these two worlds.

It's obviously not easy to find a harpsichord suitable for both Scarlatti and Ligeti.

Ligeti was most familiar with the so-called modern harpsichords, instruments made by Pleyel

where a lot of features are taken over from piano manufacture:

metal frames, pedals to effect a rapid change of registers

that possibility of shifting registers at speed

interested a great many composers around that time,

but Ligeti not so much.

And that is exactly what convinces me that what really interested him was the sound itself of the harpsichord,

which is why I've chosen a copy of an historic instrument

made by Anthony Sidey in the 1980s. It's a harpsichord I'm particularly fond of,

and one that I've already recorded on, by the way, in my first CD album devoted to Forqueray.

Taxi Drivers and Chauffeurs Career Video - Duration: 1:42.

Taxi drivers, ride-hailing drivers,

and chauffeurs

drive passengers to and from

the places they need to go—

whether they're in a big hurry,

or prefer to arrive in style.

They must know their local area in detail,

including popular destinations,

emergency services,

and the routes that best avoid

rush hour traffic.

Drivers follow local regulations,

and keep tabs on weather

and road conditions that affect driving.

Taxi drivers pick up passengers

from taxi lines at airports and hotels,

or respond to dispatcher calls

to pick up a customer.

They charge based on a meter

that runs while driving,

and take breaks between passengers.

Ride-hailing drivers

set their own hours,

and use their personal vehicles

to pick up passengers

who request service

through a smartphone app.

Chauffeurs drive limousines

or private cars to take passengers

on prescheduled trips.

They may work for one person,

a business or government agency,

or drive a large hotel van.

Paratransit drivers operate vehicles

equipped with wheelchair lifts

and other equipment

to accommodate elderly passengers,

or those with disabilities.

Though many taxi drivers and chauffeurs

work full time,

part-time driving is not uncommon.

Schedules may include late nights,

early mornings, weekends, and holidays.

Drivers experience the stress

of heavy traffic,

and must load heavy baggage.

Drivers must have a regular driver's license,

but there are

no formal education requirements…

on-the-job training may be provided.

Some positions also require

a taxi or limousine license.

Nguyễn Trần Trung Quân – Trong Trí Nhớ Của Anh Reaction [Koreans Hoon & Cormie] / Hoontamin - Duration: 11:14.

Today we'll watch a Vietnamese music video that was recommended by subscribers

There are many Vietnamese songs that Cormie likes

Read it

The music video we are going to watch today is

This is the singer and the title

I don't really know what the title means

When I wrote it on the translator

It was kind of weird

It translated to 'In English Memory'

There are some times when the translator makes strange sentences

Because we weren't sure if it was correct or not

We just ignored it

Let's go watch it

Oh, there are English subtitles

What?

Why her hair?

Did something happen?

If you break up, they cut their hair

Really?

Just to change the mood

Is this scene when they first met?

I'm fed up with the scene of dropping the book

I think I've seen it a thousand times in Korea

Cute!

It's a sweet couple's story

No one has ever shaved me like that

She misses him

You are moved by that?

Cute

Is that blood?

Drive looking to the front

You shouldn't drive and do other things

Why are there so many car accidents on music videos?

They didn't just break up

There was a sad story

Since you are a sensitive girl, tell your thought about it

It's sad

Did I get it right?

Didn't he give his heart to the girl?

It looked like a heart

She was not good at drawing

Is that why she suddenly became so talented?

His life's mission was art

And as the she receives the his heart

She'll be living with him for the rest of his life

So the last scene means that

Even though the man has died

She is still with him

This is a little sad

I got goose bumps

I can't believe tears gathered in my eye in this obvious story

Because in Korea there have been a lot of these obvious stories for a long time

Then what am I

Look your eyes are shining because of the tears

I hope a car accident does not happen in the next music video

We watched two long music videos

I don't feel good because both of them have car accidents

Before, many Vietnamese idols were recommended

Recently we've been getting a lot of heart touching ballads

Since we are not music experts

There is a limit to interpret it musically

And we are not a critical channel

That was a long excuse, anyway

It was a good song

And the music video is emotional, too

I love emotional songs like this

Actually, it was good just listening the first line

It is Cormie's favorite style

So these days, when we get recommendations

I used to get a lot of recommendations

But now, there are more comments saying 'Cormie please'

I can't see because of my tears

But I was the one who chose the song

I didn't know what song it was

But I think I did a good choice

It's really sad that she cuts her hair and lives his life

She did what she used to do with him, in the first part

That was really sad

I think the girl looks a bit like Song Ji-hyo

She's pretty

And he's handsome

Our trip to the recommended videos continues

The LED Traffic Light and the Danger of "But Sometimes!" - Duration: 18:31.

Well you seemed to like the jacket, so…

I'll keep it.

I have a bit of a fascination with stop lights (or traffic lights, if you prefer).

They boil down to remarkably simple devices, little more than indicators, but thanks to

driver's education and the magic of the human brain, they are remarkably effective

at safely controlling traffic at intersections.

Well, most of the time.

Now, there's so much to get into regarding traffic lights.

Traffic engineering is a fascinating subject which I don't feel qualified to discuss,

but there's quite the rabbit hole to fall into.

This video is about a simple but groundbreaking innovation in the traffic light and the lessons

it can tell us about innovation in general.

This is about the LED traffic light, and the caution of "but sometimes".

I live in an area of my town that's not terribly well traveled.

Though there are many 4 lane roads with speed limits of 35 to 40 miles an hour, the traffic

volume honestly doesn't often justify having two lanes in each direction.

Many of the stop lights in this area have been neglected, and are still using good-'ol

fashioned incandescent bulbs with colored glass lenses.

Actually, some are so old that they still have the written text "WALK' and "DON'T

WALK" in their pedestrian signals, and there are even a few that use the old 8 inch lenses

for the green and yellow lights, with only the important red light getting a full 12 inch lens.

Granted, these stop lights have had their control systems upgraded over the years.

There are vehicle presence detectors embedded in the road surface to alter their timing

and behavior, and they are equipped with photocells to detect the tuned strobe light on emergency

vehicles and stop traffic in opposing directions.

And some have even had countdown timers added to the pedestrian signals.

But the fixtures themselves have remained mostly unchanged.

They are still the same incandescent traffic lights that may very well have been in place

for a good number of decades.

I should add that vehicle presence detection has been around long before the LED traffic

light, and it's very likely these intersections have the same control equipment they've

always had.

But in any case, the fact that they are still using incandescent lamp technology...

is a little odd.

Setting aside the nostalgic or aesthetic reasons to prefer an incandescent stop light (I'll

admit the fade-in fade-out as each light changes states is charming), the LED traffic light

is just objectively better in nearly every respect.

For example,

Incandescent stoplight fixtures, because they are designed to be opened to replace the bulb,

typically get dirty on the inside over time.

And it seems the technicians who replace the lamps often don't seem bothered to clean

the lenses or reflectors.

This leads to many lights with a dull appearance that's hard to see in bright sunlight.

This obviously isn't great, and is actually kinda dangerous,

but whatever.

The LED light, on the other hand, is completely sealed.

In fact...

here's an LED traffic light module.

Yes, they really are this big, they just seem much smaller when they're grandstanding

on their pedestals or hanging up high in the air . These are designed with the ability

to replace the lenses in existing incandescent lights and function as a retrofit device,

as well as simply be the default standard for new traffic light installations.

Because the entire module is replaced if needed, it can be completely sealed.

LED lights thus don't end up looking like...

that.

These LED modules use about a 10th the energy of the incandescent lights they replace, which

is not only great for energy savings, but it means battery backups for the lighting

control system can keep the intersection controlled for hours even during a blackout.

And of course, they last so much longer than the light bulbs in an old fashioned fixture do.

This 116 watt light from Sylvania only lasts 8,000 hours, which may seem like a lot, but

assuming a roughly 50/50 on time for green and red, that won't even cover two years.

And since pretty much every intersection has at least 2 lights visible in each direction,

there's a total of at least 16 of these bad boys in a very small intersection, not

including yellow.

This would mean that a light will go out about every two months, and let me tell you, that's

remarkably in line with how often I see a light go out at any given intersection.

In fact, on the day I left to start taking photos of the stoplights around me like the

big 'ol dork that I am, this light burnt out.

Granted, there are two other lights providing redundancy, but they're also really dirty

and hard to see anyway.

I went out again a few days later to take some photos I had forgotten to take, and now

this light is also out.

What fun!

At this one intersection, including all arrows, pedestrian signals, and standard orb indicators,

there are 94 lights just waiting to burn out.

Conversely, you almost never see an LED stoplight with a signal that's out.

They last so long that it's a very rare occurrence.

It does happen, it's not like they last forever.

But even when they do fail, some designs don't even fail all at once, with this module still

mostly functional save for some dead diodes.

In the past two years, I've only seen one LED light completely fail anywhere, whereas

I've seen about a dozen lights go out just in my neighborhood.

Now, I can't tell you why my local streets and sanitation department (or whatever agency

is tasked with maintaining these specific traffic controls)

hasn't invested in retrofitting these stoplights

with LED replacements.

They're just an odd holdout, I guess, or perhaps they think it's cheaper to just

do things as they are.

News flash-- it isn't, because if these lights do use 116 watt bulbs, then with pedestrian

signals included, at any given time the intersection is using around a kilowatt and a half (or more),

meaning it costs about $3.60 to operate daily assuming average rates in Illinois.

Add to that the cost of relamping the fixtures every two years ,

or far more likely the reactionary

maintenance when a lamp fails multiple times a year, and it seems really foolish to still

be using these traffic lights as they are.

Especially because these modules typically end up on eBay or elsewhere for about $10 each.

I don't know how much they cost new from the manufacturer, but I can't imagine they're

terribly expensive.

But, when the LED stoplight first made its way onto the scene, one of its central advantages

became a disadvantage.

See, because the good 'ol incandescent bulb is so terribly inefficient, it spews a lot

of heat out all sides and kept the fixtures toasty warm.

This had the lovely side effect of keeping snow and ice from building up on them in cold climates.

Many municipalities started discovering that their new LED fixtures, which are 10 times

more efficient and thus release just 10% the heat,

didn't do that.

In bad snow storms with high winds, it is very possible for the snow to make its way

past the visor and stick to the face of the stoplight.

Not producing enough heat to melt this snow, the LED stop light might become impossible

to see in this scenario.

This caused quite a few accidents, some of which were regrettably fatal.

However, if the drivers at fault remembered their driver's education, a stoplight that

isn't indicating should be treated as a stop sign, turning the intersection into an

all-way stop.

But people are stupid, so accidents happen.

As you may imagine, the news reports started flooding in.

"Energy efficient stop lights cause accidents!"

"These new LED stoplights can't melt snow!"

"The green revolution know no bounds--cold traffic lights leave drivers confused!"

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

The really stupid articles pointed out that, while a solution might be possible, it would

eat into the energy savings presented by the LEDs.

That is a really dumb argument, as we'll discuss momentarily.

I even recall a news report when I was younger suggesting that a heated surface would use

MORE energy than an incandescent traffic light, so really, what's the point?!

This is the danger of "But sometimes".

It goes a little something like this: The LED stoplight is more energy efficient, costs

less to operate, requires less maintenance, can allow for a feasible battery backup solution,

lasts longer, are brighter and easier to see (particularly in direct sunlight) BUT SOMETIMES

snow and ice builds up on them, so clearly they are bad.

Ugh, this makes me so disappointed in humanity!

When there's a new innovation which changes how we do things for the better, its benefits

are obvious.

The LED stoplight is a perfect example.

It allows stoplights to better accomplish their rather important task of being visible,

makes them more reliable than (and with battery backup makes them functionally superior to)

an incandescent light, and saves municipalities thousands of dollars, with Wisconsin reporting

in 2009 that they save $750,000 in energy costs annually, which isn't even mentioning

maintenance costs.

However, when the "But Sometimes" rears its ugly head, people tend to freak out.

Suddenly, all those benefits go away, because in this one particular facet of stoplight

functionality, the wasteful and maintenance-heavy incandescent lamp is accidentally superior.

Suddenly, when the new solution presents a new problem, all we think about is the problem.

Which leads to the truly stupid part of this argument.

But Sometimes occurs only some of the time!

It's a sometimes!

Articles that complain about a potential solution requiring more energy, and thus reducing the efficiency

of the new LED stop light, just kinda gloss over the fact that on every day it's NOT snowing,

the issue is completely irrelevant.

Sure, if we add heaters to the LED module to melt snow it might need more power, but

only when it's snowing, dingus!

It wouldn't take too much imagination to enable wireless control of an intersection's

stoplights to turn on the heaters while it snows.

Even if the lights used a bit more power while the heaters are on, the other 300 days of

the year when it's NOT snowing don't just go away.

It doesn't take too much thinking to realize that it's still saving a lot of energy over

the long run.

And again, the traffic light is not at fault when an accident occurs.

All drivers know (or at least should know) that a malfunctioning traffic light means

you must stop and proceed with caution.

But we trust people so little on remembering this simple procedure that nearly every intersection

has a folded up stop sign ready to be deployed when the traffic lights fail.

I'm not opposed to that, I think it's a good idea, but in reality it shouldn't

be necessary.

Also, in personal experience, a snow storm severe enough to cause buildup on the traffic

light lenses is pretty out of the ordinary.

I've never personally encountered a traffic light that's completely obscured with snow.

I've seen some partially, but never enough to make the signal impossible to distinguish.

After all, there are pretty big visors over the lenses, so it's got to be a real blizzard

to cause a problem.

And really, in those conditions, you should just avoid driving altogether.

This isn't to say that the problem doesn't happen.

Surely it does.

But come on, it's not frequent at all.

Now, the correct response to the "but sometimes" is to account for that sometimes and solve

the problem.

One potential way that doesn't use any energy is through an altered visor with a scoop on

top designed to redirect wind to flow across the lens and blow snow off of it.

But for those wanting a more high-tech solution, well take a look at this.

General Electric now sells what they call "GTX Flex LED Heated Shell".

These traffic light modules have defroster wires across their face, just like the rear

window of your car.

What's more, they have sensors onboard measuring temperature and humidity

to determine when icing conditions are likely and automatically switch on the heaters.

The spec sheet says these heaters use only 30 watts, which means even when they are all

on, a three-light traffic light is using less power than a single incandescent bulb.

Not much less, but I must remind you that the need for the heater is rare, and only a sometimes.

It looks like this is a relatively new product, with the site touting it as NEW and the copyright

date on the spec sheet being 2016.

So it seems we got along well enough without this innovation for, uh, for a while.

Probably because people realized how infrequent the problem actually is, but anyway--the problem

has been solved.

The "but sometimes" is now a never.

The moral of this story is that when faced with a unique, unforeseen, or difficult problem

that comes about as a result of doing things in a different way, don't just give up!

It's beyond foolish to fly in the face of progress, especially when the result of the

progress is so obviously better, just because there's a tiny little sometimes maybe issue

that we haven't had before.

I'll bet you no municipality that has switched to LED traffic signals wants to go back to

the old way of doing things.

But that's what news articles and media coverage like this seem to advocate for.

Now, obviously I don't want us to not acknowledge problems.

That would be silly.

But when discussing these problems, we need to look at them from all sides.

Just how bad is the problem, really?

How often does it occur?

What would we be giving up if we abandoned our efforts, and should we abandon them?

What can we do to combat the problem?

Does the problem need a technical fix, or do we need to re-educate people and adjust

their behavior?

Perhaps the problem isn't so much a problem, rather it's a need for change elsewhere.

But for goodness sake, we need to work to solve the problem.

Every innovation has changed how we do things in some way.

That's the very idea of progress.

Sometimes this change brings new issues to light, and may bring inconveniences from time

to time.

But I don't think this should be seen as a reason to stop progress.

I hope that as new technologies and innovations become available that provide us advantages

just as the LED traffic light has that we don't simply focus on the new problems they

might create.

Together, we should be asking how to solve those new problems.

When we ask that question and work towards the answers, we can truly make progress.

Ok, so there's some other stuff I want to bring up real quick.

First, I'm officially launching my second channel.

Head on over to Tecnhnology Connections 2 if you'd like to see what's on the inside

of one of these LED modules.

I've always been a little curious.

Don't, uh, don't go over just yet, hang on a sec.

Ok, well here's a card, but the endscreen will have it, too.

And there's a link down below.

One thing that I've noticed change about traffic light behavior is the timing of the

right turn arrow.

I realize this whole video has been from the perspective of the US, where we drive on the

right and our traffic signals look like,

well like that

and all the things you've been seeing in the

video, so maybe this isn't a thing in other countries, and honestly this could be a regional

thing within the US.

But at intersections where there are both left turn only and right turn only lanes,

the right turn lane will typically get a green arrow while the opposing traffic gets a protected

left, because no one will be coming from the left hand side going straight across.

It used to be very common for the green arrow to light up as soon as the the yellow light

appeared, which was great because it meant if you were turning right, you knew that you

could just proceed even though forward traffic was about to stop.

Most intersections these days seem to wait until the opposing traffic gets their protected

left before illuminating the right turn arrow, which means you need to stop before you actually

get that arrow.

I suppose this might be a safety thing, but really I can't see how much safer it is because

pedestrians would not be entering the intersection at all while there's a protected left because

vehicles will be crossing their path no matter which direction they are going.

And it's really annoying in this age of distracted driving, because some drivers see

the light turning red, come to a stop, and then look at their phones without realizing

there's a turn arrow now illuminated.

If the arrow were already lit, they could have just kept going and annoyed someone elsewhere

Going back to my particular town's situation, there's one intersection near me that's

an absolute hodge podge of stuff.

Almost nothing matches anymore in this intersection.

There are individual LED retrofits among incandescent lights, such as this pair of signals where

there is only one LED signal among the 10 total lights.

But most amusingly, the pedestrian signals are almost all completely different.

There are still some old written Walk/Don't Walk signs combines into a single fixture,

then there's the newer pictographic

signals with the talk to the hand and the walking white guy, then there's an LED version of

the same thing with two distinct shapes, and there's an LED signal where the shapes are

combined, and finally there's ONE that has a countdown timer.

That strikes me as particularly odd because it means the controller for this intersection

is capable of driving a countdown timer, so clearly it has been updated within the last

decade or two, but there are some comparatively ancient fixtures here.

I realize this style of light where there are multiple diodes right at the face that

fail over time is kind of an old style at this point.

Most newer traffic lights are like these, where they are designed to mimic how incandescent

fixtures look.

In fact, GE calls these "incandescent look".

That's part of why I want to check out the innards of one of these.

I doubt there's a single 10W LED chip in here, so I would imagine they also don't

necessarily fail all together, but it would be a lot harder to tell if it's failing

at a glance.

I glossed over the vehicle presence detection a little bit and just showed what it looks

like, and sometimes this isn't even visible.

Generally, there will be a loop of wire embedded below the road surface that's designed...

(camera beeped)

Really?

I glossed over the vehicle presence detection a little bit and just showed what it looks

like, and sometimes this isn't even visible.

Generally, there will be loops of wire embedded below the road surface that are designed to

detect a change in their magnetic field brought about by a large metal object above them

(such as a vehicle)

You can often see these, particularly if they were added to an already existing road surface.

Sometimes you'll notice them way far back from the intersection, and by adding them

here the traffic control system can count how many vehicles are approaching and thus

how much time is needed for them to cross the intersection.

There's some pretty clever thought going into all these systems.

Oh, and sometimes you'll see cameras up where the traffic signals are, and some of

these are used for presence detection using computer vision.

Also, the emergency vehicle detectors are a pretty neat thing that perhaps you know

how they work, but I'll tell ya anyway.

I said "tuned strobe light" earlier.

What I mean by that is that emergency vehicles have a single white strobe light, often in

the center of their light bars, which flashes at a very specific frequency.

It's often hard to see on video because... strobe lights and video just don't

really get along, but it's this one here on this ambulance.

The traffic light controller is looking for a signal at that specific frequency coming

from the photocells up top, and when it sees it it will begin stopping traffic.

These white indicators are used to confirm to the driver of the emergency vehicle that

the signal was received and that opposing traffic is being stopped.

In Illinois, where I live, the lights will flash in the direction the emergency vehicle

is coming from, and they will illuminate steadily for opposing traffic to warn them an emergency

vehicle is coming.

Interestingly, this isn't really taught in driver's ed, and the lights don't have

any sort of sign to explain their purpose, but hopefully enough people have figured this

out to make them useful.

Lastly, for those towns who like the charm of these old 8 inch stop light fixtures, you'll

be happy to know that GE (and probably others, too) make LED retrofits for these.

So come on, guys.

Let's get with the program.

Randi Zuckerberg on Entrepreneurship - Duration: 0:44.

I think there's a view in society right now that an entrepreneur in America

looks a certain way people have an image of what an entrepreneur looks like and

my mission my passion is to show people that entrepreneurs come in all shapes

and sizes ages ethnicities socioeconomic backgrounds this country is built on the

backs of entrepreneurs and small business owners everywhere around the

country so it's never been a better time to take a risk and to become an

entrepreneur and quite frankly I can't wait to work for all of you one day

Randi Zuckerberg on Education and Work - Duration: 2:13.

we are always hearing stories of a tech company that started a week ago and then

sells or a celebrity that gets discovered out of nowhere these are the

stories that we glorify but nothing in life is an overnight success

everything's about hard work I know there was a famous baseball pitcher who

said you know the more I practice the luckier I get

that's something that's always resonated with me that there is no there's no such

thing as a get-rich-quick scheme there's no such thing as as just instant success

it's all about how hard you work that's the only thing that differentiates you

in business the digital divide is definitely going to be one of the most

pressing issues that's going to come to a head in the next few years because we

have this you know these few emerging pockets in our country where people are

incredibly tech savvy they have access to all the latest and greatest tools

they're well-positioned to take advantage of these multibillion-dollar

new economies that are starting and then often right next door to those

communities you have communities that don't even have reliable Wi-Fi that that

don't have tools or there is no tech or STEM education happening in schools and

so we see in this country that's side by side we have people who are poised to

take advantage of the future and people who are just gonna be totally left

behind and that's something that I don't think any of us should feel comfortable

in an economy where people are gonna be totally left out of all of the new jobs

and industry to come I think in order to bridge the digital divide has we have to

tackle this on a few fronts we have to tackle it certainly through education

some of the great things that you guys are doing at Shenandoah University with

inviting the broader community into events for education not even just

students on campus because we have to educate people of all ages and

socioeconomic status and background I think working with local telecom

companies to make sure that they're making it a priority to have affordable

and fast Wi-Fi in all areas not just areas where people can afford to pay for

it
