around the mailing tube

here's mine once it was cut out then I just removed the tape and I took the cap

from the other end and placed it on the longer end that I just cut

to make the cap for my pencil I am going to use this paper straw container and I got this in

the dollar bin at Target I removed some of the label I didn't remove it all

Liverpool 's Champions League parade route confirmed ahead of final against Real Madrid ● News #LFC - Duration: 2:14.

Victory in Kiev, Ukraine, would see the team return on Sunday May 27 to take an open-top

coach starting along Liverpool's waterside.

Plans have been put in place for a victory parade for Liverpool should they win the Champions

League later this month.

Because of the logistics involved, complicated by the city hosting the Three Festivals Tall

Ships Regatta and the Bordeaux Wine Festival the same weekend,

proposals have already been drawn up ahead of Jurgen Klopp's side playing Real Madrid

in Kiev on May 26.

Victory in Kiev would see the team return on Sunday May 27 to take an open-top coach

along Liverpool's waterside with the route finishing close to the Liverpool Olympia concert

venue.

"Regardless of whether you are a Red, Blue or not a football fan at all, an event like

this has a hugely positive impact and will once again shine the international spotlight

on the city," said Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson.

"We are all tremendously proud of LFC's achievement and you can already feel the buzz around the

city ahead of the final.

"The club requested the parade takes place on the Sunday,

and even though it's already a busy day for the city, we want to make sure we are ready

to give them the heroes' welcome they deserve should they win.

"I understand there will be disappointment for those fans who are unable to get back

from Kiev in time,

but it was a similar situation in 2005 and we have to be guided by the club in terms

of the date and time.

"We're keeping everything crossed for the final and hope the team and the fans do Liverpool

proud in Kiev as they have throughout the competition."

♠ THE NEW "KANZIR"!! (4) | MapleRoyals (C) ♠ - Duration: 7:28.

Hey, what's up guys?

Jordan here.

I'm going to do a little bit more scrolling, again.

You guys asked for this.

I didn't want to have to do this, but I guess I will just...

...continue to scroll that dagger with a 30%.

You guys forced me by my hands.

I—I'm going to have to do it.

So it all comes down to this moment.

Alright, let's just get this over with...

I'm just kidding. ;3

Yeah, I'm not that stupid, okay?

I'm just going to stop the dagger right there.

Most of you said to use an event scroll.

But I think it's just better if I leave it at one slot because I'm not going to be using this dagger for myself

Instead, I'm going to be selling it.

Maybe, check the description to see where I'm going to be selling it at on the MapleRoyals forum.

So if you want this dagger for yourself... shoutout to IcedCreams...

He's been asking me for this dagger for like four months—or six months—I don't know—I don't remember.

But yeah, if you if you really want this dagger, the link is going to be in the description.

Anyway, this is—this is done with. I don't need to pay attention to that anymore.

What about this pirate top? Should I scroll this?

Now, this actually has more impact than this because I'm actually going to be using this top for myself.

I'm actually having like more attached feelings to this top than I do with this dagger.

So I don't know I might scroll this later... maybe... I really don't care for the bottom.

Yeah, I'll just even toss it out.

BOOP!

BOOP!!

BOOP!!!

All right, so these are going to be the items that I will scroll in this episode.

Most of them are weapons... except for this bottom.

I know that I do have a bunch of face accessories, but I don't think I have enough face accessory scrolls.

Anyway, since I managed to get a 117 attack Stonetooth Sword.

It was about four slots when I did the third slot and it failed.

Yeah, I got up to 117 att, so let's see if that can happen again!

And I'm being totally sarcastic because it's probably going to fail or explode on the first slot.

Oh, well, look. What do you freaking know? I only have one?

It looks like I'm going to have to do a little bit of shopping.

All right, packed channel. (not really lol)

Anyway, let's search for "Two Handed"

Nothing comes up. Is there like a hyphen in the middle? There we go!

Okay, close that inventory.

So this one is 3mil. This is 5mil, 6mil,...

But these are all like one quantity.

I don't know if I want to use this and then get left out, okay?

You know what? This is 3mil and the Owl costed 3mil. So basically I'm not losing out on any money.

There we go, so I have one.

Let's—let's buy another!

So, what did I buy so far? I bought 4 Two-Handed scrolls, Dagger, and I bought Face Accessory.

Make sure to untick that. I would definitely not want to use a White Scroll

All right, here goes nothing!

Wow, it failed on the first try...

I can either choose to proceed scrolling or should I just toss this out because it failed on the first try?

I'll just continue, I mean...

See that one worked. Now, how about the next one?

Omg this is awful. *cough*

I'll just go again...

Oh no, okay. That's—that's where you stop scrolling! I'm just gonna have to end it right there.

If it fails three times, it's really not worth it.

All right, let's see if this fails on the first slot...

Nope it—it—it just destroys... yeah...

Wands never work in my favor. I was actually planning on using that for my bishop (Avet).

Why does the Stonetooth work, but not the wand?

What is life?

We're all about taking risks!

I'm starting to hate 30% scrolling...

*cries / laughs*

Well, apparently this actually worked.

Unfortunately, I didn't—I was unable to record it because it just didn't record correctly.

but basically I scrolled this branch nose with to 70% Face for Avoidability Scrolls and it worked.

Then, I decided to use a 30% scroll for the last slot and that also worked.

So, I forgive you 30% scrolling.

You may have exploded my two other items, but the 30% scrolling still works.

Yeah, I guess I'll see you next time!

But yeah, this is definitely my worst scrolling yet.

You know what? I need to stop being a little b&$#%, alright?

If I've gone this far with this dagger, then why should I be scared about this top?

So I'm going to do it!

I'm just gonna scroll it and get it over with.

Oh f&$%...

Open records request reveals shocking e mail from Kraft scientis - Duration: 4:31.

Open records request reveals shocking e-mail from Kraft scientist claiming the IARC

is killing us!

by: Isabelle Z.

If the top cancer research agency in the world links one of your products to cancer, what

should you do?

The responsible thing would be to pull the product from the market and try to get to

the bottom of the situation.

If you feel theyre wrong, the most obvious course of action would be to produce evidence

showing that your product does not, in fact, cause cancer.

However, many food industry players affected by the International Agency for Research on

Cancer (IARC)s findings have chosen to attack the group instead, which can only mean

one thing: Their products are indeed dangerous, and they cant prove theyre not.

This is likely why former Kraft General Foods, Inc. scientist James Coughlin wanted to go

after the group.

In email correspondence with retired Syngenta toxicologist Timothy Pastoor and Monsanto

public relations man Jay Byrne, Coughlin said that he had been fighting IARC forever

and recounted a period during which he criticized the group to a House staffer tasked with stripping

U.S. funding from the IARC.

In the emails, he expressed his happiness about the House going after the IARCs NIH

funding, saying, Its about time! Mentioning ingredients like sucralose and

aspartame, he suggested they all get together and devise a way to expose the international

cancer agency, saying IARC is killing us!

Same story, different players We also saw this happen with glyphosate, a

chemical found in Monsantos popular Roundup weed killer.

When the group labeled it as being probably carcinogenic to humans in 2015, Monsanto

went after them.

The IARC reported that there was limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans for

non-Hodgkins lymphoma and they also said there was convincing evidence it

caused cancer in animals.

Monsanto suddenly found itself facing lawsuits from cancer patients and farmers alike.

Support our mission and enhance your own self-reliance: The laboratory-verified Organic Emergency

Survival Bucket provides certified organic, high-nutrition storable food for emergency

preparedness.

Completely free of corn syrup, MSG, GMOs and other food toxins.

Ultra-clean solution for years of food security.

Learn more at the Health Ranger Store.

So what did they do in response?

Did they come up with proof that glyphosate is safe and the IARC is wrong?

No.

Instead, they went after the group with some of their favorite tools: smear campaigns,

misinformation, and propaganda.

As a matter of fact, they started preparing their attack ahead of the decision being handed

down, enlisting lobbyists, PR experts and scientists to orchestrate an outcry over the

classification before it even happened which means they must have known the decision would

not go their way because the truth is not on their side.

According to internal company emails, Monsanto launched a concerted effort to discredit the

IARC.

They tried to have reporters and scientists plant seeds of doubt by claiming the IARCs

report was based on incomplete information something that was later shown to be untrue.

Then, they used their political clout to enlist the help of the chairman of the House Committee

on Science, Space & Technology, Rep. Lamar Smith, to open up a hearing that directly

attacked the IARCs world-class scientists.

Cancer is now the second-leading killer in the United States.

Given how difficult it can be to treat, prevention is essential, and that starts with identifying

the things in our lives that can cause cancer so we can avoid them.

Thats why its disheartening to see companies and even lawmakers going out of their way

to discredit the good work of respected scientists who are trying to help stem this deadly problem

simply because their findings could hurt their bottom line.

GTA VC - Contenido Japonés Exclusivo [Comparación] - Duration: 16:40.

Hey there again everyone, SpooferJahk here again with another video for good ol' Vadim!

Today we are going to talk about the exclusive content available in the Japanese version of Vice City.

In addition to that, we will be examining some of the odd censorship that Rockstar had to do to Vice City to satisfy Japan's CERO rating system as well.

With no delays, let's get on to the rest of the video.

To start this video, I want to highlight one interesting thing.

Japanese versions of the GTA series always released in this region with a slight delay.

For instance, Japanese PS2 versions were released one and a half years

after the worlwide release

while the PC and Xbox versions was delayed by only five months.

You heard that right,

this is the only region where the region received the PC version first with the PS2 version following.

Due to these delays,

the Japanese release of Vice City appears to have some exclusive content and even some improvements.

For instance,

while developing the PC version, Rockstar decided to add two completely new Tommy skins to use;

Tache and Wild.

By applying the, "Tache" skin, Tommy will have a mustache, whiskers and slightly different eyebrows.

His clothes are completely black and overall looks kinda impressive.

If you always wanted to play as a fantastical mustachioed thug, he is a great choice to consider.

The second skin "Wild" seems to be a reskin of his default clothes, but with a few differences.

Tommy seems to have blonde hair and stubble. He wears a red shirt and light blue jeans.

If you don't like his default clothes, it can be an interesting skin to use.

Both of these exclusive Japanese skins were later released as a part of the Mac OS port of the game

and later appeared in the Android version files.

The problem is, the Android version doesn't even support the dang skin system.

And yeah, if you want to mess around with them the link can be found in the description below.

The next interesting thing R* did to the Japanese release is that they changed this wheel texture.

For some reason, they decided to avoid any similarities with "Fiat Punto's" hubcaps,

therefore making the new texture less similar to them.

Fun fact is, this change appears only on the PS2 version of the game,

because R* simply broke this feature on PC.

The thing is, they changed this texture in a wrong texture container,

which the PC version doesn't even use.

Thankfully, this bug doesn't appear in PS2 version of the game,

because the game has only one texture container with the right texture.

If you are wondering, this change doesn't apply to the Xbox version,

because this version always had different wheels and textures.

The next thing people received in this region are these two exclusive Japanese skins for the Vercetti Gang.

They are still "Marios" saying the same garbage over and over again,

but look like Yakuza members,

which is a bit strange for the Miami locale for the game.

Yet again this change only appears on PS2.

My guess is, they screwed with PC version once again

and if you want to read my thoughts, you can pause the video now.

And no I don't think that these are beta models.

As I said before, the JP release received some extra content in the form of bugfixes.

These bugfixes are not so crucial and don't change the gameplay at all, but they are still worth a mention.

Remember the unique golden Stretch in the "Martha's Mug Shot" mission? Did you want to get one in your hands?

Well, a long time ago, several players found an interesting trick to steal it

by simply killing a chauffeur with a headshot and his dead body opens a door for us.

Unfortunately, the mission would fail if you did this.

Interestingly enough, this trick was fully fixed in the Japanese release,

because you can't kill him any more.

But yeah, there is yet another trick to steal this golden limo.

Just run towards the vehicle and set it on fire by using a flamethrower.

The driver will run away leaving the door open.

People enjoy this trick more,

since it does not lead to mission failure and of course we all have inner arson tendencies.

Unfortunately, you can't do this anymore in the Japanese release,

because the limo now has "fireproof" protection.

Moreover, there are new flags in the code

which forbids the driver to abandon his car in any way and respond to threats.

It means, Japanese players can't trigger another amusing glitch

where Tommy could replace Candy's chauffeur and drive it to the checkpoint.

Did you know that the limo drives without you pressing the keys?

You should try it!

Some of these fixes were also reused for the Cuban Voodoos in the "Trojan Voodoo" mission, where they received fireproofing as well.

This time you CAN actually kill drivers though.

They must have forgotten to make them immortal for this mission.

In the worldwide release, you can ignite their cars and they will abandon their cars just like the limo driver.

However, during the mission Tommy will talk with these ghosts

as well as we will see these cars driving without the Cubans.

Didn't you hate this pesky bug with the stuck "Top Fun" van

after completing the "Bombs Away!" mission?

It feels like the van is frozen to the ground and you can't do anything about that.

Even a tank can't move this bucket of nuts.

In the Japanese release the developers added a special flag in the code to let this van unfreeze after completing the mission.

That's right, Japanese players didn't have the fun times messing around with the stuck "Topfan" van as we all had.

What I actually love about their version is the fact that

they finally fixed a pesky bug involving a one seat vehicle

in the "Love Juice" mission. If you didn't know, by using a one seat vehicle like a "Pizza boy" to pickup Mercedes,

the cutscene will freeze and you don't have any other options other than quit the game.

In the Japanese version, the game tells you to find another vehicle for that.

But anyways, the developers didn't stop with that.

They also decided to add some more minor improvements.

For instance, during the "Cannon Fodder" mission,

the player leaves the car slightly before the Cubans,

instead of right after as in the international release.

And if you noticed, they also moved the mission marker.

When you waste at least $300 greens in your newly acquired "Pole Position" club,

the mission complete cutscene now lasts a little bit longer.

The message "Come back when you have finished the Biker gang missions" is now shown for 4 seconds instead of 1. I always had problems with that.

During the "All Hands On Deck!" mission,

the spawn point inside the mall for the "Infernus" is now disabled.

Why? That's because if you managed to get inside the mall during this mission and enter the car,

the mission would fail and you will stuck in the ghost world.

I have to wonder, who messed around enough to discovered this bug and how they achieved it.

Actually, there are more bug fixes and improvements made for this region's release, but if you want to known more about them,

pause the video and check out the full list from "Space Einstein" and "Saven Play ftw" on the GTA forums.

I actually used their posts to prepare this topic and I want to give a huge thanks to them.

On the other hand, the Japanese release isn't as polished and great as you are lead to believe.

Unfortunately, it was a victim of censorship, and let's briefly talk about it.

First of all, since violence and gore is too risque for the Japanese market,

thanks CERO,

some gore aspects of the game were slightly nerfed.

For instance, blowing off the heads of pedestrians has been completely removed and blood was nerfed.

Here is a slow-motion comparison.

Speaking of blood,

you won't see any blood droplets on your screen by using a chainsaw. This feature was omitted from the Japanese version of the game.

Finally, if the player uses deadly explosives, you won't see blood splats anymore.

Here is a slow-motion comparison.

Other stuff like running with a katana was untouched.

Don't ask me why, these are strange attempts at censorship.

Speaking of mysteries, I have no idea why,

but the developers decided to make a fire sprite much bigger,

ut only for the PC version.

Looks if someone really wanted to see the Vice city world burnt to a crisp.

Secondly, they also decided to remove all the scenes with Ken Rosenberg taking his special miracle wonder sugar.

The first mission is "No Escape?", which originally starts like this.

To solve this problem,

this mission in the Japanese version starts right after the controversial scene.

The same thing happened with "The Shootist" mission, which had this scene.

And now it start like this.

The next thing they had to do was to censor the love scenes during two missions for the "Film Studio".

In "Martha's Mug Shot" Japanese players will not hear any of Candy's moans,

because they were simply cut out making the scene silent for the most part.

Here is the international version.

Moreover, they changed the camera angle to hide some of the special fun from the scene and here is a quick comparison.

The second mission is the "G-Spotlight" cutscene,

which was short cut as well.

The developers simply cut the scene with Steve insisting Candy to do some creative swallowing.

And now it start like this.

And yet again, they also hid the love scene from the player and removed all the moans.

Speaking of this mission, remember the spotlight we used to promote an adult film?

This "smiley face" was replaced with simple text in the Japanese version,

but for some reason not on PC JP release.

Looks like the later Japanese versions are more polished than the PC release for this region. What the heck.

And now be prepared for the worst cut ever!

Ready?

Well, they replaced all "extravagant" photos of Candy Suxxx

in Diaz's mansion with kittens and flowers.

Just think about it,

Diaz - the drug lord of all Vice City,

has rather adorable flower and kitten photos all over the place.

Don't forget about this giant poster with a cool cat on the wall!

With all honesty, this change looks rather weird. Didn't they try to make it less stupid?

Was it a joke from Rockstar?

Would be interesting to get an answer,

because the cat change makes Diaz look even more insane than he should.

Here is a good question for you.

Do you know why almost all recent Vice City speedruns

are played on a Japanese version of the game? That's because this version has one unique bug and thanks to it

the speedrunners can complete the game faster by skipping some chunks of the game.

Here is a brief story.

In order to unlock the third act of the game,

the player must complete seven assets and two of them are "Mansion" and "Print Works". To avoid completing the other five assets,

speedrunners can start the "Hit the courier" mission for Print Works and while on this mission, they also start the "Distribution" mission.

They cancel the "Distribution" mission,

they insta-pass this mission, which gives them a "+1" point to their "asset complete" stat.

But that's not all, they can repeat this glitch again and again.

After the fifth time, they have to complete the "Print Works" mission and that's it,

the third act of the game is unlocked.

If you didn't get it, instead of completing 5 assets,

they replayed the Distribution mission 5 times.

Special thanks for the footage goes to "ANTI",

who to this date has the international record completing the Japanese version of the game.

The information about this bug was provided by "KZ_FREW",

"Mohamad fvc" and Nick007J.

and thanks to Gael for the support.

But anyways, we are not done with the Japanese release yet.

Since it was published and distributed by Capcom there,

the game received two additional intros, one telling you that you must be over 18 years old to play it...

with the second one showing the well known Capcom logo.

Moreover, the discs and the cover have a Capcom logo.

It is rather cool to have the companies responsible for legends

like GTA and Mega Man printed all on one disc.

Oh and here is a minor thing.

They slightly changed the intro screen. They slightly changed the intro screen.

Nothing really interesting about it, but still worth showing.

Futhermore, the Japanese version has only one language available to use, their own.

No English language options to be found here.

The developers simply cut an option to choose a different language in the menu

and removed any other text containers from the game.

They also changed in-game fonts, so if I replace, for instance,

the Japanese text container with the international English one in the PC version,

you will clearly see the difference. It will work but with glitches though.

The interesting thing is,

the XBOX version has all language containers,

but the game doesn't use them even by changing the dashboard language.

Moreover, both PC and Xbox versions received a minor improvement. Instead of saying what button you need to press,

the tips will show you an image of the button instead.

If you are wondering, previously this features was available only on PS2...

and hey, if we were to compare these versions,

then we could clearly see that the dualshock icons are different.

Despite the fact that their release has only one language,

a lot of English strings in the Japanese text container were not translated.

For instance, the mission names and the car names are untouched.

What is more interesting is the fact, that some of the English strings are different.

For example, "Mission Passed" string is now "Mission Completed".

The "Distribution" mission for the Cherry Popper assset is now called "Ice Cream Mission".

It was probably done to hide the fact that you are selling drugs in this mission, but that's just my theory.

Instead of "Good Citizen Bonus!", Japanese player sees "Nice Guy Bonus!"

Quite a fun little change.

Some of the assets names in the stats received proper names.

For instace, instead of Taxi company,

the stat says Kaufman Cabs and so on.

Moreover they changed "ASSET COMPLETED" to "MISSION COMPLETED".

I guess, to avoid any difficulties to undestand what it means due to the translation.

And speaking of assets, they decided to change "PROTECTION RING" to "VERCETTI ESTATE".

Have you ever wondered why the Vercetti Estate is called "PROTECTION RING"?

Unfortunately, the Japanese release appears to be a "Haitian-friendly" version,

where you won't hear or see any words like: "Haitian", "Cuban"

and even all expressions insulting various groups of people.

They were simply omitted from the game after Haitian-American community protests.

I assume, you already know about these in-game differences,

therefore we will skip this part.

If you don't, YouTube is your friend for learning this information.

By the way, the Japanese region has a different control scheme.

Instead of a "Cross" for "yes" and a "Triangle" for "No", the Japanese PS2 version uses the "Cross" for "No" and the "Circle" for "Yes".

If you are wondering, this is a common thing for Japanese Playstation games in general

which I think, Rockstar Games decided to implement for this version. These changes are present in the game menu,

mmu-nation and hardware stores, and potentially for other places as well.

As you can guess, these controls are kinda inconvenient for us to use, because it swaps "Yes" with "No" and adds completely different keys for another action.

But the PC version is a different story.

Instead of "Sprint" for "No" and "Fire button" for "Yes",

the international release uses "Sprint" for "yes" and "enter the car" for "No".

I need to press the left mouse button to buy things now...

okay I guess?

This fact made me think that both PC and PS2 versions were in the development around the same time,

because this is a change in the game engine.

How Machines the Size of Molecules Could Change the World - Duration: 10:40.

[♪INTRO]

It's tricky to go more than a few minutes without running into a machine of some sort.

Whether it was the toaster you made breakfast with, the train you took into town, or the

machine you're staring at right now to watch this video.

The idea of machines taking over the world isn't post-apocalyptic fiction… it's

already happened.

They've transformed society and improved our quality of life.

So if advances in engineering have gotten us this far, from mass producing refrigerators

to traveling to the moon, what's next?

Many chemists are actually thinking a lot smaller: making machines out of molecules.

It takes some chemical know-how to control motion on a microscopic scale.

But tiny machines could revolutionize everything from medicine to materials science, where

molecular processes play a big role.

A machine is basically any device that takes some energy input into at least one moving

part, each with a distinct function.

And these parts come together to produce a useful motion as an output, called work.

Think of an old watch.

All those interconnecting cogs are arranged to make the hands on its face rotate just

the right amount to keep time.

Now, there are some obvious advantages to making machines smaller, like being able to

transport them more easily and make them move more precisely.

In 1959, the Bongo-playing, safe-cracking, Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman

talked about "the problem of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale."

And by small, we're talking a few millionths of a millimeter small — machines made up

of one or a few molecules.

Twenty years later, nanotechnology pioneer Eric Drexler came across a transcript of Feynman's

lecture on machines.

He developed some of the ideas further, and in 1981, he published a paper called "Molecular

Engineering."

Drexler imagined molecule-sized machines that could manipulate the reactants of chemical

processes on an atomic scale, and even build new materials from the molecules up.

Which would be huge!

Just think about how engineers have managed to shrink electrical components over the last

few decades, turning computers the size of buildings into cell phones.

And shrinking mechanical components could unlock a similar kind of revolution.

But building nanoscale machines comes with totally different challenges than the ones

that many engineers deal with.

For starters, when you get down to the size of molecules, objects don't act the way

we're used to on everyday scales.

Like, without careful design, a molecular nut and bolt couldn't be twisted apart easily.

The electrostatic forces between the molecules, called Van Der Waals forces, would attract

them together a lot more than friction affects ordinary nuts and bolts.

I mean, these are the forces that help gecko feet stick to ceilings and stuff.

Another problem is that it's trickier to get the components of a molecular machine

to move the way you want.

A tiny molecule of air bumping into a piston in your car engine doesn't really change

the way it moves.

But that same air molecule might send a molecular machine flying or even destroy it.

Even if the damage isn't that extreme, the constant bombardment from nearby molecules

— called thermal noise — could make the components move around randomly.

And that could make controlling their motions pretty difficult… even though that's what

we need to do for molecular machines to be useful.

And finally, most molecules are linked together with chemical bonds, which form because of

electrical attraction between molecules.

There are different kinds of chemical bonds, but they tend to be fairly rigid and don't

allow for free movement between the two parts — the kind of movement that pretty much

all machines rely on!

For example, imagine a bunch of water molecules locked into the crystal structure of an ice

cube, or even clumped together in liquid water.

Each negatively charged oxygen atom is attracted to the positively charged hydrogen atoms of

nearby water molecules — forming hydrogen bonds between them.

So to build molecular machines, engineers have to figure out how to utilize what's

called a mechanical bond, which your basic chemistry textbook maybe didn't mention.

And in a mechanical bond, the shape of the molecules links them.

The individual parts of each molecule aren't strongly attracted to one another, but they

can't separate entirely without breaking the chemical bonds between the atoms within

one of the molecules.

Kind of like how your key can't accidentally come off your keyring even though they aren't

physically connected.

And scientists had created linked molecules like this as early as the 1960s.

They were called catenanes — chains of two or more connected rings of atoms.

So researchers knew that catenanes existed, but they were rare and really difficult to

produce for scientific studies, let alone anything practical.

At least until 1983, when French chemist Jean-Pierre Sauvage made an unexpected discovery.

Sauvage was originally studying chemical reactions that were driven by ultraviolet light.

And one of those processes involved C-shaped molecules that attached themselves to copper ions

While modeling the reaction, he realized that by tweaking the method, he could produce catenanes

from those molecules in much larger numbers than ever before.

The trick started with getting a copper ion to bond to the inside of a ring-shaped molecule.

Then, a C-shaped molecule can thread through the ring and attach to the same copper ion.

In the right kind of environment, another C-shaped molecule can chemically bond to the

first one, creating a second interlocking ring!

The final part of Sauvage's chemical process was to pop that copper ion out.

And voila: two molecular rings in one mechanically bound structure.

Those rings can freely rotate relative to one another, just like you'd want in a machine.

Sauvage even extended the process to make knotted chemicals and more complicated chains.

To set things in motion, in 1994 Sauvage's team found a way to use that catenane with

a sandwiched copper ion to rotate one of the rings around the other.

Because the rings aren't uniform, they'll adjust to more electrically stable positions

if the charge of that ion changes.

So when that copper ion gets an electron ripped off in a chemical reaction, one of the rings

will rotate 180 degrees.

And it'll twist back if the copper ion recaptures an electron.

This motion is really important to master if we want to build molecular machines with

rotating parts — for instance, something with a molecular propeller that can swim through

liquids.

Around the same time, across the English channel, chemist James Fraser Stoddart was making progress

with a different chemical mechanism.

Stoddart was well acquainted with the laws of attraction.

You're probably familiar with the basics, too: positively charged chemical structures

are attracted to negatively charged ones.

And that's how his team created a molecular machine called a rotaxane, a ring linked onto

a thread.

Back in 1991, Stoddart's group made a nearly closed ring of atoms with a lack of electrons.

They also made a rod shaped molecule with two electron-rich sites and bulky silicon-based

endcaps.

When put together, electrostatic attraction made the ring thread onto the axle, where

it could be closed off to form a complete ring with a chemical reaction.

And although the positively charged ring was attracted to the negatively charged sites

on the axle, it wasn't locked in place too tightly with chemical bonds.

Because we're talking about molecules here, when the ring had a certain amount of heat

energy, it had energy to move around.

So the researchers could make the ring hop between the two negatively charged spots on

the axle, while those bulky groups kept it from sliding off.

In 1994, Stoddart got even more precise and created two chemically different sites on

the axle structure based on molecules called benzidine and biphenol groups.

Those groups have different electric and chemical properties depending on the acidity — or

pH — of the surrounding environment.

In an acidic environment, the benzidine group becomes positively charged, repelling a ring

so it sits on the biphenol group.

So basically, these researchers figured out how to control a ring's movement on an axle

in multiple ways!

His group also used the principles behind these axles to make a molecular elevator that

can raise itself a few nanometers, and even a molecular muscle that can stretch and contract

kind of like our own muscle cells.

Now, lots of components in normal machines, like the cogs in a watch or wheels on a car,

rely on continuously rotating elements.

Sauvage's ring could rotate in response to an input, but couldn't provide a continuous,

controlled output like a motor.

In 1999, though, the organic chemist Ben Feringa and his group in the Netherlands achieved

just that.

They developed a double-sided molecule that acted a bit like motor blades.

As we've mentioned, thermal noise makes it tricky to control how a molecular component

moves.

But Feringa's molecule was based on two methyl groups that were designed to only rotate

one way around.

Every time a pulse of UV light hits one of the methyl groups, it absorbs the light and

converts it into kinetic energy.

The hit methyl group then rotates around an axis and bends over the other methyl group

until it snaps past — so it's blocked from spinning backwards.

And presto, you've got the world's first molecular motor.

As if that wasn't cool enough, in 2011 Feringa and his group even took it even further and

used this technique to build a nano-car with four rotating wheels.

Between them, Sauvage, Stoddart, and Feringa used clever designs and special environments

to solve some of the problems we were having with very basic molecular machines.

And in 2016, they were collectively awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work.

We've only just begun exploring other machines we might be able to make on the nanoscale.

And we know there are plenty of options, because nature has been building them for billions

of years.

Like, right now in your body, super complex molecular machines made of proteins are doing

all kinds of things to keep you going.

Like, your myosins walk along tracks of muscle fiber, pulling them to help you contract your

muscles.

And other cells, like sperm or certain bacteria, have built-in molecular motors to make their

flagella spin around, so they can move through fluids.

And those are just two of many examples, so scientists have plenty of inspiration for

future inventions.

And some researchers have proposed that molecular machines could be used to deliver drugs in

the body.

For example, mesoporous particles have lots of little holes that release their contents

in response to ultrasound waves — kind of like little salt shakers.

Filled with the right drugs, we could load these particles onto a molecular transport

machine to, like, dose tumors with cancer-fighting molecules.

Other researchers have developed a gel with those molecular motors we mentioned, by attaching

them to a tangle of long chains of molecules called polymers.

When you shine a light on the material or heat it up, the motors reel in the fibers

like fishing line, which shrinks the volume of the gel.

Because those motors are storing energy in the form of those bundled up molecules, if

we could find a way to extract the energy back out, this could be a step towards a new

kind of solar battery!

All that said, we have a long way to go before we're building molecular machine factories,

or anything beyond these basic experiments.

It's still tricky to make these tiny machines in large quantities.

And there may be other problems with making a bunch of individually developed components

work together.

But after more research, we might have molecular mechanisms in our scientific toolkits — and

machines to help us at every scale of life.

Oh f&$%...
