Youtube daily report May 15 2018

I honestly thought I would never be able to do this again. I'd made my peace with

it, I'd chosen to focus on other passions of mine and I was totally okay

with that. But the minute that I got the text message that flipped my mood and

honestly my whole outlook on life right now, in seconds flat. I put down

everything I was doing, I pulled some strings, I reminded myself to breathe,

until I realized it was possible and even better, that it was actually going

to happen! ...I'm going on tour! Yay! I'm so glad I finally get to tell you! I can't wait! I'm

so excited! This means a whole lot to me. I I don't

even know. Yeah, so that's happening. Steph from the wizard rock band Tonks

and the Aurors does this tour called Yes All Witches featuring a bunch of amazing

women who create music and other things within the Harry Potter fandom, and for

the first time, I'm going to be a part of it! In addition to me, Lauren Fairweather,

and Tonks in the Aurors, the tour will be featuring Olivia Dolphin, founder of

Wizards in Space, which is a brilliant writing community that produces lit mags,

hosts open mics, and carves out a diverse and inclusive space for writers

and artists to share their work. The last time I toured for longer than a weekend

was in 2012 and my life was very different back then. I've moved towards a

different model of performing shows where I basically just travel to one

show at a time if the person planning the event invites me, and then go back

home when it's done. I've really needed something like this for a while now. It

means a lot to me. And I'm just so happy that a bunch of people in my life came

together to make it possible for me to go!

The Yes All Witches 2018 tour will be taking place in August in the lead-up to

LeakyCon in Dallas. I'll post preliminary details for the tour and the shows we'll

be playing in the video description below. you can also go to

laurenfairweather.com/shows at any time to see the updated list of places where

I'll be performing. I'm already working on a bunch of exciting surprises for

this tour and I'm sure I'll be able to share more of them with you in the

coming months. I'm working on making new merchandise and I'm even writing new

music! I'm so excited. I hope that you'll be able to come and see

one of our shows! The tour is only a week long so I'm sorry if

there isn't anything near you but like I said, I wasn't expecting to be able to do

this again, so I'm gonna be putting everything I can into making this tour

as great as I can. Especially since I don't know if I'll get another

opportunity to tour in a way that works with my life the way it is now. My heart

is pounding, I've seriously had butterflies for weeks just thinking

about this and not being able to tell any of you and I'm so glad to finally be

able to share this news! Thank you for everything and I'll see you soon!

Future Literacies: Crash Course Media Literacy #12 - Duration: 7:38.

Facebook first launched in 2004.

YouTube came out in 2005.

Twitter and Spotify: 2006.

The first iPhone was released in 2007.

Snapchat launched in 2011 and so did Siri.

Tinder was founded in 2012.

Google Glass was first released in 2013.

Amazon's Echo smart speaker came out in 2015.

From social media to smartphones to augmented reality devices to smart speakers.

All of these inventions have changed how we interact with each other, and especially with media.

And yet, they're all just getting started – Well, maybe not Google Glass.

It just wasn't your time, man.

Virtual reality and artificial intelligence are already starting to work their way into our media diets little by little.

You thought internet ads were annoying?

Wait until they can follow you around from billboard to billboard thanks to facial recognition.

You thought it was hard to decipher fabricated news from truth?

Wait until even videos can be Photoshopped. Er...Videoshopped?

Media literacy doesn't just mean learning how to navigate today's media landscape.

It means preparing yourself for tomorrow's, too.

Today we're talking all about literacies of the future.

[Theme Music]

This is our last episode of Crash Course Media Literacy, and I want to thank you all for joining us this far.

During this series we've made a lot of references to new media – computers, the internet, social media –

and how they change or challenge our traditional relationships to media and media literacy.

Today we're going to really dig into that, and talk about two new forms of literacy that promise to shape the future: Data Literacy and Algorithmic Literacy.

OK. First: Data literacy, as you might have guessed from the name, deals with understanding and analyzing data.

And there's a lot of data out there.

You may have heard of "raw data" or "big data" or, if you have a fitbit, "personal fitness tracking data."

So what is data?

For our purposes, data is: information about the world that is stored in a specific format.

And this is a pretty broad definition.

With every passing year, online companies think up more and more ways to track us.

Links, cookies, IP addresses.

Quite simply, every time you "step out" onto the web, you leave a huge path of data behind you.

If you go back and look at the coverage of the 2016 U.S. election you'll find countless articles about data collected from people:

their preferences, their values, their political party.

When data gets used this way, it's often to give an argument of sense of being scientific.

But just because data exist, doesn't mean it's accurate, or helpful.

Humans are flawed. We have biases. We have agendas.

And humans make the data.

It is not neutral, because we are not neutral.

Say you see in a magazine that 30% of Americans love chocolate ice cream the most.

Ok, well what did everyone else like the most?

Were they undecided?

Did they prefer vanilla or chunky monkey or cotton candy?

Maybe 30% isn't even the majority, and 65% of people like peanut butter ice cream the best.

Data only matters in context.

And it can be helpful in many ways.

It helps us track everything from personal fitness goals to citywide poverty levels.

It's just very easy to misconstrue, because humans are susceptible to nice, wholesome, easy to believe numbers.

I said we'd come back to how your personal data can be used, and that brings us to: Algorithmic Literacy.

Algorithms are basically sets of instructions or calculations for a computer to run.

Websites and apps take the data they collect about us and send it through an algorithm, and out pops some result.

Like Facebook. It takes all your personal data and what you've liked and shared and – serves you ads, yes.

But it also sticks info into an algorithm to decide what appears in your news feed.

Its goal is to keep you on Facebook, so it shows you things it thinks you will really like.

That's why there's no "dislike" button.

The way algorithms personalize stuff for us can be fun and useful.

Plus it makes us feel a little special, like those Christmas ornaments in the store that have your name on them.

It also makes us feel comfortable, like we're in our own little world of happy things.

That's because often, we are.

Eli Pariser calls this the filter bubble, the media world we create where we only see and interact with things and people we already like.

Sometimes we do this to ourselves by curating feeds with our own interests in mind.

But this also happens behind the scenes, algorithmically, without our knowledge.

Facebook might serve up posts from the half of your friends that like the same things you do.

Or Google news might show you a mix or articles they know you're likely to click on.

This might be convenient, sure, but it can also mean seeing a very different version of the world than the people around you.

Algorithmic literacy is knowing that any information you see online is only one slice of the pie, and one that's been cut specifically for you.

One of the most important things about Data and Algorithmic literacy is that they always go hand in hand.

And when you know about them, you can start to ask classical media literacy questions, even of the newest of media.

It's impossible to know what new media technology we're going to be dealing with next year, or next decade, or next century.

And there will always be new complications to learn about.

But no matter what form of future literacy you develop, it's sure to rest on the same basic principle: Skepticism.

So as we wrap up this series, and leave you staring into the uncertain future, let us leave you with this:

Being skeptical means approaching everything by questioning its truth.

Every ad, every song, every book, every article – everything

Being skeptical doesn't mean taking the fun out of all media;

it just means that instead of blindly accepting whatever's thrown your way, a little voice in your head says, "But what about…"

Our brains love to play little games with the media. They love the familiar.

They love things with easy explanations. They love taking shortcuts.

They even love believing things we've heard already, even if they're not true.

Skepticism, adding in a dash of logic and context to our media interactions, helps fight our brains' annoying habits.

You know that saying, "follow your gut?"

That is the opposite of what you should do with media.

"Follow your perception of bias and textual analysis skills" should be the saying; it's just not as catchy.

Media consumers fall into traps all the time because they like when things are comfortable, certain, and easy.

But the world is not always comfortable.

Nothing is certain but the fact that Prince is greatest musician of all time, and that life is rarely easy.

Once you come to terms with the fact that every bit of media isn't as simple as it looks, you're that much closer to understanding it.

Over the past dozen lessons, we've learned the history of media literacy, how to read advertisements and their darker cousin, propaganda.

We have looked at our minds on media and our media on money.

We've explored media law and how to break it, and even looked into the future of literacy.

We shape the media as much as it shapes us.

Our reactions to media are just as important as what's thrown our way.

We're all media creators now, like it or not, and we're certainly all consumers.

Everyone has a role to play, and a responsibility to share, and we all need to do it together.

I'm glad you've joined us on this journey.

Until next time, I'm Jay Smooth and this has been Crash Course: Media Literacy.

LEGO Ghostbusters BrickHeadz and What I'd Rather Have... - Duration: 1:18.

LEGO revealed the Ghostbuster Brick Headz

two pack today on Twitter...

and my gosh, so many LEGO news videos today!

Heck, there might even be a fourth one,

so stay tuned.

But anyways, another Brick Headz set.

Yeah, we just had three sets for the theme revealed today...

they're really pushing Brick Headz this year.

I mean, we got Back to the Future ones earlier this year,

so Ghostbusters makes sense -

another beloved 80s property.

But gosh, there's a little problem

these one-off Brick Headz present.

It makes me wish they made...

random non-Brick Headz sets for these properties.

I mean, I get that these are trying to capture

that Funko Pop crowd,

but I feel minifigure-centric little wide-release sets

of these properties,

or even retail exclusives would sell better.

I dunno.

This was the same feeling

a lot of us had with the Dimensions line.

We do get the taste with LEGO Ideas stuff,

but a lot of those are discontinued.

But for what I think of these Brick Headz -

Venkman is great, I think Slimer...

is a bit off.

Would've worked better with translucent pieces,

and it's weird seeing teeth on a Brick Head.

I dunno.

Not really a fan of his Brick Headz figure.

Either way, what do you guys think?

Are too many Brick Headz?

Would you rather see more non-Brick Headz sets

of 80s properties?

Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

I'll see you guys later,

peace out, bye.

3 Things We Still Don't Understand About the Milky Way - Duration: 5:42.

Thanks to Brilliant.org for supporting SciShow Space.

[ ♪ Intro ]

The Milky Way is our home, so you'd think we'd know a lot about it.

And we do.

But a whole galaxy is a pretty big place, so there's still plenty of weird stuff that

we're trying to figure out.

And that's the cool stuff!

So, here are three questions scientists are still trying to puzzel out.

One is our galaxy's shape.

We know that we live in a spiral galaxy, with long, sweeping arms packed with stars.

But why's it like that?

After all, stars form from a fog of gas and dust called the interstellar medium, or ISM.

And the ISM is everywhere within the galaxy, so why do stars congregate in the arms?

Well, we don't totally know -- but we're making progress.

One clue comes from structures called filaments that astronomers in the 1980s started to find

at the cores of some galactic arms.

Filaments are dense regions of the ISM that are incredibly thin, up to a hundred times

longer than they are wide.

They can stretch for hundreds of light-years but, weirdly, seem to exist on all size scales,

kind of like a fractal.

Together, they form a sort of galactic skeleton for the Milky Way, providing ingredient-rich

places for new stars to form.

The European Space Agency's Herschel Space Observatory has even found filaments connecting

all the closest star forming regions!

But exactly how many of these structures there are and how they play a role around here is

still up for debate.

That's not the only mystery our galaxy's stars present.

As astronomers have mapped out the positions and speeds of nearby stars more accurately,

they've found they're less predictable than expected.

Instead of mostly circling in a flat plane, a research group discovered in 2012 that many

stars seem to be moving up or down about 10% as fast as they're circling the galactic center.

When mapped out at large scale, the Milky Way's stars even seem to be rippling with waves.

Studying these waves is called galactoseismology and, like the study of seismic waves here

on Earth, it may reveal clues about unseen events.

The waves are probably the result of a big collision with the Milky Way... but where's the collider?

Researchers aren't sure, but they think there are two likely possibilities, both of

which would've happened about 100 million years ago.

One's kind of standard: an interaction between our galaxy and one of its many satellite galaxies.

The other, though, is really cool: It's possible that the Milky Way collided with

a massive dark matter structure, and its gravity stirred up all those stars.

Although we can't see dark matter, we know it's all around us, especially near our

galaxy's outer edges.

But just because we can't find the culprit, doesn't mean it's gotta be dark matter.

Whatever the collision was, its trajectory probably carried the other object to a place

beyond the galactic core and basically out of sight from Earth.

There's also at least one piece of evidence suggesting a dwarf galaxy might've been

the culprit instead.

Astronomers have found a few stars traveling so fast that they couldn't have come from

our galaxy, so they might have been knocked loose during that big collision.

Either way, we'll have to work fast to figure this out because those waves of stars will

probably disappear in another hundred million years.

Then again, maybe we won't have to work that fast after all.

Finally, stars aren't the only thing traveling weirdly fast around here.

For decades, astronomers have observed a few clouds of gas moving at strangely high velocities

-- up to 90 kilometers per second faster than the stuff around them.

At that speed, it would take only a year and a half to travel from the Sun out to Neptune!

Always on the lookout for a clever name, researchers call them high-velocity clouds.

These clouds are mostly found in the outer, halo region of the Milky Way, and they're

often observed to have a low metallicity, or abundance of heavier elements.

And they're not small, either: They can contain millions of times more material than

the Sun and span tens of thousands of light-years.

Scientists have four main ideas about where they might have come from:

[yawn ort] The oldest hypothesis, proposed by famous

astronomer Jan Oort, suggests that the clouds might be the far-flung leftovers of the process

that formed the Milky Way.

With only the weakest gravitational pull affecting them, that far-off material would've taken

billions of years to get here, speeding up along the way.

Another idea is that -- because they do have such low metallicity -- high velocity clouds

are the remnants of an ancient collision between the Milky Way and another galaxy.

Hey, where have we heard that before?

A related hypothesis is that the material is made up of gas stolen gravitationally from

a satellite galaxy.

That seems especially likely for the clouds found in the southern hemisphere, which is

in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds, our closest galactic neighbors.

One last idea is that these clouds actually came from the Milky Way all along.

Perhaps a powerful supernova explosion hurled them away from the galaxy's disk, only for

gravity to claw them back before they could fully escape.

There's even a chance different clouds could have different origin stories.

To figure that out, astronomers are studying the composition of each cloud in detail.

If they were created in different ways, there might be a signature of their home still waiting

to be detected.

We'll just have to wait for the results.

We don't yet know the answers to any of these Milky Way mysteries or many others out there.

But put them all together and our galaxy suddenly seems a lot less isolated and our cosmic neighborhood

a lot busier.

Just watch out for any flying galaxies.

One place within the milky way where we can figure out the answers to big questions relatively

quickly is Brilliant.org.

Inspired by these existing questions about the milky way, I'm working on the Dark Matter quiz.

Leading up to it was a lesson and quiz on the fate of the universe that I looked through

to prep, but this starts off pretty easy.

So this question wants to know what is the dominant source of mass in our solar system.

So the Sun!

So I got it right and so did 72% of the other people in the Brilliant community.

Which is a neat thing about Brilliant because you can see how you did but also see how other

people did when they answered the question.

I think what sets Brilliant apart from other education sites is this community aspect.

On Brilliant you can answer questions that other people have submitted or you can even

submit your own questions to be answered.

So check it out for yourself and let us know if you submit a question and I'll try to solve it.

And the first 777 people to use that url to sign up for an annual premium subscription

will get 20% off.

Plus, you'll be helping to support SciShow Space when you do, so thank you!

Detour App | Our Favorite Audio Tour App + Free Tours Until 5/31/2018) - Duration: 5:10.

Hey, it's Ernest from Trip Astute. In this video, I want to review an app called

Detour -- a great way to explore a new city with just your phone or tablet.

(light chiming music)

There's no shortage of apps geared to help travelers. We reviewed a few in the past

like Google Trips, and I'm constantly testing new apps to see if I can

recommend them. Today, I want to share an app that really impressed me.

It's called Detour and it was created by Andrew Mason,

who is the founder of Groupon. The app is available for both iOS and Android, and

claims to have audio tours available in 180 cities. If you're planning a trip, you

might want to check it out and download the different tours. In fact, all of their

audio tours are currently free until the end of May 2018, so take advantage of it.

You might be asking, "what makes this audio tour app different from others?"

It's a good question, so let me go through the list of why I think this app

is so unique. Number 1: Themes. You'll notice right away that most cities have

multiple tours available, sometimes in the same general area. For example, when I

look at the Venice area of Los Angeles, there are actually two tours available

in the app with different themes and focus areas. This makes a lot of sense in

a place like Venice where you have a very strong contrast between the

boardwalk, which is famous for Muscle Beach, professional skaters, and artists,

and the residential areas and community areas which were modeled to look like the

Venice canals in Italy. Most of the tours seems to be focused on giving you a more

local experience rather than just focusing on major landmarks. Number 2:

Unique narrators. The app features some interesting and famous people as their

narrators. For example, when scrolling through some of the notable voices in

the app, I noticed names like Jenny Zigrino and Ken Burns. It's really nice

to not only hear their voices, but also get their unique perspectives during the

tour. Number 3: Previews. You can get a video or audio preview of the tour

before purchasing it. It's really a cool feature that can help when trying

to decide between several different tours in the same area or city. The first

five minutes of a tour is free so you can see if you like it before purchasing,

which is a nice touch. Number 4: Cost-effective. Most tours are

around $5 to $8 and lasts around forty-five minutes. This might

seem like a lot but when you compare it to the cost of using a local tour

operator, it's pretty cheap. Plus all the tours are free until the end of May 2018.

Number 5: Steps and distance tracking. The iOS app allows you to use the

device's motion and fitness tracking, which allows you to track your steps.

It's an additional incentive to do a walking tour especially if you have

fitness goals in mind. Number 6: Navigation. The app provides a

lot of cues on where you need to go. There's an arrow that tells you the

direction you need to be facing and instructions on where to turn. There's

even an augmented reality mode which shows you the direction and target

location within the device's camera view. And finally, number 7: Ability to

share and sync tours with friends. I absolutely love this feature. You can

share and sync the tour with friends using a QR code. The app basically sets up a

Wi-Fi network with your friends and allows you to stream your tour on to

their app and devices. This means that only one person needs to have purchased

a tour. Also, there aren't any restrictions on the amount of people

that can be sharing a tour at a time. And those are my highlights from using the

Detour app. As you can probably tell, I think it's a great app to use when

visiting a city or even when exploring your home city. The app lets you find

places and learn details that are often not on tourist radars or included in

guidebooks. I think this app is especially awesome for those traveling

solo or looking to explore a new place. But the fact that you can share the app

with friends makes it really fun and versatile. One thing to note is that the

app was recently purchased by Bose, which makes really high-end audio equipment,

and it looks like the company is planning to integrate it with their own

app, as well as building in more augmented reality to the experience. I'm

excited to see how this app evolves. It looks

like because of this acquisition, they're really trying to get the buzz out with

these free tour downloads until the end of May. Wait, did I mention that all the

tours are available for free until the end of May 2018? Okay, I'll stop. But

seriously, you should download the tours if you have any upcoming travel plans.
