Youtube daily report May 24 2018

I got a voicemail from him.

And I'm saying to myself, you ever get a voicemail

from your husband or your friend or somebody

but you speak to them so often that you're like, if it

was anything they'd tell you?

So it's like, you'll check it in a few days or whatever.

And--

Aw, man.

And I think I waited--

like, it kept popping back up, the voicemail.

Check your voicemail, check your voicemail.

So I finally was like, fine.

Let me just check it and just delete it.

And then when I heard it, it was a butt dial

and he was like having a conversation.

But in the conversation, the tone

was completely inappropriate.

And it was off because I know his tone.

He only speaks to females one way.

And it was that way.

And I knew what it was right away and I approached him.

I was like, oh my god.

I was like, where were you yesterday?

And what was this? - He was like, where was I?

What do you mean?

I was working and I'm always working.

And I was like, yeah, OK.

But where were you?

And then we had a talk and that was that.

But then he left right away because I think he didn't know

where I was going to go or what I was going to do

or how I was going to react. - I was like, oh my god.

What the hell?

You know, but actually at the time--

I was very calm, though.

What is Scientific Racism? - Duration: 14:31.

Oh yeah, this one is gonna make me popular.

So yeah, there was a time where racism was not only mainstream but scientifically approved.

We had top scientists in their fields writing long diatribes about "race science" all

of which turned out to be… well, racist conjecture.

And while we put it in the realm of goofy Victorian ideas, it still affects today, and

we still have best selling authors spouting the same thoughts.

Not to mention, the facts aside, self-described sceptics and rationals on the internet and

the comments of this video dig up these long-dead ideas.

I've rambled long enough, this is the scientific racism video.

Hi, I'm Tristan Johnson, and this is Step Back History.

Be sure to click the subscribe button as well as the bell notification to never miss a new

Step Back video or live stream.

Scientific racism is pretty much what it says on the tin.

It was and is the use of various forms of pseudoscience to "prove" race is a biological

fact of humanity.

For a long time, scientists made the argument different races were literally different species.

This concept of race was the prevailing scientific consensus for centuries.

It began to decline when conjecture was no longer form of evidence.

By the way, there's going to be a lot of preposterously racist theories described in

this video.

They have zero merits, but they most definitely can be distressing to hear about as these

ideas, while ridiculous and wrong are still popular in some circles.

The origins of scientific racism go all the way back to some classical age thinkers.

In the Greco-Roman tradition, you had Hippocrates writing about dark people being cowards and

light people being courageous fighters.

Roman writers like Posidonius used to refer to "those races nearest to the southern

half of the axis" as not having enough blood, making them have features different from them.

This was pretty much the extent of it before the age of enlightenment.

Remember how you used to like JK Rowling before you found out she has a twitter?

Well, if your JK Rowling is Enlightenment philosophers, you might wanna turn off now.

Voltaire, like THE Voltaire, believed different races developed independently of each other.

Apparently being the enlightenment version of an edgy atheist because this broke with

church doctrine about Adam and Eve and such.

In his book Systema Naturae, Carl Linnaeus, the founder of modern-day taxonomy outlined

five "varieties of humanity" as a sort of sub-species list.

Immanuel Kant waxed lyrical about his ideas about what races were good and bad based on

stereotypes while claiming it to be reasoned philosophy.

And Benjamin Rush, the founding father thought being non-white was a disease.

However, scientific racism hit its zenith in the Victorian era.

Developing scientific theories meshed with presupposed conclusions about race, to result

in some of the weirdest concepts ever called legitimate, accepted scientific fact.

Especially if they could use it to defend slavery or colonisation.

The first big debate in the old-timey race science circles that thankfully doesn't

exist today (until someone links me to someone who really does believe it of course) is whether

or not different races are the same species.

Yes, until recently, some even in the 20th century, people denied all Humans are of the

same lineage.

They called it Polygenism and many enlightenment thinkers debated over this.

It was really just debates using conjecture and assumed stereotypes so you can imagine

how productive it went.

These were debates which came more down to whether not being white was because they were

a different species, or because they had a skin condition where a mole covered their

entire body.

We're working with this kinda stuff.

Another theory had to do with skull shape.

You can find this in various scientific journals of the period.

Long descriptions about how every person's skull from this region has these features

and that features which somehow made them less than white people.

They even used this to try and claim southern European or Irish people were somehow not

white.

This developed into a prominent scientific Victorian science called phrenology which…

Oh… well, then please go on Well, I guess you should click on the thingy

and go see Xander's video all about it then on ARTExplains.

He can have the fun, kooky Victorian science and I can keep covering the grim discussion

of people with horrible worldviews.

The analytics say you folks love that stuff… sigh…

Another prominent word from these long-discredited race scientists and modern day comment sections

is the term degeneracy.

Go look at the comments, I'm sure you'll find it.

A French naturalist named Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and German anatomist Johann

Blumbach showed off their Buffonery with their own racial theories.

They believed humans were of a single stock, which is at least one small relief, but from

the Caucasian Adam and Eve…sigh… they "degenerated" from different environmental

factors such as too much sun or bad food.

They believed if you changed your diet and went to a new climate you could turn back

into a proper white person… this is genuinely distressing stuff to read my dudes.

And now we must get to Darwin.

Charles Darwin was undoubtedly a massive shaker in the field of biology, spearheading the

theory of evolution via natural selection.

He's often quote-mined by creationists because he used the word race and species rather fluidly,

as was a concept at the time.

So he referred to the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life.

He was referencing different types of broccoli, but people either attributed human races to

this, to attack Darwin or promote racist ideas.

In his book The Descent of Man, he does talk about the savage races as being exterminated

by the "civilised ones" but not as an aspirational statement.

It was simply something he was observing as those "civilised" Europeans were brutally

conquering and subjugating people around the world.

Once Darwinism became more of a standard scientific theory they began to claim different races

as more or less evolved from our primate ancestors.

You can probably guess where this is going.

Some doctors like Franz Ignaz Pruner claimed through looking at skulls and thinking about

it, that black people were naturally closer to apes… sigh…

They also used this to make the Irish into a non-white race.

Independent of Darwin, the idea began to pick up of using the concept of the struggle of

life and natural selection to develop it to refer to groups of people.

We call this Social Darwinism, and coupled with the concept of nations, builds an ideology

around different for survival.

You know, the ideology behind the Nazis.

So why was this so prevalent?

If race science and scientific racism had no basis in reality, why was it so popular?

Well, it had to do with the cultures which developed it.

See Europe had been through this centuries-long project of looking at other people's lands,

saying it's their's and either subjugating, enslaving, or eradicating the people who lived

there.

You know, as civilised people do.

Humans don't typically think its ok to do such horrible acts of violence to their fellow

humans, so they constructed elaborate justifications for it.

Early on, it was about civilising them or bringing Christianity, but as it turned more

into straight up murder and conquest, they needed a better justification.

Science was a way to do it.

And do it they did.

Scientific racism justified the genocide of the first nations of the Americas and apartheid

in South Africa.

When they weren't conquering, a lot of Europeans were busy keeping people in slavery based

on racial categories.

If race isn't biological and you believe in equality and liberty, and all those ideals

enlightenment people believed in, you needed a way to justify keeping an entire group of

people in chains.

So, wrapping up a nonsensical science to do so was the easy answer.

Race science became prominent in the United States primarily for justifying why black

people just weren't capable of handling freedom, and their skin colour made them docile

and happy to work as slaves.

One such book in 1851 by Samuel Cartwright was called "Diseases and Peculiarities of

the Negro race" which was popular among slave owners.

It argued black people were mentally unfit for self-determination and the only black

people seeking freedom suffered from a disease he pulled out of his ass called drapetomania.

He believed it was a mental illness that made black people want to escape from slavery.

And this might sound like crazy Victorian stuff, but this is the root why assertiveness

in black people is considered crazy and dangerous, while the same behaviour in white people makes

them commanding and leaders.

He also argued black people don't experience much pain compared to white people, legitimising

their rough treatment.

This still comes to haunt us in how black people experience pain and pain management

in hospitals to this day.

It wasn't until the mid-20th century this race science was formally dismissed on the

world stage, so there was still plenty of more brutality based on pseudoscience to come.

One person you might have heard about is Francis Galton and the concept of eugenics.

He argued we needed to prevent race mixing, and sterilise people undesirable to strengthen

the species.

This is the same Francis Galton who invented regression towards the mean.

Eugenics was another pillar of the Nazi project of extermination, but eugenics societies were

all over the west, and popular.

Doctors sterilised untold amounts of people under the justification of improving the gene

stock.

Sometimes they called this… ugh… racial hygiene.

But this is the subject of a future patreon stretch goal video.

These concepts of race were essential to nationalists, who wanted to make sure anyone different from

them couldn't live close by.

They used eugenics and racial theories to justify shutting down immigration from non-European

countries.

Maybe even calling them shithole countries sometimes.

The decline of this phase of our scientific history was in the wake of the Second World

War.

Seeing the atrocities the Nazis conducted in the name of nationalism, racial hygiene,

and eugenics made everyone do a bit of a double take.

Groups like UNESCO tried to interrogate what the real science was behind race and came

up quite empty.

After the Second World War, scientists became slowly more sceptical of their assumptions.

We tested the human genome and found out a lot about human genetic diversity, or precisely

how it's quite lacking.

Compared to other animals, we are very genetically similar to each other, so much so we theorise

the human race almost went extinct at some point in our distant past.

We only differ by about .3% of our genetic code on average compared to .7% of chimpanzees.

Most of the genetic diversity in humans is between different groups living in Africa.

Judging how long we've lived in Africa, this is not surprising.

So, race is really not much of anything biologically.

It's a few small morphological adaptations based on climate.

That's really it.

Skin pigment is really just a matter of how big a particular type of skin cell is.

But race is real.

It's like the sex and gender thing.

Race is the social categories we have built around these small morphological differences,

and the expectations and performances we make in those categories.

Just like how gender is the set of expectations, and performances we build around our sex.

This is what is meant by social construct by the way.

It doesn't make it fake, it just means it's something we built.

If we created it, then we can change it, or destroy it if we want to and with enough effort.

Race is in many ways the wounds of colonialism our species still bears, and we can work to

mend them.

And scientific racism isn't dead.

Authors like Nathan Wade, Richard Herrnstein, Charles Murray, and Amy Chua still preach

racism using the trappings of scientific language.

They take correlations based on socioeconomic class and go to race as the causation.

It's been disproven time and time and time again, but still, these books come out.

Because it's not about accuracy, it's about a worldview.

It's working backwards from an assumption.

It's trying to justify why different racial groups have things so different from each

other without doing introspection.

This was not a fringe part of science for a long time.

It was mainstream accepted science.

It was not until we interrogated our own assumptions, and examined not only the world, but how we

look at the world, and what blinders we were wearing that we began to fix it.

That interrogation is the crucial driving force behind the postmodernist movement.

Maybe that explains why the founders of postmodernism like Michel Foucault started by trying to

figure out what happened to cause the Nazi regime.

It's why we need to examine our own assumptions every day and listen to people whose experiences

of the same material world are different from ours.

Because we're all wearing blinders, and the only way to make the most accurate model

of how the world works is through something scholar Elsa Barkley Brown called Gumbo Ya-ya,

which is Creole for when many voices are spoken at once.

And in my mind, it's why the humanities aren't just an interesting pastime.

It's crucial to understanding ourselves and others.

Ok, so my plug for this week is about the Step Back subreddit.

I'm trying to find out what to do with it, so if you have a thought about what a good

QUICK LOOK: Earthquake Early Warning Sensor Installation Continues - Duration: 2:17.

Despite a rare May rainstorm, crews from the California Geological Survey were in

the back parking lot at Cal OES headquarters installing the latest tool

in California's robust earthquake early warning system. [OFFICIAL] "Our goal with building

out the California Earthquake Early Warning system network is to build a

network of sensors that total 1,115 sensors." While these seismic stations

vary from location to location they all perform the same primary functions. They

register the movement of the earth 24/7. If and when an earthquake happens, these

stations will be the first to know. [OFFICIAL] "Scientists have come up with an estimate

that we have a 99% chance of having a magnitude 6.7 earthquake somewhere in

the state in the next 30 years." This latest seismic station here at Cal

OES is closest to the Hayward Fault. [OFFICIAL] "I'd say we're about 70 or 80 miles away from

from Oakland, so in this case assuming that the shaking is continuing to head

toward Sacramento we'd feel some level of shaking. You could have up to a minute

The History of Fortnite Battle Royale - Did You Know Gaming? Feat. Remix - Duration: 8:30.

Did you know?

Fortnite's original form was very different to the Battle Royale mode that popularized it.

Fortnite was conceived during an internal game jam at Epic Games, pitched as a mix of

the zombie survival multiplayer of Left4Dead and Minecraft.

Players would spend the day gathering supplies and building a fortress, then spend the night

defending it from zombie hordes.

This version of Fortnite was announced at the Spike Video Game Awards in 2011 with a

pre-rendered trailer, but Epic had only conceived of the idea "three weeks" prior.

Epic used this reveal to gauge interest from publishers, and was open to changing the direction

of the game.

Early into Fortnite's development, the upper management at Epic saw the growing potential

of the "games-as-a-service" model, hoping to emulate the success of Dota 2 and League

of Legends.

It was decided that Fortnite would be built around this idea, and Epic partnered with

Chinese investment firm Tencent, who had experience with the model.

Tencent would later purchase roughly 40% of Epic Games for $330 Million in June of 2012.

Several key developers at Epic, including Lead Designer Cliff Bleszinski, were lukewarm

towards this new business model, and left the company after selling their shares to

Tencent.

A functional prototype for Fortnite wasn't playable until 2014, three years after it

was conceived, and three years before work on a Battle Royale mode began.

The game now included aspects of tower defence games, an RPG-like progression system, and

a Diablo inspired loot mechanic.

It's scope shifted frequently, with this iteration being a Free to Play co-op Player Versus Environment

game, with a Player Versus Player mode tacked on.

Though Fortnite was featured in Game Informer in 2014, the game fell off the public radar

as Epic appeared to shift their focus to their MOBA game Paragon.

In reality, the developer was using Fortnite as a testing ground for the new Unreal Engine

4, which slowed development.

On the long development cycle, Bleszinski indepthly explained, "It took a while to

come out ... because making games is hard".

Fortnite was eventually re-announced with a Summer 2017 release date, but it was only

launched in Early Access around this time as Epic felt the game still wasn't ready

for a full release.

Publishing the game this way was a challenge for Epic's marketing department.

Though the period between an announcement and release of a AAA game is typically 12

to 18 months, Epic released Fortnite just 7 weeks after it was re-announced.

Additionally, Epic decided not to showcase the game at E3, fearing that because Fortnite

had already been announced long before, it might get lost in other news or announcements.

Instead, they sent out a press release, put out several trailers, and partnered with content

creators on YouTube and Twitch to market the game.

In early 2017, Publisher Bluehole launched an early version of their game Playerunknown's

Battlegrounds, nicknamed PUBG.

Several executives at Epic took note, and thought they could make their own version

of a "Battle Royale" game within Fortnite.

The company brought on the team behind the Unreal Tournament series to fulfill their

plans for this PvP mode.

The team would playfully include a few Easter eggs referencing their past work on Unreal

Tournament, such as posters depicting art and locations from the series.

The Battle Royale mode was developed in a short amount of time, and Epic wanted to have

it playable as soon as possible.

To ensure a streamlined production, they went into development with a rule that banned members

of the team from asking, "What if…?".

They knew they'd be able to add other ideas after the skeleton of the game was complete,

and could save their additional ideas for later.

Two weeks before the mode was set to roll out, Epic decided their Battle Royale mode

should standalone and release for free separately from the pay-to-play story campaign.

Epic's marketing team worked 14 days straight to compensate for the sudden decision.

Though the Battle Royale mode was a last minute afterthought, it has ironically become the

most successful part of Fortnite, and has overtaken PUBG in monthly revenue and Twitch

viewership.

The success of Fortnite: Battle Royale has caused Epic to shift more of its resources

to the game, which led to the closure of their MOBA Paragon.

They have since created a second Fortnite development team specifically for Battle Royale.

Fortnite's art direction was quite different to previous Epic Games titles, though this

wasn't always the case.

Early versions of the game featured a more realistic, creepy art style.

However, the team shifted towards a more colorful, cartoonish direction inspired by Pixar, Tim

Burton, and Looney Toons, because they didn't want to create an in-game environment similar

to PUBG's.

They instead wanted players to enjoy the world, spend hours in it, and not feel sad afterwards.

Cliff Blezenski explained the company's reasoning for the new stylized art, and the

game's lack of "dudebros", saying, "everyone got [so] tired of this post-apocalyptic look

that everything rubberbanded back to this bright cartoony look.

[...] you look at the Fortnite trailer and it looks like Anna and Elsa running around

killing the zombies".

Epic enabled cross-platform play between several versions of Fortnite, though play between

the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is not currently possible.

According to Microsoft, this is because of Sony's internal policies.

Interestingly, during September of 2017, cross-platform play between the Xbox One and PS4 was briefly

enabled due to what Epic called a "configuration error".

The crossover was only noticed because of the naming conventions in the online systems

of the two consoles.

The Xbox Live service allows its users to include spaces in their Gamertags, while the

PlayStation Network does not.

The error was only noticed when players on PlayStation saw players with names that had

spaces.

Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, commented on the error on Twitter,

saying that he "would have liked to see [Epic] leave it on."

The popularity of Fortnite has even drawn the attention of the US educational system.

Some schools, like Ohio's Ashland University, offer scholarships for top Fortnite players

through a recently formed eSports program.

Additionally, many students play the mobile version of the game at school, enough that

many institutions have reported problems with their in-school Wi-Fi networks due to the

sheer volume of data used by the game.

High School teacher Priscilla Cullen noted, "[My] school allows phones during the lunch

breaks and instead of socialising all they do is play Fortnite."

Many schools have attempted to ban the game, but others have taken a more indirect approach

to get their students to put down their phones.

One teacher, identified as "Mr. Hillman", wrote a post on the Fortnite subreddit asking

that Epic tell players to pay attention in class.

In response, Epic added the message "Mr. Hillman says stop playing in class," to

it's rotation of loading screens.

Others have used Fortnite as an incentive for their students.

One middle school teacher in Chicago told her students that the class would hold a group

discussion about the game if they could finish their schoolwork without a single interruption.

She later told Vice, "You could hear a pin drop in that room."

Another teacher in Oregon offered to play Fortnite with a student struggling with homelife

problems if they could pass math that semester.

This was mostly successful, and the student's test scores improved noticeably.

Fortnite's popularity has also led to some interesting situations not seen with other

games.

In May of 2018, Epic teamed up with Marvel Studios to include a new mode inspired by

the film Avengers: Infinity War.

The mode allows players to claim the Infinity Gauntlet item and transform into Thanos.

Humorously, Thanos can perform any of the game's emotes, all of which are frame-by-frame

recreations of pop culture references or memes.

Several celebrities openly play Fortnite, including the rapper Drake.

In March of 2018, Drake played the game with livestreamer Ninja and broke Twitch's record

for most-watched stream with over 635,000 viewers.

This was nearly 250,000 more than the previous record holder.

Drake has also offered to include lyrics about the game in an upcoming song if Epic includes

an emote based on the music video for his song "Hotline Bling".

Terrifying IMPEACHMENT Announcement Rocks the Nation - Duration: 11:55.

Terrifying IMPEACHMENT Announcement Rocks the Nation

Democrats have been trying to get President Donald Trump impeached ever since he took

office.

Now, they appear to be closer to accomplishing this goal than ever before.

The Daily Caller reported that Democratic Rep. Al Green spoke out on Tuesday to claim

that a Republican member of the House told him privately that he's considered impeachment

for President Trump.

"I have actually had — and when you say what I'm about to say, people will wonder,

'Well, who was it and when was it said?' — but I've actually had a Republican member

who said, 'You know, I'm strongly considering impeachment now,'" Green said.

"And I can only say to you that my suspicion is that there are a good many others who believe

that we've reached that point in our history, but it's a difficult bridge for some to

cross.

For me, it's really not about the difficulty as much as it is about the necessity to do

something about an unfit president.

This is particularly terrifying coming from Green, as the Texas Democrat has been leading

the Trump impeachment charge from the very beginning.

He has already presented multiple impeachment resolutions to the House since Trump took

office.

When presenting his latest impeachment legislation earlier this year, Green argued that Trump

is "legitimizing bigotry."

"Saying that certain countries of color are s-hole countries … and then saying it

as you're discussing a 'merit-based' immigration policy.

Is it really a merit-based policy, or a race-based policy masquerading as merit-based?"

Green said.

"This bigotry is being evinced in policy."

It's no secret that there are Republicans who have wanted to see Trump go down for quite

some time now.

It's a very bad sign that one of these Republicans may have contacting Green and indicated that

he was ready to consider impeachment officially.

What do you think about this?

Scien & Klor Founders of 123KLAN Speak About Their Brand : Bandit1sm - Duration: 2:33.

We started to work for numerous brands, like Adidas, Nike, Stussy, LGR, Converse and many mores

Because we have that authenticity from the fact that we came and still are from graffiti.

We were able to translate those code.

By either revamping logo's with our own touch.

we gave them attitude

or we took a cool word and made them into a cool logo

And then naturally that's how we started to work for big streetwear and sportswear brand along the way.

It's like that. That we had the idea of launching our own brand.

Up to this day , the ways we release our shirts remain the same.

Because it's mostly textile and the end of the day.

The added value is our design that we print out

Now we use various support

T-shirt,

Hoodies,

Crewneck,

Hats,

Beanies,

Pins, and on top of that also

poster

The 1 S M at the end

Because we didn't write it * banditisme * like the proper way with a I but we choose the 1

represents the 123 of 123KLAN

it's really codify following the graffiti way

Meaning: The 1 is clear that it represents the 1.

The S in form of $ mean the 2

Ad the M if you turn it sideways make a 3

so we got the brand of 123KLAN

We are not back up by millionnaire or big corporation

so we started out by simply print out 1 runs of tees

In 2007 when we arrive in Montreal.

In One Phone Call Robert Mueller Revealed His Secret Plans For The President - Duration: 12:37.

In One Phone Call Robert Mueller Revealed His Secret Plans For The President

Robert Mueller is beginning to show his cards.

The special counsel is dangling an offer in front of the President's lawyers.

And Mueller just revealed his secret plans for Trump.

Mueller and his team are trying to negotiate terms for an interview with the President.

Trump supporters believe the President should stay far away from Mueller and his band of

Democrat pit bull prosecutors because the only purpose of an interview is to trap the

President in a misstatement.

But Mueller is using the interview as the carrot to entice Trump to accept his offer.

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani told the New York Times that the Mueller team said the

obstruction probe could be wrapped up by September 1—if Trump agrees to a midsummer interview.

The New York Times reports:

"The special counsel hopes to finish by Sept. 1 the investigation into whether President

Trump obstructed the Russia inquiry, according to the president's lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani,

who said on Sunday that waiting any longer would risk improperly influencing voters in

November's midterm elections.

Mr. Giuliani said that the office of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, shared its

timeline about two weeks ago amid negotiations over whether Mr. Trump will be questioned

by investigators, adding that Mr. Mueller's office said that the date was contingent on

Mr. Trump's sitting for an interview.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.

Wrapping up the obstruction case would not signal the end of Mr. Mueller's work.

That is one piece of his broader inquiry, a counterintelligence investigation into Russia's

campaign to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump associates coordinated

with it.

Counterintelligence investigations are used to gather information quietly about the activities

of foreign powers and their agents — sometimes for years — and can result in criminal charges."

This is a dangerous timeline.

The beginning of September is the traditional kickoff of the campaign season.

Trump tweeted that Mueller and his partisan investigators want to stretch their witch

hunt into the midterms so they can inflict the maximum political damage on the GOP.

Mueller's only chance to force Trump's impeachment is to orchestrate his investigation

so he can manipulate evidence and his findings in the most damaging light possible to help

elect Democrats.

Democrats winning control of Congress is the only way impeachment will move forward.

And that has been the goal of Mueller's silent coup since

day one.

in California's robust earthquake early warning system.

Can Moving Your Eyes Re-Code Your Memories? - Duration: 5:10.

[♪ INTRO ]

In the late 1980s, an American psychologist named Francine Shapiro noticed that if she

thought about disturbing memories while walking through the woods, the thoughts would dissipate

without her actively trying to do anything about them.

Eventually, she realized that when she recalled the traumatic memories as she walked, her

eyes were moving from side to side.

And that when that happened, it felt like the memory would bother her less the next

time it came to mind.

She started looking into the idea, and soon, eye movement desensitization reprocessing,

or EMDR therapy, was born.

But as promising as some research makes it sound, EMDR is actually pretty controversial,

and there's a whole lot of back and forth about whether the eye movements that set EMDR

apart really do anything.

The therapy is mostly used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, which can happen

when someone hasn't been able to process and recover from a trauma they've experienced.

Even years later, the trauma can affect their life in all kinds of ways — they might have

flashbacks, sleep and concentration problems, persistent feelings of anger and shame, or

any of a whole bunch of other symptoms.

As the name suggests, treating PTSD with EMDR therapy centers around those side-to-side

eye movements.

Its proponents think that by moving their eyes back and forth, patients can reprocess

traumatic memories that have basically gotten "stuck" because the usual ways the brain

deals with trauma didn't work.

In each session, you're told to focus on a specific traumatic memory: the details,

the emotions it brings up, and your reaction to it.

While you're doing that, the therapist holds up a finger in front of you and moves it quickly

from side to side for about 15 seconds while you follow the movement with your eyes.

You'd almost expect them to start saying "youuu are gettting sleeepierrr...", except

that this isn't hypnosis and you're not on a Hollywood set in the 1940s.

The hope is that as you recall different details related to the memories, they become less

and less disturbing.

Then, once you're more desensitized, you can start associating positive lines of thinking

with the previously traumatic memory.

Maybe something like "that wasn't my fault."

Or, "I am a good person."

The concept is so simple that it doesn't even seem like it should work.

And yet, meta-analyses of the research on EMDR have consistently shown that it does

improve PTSD symptoms — at least compared to no treatment at all.

The thing is, there's no real consensus about how it works.

Almost all effective therapies for PTSD involve reprocessing traumatic memories in some way,

since those stuck memories seem to be the main cause of the disorder.

With EMDR, researchers think the eye movements allow the brain to do that reprocessing, but

there's some debate about the exact mechanism behind it.

One possibility is that performing an extra task — moving your eyes back and forth — overloads

your working memory, which handles everything you're consciously doing at any given time.

Your working memory can only deal with a few different things at once, and the idea is

that if you start filling it up with tasks, there's less room for the negative stuff

that would normally be triggered by traumatic memories.

Other researchers think that the eye movements mimic what's known as an orienting response

— what your brain automatically does when you're exposed to a new environment or stimulus,

in order to process and understand it for the first time.

Or, EMDR could improve communication between the hemispheres of your brain, or the effect

could have to do with REM sleep, or … you get it.

There are a lot of options, but not a lot of answers.

Some researchers argue that this isn't a big deal — we use lots of things in medicine

that we don't entirely understand the mechanisms of.

Antidepressants, for example, or general anesthesia.

Others are a lot more skeptical.

Yes, meta-analyses have shown that EMDR is an effective treatment for PTSD.

But they've also consistently shown that it isn't more effective at treating PTSD

than similar therapies that don't involve moving your eyes around.

Like trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, where you're gradually re-exposed to the

trauma and learn to make sense of what happened and how it affects your thoughts and behaviors.

A meta-analysis published in 2006 looked at seven studies comparing these two therapies,

and found no evidence that one was more effective for PTSD than the other.

That might seem like a point in favor of EMDR, but if you're trying to sell the idea that

eye movements add a new, super effective layer to therapy, this isn't good news.

If the eye movements used in EMDR were actually triggering something in the brain to help

process traumatic memories, you'd expect it to work better than a therapy that's

similar in almost every way except the eye movements.

So, a lot of psychologists believe that even though EMDR is as effective as some other

treatments for PTSD, it doesn't actually offer anything revolutionary.

Their perspective is basically that what's effective isn't new, and what is new isn't effective.

But! Regardless of whether the eye movements offer something new, EMDR is still a highly recommended

treatment for PTSD.

Yes, there are a lot of questions about it, but we're not just going to throw an effective

treatment out the window.

If nothing else, the way therapists conduct EMDR — like the fact that it doesn't involve

too much discussion of the trauma — might work better for some patients.

But with future research, hopefully we'll learn more about how to help people process

trauma … and whether simple eye movements can hack your brain's memory circuits.

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow Psych!

we gave them attitude

or we took a cool word and made them into a cool logo

And then naturally that's how we started to work for big streetwear and sportswear brand along the way.

It's like that. That we had the idea of launching our own brand.

Up to this day , the ways we release our shirts remain the same.

Because it's mostly textile and the end of the day.

The added value is our design that we print out

Jason Bateman says he's "horrified" by his "mansplain" comments toward Jessica Walter - Duration: 5:41.

Jason Bateman is apologizing for comments he made during a New York Times interview with his "Arrested Development" co-stars in which he appeared to minimize Jeffrey Tambor's abuse toward Jessica Walter

He said he is not "insensitive to [Walter]" even though it may seem so from his interview

Bateman issued a mea culpa on Twitter and said, "Based on listening to the NYT interview and hearing people's thoughts online, I realize that I was wrong here

I sound like I'm condoning yelling at work. I do not. It sounds like I'm excusing Jeffery

I do not. It sounds like I'm insensitive to Jessica. I am not."In the group interview with The New York Times, Walter said of Tambor, "[in] almost 60 years of working, I've never had anybody yell at me like that on a set and it's hard to deal with, but I'm over it now

"Jessica Walter confirms Jeffrey Tambor verbally abused her on "Arrested Development," says she now forgives himDespite Walter eventually crying during the Times interview, her male co-stars, including Bateman, seemed to try to minimize or explain away the situation

Bateman said, "This is a family and families, you know, have love, laughter, arguments — again, not to belittle it, but a lot of stuff happens in 15 years

" Jeffrey Tambor to appear on Netflix's "Arrested Development" Season 5Bateman said more seriously that "in the entertainment industry it is incredibly common to have people who are, in quotes, 'difficult

'" Tambor said he has "profusely" apologized."Ms. Walter is indeed a walking acting lesson," Tambor said of his co-star

He acknowledged poor behavior on his other recent series, Amazon's "Transparent," where he's been dropped from the cast

"On 'Transparent,' you know, I had a temper and I yelled at people and I hurt people's feelings

And that's unconscionable, and I'm working on it and I'm going to put that behind me, and I love acting

"Jeffrey Tambor won't return to "Transparent" after Amazon's sexual misconduct investigationWalter said through tears, "Let me just say one thing that I just realized in this conversation

I have to let go of being angry at him. He never crossed the line on our show, with any, you know, sexual whatever

Verbally, yes, he harassed me, but he did apologize. I have to let it go. [Turns to Tambor

] And I have to give you a chance to, you know, for us to be friends again."Bateman and Tony Hale both said "we've all had moments," but Walter insisted "not like that -- that was bad

" Co-star Alia Shawkat also pushed back against Bateman's remark that the entertainment industry is full of "difficult" people

She said, "But that doesn't mean it's acceptable. And the point is that things are changing, and people need to respect each other differently

"Bateman was criticized online for trying to defend Tambor.Bateman said after listening to the audio from the interview and reading people's responses, he's "incredibly embarrassed and deeply sorry" to Walter

Bateman said instead of trying to "mansplain, or fix a fight," he should have made it clear that "there's never any excuse for abuse, in any form, from any gender

And, the victim's voice needs to be heard and respected. Period."
