Call for a ban on child sex robots

Call for a ban on child sex robots. There should be a ban on the import of sex robots designed to look like children, the author of a new report into the phenomenon has said.

Prof Noel Sharkey said that society as a whole needed to consider the impact of all types of sex robots. His Foundation for Responsible Robotics has conducted a consultation on the issue.

Only a handful of companies were currently making sex robots, said Prof Sharkey. But, he added, the upcoming robot revolution could change that.

The report, Our sexual future with robots, was written to focus attention on an issue barely discussed at the moment, he said.

The report acknowledged that finding out how many people actually owned such robots was difficult because the companies that made them did not release the numbers.

But, said Prof Sharkey, it was time society woke up to a possible future where humans and robots had sex,. We do need policymakers to look at it and the general public to decide what is acceptable and permissible, he said.

We need to think as a society what we want to do about it. I dont know the answers - I am just asking the questions..

Companies making sex robots include Android Love Doll, Sex Bot and True Companion. Most have previously made realistic, silicon-skinned sex dolls and are now considering or starting to ship dolls that can move and speak.

The most advanced of these is San Diego-based Abyss Creations, which ships a product known as Real Doll and is due to release a sex doll with artificial intelligence later this year.

Called Harmony, the robot moves its head and eyes and speaks via a tablet-enabled app. The company has already released the app, which allows users to programme moods and voices for an existing doll.

The report considers a few options for how such robots could be employed:. The last of these was the most problematic, said Prof Sharkey.

Sex dolls that resemble children do exist, and a court in Canada is currently determining whether owning one is illegal. Newfoundland resident Kenneth Harrison ordered a doll from a Japanese called called Harumi Designs.

The company is on a Canadian watch list, and the doll was intercepted at the airport. Mr Harrison was charged with possessing child pornography.

In Asia, there are already brothels that use adult sex dolls. And there are reports that a doll-maker operated one in Barcelona, although this has not been verified.

Dr Kathleen Richardson, a robot ethicist at De Montfort University, agreed with the report authors that child sex robots should be banned but stopped short of calling for a ban on all such sex dolls.

The real problem here is not the dolls but the commercial sex trade. Sex robots are just another type of pornography, she said. She believes such robots would inevitably increase social isolation.

She also criticises the report for what she said is a failure to address the issue of gender.

Why does the report have a picture of a male robot on the cover when we know that the doll market - which is driving this - is mainly female dolls?.

It is perpetrating the idea that this is gender-neutral, but the truth is that there are not many women buying such dolls, it is largely driven by men and male ideas of sexuality.

Prof Sharkey said that there was currently a mismatch between what those selling such dolls wanted their customers to believe about the dolls and the reality of what they offered.

The manufacturers of sex robots want to create an experience as close to a human sexual encounter as possible, he said. But robots cannot feel love, tenderness or form emotional bonds. The best that robots can do is to fake it..

Human-like.

Sex robots are a relatively new phenomenon and an obvious next stage for sex dolls, which have become increasingly sophisticated in recent years. Most have silicon skin, articulated metal skeletons and realistic features such as hair and eyes.

In the main, these dolls are designed in female form, although Sinthetics has had some commercial success with its male sex dolls. But Prof Sharkey has doubts about how human-like such dolls will become.

I cant see them as being like humans in the next 50 years. They will always be slightly spooky, and their conversation skills now are awful, he said.

Dr Richardson also questioned whether such robots would become mainstream or even be possible technologically. The report assumes that you can create a functioning robot that can respond to humans, but in fact it is incredibly complex, she said.

Exclusive: J. Robert Lunney, U.S. Navy of SS Meredith Victory discuss meeting South Korean President - Duration: 5:52.

The most emotional part of President Moon Jae-in's recent trip to Washington was his

visit to the National Museum of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He expressed gratitude to numerous Korean War veterans and their families.

One of them: Admiral Robert Lunney.

Our Moon Connyoung got to sit down with the only surviving veteran from the evacuation

operation that saved thousands of Koreans,... including the parents of President Moon.

"He said 'I see thousands of refugees on the beach' and he said 'I can take my ship in

and save as many as possible.'"

67 years is a life time ago for most of us.

But, not for Korean War veteran J. Robert Lunney, who has spent every day of those nearly

seven decades thinking about Christmas 1950.

Robert Lunney had just turned 23 in December 1950, an enlisted navy man who found himself

aboard the SS Meredith Victory, ship employed to carry supplies for U.S. servicemen during

the initial months of the Korean War.

Now 90 years-old, Lunney that Christmas in 1950 is still crystal clear in his mind.

"They were streaming by the thousands to the port of Heungnam.

Because at that time, the Chinese had cut off all of the land roots South.

We were totally encircled by the Chinese and we were the last ship.

And they drove by the thousands to the shore to the beach head at Heungnam, waiting to

be saved."

On the afternoon of December 22nd, in gale force winds and swirling snow, Admiral Lunney

and his crew began to load tens of thousands of refugees from Hungnam, North Korea.

"We had the weather, the cold winter.

And the trip south through the mine fields out of Hungnam fortunately we had the seventh

fleet firing into the Chinese positions.

We were able to accomplish the loading of 14 thousand people from December 22nd to December

23rd, which took us about 13 hours to load these people.

We also learned to say ' ', and that was to make refugees fast and keep them moving."

On Christmas Day, 1950, the US Merchant ship "SS Meredith Victory" arrived at a port on

the South Korean island of Geoje carrying over 14,000 refugees--men, women, and children.

Among them... were the parents and sister of Moon Jae-in, who was born in Geoje two

years later in January 1953.

He is now the President of the Republic of Korea and the very first thing he did on his

first visit to the U.S. as president was to meet and show gratitude of the Korean people

to the U.S. Marine Corps, the army and the soldiers.

"It was more dialogue from the president to myself.

I was the only one present yesterday at his talk at Quantico at the Jangjin Memoria in

the marine corp musuem.

He emphasized how important it was that his mother and father were rescued by us.

And he said that if it hadn't been our rescue of his mother and father and his older sister

as well, that he would not be here today.

He admitted how emotional he was over that thought and how appreciative he was of our

captain and our ship and the rescue of these people."

"What left the biggest impression on you about your meeting with President Moon Jae-in yesterday?"

"The greatest impression I had of a man of his stature was how personable he was.

How easy it was to relate to him.

He had a quick smile, he spent as much time with each of us that served in Korea and listened

to expressions of our gratitude in meeting him."

For Lunney, the meeting with President Moon helped close some old wounds we can't see.

But, the 90 year old veteran still remembers the war that never truly ended; a divided

nation still in conflict today.

"I've always hoped in my lifetime and expressed that even when I was in Korea to see reunification

of the Korean people.

The people in the North and the people in the South are Korean people.

When I looked out at them, I did not see a communist or an anti-communist or a North

Korean or a South Korean, or a friend or foe, I said all I see is Korean people."

Moon Connyoung, Arirang News, Washington.

Independence Day 2017 video - Duration: 6:44.

Hi I'm Kylie Brooks, my sign name is [shows sign name].

I want to talk about today, Independence Day.

I want to acknowledge the land I live on before I do that.

I am a Black African and I live in Toronto.

It is Indigenous land

under the One Dish One Spoon Two Row Wampum treaty.

The specific nations are:

Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation

Anishinaabe

Haudenosaunee

So, on the topic of language--

So, on the topic of Independence Day...

To Indigenous people living in USA,

Independence Day represents

the intentional oppression that they have went through from the United States of America (USA)

for almost 250 years since 1776, when the USA was founded.

I want to briefly discuss an issue that Indigenous people

go through everyday.

However, there are many more issues, just to be clear.

Indigenous language preservation:

Many Indigenous people do not know their languages

or they don't want to pass it onto their children.

They had European languages forced onto them

when they were colonized by European countries -

France, Spain, Britian, Russia.

Their languages were once illegal.

Why is that a problem?

Well, Indigenous people have lived off of the land

for thousands of years before European colonization.

Their varied languages and cultures are linked to the land.

So things like:

Animals

Medicine

Justice

Seasons

What to do at birth and what to do at death

Spirituality

How to have fun

All of these things are linked to the land.

They are embedded in Indigenous languages which, when used, influences culture.

And culture influences language.

Without Indigenous languages, all these things get lost forever.

Ways of knowing are lost forever.

Cultures are lost forever.

I hope you liked this vlog.

As always, please take the time to learn from Indigenous people

themselves about this topic

and see what you can do

to support language preservation.

Thanks, ILY, bye!
