Hello!
I would like to present the Scania G 320 distribution truck
that you see parked behind me.
It is a distribution truck because its primary function
is to distribute large quantities of goods over relatively short distances in urban or similar environments.
The truck's cab is rather on the small side.
The performance of the engine, 320 horsepower,
also hints at the fact that it is not going to be carrying 40-tonne trailers.
And if we step a little closer to the truck,
we can also see that it is essentially a distribution superstructure,
a solid box truck,
which makes it eminently suitable for transporting goods requiring protection.
At the back, it is fitted with a tail lift.
The most important feature of this truck
is that in contrast with classical vehicles
with only one source of power –usually a diesel engine –
this one has two available power sources.
And the solution is here,
this truck is a hybrid vehicle.
Behind the signage, there are actually the batteries,
as the essence of the hybrid configuration
is that along with the traditional diesel engine
it has an auxiliary electric motor.
That electric motor is partly fuelled by the batteries.
The vehicle itself can charge the batteries, too,
using its diesel engine as well as energy regained when it brakes and decelerates.
Diesel engine, electric engine
– well, they both have some advantages and some disadvantages.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of the electric engine
is that it is quiet.
Being quiet is very important in today's noisy world.
As we know, we all need some silence every day.
When the electric engine is used to move the vehicle,
it's logical that the diesel engine can be turned off.
When the diesel engine is turned off, we save fuel,
and the fuel saving also implies that
the vehicle will not emit any harmful pollutants.
As the truck has a quiet operating mode,
it can enter areas where being quiet is a requirement,
and this extends the functionality of the vehicle significantly.
During the day, the truck can operate as any other truck,
but it can also be used at night, to enter areas where a vehicle with an internal combustion engine could not go.
This makes the truck much more useful.
So the advantages of this hybrid truck can be summarized in four points:
first and foremost, it is quiet.
Secondly, it has great fuel economy,
as it uses no fuel at all when it is running on the electric engine,
and in parallel with that, thirdly, the harmful emissions of the truck are also reduced.
And fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, thanks to the underlying utility and economy of the unit
as well as the fact that it can be used in many areas and at times where and when traditional trucks could not go,
the truck is also a great deal more versatile in its function,
allowing owners to realise extra revenue from haulage itself.
I have already mentioned the batteries
that are hidden here, right behind me.
The truck has another very important technical feature as well:
the transmission is composed of an engine,
a clutch mechanism, then the gearbox, the propeller shaft, and finally the rear axle
– the electric engine is integrated into that drive line,
built into the clutch box.
That electric engine is capable
of moving the vehicle
even when the traditional diesel engine – the vehicle's main source of power –
is turned off,
or only idling
so as to keep certain auxiliary functions and equipment of the truck operational.
But let me emphasise again,
it is very important that the truck is willing and able
to move under solely electric power.
The next question is, how far can this truck go using the electric engine.
This depends on the circumstances.
But as a general average,
the truck can travel about two kilometres in completely quiet mode,
running only on the electric engine.
That two kilometres is quite enough to get through city areas or road sections
– around hospitals, busy city centres, housing estates, for instance –
where noise would cause a disproportionate degree of disturbance to the people living or working there.
I will mention some other averages at the end.
As far as measured values are concerned, which we have received from the factory as results of extended tests,
in ideal circumstances and with a good driver,
an approximately 18% fuel saving can be realised under distribution conditions.
The reduction in emissions depends on
whether the vehicle's 9-litre engine is running on traditional diesel fuel or biodiesel.
In the case of biodiesel, when that is combined with the hybrid mode,
CO2 emissions can be cut by as much as 92%.
If traditional diesel fuel is used, augmented with the hybrid system,
the 18% fuel saving will logically result in an 18% reduction of environmental emissions.
Those are the figures we get as a first approximation.
As for extended usage, the amount of extra use that individual users can get from the vehicle is highly individual,
so it is very difficult to specify any figures about that in general.
One thing is for sure, this truck has a great many advantages
in contrast with, say, a passenger car,
where these advantages, such as the reduced fuel consumption and environmental emissions, would be less marked.
With a truck, they are highly significant.
As this is a vehicle for business use,
it would be advantageous to use it in areas where its deployment is particularly warranted.
So I would certainly suggest
that transport companies who believe that
such a hybrid truck has a place in their segment of the industry
contact us, so we can discuss whether it would really work for them.
And if we find that it would, let's negotiate
and let's put the first hybrid vehicle on the road in Hungary.
