I'm Ava Jae, and this is bookishpixie.
So a question I get *a lot*, especially when I mention BEYOND THE RED is the tenth book
I wrote, is would you go back and try to publish one of your old manuscripts?
And when I was writing those manuscripts and putting them away, I put them away thinking,
"Well, I can always come back to this."
And I mean, I *can* go back to them if I want to...I just...don't really want to.
Out of those nine, there's one, maybe two at most that I would consider going back to.
But each of those manuscripts would require massive rewrites.
And I mean, right now, I just wanna keep moving forward.
I have too many ideas that I want to get back to.
That's not to say I'll *never* go back to any of those manuscripts, I mean, I can't see the
future; I just don't have the desire to right now.
That said, I know oftentimes when people ask it's because they're scared that if they trunk
a manuscript, they'll be wasting all that time and energy they put into it.
But I don't consider any of those nine manuscripts that I wrote a waste at all.
I needed to write them.
Those books taught me how to finish a book, and how to space out your chapters, and how
to write in multiple perspectives, and first person, and past tense and present tense,
and how to write snappy dialogue, and build worlds and characters, and the list goes on, and on, and on.
I learned *so much* from writing every single one of those books.
And to be honest, I never would've written BEYOND THE RED if I hadn't written those other nine books first.
I honestly consider myself lucky for having written so many books before I got published,
because I am so comfortable with my process that I don't have the same insecurities and
freak outs that some other debuts have who only wrote one or two manuscripts before they got published.
That's not to say I'm better or worse than any of those debuts, but I definitely have
had conversations with some other writers who were less comfortable with their process
and were freaking out about whether or not they were gonna finish books and I haven't
had to worry about that quite as much because I wrote nine other books before BEYOND THE
RED so by the time it got published I was pretty confident in my ability to write books.
That's not to say that I don't have other worries, or I haven't had books that didn't
behave, and made me question my process—that definitely happens, and continues to happen—
but I am definitely better off for having written and put away those nine books.
And the biggest lesson I learned writing and putting away those manuscripts is writing is never a waste.
So whether you put away one book or five books or ten books before you get published, be
confident in the knowledge that you haven't wasted anything.
I firmly believe the more you write, the better writer you'll become as long as you continue
pushing yourself and doing everything you can to keep learning.
So if that means writing and putting away nine books before you get published like me, then so be it.
You're going to be a better writer at the end of it.
