Hello everyone, my name is Andrew and welcome to the video.

So today I'd like to talk about how can the brain be quiet?

Now consciousness as we know it, is very loud, very noisy, and we seem to face this with

more noise, more loudness, more methods, more ways to pacify to calm the mind, the brain,

but does this actually work?

Isn't this just like a temporary 20-minute hack relief and then it's back to the noise

and the clutter and stress of life.

So I want to talk about how can we really quiet the mind?

Not just a 20-minute relief and then back to stress and all the chattering and the whole

rat race that we have established in the world today.

I want us to really deeply find out how can this brain be quiet?

If that is possible.

So throughout education, our entire lives, we have been using one small part of the brain.

And isn't that memory?

Isn't that thinking?

The intellectual part of the brain.

Now that's all we talk about in schools, that's all we know.

So after school when we go out and we have problems with ourselves or we have problems

in relationship with others, we try to solve it like solving a math problem or answering

a question in English class, in History class.

We solve it with answers, with ideas, concepts, solutions, which all cry for the need of more

answers, concepts, solutions because of its natural incompleteness.

So therefore, we try to bring about an effect that is whole, that is everlasting.

However, this effect becomes the cause of a new problem, which we seek to find or bring

about a new effect that will help us and we're just caught in this constant chain of this

effect becoming a cause and on and on and on.

So what can this intellectual brain do in order to quiet itself?

Now we've been told to quiet the mind we have to figure out or we have to take advice from

others, answers, solutions.

So we do this and we see that it's not working because it cries for more answers, more solutions

with every solution I get.

So now seeing this, the intellectual brain seeing that doing it this way or going this

way in any direction only brings about more noise, more problems.

So why don't we go into what this intellectual brain is?

Why don't we try to understand it, get a feel for it?

Because we're going to be using this in our lives tremendously.

It's a big part of life and yet we're not interested in understanding this mechanical

tool that is governing every action, every thing.

It is like the center of everything we do, which is dangerous because what is the center?

The center is "me" the center is "I" right?

I want to improve.

I want to make the world a better place.

I want to build and construct things.

So isn't it important to understand this "I", this intellectual tool, in order to naturally

see when and where to use it, to intelligently see when and where to use this intellectual

brain?

Now this is a very small part of the brain that we are using.

So can we use the whole brain, which is intelligent, which is quiet, which is stillness, which

is silence?

Now in order to do that, doesn't this brain through understanding, getting to see the

whole movement of this, seeing itself and how anywhere it goes, anything it does, brings

about more noise, seeing that!

Then what is the action of this intellectual brain?

So when it understands itself is sees that hey there's a problem occurring in my daily

life and if I do this or if I try to do that then I see this solution only brings about

more noise.

So it's come to a point where I don't know what to do and can it remain with that I don't

know?

Can it stay uncertain?

And therefore, there is a possibility of this small intellectual part of the brain being

quiet because it really sees that it doesn't know what to do, because everything it does

brings more noise, absolutely, factually.

So seeing that it's quieting itself right?

And therefore, other parts of the brain are now active, because not only have we been

using just this intellectual part of the brain, but it's been super stimulated throughout

conditioning.

Now conditioning could be anything, conditioning through our culture, our traditions, through

advertisements, propaganda, through our own food.

So this kind of constant stimulation makes this small part of the brain so super active

and it overpowers everything else of the brain.

So now that it sees the futility of any action it does, then doesn't quietness itself come?

And therefore, the whole entire brain is active and alive, intelligently, therefore, it is

quiet, obviously.

Now is that possible?

Can we ask ourselves if this is possible?

If this quietness can come?

Because searching for answers obviously brings about more incompleteness and more answers

that are needed or required to feel that we have come to a quiet conclusion.

Hi, my name is Emily, and this is my girlfriend Monica.

Before we get into the surprise of the century, I thought I'd give you a little bit of context.

Monica and I met when we were 14 and we were best friends for the next 4 years.

her girlfriend.

Thus, the start of a long-distance relationship.

One in which we only get to see each other around 2 to 3 trips a year.

A 10-hour drive isn't exactly something we can do frequently on a college student budget,

not to mention that I don't have a driver's license, and have never flown before.

I know she's always wished I would surprise her, but there's never been a feasible way

for me to do so.

After almost 2 years together, it can get a little frustrating.

This year has been particularly difficult, and our visits until we graduate are going

to be limited to less than a week together at a time.

Since the summer, we've only had 72 total hours together, and we wouldn't be seeing

each other for a couple more months.

Or... so she thought.

Michaela texted me randomly, and it was like, out of the blue...

On November 29th, I got a text from Monica's roommate asking if I was willing to learn

how to fly.

Her LGBT club at school was going to throw a gay prom-- the Gayla, if you will-- at the

end of January and her friends wanted to surprise her.

Naturally, I was in.

When I think about the actual trip, I'm actually really excited for it.

I made a packing list already.

And we've got like 16 days, so we've got time.

I'm excited, and I'm excited to surprise her.

I figured out with Sam, it looks like for the trip, um, Sam's gonna pick me up from

the airport and I'm gonna be staying with Sam for the night.

This morning, I got my flight finalized.

So, tomorrow I'll be flying for the first time ever.

I'm gonna go surprise my girlfriend at a gay prom that her friends are throwing, and she

has no idea I'm coming.

And that's really exciting.

So the prom is Saturday night, but I'm flying out-- tomorrow is Friday.

I'm flying out early, early in the morning and I'm gonna be in my girlfriend's college

town by noon.

And I'm gonna be staying with a mutual friend that we have, um, overnight, and surprise

her at the dance on Saturday.

So, that's exciting, this is the first time I've ever surprised her, so it's really exciting.

Many people expect to see the Army National Guard during natural and man-made disasters.

However, Huntington, West Virginia has a bit of a different twist in response to the opioid

crisis that is crippling the area.

Yet there will be no Humvees blocking roads or soldiers on the street corners with long

guns.

No martial law or mandatory curfew, yet the guard could be deployed in this state for

years as long as local law enforcement believes help is necessary and beneficial.

This recent escalated effort comes just after Congress voted to allocate some $6 billion

towards fighting the opioid crisis in its most recent spending bill.

The governor of West Virginia describes the crisis as a "disaster of epic proportion."

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice states – "We have to stop this terrible drug epidemic.

We have to.

If we don't, it will cannibalize us."

Huntington is currently known as the overdose capital of America as the city currently doubles

the national average of overdoses.

Many blame the decline of the coal industry and the lack of gainful employment opportunities.

The drugs are readily available and idle people are willing to do much to numb the pain of

everyday life and hopelessness.

Law enforcement in the area is already stretched thin and it is causing a significant and complex

problem that requires unique and innovative solutions to the multifaceted issue.

The opioid crisis claimed more than 64,000 lives in 2016.

That is more lives than were claimed in the entire Vietnam war, as well as the AIDS/HIV

epidemic during peak years.

$8.8 billion.

That is what a new study estimates the opioid epidemic is costing the West Virginia economy

every year.

That is 12 percent of the state's GDP, and more than any other state.

The study takes into account what states are spending on health care and substance abuse

treatment, criminal justice costs and lost worker productivity, as well as the societal

burden of fatal overdoses.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, West Virginia's public health commissioner states of the economic

impact of the opioid crisis – "We're losing $8.8 billion per year, at least one-eighth

of the economy.

It seems we've been grossly underestimating the economic impact."

According to the study, West Virginia's economic burden from the opioid crisis comes

out to $4,793 per resident.

Maryland had the next-highest burden, at $3,366 per person.

Nebraska had the lowest, at $465 per resident.

The primary role of the guards is to provide technical and analytic support, with helicopters

helping out during drug busts, and serving warrants.

Guardsman are manning hotlines and working on computers inside Huntington Police Department's

Criminal Investigation Bureau by helping to track down dealers and drug networks.

All of this in an effort to allow the local police to be boots on the ground and focus

on what is happening in the streets of Huntington.

Hank Dial, chief of Huntington Police Dept states of this unique and drastic solution

to the massive problem crippling the area – "We work on this all day every day.

We have put all of our resources to it and we recognize that we will need additional

resources and that's why partnering agencies are so important to us."

Just last week a guard answered a call that led to the bust of a dealer along with the

recovery of 430 grams of fentanyl, a drug that is said to be far more powerful and more

highly addictive than heroin.

430 grams has a street value of roughly $86,000.

The WV Gazette reports on another recent study conducted by West Virginia University where

the economic impact to the state's economy was measured at nearly $1 billion.

The study estimates some $322 million in lost productivity due to overdose fatalities, along

with another $316 million in lost productivity because of the significant number of addicts

who are not working to peak level.

There is also more than $320 million tied up dealing with the opioid epidemic.

In 2012, then-state Attorney General Darrell McGraw filed lawsuits against more than a

dozen drug wholesalers, accusing the companies of fueling West Virginia's drug problem

by shipping an excessive number of pain pills to the state.

The lawsuit alleged that the drug problem cost the state $430 million a year, and projected

that those costs would rise to $695 million by 2017.

The Washington Post reports –

"Over the past decade, nearly 21 million prescription painkillers have been shipped

to a tiny town in West Virginia, a state where more people have overdosed on opioids and

died than in any other in the nation.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has been investigating the opioid epidemic,

revealed that 20.8 million hydrocodone and oxycodone pills have been delivered to Williamson,

W.Va., a town with a community college, a rail yard — and fewer than 3,200 residents,

according to the most recent Census figures.

That's more than 6,500 pills per person — though not all of the painkillers stayed

in Williamson.

As the Charleston Gazette-Mail reported, committee leaders sent letters to two regional drug

distributors, asking why the companies oversupplied this town, among others, with painkillers.

"These numbers are outrageous, and we will get to the bottom of how this destruction

was able to be unleashed across West Virginia," Reps. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) and Frank Pallone

Jr. (D-N.J.) said in a statement, according to the Gazette-Mail.

Walden is chairman of the committee, and Pallone is the ranking Democrat."

Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, a West Virginia National Guard commander states of the current solution

to involve the National Guard – "We are solving a problem in our country and, at the

same time, making sure we have the highest level of readiness to respond to something

else that may be out there, somewhere else in the world."

U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins, R-W.V., said this drastic step is needed to make a dent in the

raging opioid crisis, stating – "We have people's lives at risk.

We have horrifically lost way too many lives as result.

It is a bold action but, you know what, we need to take action and we are doing that…"
