Today I'm doing a little demo to show you
how to paint an eye with an animal subject.
Hi, I'm Fanny Duhaime, I'm a painter
and my mission is to help you propel your career as an artist.
I present to you Jack,
or rather, the beginning of Jack.
It's the beautiful Fox Terrier that serves me as a subject
for the custom order that a customer passed me.
I will use it to show you how I am doing
to paint the eyes of an animal.
I'll show you that with the handsome Jack.
You see, I've already started his ear,
There is a bit of hair here,
the eye is right there.
I did the ear first,
for not having to put my hand on the eye
I show you what I use to do my portrait,
This is a sketch I made to the client with the Photoshop software
I modified his picture, I have my little technique to me
for it to give a little style that I'm going to do.
So the customer approved that, that's what I'm inspired by.
We are just going to enlarge his eye.
I always keep it next to my canvas as a landmark.
I started peeling here, because everything is superimposed
The closer you get to the eye, all the colors come on top of one another.
So it's on there I'm going to cheat,
to really have the expression I'm going to start with the pupil,
then after that I'll go away so we'll have to do some corrections
you will understand by seeing the demonstration.
If I show you my palette here
I have the little pink serving for the ears,
my brown, white, black,
and then all my shading gradients
that I can have need of
I adjust as I go
When I work the eyes I will use three sizes of brushes,
The little liner,
a brush a little bigger,
and a brush "mop".
We go with these three there.
We will start with what is really black
Here I started to add a little paler,
a little more brown.
And here we do not worry about tapping,
to see our brushstrokes,
we'll come and fix it afterwards.
Small touches of light in the pupil
I left them empty
to take the right shade
do not try to paint an eye without looking at a picture,
without having a landmark
you really need to put the points of light in the right places
in the eye so that we really feel
that the gaze is directed to the right place,
not to make it look crooked.
Then that's the points of light
it's things that can be touched up once the base is dry
we can come back to make corrections,
it's all about mixing with oil
sometimes we want a hue, especially as the white reflection
be really distinct from the rest
you come back over once the eye is dry.
What is fun with oil is that we can always retouch our colors
I started too pale, I just add a little black
to have the right shade, I can even go back to play here again
it's not dry I really have the time to work well
to make beautiful gradients, I love to paint with oil.
At this stage you must not think that it is connected
that the expression is not there
I often tried to redo, to redo again
the pupil, go add details,
then I was trying to get my expression out there
but that's not just the expression
it's all the outline, the eyebrows,
the angles, the hollow of the eye,
so you really have to wait until you're done with everything around you
before saying, ok, my expression is not correct
I have to retouch this or that thing
I can not know at this point, what I need to correct
or if there is something to change
we must really continue and after that we come to do the alterations.
I already know that my pupil is successful,
but I will approach the camera so that you can see the gradients.
That's pretty good the best I can show you,
I will try to show it to you once finished. So we will continue that.
We take a brush a little bigger here
otherwise it will be long.
Do not be afraid to take your time, eyes are one of the first things
that I do, always. Because once the look is successful,
The rest of the canvas is super easy
All that emerges from a character
it starts from the look
so it's important that it's successful, take your time.
I'm going to show you a little trick to make the hair
but I will still make a next video where I will show you in more detail
I just put a lot of paint
This is where we will go to overlap too
worse in the background the colors will mix
do not overdo it either
So we take our brush "mop"
Always have a towel to wipe
We do a little,
we come to wipe,
do not extend our color too far
There you have to be careful because this brush
in addition to extending
he removes a little
that's why I'm still pretty thick at the beginning
Because here we can find we see the bottom of the canvas
have to come make small alterations, there I hooked my color
here it's supposed to be pale
it can also be done with a brush
Always very well wipe
the brush
before coming to fade
It's important to do it just where there is hair
do not go take the eye contour
that too is something that can be touched up when the painting is finished
There, in terms of the pupil, we just passed
just to say that we fade a little
the hairs barely touch the canvas
But by tapping like that here and wiping
regularly, we just erase all the brush strokes
So my white one of a while ago I was talking to you
is no longer good white because I just hang it
So once my canvas is going to be dry I'm going back to put a beautiful white to make a beautiful reflection.
So here we will continue down
For my colors I always made myself to my photot
because there are really a lot of gradients
small shades that can make all the difference
if we really want to give a more or less realistic appearance to the canvas
especially when it is a portrait, it is necessary that the person can recognize his animal,
or recognize your child
So we try to respect as much as possible the variances of hue
even if it's not 100% real colors
animal or person
often when I do portraits of people, I use sepia tones.
But for real someone does not have the skin of the sepia color
but it is important that I respect each variant of hue
so darker, paler in some places,
where is the skin lighter
it's more hollow where there is the hollow of the nose,
at the corner of the lips,
it is important to respect all that to give the realistic side.
If your canvas is not a portrait, do not worry
at that moment you can do what you want,
respect your style to you.
I will not go further than that at the bottom,
the goal is just to make eye.
That's really the shadow below his hair
because he, all his eyebrow comes over
So that's something that yes, I'm going to come here to make his hair whiter here
who falls over his eye, because his eye
is more hollow, that's something that I'll have to come back
once it's going to be dry, because I'm going to have a lot of hair a little thinner
to do over painting
I can not do that while it's wet
it's really dry once.
So here it is just hair that will fall over the eyes
So for now I'm just going to stop
here, like that and when it's going to be dry,
I'm going to go back and do all my hair over the pupil.
And that's it, so the expression of the eye is given,
It will really be a nice job to do all the hair,
The more we do, the more we complete the face, the more the expression takes shape
I know that I have the expression, that's what I want,
So I stop there, the rest
if I have touch-ups to go do, I'll do them once the whole face is going to be done
We take a step back, we look at our canvas from a distance,
and we'll see right away if there is anything to change.
So here, I hope it will help you in your own creations
