China's J-20 Black Eagle fighter jets 'will force US to BACK OFF' with 'regular patrols'
ADVANCED Chinese fighter jets will be sent for regular missions to deal with "new air
security threats" over the South China Sea, the People's Liberation Army has said.
Two new military planes – the J-20 stealth fighter and the Sukhoi Su-35 jet – have
"significantly boosted" China's air power, the People's Liberation Army (PLA)
said.
Last week the PLA – the world's largest army – said the J-20, dubbed Black Eagle,
was ready to be deployed for military operations.
Sukhoi Su-35s – China's deadliest and most advanced fighter jets – were dispatched
to the region for a military training exercise just days earlier.
Now the PLA has said "more regular" patrols will be carried out by Chinese warplanes over
the South China Sea in an apparent warning to the US and others.
In a bellicose statement, senior PLA Air Force researcher Wang Mingzhi said J-20 and Su-35
jets will give China the upper hand in the region.
"The addition of Su-35 fighter jets will enable the Chinese military to handle the
complicated air and maritime situations of the South China Sea," Wang said.
Boasting about the PLA's achievements, Wang said the Air Force has transformed "advanced
technology" into "combat strength" faster than the US.
The Chengdu J-20 is a fifth generation stealth fighter designed to deliver precision airstrikes
on enemy warships, aircraft and ground forces.
Chinese President Xi Jinping commissioned the aircraft to rival the radar-evading US
F-22 Raptor air-to-air combat jet as part of his plan to modernise the army.
China reportedly bought 24 Su-35 fighter jets, nicknamed "the killer in the sky" by military
analysts, for £1.4billion ($2billion) from Russia in 2015.
"It's a great airplane and very dangerous, especially if they make a lot of them,"
said one senior US military official.
Both planes are to be used in the South China Sea – a strategically key and resource rich
region.
A bitter territorial feud between China and several southeast Asian countries has given
rise to simmering military tensions in the region in recent years.
The US and Britain are also embroiled in the dispute having both vowed to send warships
to the tinderbox region.
Last month China vowed to take "necessary measures" to protect its sovereignty after
a US Navy destroyer sailed near disputed territory claimed by Beijing.
Ni Lexiong, a military analyst from Shanghai, said the deployment of the J-20 and Su-35
jets was a "big step forward" for the PLA.
China's recent drills and announcements were aimed at "surprising foreign countries",
namely the US, according to Ni.
"These jets are now ready years ahead of when the US was expecting them to be.
"This is going to deter the US and it also means China is prepared as relations with
the US become more tense," Ni said.
