Ayo! It's Bryan here. Today, going to be talking about the San Francisco 49ers and
going to be talking about the 2017 NFL Draft and looking back at that under
John Lynch last year. It was a very good draft. If I had to give a grade now I'd
probably give it in A to be honest with you. I thought this was a good foundation
for the next couple of years for the 49ers. I just feel like everyone that was
part of this draft class contributed to the 49ers this year. I'm going to be talking
most of these players. I won't talk about every single player, but I'm just going to
be highlighting some of the players that I thought were freakin fantastic or had
a good impact on the 49ers this year and that will have a impact in the future.
So, let's just get into it. Now, I think the first rounders Solomon Thomas, Rueben
Foster, they both were really good especially the latter one, Rueben Foster.
That guy was just a freaking beast. Solomon Thomas, kind of an interesting case.
I thought he showed a little bit of flash of greatness, but at the same time,
he was kind of injured. He didn't really find his way too crazy. I mean, he did
have a couple of nice plays with some tackles with losses. I don't know what
games exactly, but he had some potential just this year. A little clinky, a little
clunky for the defensive line in general, but Reuben Foster man! That guy is just
a freaking beast. His motor is just amazing. Really good change from outside
linebacker to middle linebacker now after Navarro Bowman got released by the 49ers.
I see so much potential in this guy. He could be Patrick Willis. He could be
up there with Luke Kuechly, Bobby Wagner as the best linebacker in the NFL.
I see that coming in 2018 if he can stay healthy, if he can stay out of trouble.
I mean, marijuana? I don't know. It's kind of a wedge issue I guess you can say.
It's kind of tough because state laws, they have different types of regulations
for marijuana. California I think it's pretty much free to do recreationally.
In Alabama, he got arrested for that unfortunately. Hopefully, he can stay out
of trouble and he had an incident I think during the season with... I forgot who
the teammate was exactly, but I think you all know. He kind of got out of that situation.
That's good he ran away from that situation. I'll probably have a
picture of the incident there. I think guys remember during the season, but this
guy has shown a lot of potential and I'm really excited for Rueben Foster coming
in to 2018. I think if he has a full season, a full offseason another one, I'm
just ready to see him blossom out even more. Maybe he could become Defensive
Player of the Year. Last year, I thought he could be Rookie of the Year, but he
didn't play a lot of games. He got injured
in Week one against the Panthers and missed a couple games. He was kind of
injured most of the time, but whenever he played, man he was a freaking beast.
I love me Rueben Foster. So hopefully, he can stay out of trouble this
offseason and we can just move on, get ready for 2018 because that's the one
highlighted player that I wanted to talk about this whole time and I love me
Rueben Foster as I said. Great 1st round picks to be honest with you.
I know Solomon Thomas is a little incomplete, but I feel like he's going to
blossom out even more when 2018 happens and when he has another full off season to learn
Robert Saleh's 4-3 defense. It's mostly pass rushing, so I guess it's not a lot
of playbook as much as like a defensive back or a linebacker. I feel that they're
both going to be good and Rueben Foster is going to be even better in 2018 than he was
in 2017. Now Ahkello Witherspoon, third-round pick. At first, he was
struggling a little bit, but I think he blossom out near the end the season.
He had a couple of interceptions, nice ones. I think he had one against the Jags and
Blake Bortles and we all know Jacksonville's defense. I know he didn't play
against Jacksonville defense, but still. Blake Bortles, he was living the world on
fire a little bit. I know I said a lot of things about Blake Bortles, but last year?
He was a pretty damn good quarterback. I will say that. I'll give him some credit for that.
I'm just excited to see some more Ahkello Witherspoon. I don't know if he can
be the dominant number one cornerback, but I feel like he can be a pretty
damn good cornerback and he's shown that near the end of the season.
I'm excited to see what he can do. This is a very young backfield led by Eric Reid.
I don't know if Eric Reid is going to be leaving free agency, but we'll see what happens.
I would love to see him come back. I mean, if you asked me the beginning of last
season, do I want to keep Eric Reid? I was on the fence, but after seeing them play
this whole year of going from free safety I think to linebacker and then to
strong safety, I think that's how it went? He's been blossoming and he's back to
his 2013 Pro Bowl form. I was happy to see that and we'll see what happens if
he decides to stay in free agency. Hopefully he does, but we'll see what happens.
Other notable picks? CJ Beathard, quarterback. Took over for Brian Hoyer
getting benched in Week 6 against the Redskins. Had a pretty good showing I
would say as a rookie. I know a lot of people kind of criticized him a little
bit and what-have-you, but I don't want to criticize him too much. He's a rookie.
He tried his best in the dubious circumstances that he had. He got sacked
a couple of times. So he was a tough dude. I feel like he can be even better in
2018 if he ever sees the field. Maybe, Jimmy Garoppolo. I don't know.
Hopefully, everything's alright with him, but god forbid. If something does happen, then I
think CJ Beathard can step up and do a
serviceable job and do like a Nick Foles type job like he is right now in
Philadelphia in the playoffs. Maybe something like that along those lines.
It doesn't have to be the best quarterback, but just enough where they can keep the
sink shipping and afloat in sea if you know what I mean. So I'll see more CJ
Beathard in 2018 maybe. I'm not sure, but I feel like sitting on the bench for
another season or this whole offseason. Learning Kyle Shanahan's offense in
case, I think it's going to be good. Another worthy pick is George Kittle. George Kittle
has come alive this whole season in my opinion, especially with Jimmy Garoppolo
near the end the season, but, with a two tight end system with him and Garrett Celek.
Garrett Celek has really shown his talent as well this season. I know he's been
alright for the past couple years kind of. But, with Jimmy Garoppolo now, I'm telling you,
Jimmy Garoppolo has made an impact for all these players on the offensive
side of the ball. I feel like with both those tight ends together, I think they
can be a really good threat on the offensive side the ball this year in 2018.
So, I'm really excited to see that. Props to George Kittle. He had some nice
games this year as a 49er. So I'm ready to see some more. I think the last one I
want to talk about is Adrian Colbert. He shown light as well. I mean, these
defensive backs, these defensive players, they have shown themselves near the end
the season that's really good under the five game winning streak. I know early on
they struggled big-time, but it was more Brian Hoyer not doing crap and
struggling big time on offense and always getting three and outs and then
the defense can't really do anything because they're so damn tired for
getting on the field long. But with Jimmy Garoppolo playing, they got some time to rest.
They don't have to rush in and rush out real quickly. I'm just happy for this
team overall and Adrian Colbert. I think he's one of the great stories right now
for the 49ers. I don't know if a lot of people are talking about it, but I'm
pretty sure if you're Niner Nation, in San Francisco and Santa Clara, I'm pretty
sure you're talking about Adrian Colbert because he's a hard hitter and
I'm ready to see some more of him as a safety because at after taking over for Tartt,
he's really shown to be a great defensive back for the 49ers and pretty
good solid place right now as defensive backs. I think Adrian Colbert, Eric Reid
are the very, very deep safety field and then I think Ahkello Witherspoon, Dontae
Johnson are on the opposite sides of corner, which that's not too bad at all.
I wouldn't be opposed to them starting Week One. Maybe they can go after the
cornerback in the draft. I'm not sure. I don't want to talk about that yet, but I
feel like right now if this was the week one starting,
I would be happy to see that line up because I think they have shown a lot of
potential the end the season. This year, I think they can blossom even more in 2018.
So that's going to be pretty much it you guys. John Lynch, got to give him a lot of
credit for his first draft ever. I don't think he's ever done this before.
He's done some analytics or whatever during his time in Fox, but running the team,
running a draft, this is his first time. Very impressive. I think this can be up
there at one of the greatest drafts in NFL history if they make the playoffs
and maybe go to a Super Bowl in the next couple of years. I'm not sure. I don't
want to jump to conclusion yet, but right now, this looks like a really good
foundation for the 49ers to try to qualify for the playoffs and be playoff
contenders for the next couple of years. Props to Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch
especially as general manager for doing this draft and hopefully they have a
good 2018. Please let me know what you guys think about this whole draft.
Overall, I would give it an "A" because everyone for the most part has
contributed to the 49ers success in the 5 game winning streak and tried their best during
the losing streak. The 1-9 or 1-10 part of the season. They've tried their
best to do whatever they can. I thought they did a pretty good job. So I think in 2018
with Jimmy Garoppolo as quarterback and all these players getting a full
offseason, I think it's going to be even better. I'm ready for that and if you
