Hey guys and welcome back to my channel!
Today I am here to do my January wrap-up
and talk about all of the books that I read during the month of January.
So the first book that I want to talk about in this video is The Gloaming by Kirsty
Logan and I have actually already read this book. I read it for the first time
back in August. Um and yeah basically at the start of the year I was going to pick up
Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas, it's the seventh book and I will be talking about
that in a little bit because I did end up actually picking it up. Yeah the
reason why I wanted to pick up that book was because I'd only just finished Tower
of Dawn and I almost did pick it up and then for some reason I was like...I kind
of want a break away from this world and I ended up picking up The Gloaming
instead and I'm really glad that I did because I really enjoyed it.
So for those of you that don't know what this book is about it's basically about Mara who
lives on this island and this island has sort of a fairytale magical realism
aspect to it, where basically everyone on the island when they die they turn to
stone and they get set up upon the hill on the island...and basically the sea has
sort of a magical realism aspect to it and if you ask something of the sea
then it has to receive something as a price for that and basically one of the
members of Mara's family was taken and most of this book is kind of set in the
future after this and kind of deals with how Mara's family has had to cope and
how maybe they're not coping with it and basically Mara meets this girl called
Pearl and falls in love and it's about their relationship and how it kind of
gives Mara a new life basically.
And then the second book that I read was Kingdom
of Ash by Sarah J Maas and I did enjoy this book, as most of you will know
if you have watched my catching up a series vlog thing that I did but it
certainly wasn't my favorite book in this series because I just was bored for
a lot the middle section in this book. It's a really long book, it's almost a
thousand pages long and yeah at the time I didn't really enjoyed the introduction
either but as I kind of got to the middle section I realised how much more
exciting the introduction was um and yeah I really enjoyed the ending
as well. I liked how it kind of tied up the whole story and I loved being like
able to see what happened to all of the characters afterwards. However I did not
enjoy the middle section of this book. I kind of felt like the middle section of
this book was just filler and it was just kind of a way for all of these
characters to meet in the right place and I just thought that was really
boring um so yeah not my favorite in this series but I did enjoy it overall
because I absolutely loved the beginning and the ending so yeah.
And the third book that I read was Carrie by Stephen King and I read this for the Stephen
King book club that I run and yeah this was a reread for me. I've actually read
this book quite a few times and it's one of my favourites um there's not too much
to say about the fact of this book but I just love how this book is written
because it's not just telling the story um I should also say that it doesn't
have chapters either so it's just one long book and um..I say long book is
actually a relatively short book but it's just one long prose basically and
and it kind of has partly like paragraphs of the story and then it has
like paragraphs of like interviews done with people in the town and different
things like that and yeah I just, I absolutely love this book and one of the
things is that this book reminded me because I was talking about it with my
friend and it reminded me that I have not seen the film for this and I really
really want to so I really have to do that at some point.
So in my winter TBR I
mentioned that I wanted to read one Sherlock Holmes novel every single month
and one Agatha Christie novel every single month but sadly that that did not
happen because my library didn't have all of the Agatha Christie books that I
wanted to read and I had to kind of change my plan for that um so instead I
ended up reading to Sherlock Holmes novels in January or listening to and
that was the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and the Memoirs of Sherlock
Holmes and I say stories, they're actually short story collections both of
them. So I've been listening to a lot of short stories recently and yeah I think
like all short story collections there are going to be stories in there that
you really gel with and really love and there are going to be stories in there
that you don't get on with so much. However I think I preferred The
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as a collection because I felt like they were
really different and they weren't just so much about whodunit and they were
also contained like stories where Sherlock Holmes kind of failed and
didn't solve the case um I say didn't solve the case he's still did a fabulous
job but I don't know there wasn't that kind of automatic hero, it was kind of
like oh he did kind of get it wrong a little bit because he didn't have quite
all of the information. However I felt that the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes wasn't
as good because I found the story is really predictable and I was like
guessing what was going to happen before it actually happened and yeah I found
that a little bit annoying and a little bit boring as well because there was no
kind of twist or something to it um however it might just be that by the time
I got to the end of this collection I'd listened just so many short stories that
I was just fed up of short stories by that time.
And then the last book that I
read in the month of January was A Map of Days by Ransom Riggs and I buddy read
this with my friend Steve whose channel I shall link below and this was the book
that I decided would be my February pick for my catching up on series vlog thin.g
I'm not sure which order these videos are going to go up and whether that vlog
is gonna be up first or not so I won't go into too much detail on my thoughts
in now in this video because I don't want to repeat what I've already said
anyway but I will just say overall I really enjoyed this book and it was
lovely to delve back into the peculiar world and it was really lovely to see
peculiar America I was a little bit worried going in because I wasn't sure
whether I would love it as much because it's like the same characters but
different and I wasn't sure whether it was going to be too different but it
absolutely isn't it's different in all the right ways and I absolutely loved it.
So those are all the books that I managed to read in the month of January.
I'm really impressed with how much I managed to read in January. I wasn't
expecting to read as much as that but I'm really glad that I did and I hope I
can keep it up for the entire year but I probably won't be able to read as much
every single month but that's okay. Let me know down in the comment section what
your favourite book was that you read this month. I'd
love to know what you thought of it and recommend me some books if you think I
would enjoy it and yeah I hope you enjoyed this video and I shall see you
in my next one. Bye!
