My name is J Berry
and I am the manager of Instrument Services
at the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
I always wanted to work at Interlochen.
I was a camper for five summers.
I started in 1980
and I was food service.
Did that for three summers, and then
I worked as a practice supervisor,
and that was fun, I did that for seven summers,
and interspersed among that,
I was also an assistant for the junior orchestra
and in the evenings, I was a boat spotter.
And then, I was working for Margaret Beery
who does tours now.
Then I was the coordinator of the practice supervisors.
And the third summer I did that,
Ed Downing called me in and said,
"Hey, do you want to work here full time?"
And I said, "Sure!"
So I became the coordinator of facilities
and instrument services, so here I am.
With instruments.
I got my dream job.
And it has been a blast.
An absolute blast. I've loved every minute of it.
I think this is the most fabulous place on earth.
The kids are phenomenal.
You get to go to all of the student concerts for free.
It's so fun to work here, because you
always have something to do.
And then the people that I work with,
my colleagues in the music department,
are extraordinary individuals.
And you can learn so much from them.
It's so much fun.
You meet people from all over the globe.
If you're just starting out in your career,
it's an absolutely fantastic place to network,
whether you're going into business, or you're going into music
or whatever it is you're going in to,
you can somebody here that can further your career
and expand your horizons.
It's fantastic.
