North Korean leader Kim Jong-un unlikely to start a war to preserve his regime: CBS News - Duration: 0:41.

Despite rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula,... many experts believe North Korean leader Kim

Jong-un is unlikely to start a war he cannot win.

CBS News, citing various pundits,... says Kim's number one priority is the survival

of his regime,... despite behavior that could be seen as reckless and irrational.

Although Pyongyang may have acquired the ability to devastate an American city with a nuclear-tipped

ICBM,... it's seen as having no ability to destroy the U.S. outright.

Still, many fear the chances of a nuclear exchange are at the highest point since the

Cuban Missile Crisis,... more than half-a-century ago.

North Korean hackers attempt to steal Bitcoin from South Korea - Duration: 1:51.

South Korean police have concluded that North Korea was behind recent attempts to hack South

Korea's virtual money exchanges.

Local officials also say the nature of North Korea's cyberattacks are changing,... as the

cash-strapped regime targets cryptocurrency like Bitcoins to obtain funds.

Kim Hyo-sun reports.

North Korean hackers targeted at least four Bitcoin exchanges in South Korea earlier this

year in a bid to steal the digital currency.

South Korea's cyber police said Wednesday that North Korean hackers sent emails that

appeared innocuous, but contained malicious software applications.

In ten e-mails that were sent to 25 workers at four different Bitcoin exchanges, the hackers

disguised themselves as South Korean officials from public institutions, such as the police,

prosecution or Seoul City Government.

While no damages were reported,... there's speculation the cash-strapped regime, which

is heavily sanctioned by the UN,... is increasingly turning to digital currency to obtain funds.

(KOREAN) "North Korea's cyberattacks used to be aimed

at seizing private information or causing social strife in South Korea.

The attacks are now aimed at extorting money."

Last year, North Korea stole the personal data of more than ten million customers from

South Korea's Interpark,... an online auction and shopping site,... and held it for ransom

in exchange for nearly two-point-six million U.S. dollars in Bitcoin.

And a report released earlier this week by lawmaker Shim Jae-chul of the main opposition

Liberty Korea Party showed North Korea attempted to hack South Korea's central bank on multiple

occasions this year as well.

President Moon, party leaders discuss security issues - Duration: 3:01.

Staying at the top office,...

President Moon sat down with leaders of the country's rival political parties on Wednesday

evening at the presidential office.

Given the heightened tensions on the peninsula,... security issues and ways to deal with an increasingly

aggressive North Korea topped the agenda..

Hwang Hojun reports.

It was the third time President Moon and the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties

have gotten together at the Blue House.

This time around, the main focus of the meeting was national security.

(KOREAN) "As you are all aware of, our state of security

is very serious.

I'm worried that our national peace may be jeopardized and the safety of our people threatened

due to external conditions that we cannot control."

( . .)

The leaders who attended the dinner meeting with the president were Choo Mi-ae of the

ruling Democratic Party, Ahn Cheol-soo of the People's Party, acting leader and floor

leader of the Bareun Party Joo Ho-young, and Lee Jeong-mi of the Justice Party.

However, the leader of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party, Hong Joon-pyo, was a

no-show, rejecting the Presidential Office's invitation to the gathering.

President Moon urged the political leaders for cooperation in dealing with North Korea's

continuous provocations,... calling the current situation an urgent task to resolve in order

to ensure the nation's peace and economic growth.

Since President Moon took office in May, his administration saw a number of provocations

by Pyongyang -- eleven in total, including the regime's sixth nuclear test earlier this

month.

And in the spirit of bipartisanship, President Moon renewed his proposal to form a permanent

three-way consultation body,... that would include the government and the ruling and

opposition parties, and which will aim at taking on those issues

(KOREAN) "To make political cooperation a reality,

which is what people want and what we have promised, I look forward to quickly forming

the permanent consultation body in order to discuss security issues together within that

frame."

( )

President Moon's remarks come as the conservative parties have lambasted Moon for sticking with

the "dialogue with North Korea" narrative.

Also, the opposition and the presidential office already had some difficulties seeing

eye to eye on President Moon's picks for high governmental positions.

(STAND UP) Wednesday's meeting was initially proposed

by President Moon soon after he came back home from New York, where he made his debut

at the 72nd UN General Assembly.

And since he got back, President Moon has continued to stress bipartisan effort and

cooperation to put an end to North Korea's nuclear issues fundamentally and peacefully,

… just like the international community is doing now.

South Korea to launch nationwide discount shopping event - Duration: 1:00.

If you are watching us in Korea,... it's time to grab your wallets as some of the best deals

of the year are going on offer today....

An annual nationwide shopping festival begins on this Thursday... and will run through October

31st,... so you'll have more than a month to check out the bargains.

Sponsored by the government,... the "Korea Sale Festa," joins hands with some 350 retailers

offering discounts of up to 80 percent.

The event was initially set up to boost domestic consumption and the overall economy,... and

looking at last year's figure alone,... the event caused a zero-point-1-3 percentage point

jump in fourth quarter GDP.

The government hopes this year's event will be as successful,... if not more,... given

that it's being held for its longest period yet.

But watchers have expressed concerns there won't be many shoppers around,... as many

Koreans are likely to travel abroad during the ten-day-long Chuseok holiday that begins

this weekend.

President Moon Jae-in vows peace in South Korea, North Korea relations - Duration: 2:10.

And on the same day,...

President Moon Jae-in has sent the world another message on improving inter-Korean relations.

He told the Korean people that Seoul will take all necessary measures to bring a lasting

peace to the Korean Peninsula.

Our chief Blue House correspondent Moon Connyoung reports.

The darkest hour of all is just before the break of dawn... said South Korean President

Moon Jae-in as he acknowledged the critical situation vis-a-vis North Korea and reassured

that despite all there will eventually be peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

(Korean) "No matter how difficult the relationship

between the two Koreas, the new administration will not hesitate in supporting various reunification

projects initiated by the National Unification Advisory Council."

.

Speaking to leaders of the presidential advisory council at the presidential Blue House on

Wednesday, the new South Korean leader urged...

(Korean) "I ask all of you to be our pioneers.

Peace is not given to us.

It's made by us."

. . .

Chaired by the South Korean president himself, the council, established in 1981, boasts 19-thousand

members from over 120 countries and offers the president policy advice on reunification

of the two Koreas.

( ) That message was echoed by Mr. Moon earlier

in the day as he made a speech before a group of overseas Koreans representing South Korean

communities abroad.

He noted the increasing tensions in and around the Korean peninsula and vowed that their

home country is doing its best to fundamentally resolve North Korea's nuclear issue.

(Korean) "The path we should take is one toward peace.

It's a difficult path but it is one that the Republic of Korea must take, therefore, we

shall wisely overcome any obstacles and carry on."

. .

The South Korean president then put on his honorary ambassador cap.

(Korean) "In that sense, the PyeongChang Winter Olympics

in February next year is a crucial opportunity for us to bring peace on the Korean Peninsula."

Volcano spews rock, dumps ash near Mexico City - Duration: 0:41.

Mexico is still reeling from a recent deadly earthquake, but now it has to deal with an

active volcano.

On Wednesday, the Popocatepetl volcano outside Mexico City spewed flaming rocks to distances

of up to one kilometer and dumped ash over nearby towns.

Eruptions and exhalations take place on average about twice a year since the volcano reactivated

23 years ago and are not seen by disaster officials as a major threat.

But the activity has worried Mexicans following last week's 7.1 magnitude quake, but the country's

national disaster-prevention agency says the eruption is not related to the tremor.
