Youtube daily report Feb 10 2018

Usually reviewers make close up video before they making face video. My close up video is done at the moment and i want to tell you - to understand and show this chip i spend more time, than i spend on DNA chip

Asmodus try hard to make this chip

I'm almost done but i want to wish Lex good luck and patience(because he's gonna need it while making subtitles for this video)

Okay folks, without further delays let's roll. Intro...

Hopochki HEY

Hello everyone! Alex from VapersMD is here

And i'm glad to welcome you on my channel

Today our guest is Lustro 200w by Asmodus

LampO, KrevetkO

Yes Misha, LustrO

This regulated box mod is made by Asmodus who's made many great box mods in past that is liked by many vapers

Parilshikam(same vapers but with different context - don't ask), ex-smokers, people who uses personal vape devices, Personal Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems users

Okay, let's stop laugh at definitions of this word and let's talk about this device - the chip in here is very interesting, there is also touch-screen

And a lot of other features that this chip can provide which i will demonstrate to you in close up

Also this box mod supports firmware upgrade and powered by 2*18650 and it have LED backlight and it have F%#&&G flashlight

Close up is gonna be interesting

Let's roll

Okay folks, it's time to unbox this Lustro

Here we have transparent package, on the sides we have name, logos, it also says 21+, scratch-code

On the rear we have description of a features and specs, link to the official site, warnings, kit content and BIG logo of Asmodus

Under the cover we have box mod itself

And under the foam we have User Manual, Warranty Card and Battery Safety guide

By the way under the battery door, inside the 18650 slots we have USB - Type C cable which is required for charging and firmware upgrade

Now let's talk about specs of this device

This mod is made of zinc alloy and available in 2 color options - painting and soft-touch covering with different color palettes

Mod is driven by the Asmodus' chip GX200HUTC which gives 200W of power and supports all the modes that is actual to this date

The lower ohm limit is at 0.08ohm, though manufacturer claims it's 0.1ohm

Besides all the features i will show you later on this mod also have infrared sensor for gesture control. Also it have flashlight and LED backlight

This mod is powered by 2*18650 and can be charged via Type C with 0.5A current

It's time for detailed overview and as always we start from the top and in order

At the top we have metal connector with metal spring-loaded pin

I think you noticed that one edge is not like all others but that's due to LED backlight

If we look closer on the connector we will see that it's a bit protruding. That's made to prevent top part being damaged or scratching

This is control panel. It have Fire button with LED backlight, touch screen and Type C slot

Also we have white stripe - it have LED inside

This side is empty - we can only see part of battery door

Here we have actual battery door with vent holes in it and it also have Asmodus logo

This side is identical to other side

At the bottom we have 2 LED lights flashlight, vent holes and certificates

Now it's time to talk about battery door. Pay attention - there is 2 big gaps - at the top and at the bottom, that's sad.

Battery door sits tight and have no play which is good.

That battery door is hold by 4 magnets - 2 at the cover and 2 at the main body

Inside we see a slots for 2*18650 batteries with stickers which shows the correct way to install them

They have a notice that we need to Push up a bit to insert the batteries because contacts is spring-loaded on both sides

Also they show the correct polarity

In here we have warranty seal

And we have a ribbon for convenient extraction of the batteries

Let's install the batteries, first goes negative DOWN

Second goes negative UP.

Push a little and we're done with installation

After this done click the battery door in place and this mod is ready to work. And we're ready to continue

To turn On this mod you need to hit Fire button 5 times

Raz, dva, tri, chetire, pyat'(1-2-3-4-5)

And instantly we have important notice appeared on the screen

It asking if our batteries is "married" - this side we have Yes, this side No

Sadly you won't be able to see it because of camera

If you press No the mod will turn off and won't turn on again no matter how many times you hit Fire button

That's why we need to re-install the batteries

One two three four five

Tap yes and the mod is loading

On the screen we have following information - mode, voltage, resistance, you can say speedometer, adjustable wattage, battery life, Preheat option

Indication of Infrared sensor(is it on or off) and lock indication which shows is your mod locked or unlocked

First thing we can do is to unlock the screen - it can be unlocked in two ways - either swipe down or tap on the screen three times(but this option is within the menu)

After you unlock you see the open lock on the screen

Of course we can swipe between mods like so - here we have TC

Here's the Curve mode - in here you can adjust you wattage/time curve

TCR mode and TFR mode

And Power mode

Here we have a speedometer - if we click on it on the bottom it will change value 10W - now it showing us either time of the draw or your current wattage

You can also adjust your wattage - click on the wattage and you will get the menu like this - it have + and - buttons

You can adjust the wattage with 0.1 increments. If you tap and hold adjustment will switch to turbo mode

To apply just hit Fire Button

Next thing we can do - adjust the Preheat.

At the moment its set on Hard and if we swipe up we can choose Slow

Or Normal

Or get back to Hard

In TC mode we can adjust the information that speedometer displays

Also we can change between wattage and temp limit

If we just tap it will change and if we tap and hold it will give us option to adjust the value

If we tap and hold on the name of the mode, in this case TC - it will give us to select the wire we're using

Next mode - Curve. If we tap and hold on those zeros we are get into adjustment menu

On the left we adjust wattage, on the right side we can adjust time

If we swipe up with unlocked screen we can change Presets between P1, P2, P3, P4

Next is TCR mode. This mode is for fine tuning of TC.

Again this is switching between temp limit and wattage

If we tap and hold on TCR it will allow us to adjust it

Also we have Memory - M1, M2, M3 and so on

Next mode is TFR - it adjusts almost as TCR

At the moment we have the screen locked and this isn't all the features with locked screen i can show

If we swipe down we will unlock it, but if we swipe up it will lead us to menu, where we can turn On and Off infrared scanner and Flashlight

Upper button is for Infrared scanner. Right now it's off. Let's turn it On and i will demonstrate how it works

To make it work we need to unlock the screen and now you can just swipe between the modes

In both directions

Also you can select your Presets by swiping Up and Down accordingly

Next is the Flashlight. Tap on that button and we get the picture of the flashlight on the screen

Now we can adjust the Flashlight which is on the bottom. Tap once and it will turn On 1st LED, tap second time and the 2nd LED will light up.

I can't say it's very bright, but it gives enough light.

And like so we turn it Off

If your Flashlight is On and you press the Fire button it will automatically turn Off and you will get to the main screen

Folks, I have not finished yet

We have another Menu and we can get there by pressing Fire button 5 times

1-2-3-4-5

Here's the Menu button.

You can turn Off the device

Swipe to the left lead us to next tab which is Day Puff limit.

I have to turn off the lights because otherwise you won't be able to see s$&t.

Next tab will reset your Puff counter

In here you can select the design of the speedometer - Real or Fun. I didn't get the difference. Whatever.

Next - Firmware upgrade. When you tap it will ask if you want to upgrade. Tap Yes and i will show you what's gonna happen next but a bit later

Next is Firmware Info and chip version info.

Next tab is LED backlight adjustment. It allow you to adjust the speed of it. There is several modes - Fast, Slow, Medium

Next tab is for turning this LED On and Off. And the fact that you can turn it Off is good.

In here you can select LED color from Red, Blue, Green. But we will stay on Red.

Next tab is Lock - in here you can adjust how you will lock and unlock this device. You can do it by the Slide or Click. To unlock it with Click you have to click 3 times. Let's set Click.

Next tab is for Screen Active time. Right now it's set on 10 seconds, you can lower it down to 3 seconds or raise it up to 60 seconds

Next tab is for resistance lock. You can do it manually, though this mod do it automatically. But you can adjust it to certain value if you know your resistance for sure.

And we got back to Power On/Off tab

Aside from that if you click on Fire button 3 times

1-2-3

Then we will do System Lock - in this mode whatever you click or press - the mod will not react.

Raz dva tri

Unlocked. Now it's functional.

Regarding screen lock - we set the Click-type. For example if we tap the screen says Click screen 3x to unlock.

One, two, three. Raz, dva, tri. 1-2-3. Four, five.

One, two, threeee~

VOT

Unlocked. That's why i like Slide method more.

Let's get back to Power Mode and let's see how's this LED works

To make it happen we need to screw down atomizer and we're ready to test

When i press Fire button sort of wave or level, i don't know how to call it, going on

Fire button have LED backlight as well

As i said we can select different colors - Blue, Green and Red or turn it off completely.

V celom(C pronounced as TS)

Okay friends, this is all regarding features of this mod

Let's see how this box mod fit bigger atomizers

For example - Gorgon RDCA which is 26mm in diameter fits great with no overhangs, though it's maximum what this mod can fit.

Size-wise Lustro is looks like so when compared to other box mods that is also powered by 2*18650

As you can see it's average

Another important information - once you plugged the cable to charge your mod it will not fire. There is no pass-through option in here

One great thing about Type C - no matter how you plug the cable - the charge will go anyway

That was all i could tell you about features, now it's time to show you how Firmware upgrade works

To do so we need to go to my PC. Let's roll.

First thing we should do - go to the Asmodus official site - asmodus.com

Next - Support, Downloads

Scroll down and find Lustro

It's already 2 versions of firmware - 2.2 and 2.3. I recommend to install 2.2 and then 2.3

But first we need to download Updater Program

Click and download. And then download both firmwares

As you can see i already done that step so let's go to the firmware upgrade

Updater Program is lay in archive so you need to unpack only this file

Next click on it and the Updater will open

Now we need to plug in the mod to the PC. To do so let's go to the menu and select Firmware Upgrade

Box mod will ask if you want to Upgrade. Once you press Yes you need to hold Fire Button. Now we have a Download Mode line

Now you can plug in the Type C and press Connect button in the Updater Program. This button change the color to green - it means everything goes correctly

Next click File and select version 2.2. I already did that so i install 2.3

After this done click Upgrade and wait till it's done

Upgrade complete - self-explanatory

Box mod automatically disconnects and reboot

Remove the cable and turn the box mod On

Click Yes on Married batteries and now our box mod has firmware upgraded

Okay friends, that's all i could tell you in this close up

Let's go back to the face-time and speak of its pros and cons

Thanks for your attention in this close up and on my PC desktop

Let's roll

On top i have atomizer by Asmodus named...

.............................................................oO

I forgot the name. ZESTHIA

We're not gonna speak about this RTA, we are gonna speak about this box mod and as always we start with cons

First con goes from my inner perfectionist - pay attention - all control elements is not centered due to the angle with LED stripe is shifted

Because of that all control elements went offcenter to the right

My inner perfectionist is pissed off. I look at this mod and i see asymmetry. For example - atomizers sits in center and Fire button is positioned to the right or left - whatever you like

Me personal con for asymmetry

Next con goes for laggy touch screen. I think you noticed it - sometimes it works not as it should. Especially it's noticeable when you try to unlock the screen with 3x clicks

My point is - the control icons is very small and sometimes it's hard to get on them with your big fingers. Maybe that's why it lag

It's possible that it works fine - but not with ordinary human fingers

And last con i'll give for those gaps between main body and battery door

Yes, even though the battery door sits good there is gaps and it's a con

Nitpicking

I have only one nitpick - this box mod is overfilled with features.

Yes, it's cool, but on the other hand this whole functional is in box mod itself. Someone would say it's great and convenient that you don't have to plug it to PC and connect with software

BUT. You won't be using 80% of this features on daily basis and i guess it's more convenient to make all adjustments once in software and just use it with the features you actually need

That's why it's very easy to get lost in menu of this box mod. You can swipe in all directions, do random taps. Too many things and huge menu can get you confused

Some of beginners may even get scared by this huge functional. That's why i think that some features should be in software

Let's talk pros now

First pro i'll give for the chip with many features. The chip is great, i like how it works in Power Mode

There is almost no delay on Fire button.

Besides this mod have huge functional with many features some of them you may not even need

One of those unnecessary features is Flashlight. C'mon guys, everyone have cell phone. Every cell phone have Flashlight. Flashlight feature in here is unnecessary

But there is some really cool features like firmware upgrade and option to turn the LED Off. It's very bright.

Next pro i'll give for fitting large diameter atomizers - up to 26mm. And it's good.

Another pro goes for soft-touch coating. When you hold this mod it feels like something rubberized. Some of you might like it, some of you will not, but it's convenient and comfortable. That's why i give a pro for coating.

Another pro i'll give for solid battery door. It have no play and sits firmly. Good battery door - major pro

And last pro i'll give to this box mod for how its built. It feels like a monolith piece with no rattle etc. I will give props for that - it will make using of this mod more comfortable

The price on the official site is 79.95$

If you will look at all features - this is good price for this mod.

If you are geek and you want the box mod that can do everything and have a Flashlight - i think it's worth the money. And it's have pretty compact size as well.

Of course you can leave a comment with your opinion regarding the price - it will be interesting to read

Overall folks

recette DESSERT DE SAINT VALENTIN / Valentin's day entremet (EN subs) - Duration: 16:19.

I everyone ! I'm happy to get back to you day after this long time, I'm sorry

after 6 years mu computer crashed so I had to get a new one

I took the time to choose a good one I today I'm back

just before Valentin's day to propose my tutorial that I planned few days ago

it's still time

it's a Valentin's day entremet

made of a vanilla biscuit

a violet flavored crunchy layer

a blackcurrant jam layer and a violet mousse

all that covered with a red/ white and purple mirror glaze

and a rose petal with some chocolate as a decoration

I lost enough time with this computer issues, I pull on my apron and let's start the recipe

I first make the blackcurrant jam layer because it has to be stored in the freezer few hours before assembly. You'll need these ingredients

30 g of sugar

4 g of gelatin

200 g of blackcurrant puree

I start by putting the gelatin into a glass of cold water

I cut it to make it easy

and I put them in the water

while the gelatin is in the water I drop the puree in a sauce pan and I bring it to the boil

I add the sugar

I bring to the boil

when it's boiling I add the gelatin that I squeeze between my fingers to remove excess water

once it's combined I let it cool down before pouring it in the heart shaped cutter

that I set on a mat over a chopping board

after this resting time I drop the puree into the heart

and I put it into the freezer until assembly

once the jam layer is in the freezer I make the vanilla cake with these ingredients

85 g of almond powder

65 + 10 g of cane sugar

20 + 90 g of egg whithes

35 g of egg yolks

5 g of vanilla powder

20 g of 30% heavy cream

15 g of sugar

a pinch of salt

70 g of unsalted butter

35 g of flour

2 g of baking powder

I drop in my mixer the almond powder

vanilla

big amount of cane sugar

small amount of egg white

egg yolks

cream

pinch of salt

baking powder

sugar

and the melted butter

I work it with K-beater

when the batter is combined I drop it in a bowl

and I then whisk the big amount of egg whites with the small amount of cane sugar

My bowl is clean, I drop the egg whites

I whisk it and I add the sugar little by little

when the whites are thick

I can add them to the previous batter

I add first a spatula to soften the batter a bit

I then sieve the flour over the batter

I combine

I finish bay add the rest of the egg whites gently with my spatula

once it's well combined I can pour the batter in a 20 cm tart circle

so I can cut a heat in it

I bake it at 170 °C for 15 min

after 15 min the cake is baked I let it cool down until assembly

while the cake is cooling down I make the violet flavored crunchy layer with these ingredients

45 g of 40% milk chocolate

115 g of homemade parline, you can find the tutorial on my channel

50 g of dried pancakes

30 g of puffed rice

and some drops of violet flavor

I first melt the chocolate with the microwave at low power

when it's melted I add the praline paste

I add then few drops of violet flavor

3 of 4

I finish by adding the dried pancakes and puffed rice

once it's well combined I drop it over a baking paper

and I roll it out into 0,5 cm thickness

make sure it's large enough to cut the small heart

I store it into the fridge util assembly

to finish, just before starting the assembly I make the violet mousse

60 g of unskimmed milk

230 g of 30% heavy cream

40 g of sugar

215 g of 34% white chocolate

3 g of gelatin

and violet flavor

I first put the gelatin into a glass of cold water

I then melt the chocolate in the microwave at low power

when it's melted I leave it aside

I bring to the boil the milk with the sugar

I bring it to the boil

when the milk is boiling I add the gelatin that I squeeze between my fingers

I combine

I then drop the milk in 3 time over the melted chocolate

I pour a first third

once it's combined I'm gonna whisk the cream to get a whipped cream that I'll add to the chocolate and milk mix

I drop the cold cream in the mixer and I whisk it until I get a whipped cream

when I get a whipped cream I add it to the previous batter

when It reaches 40°C max

I check the temperature

it is at 37°C so I can add the whipped cream

I add some violet flavor drops

approx 4-5 drops

and I combine it gently

when I get a beautiful violet flavored mousse, I pour it in a piping bag with a round tip and I store it into the fridge until assembly

fridge

now that all the elements to make my entremet are done I can start the assembly

I first cut the vanilla cake

it is too thick for me so I remove a layer

I keep 1 cm of thickness

you can keep the excess for breakfast

I then cut the small heart inside

once it's cut I leave it aside

and I cope with the violet flavored crunchy layer

and in the same way I cut it

and I can place it over the cake

I have now the cake and the crunchy layer

I can take out the blackcurrant jam layer and the violet flavored mousse

I start by piping the mousse inside the heart shaped mould

and then I'll set the blackcurrant layer

I center it

press a little to make the cream go over

I pipe again

I set the crunchy

I press as well

and to finish, the cake

and I press to make the cream reach the to of the edges

I remove the excess all around with a spoon

Former Manchester United midfielder Liam Miller has died aged 36 - Duration: 2:02.

Player won 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland and scored one goal for his country.

Liam Miller, the former Manchester United and Celtic midfielder, has died aged 36 following

a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

It was revealed in November that Miller, who won 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland and

scored one goal for his country, had been diagnosed with the disease.

The Cork-born player joined Celtic aged 16, and made 15 appearances for the club before

moving to Manchester United.

He struggled to hold down a place in Sir Alex Ferguson's team, eventually moving to Sunderland

before spells at Queens Park Rangers and Hibernian.

He also played in Australia and the United States, and returned to his hometown to represent

Cork City late in his career.

The news provoked an outpouring of affection for the popular player with former clubs,

team-mates and fans paying tribute to Miller, and sending messages of condolence to his

wife and three children.

Kevin Kilbane tweeted: "Sad hearing the awful news that Liam Miller has passed away

this evening, taken far so soon by a terrible disease.

Proud to have shared a dressing room with him over the years.

Liam Miller."

Kevin Doyle, the Republic of Ireland striker, wrote: "Extremely sad news, rest in peace

Liam Miller, a gentleman."

The fellow former Hibs player turned commentator Tam McManus tweeted: "Think you can see

the esteem that Liam Miller was held in by supporters of every club, he either played

for or against with the tributes to him tonight.

Such a wonderfully talented player but more importantly a lovely, humble person who never

changed despite the wealth and success."

MBH 13 : Quand on arrête de juger - Duration: 10:25.

Hi and welcome to another episode of

Messages from a Bilingual Heart.

A little podcast I've created

in order to help me open my heart,

to let everything I want to say come out

without planning,

without thinking too much,

without speaking from the ego.

And really

just saying what my heart wants to say.

Practicing my communication skills

both in English and French.

It's a project that's really for me,

but I figure, if the message I find in my heart

inspires someone else to do the same thing,

to reconnect with themselves as well,

that that would bring me a lot of joy too.

By being really vulnerable like this,

just saying anything and everything,

personal things, things that really touch me,

that hurt me or that bring me joy...

Just finding that authenticity,

that real me,

and putting a piece of it out in the world.

Becoming more visible.

As terrifying as that is,

I know that

it's the kind of world I want to live in

and if I can manage to do it

then it can perhaps inspire others to do it too.

To find that authentic part of themselves too...

And the more people reconnect with that,

the more this will be the kind of world I want to live in.

So that's why I'm doing this.

I admit that these past few months

I've put this project aside.

I was really unsatisfied with the last episode I recorded,

but I want to restart because I know that

I really need to work on communication.

Finding the words to express

what I really feel.

To communicate less violently...

more in line with my values

and what I want to see and create in the world.

I recognize that it's something we can work on

and that I need to put in that work.

So yes, that's why I'm here right now

recording once again.

I found the courage to share

this little project with a couple people.

I wasn't really expecting to do that,

but anyway someone listened

and encouraged me,

so I feel encouraged to get back to it.

So many things have happened

since the last time I recorded.

I've had so many revelations,

I've seen so many things.

I've come back to my country of origin,

to Canada,

and I've spent a lot of time with my family.

I believe was finally able to be,

anyway, I tried to be what I wanted to find in them.

What I've always wanted to find in my family,

with my friends, with people here,

was this presence.

This authenticity.

This courage to face our fears.

To talk about REAL things

in a way that...

I used to try, but it came out in a frustrated way.

It came out violently,

from a place of judgement.

I think that what happened this summer was

that I was able to stop judging people

and my family

and I was able to express something,

a deep desire to have more from them.

I wanted them to present,

but I wasn't even able to be present.

So I think this summer was the first time

I was able to do that.

To accept people, the place,

even the country itself,

accept everything as it is.

To not want to try to change things.

It was pretty intense...

a really dramatic shift.

It really changed everything.

I was there. I accepted.

I didn't want things to be a certain way,

to changes things.

I tried not to plan things too much.

Because I see that the desire to plan everything

comes from a place of fear in me.

To try to see everyone,

to plan gatherings...

It's too much and trying to do it all stresses me out.

So I really tried to go with the flow

and it went well.

It went really well.

I really connected with the people

I really wanted to connect with.

It was a beautiful gift.

It was hard, not easy.

There were many tears,

many things I didn't want to see in myself.

In my relationships.

In my mariage.

I see there are a lot things to work through.

Even this week, there were times where

I didn't even want to go back to France.

I told myself it's easier here.

I have everything I want here now.

I see that.

Why would I go back to France

when I've finally found what I've been looking for

here in Canada.

I'm scared to go back to France

because I'm confronted with a lot of things there

that I don't want to see.

Like...

Well, yes there's this question of language

but that also links to a question of confidence.

I often feel like

people don't know me,

they don't know I'm bilingual.

So they judge me.

And if only they knew that I also speak English...

but that's just...

I have nothing to prove.

I don't need people to know that.

If I know it, that should be enough.

And I just want

to accept that in myself

and to just take back my power

and just know who I am

and be confident with that.

Continue on my path.

And I think I can.

In returning to France I'm starting a new chapter,

and I know that.

It will be another chapter for me.

For my partner as well.

We're diving into what we went there to do,

in creating this transition,

in creating this new life together.

In going to France

we wanted to get out of our old habits.

To see the things we were ignoring.

The things we didn't want to see.

Burst this bubble of comfort

we were in.

We were so in our own world.

We wanted to force ourselves to get out of it.

Even in knowing that,

we were still afraid.

And we still are.

But it'll bring us further.

And we both know that.

So when we're able to get past this

and to know that it's okay,

we see the things we need to work on more and more.

Even things we had never considered before.

I'm really optimistic.

As hard as it is,

things are going in the right direction.

It won't be easy.

I'm in a new family in France.

A family that forces me to

face some of my biggest fears

in terms of self-confidence.

If I manage to face that challenge

in my new family

then I'll be able to do it anywhere.

Because it really scares me.

It really blocks me.

So if I can get passed this,

if I can face this,

then I'll be able to go a lot further.

I think I can do it.

I see that despite the fact that

there are a lot of things in France

that I don't want to see,

there are a lot of things that scare me,

there are also some people there

who are really THERE for me

in a way I really needed too.

And that is the nicest gift.

I'm facing fears and at the same time

I have the other side

I have an enormous amount of support.

I see it now.

You have to see it and appreciate it.

I see that

there's a lot of possibility.

So tomorrow I go back to France for another chapter.

I think that

there are a lot of beautiful things coming.

I don't know what exactly.

And I'm not saying it'll be easy,

but it'll be great.

I did a great job this summer.

I see it for what it is.

I see I have a beautiful family.

That I come from a beautiful place.

That there's beauty everywhere.

I was just so frustrated,

I was judging everything so much

that I didn't see it.

But it's all good, I'm getting passed that.

We'll see what comes next.

I'm going to get back to work.

I'm going to look for a job

and start working on projects that truly interest me

and I think I'll have support over there

to help me that

and to keep moving forward.

On that,

Thanks for listening.

Wishing you a lovely day!

Until next time!

【Language Diary #1】 Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking - the most important skill is...? - Duration: 11:48.

Hello, good day everyone, 大家好, and welcome to the first ever episode of Language Diary.

In this series, (sorry I should look at the camera, I always forget, because I feel that

if I'm looking at myself in the video [on-screen], I'm looking at the camera - as you can see

I don't do this a lot, so please forgive me if I seem like a complete amateur).

So in this series, I'm just going to be talking about some of my thoughts regarding

the language learning process, and perhaps to share a couple what I'm doing with my

own languages, so hopefully that's something that's both interesting, and hopefully somewhat

informative to you guys.

So today's topic would be, as you can see with the title of the video, out of the four

skills of language learning, so there's reading, writing, listening and speaking,

and out of those four skills, which is the most important one?

So, my answer's gonna be two-pronged.

I'm not going to say "all the skills are equally are as important", because I don't

think they're necessarily equally as important.

So I actually do have one answer.

In my personal opinion, I think that the most important skill, without a single hint of

a doubt, has to be listening.

And listening is so important because when you're able to understand (excuse me, I

have a bit of a cough!), when you're able to understand a language, that's when you

start to feel you've unlocked your potential to that language, you've unlocked the "secret

door" that allows you to access so much more in the language.

That's reason number one, when you can understand what you hear around you, you can learn so

much faster.

Number two, the vocabulary and structures you pick up through listening instead of through

reading, they're going to stick a lot longer, they're going to be a lot stickier than

learning through reading because if you listen to something and comprehend something, it's

going to be comprehension that's contextual, and it's also going to be comprehension

that's intuitive, so you understand it at a very deep, intuitive level that's close

to how a native speaker would understand it.

Whereas if you're reading something and you understand a word or a structure, it might

not be as close to that core of understanding.

That would be the reasons, to me, for placing such a strong emphasis on listening.

And, also I feel that it's very important because listening is probably the most understated

and underestimated skill of all the four skills, and I feel that it deserves so much more attention

and care when it comes to language learning.

So those are my reasons for thinking that listening is the most important.

And so, how exactly should we listen?

To be more specific, I've written down seven "stages" I think we go through when listening.

So, I'd love to share those with you, and perhaps you can see if that makes sense, and

if that resonates with what you're doing to train up your listening.

Stage 0 would be in the beginning, when a foreign language to you sounds like just a

bunch of sounds, it doesn't sound like anything, it doesn't have any meaning, it's just

random sounds.

Hopefully the next level up, stage 1, would be that you're able to distinguish the individual

sounds of each word, and you can start to say, "hey you know what, this isn't just

a bunch of sounds I'm hearing, there's actually language, this is actually a foreign

language and I can start to hear these sounds belong to that language."

So you have an awareness of the sounds in that language.

So that's stage 1.

Stage 2 is when you're, on top of being able to say that "those are actually sounds

in that language", you can say, "hey I can actually catch a couple of words, in terms

of what I just heard, I can effectively grab a couple of words and start understanding

a little bit of what people are saying."

So in other words, you're able to start establishing word boundaries, so what separates

one word from another.

And so, the next step up is when you're really able to take that to a fairly high

level, and so you're able to establish word boundaries to the extent where you can probably

transcribe everything, or close to everything, that a person says, on paper in at most two

listens (which I think is reasonable in most cases that mirrors how native speakers listen

as well).

And so, at that stage you're able to listen, you're really good at mapping what you hear

(in terms of sounds), to how words are spelt, to words you've learned, or even words you

haven't learned, as an extended bonus.

And that ability's going to be crucial to developing your listening comprehension later

on.

Because there are two parts of it, aren't there?

One would be listening, in terms of being able to convert the sounds that you hear into

words that you know, or don't know.

And then the other part would be to translate the words that you have down there, into an

understanding, into comprehension, into understanding what's going on.

So, one level up from that, stage 4, is where you're able to, on top of having a very

high level of dictation ability, you're able to single out important keywords in what

people listen to, so you can really start establishing the main context, and the main

gist of what people talk about when listening to an extended speech or something like that,

or a clip, like a YouTuber talking or something like that.

After that, one level up from that, would be stage 5, I believe, where you're able

to not only understand, pick up keywords and build up your understanding from there, you're

able to pick up key phrases, like collocations, fixed phrases, or just longer phrases and

build up your comprehension from there.

You have a more well-rounded and comprehensive kind of understanding of what you're listening

to.

And one level up from that would be, at that point, you're pretty much, your comprehension

is really just spot-on.

And at stage 6, you're probably able to understand everything that you hear.

That's such a godsend, to be able to do that.

But obviously, it's not [a] godsend because you've put in so much effort to be able

to do that through listening, through reading, and all the other skills.

As a matter of fact, I feel like all the other skills you do in order to ramp up your listening,

which in turn, strengthens the other pillars of your skills.

And that's how important I feel listening is.

And at that point, you're pretty much able to understand everything you hear, but let

me be clear, in topics you're interested in and that you've actually studied before.

In areas that you haven't listened to, your comprehension would be a little lower.

But that's fine, even for native speakers, if they listen to something they're unfamiliar

with, their comprehension goes down, that's perfectly normal.

And so, last but not least, you've got the ultimate stage, the seventh stage, which I

take it to interpret as the ability to distinguish the subtlest of nuances when listening.

You're able to pick up things like double entendre, double meaning, metaphors, or maybe

even sarcasm.

You're able to not just understand things at a surface level, you're able to understand

highly figurative language, and fairly quickly as well, given how fast a lot of languages

are, especially in comparison to English.

This is why I feel like why English speakers have a lot of trouble understanding other

languages, just because they're so much faster than English.

I think virtually every single language on this planet is faster than English.

So that would be my answer to that question.

The second prong of my answer to that question is that, after listening, the skill that's

most important to you really depends, I think, on what your goals are and where you're

at.

For example, if you're like me, and you don't have a lot of opportunities to actually

use the languages you're studying, perhaps, I feel, writing would be a really good way

to fill in that void, because you're going to have an opportunity to strengthen and reinforce

vocabulary that you might not have a lot of opportunities to use.

Or you can practise monologuing with yourself,

Or you might decide you feel that speaking is important, if you do have the opportunity

to speak, or you need to speak a lot because you're in that country, then speaking might

be your number one priority after that.

And, number three, reading could be something you might want to focus on, especially when

you're moving from a beginner's to an intermediate stage, and you really need to

get used to, and get comfortable in seeing that language, so that's something that

depends on where you're at, and what your goals are.

So that would be my two-pronged answer to the question, which skill is the most important

skill of the four skills.

Okay, so that is that.

And, I feel that at the end of each episode (if you can call it that), I also want to

share with you guys some exercises you can do, so you won't just be listening to me

ranting on about a topic, you're actually hopefully picking up something useful that

you can apply to your own language studies.

So today's exercise is going to be, I would like to challenge you to pick a clip, from

your favourite YouTuber, in a language you're learning, maybe a news clip or a drama clip,

depending on what you like.

For me, [for example], I pick news clips, because dramas and YouTubers are actually

very hard to understand.

But with news, the language is a lot more straightforward.

So pick one of your favourite clips, and try to transcribe maybe 30 seconds to one minute

of a section of that clip, of what you hear.

Listen to it again if you need to, to fill in the gaps that you might have left during

the first iteration.

This will essentially tell you how much you can listen to, how good your listening ability

is, and how well you can comprehend.

And that's my challenge for you today, and that's about it, in terms of time for today.

Thank you so much for tuning in, guys, start of the new series, I hope you guys will enjoy

the content to come, and I look forward to sharing more thoughts with you guys, and hopefully

my own forays into language learning.

Alright, that's it from me for now, and I will hopefully see you guys in a different

episode.

Thank you for watching, once again, and bye for now.
