Tuatara All The Way Down – Face To Face With A Living Fossil! - Duration: 8:37.
Hey guys!
Joe here.
I've been thinking a lot about change.
There's a saying: Nothing endures but change.
Of course there's an exception to every rule.
There are some living things on Earth that have been around a really long time and don't
seem to have changed much at all.
The Ginkgo tree, platypus, echidna, coelacanths, nautlius, horseshoe crabs… and of course:
the tuatara, the sole remaining member of a branch of reptiles that originated 200 million
years ago.
[OPEN]
And today I'm here at the Dallas Zoo, because I'm gonna meet one.
Let's go find a tuatara.
Hey!
Amber?
Nice to meet you.
Mice to meet you too!
So it's really just your job to hang out with awesome reptiles all day?
All day, every day!
We're here to see one special one.
One special one.
The tuatara.
Take me to the tuatara.
Real quick, some context: During the Project for Awesome livestream, John Green and I said
that if we hit a fundraising goal, he'd ride a tiny rocking horse…and I'd
make a tuatara video.
So here we are.
Joe is a man of his word.
Back to the zoo…
Tuatara?
Tuataaara?
So this is the legendary tuatara.
The plural of tuatara is tuatara.
And they look like lizards but they're not lizards, right?
Correct.
So, way back in time.
Tuatara and its lineage comes off here.
And these all become?
You have like lizards, snakes.
So they're a reptile but not a lizard?
Correct.
When the Gondwana supercontinent split apart beginning 180 million years ago, these lonely
survivors were isolated on islands that would one day become New Zealand, which probably
protected them from much competition until humans showed up around 700 years ago.
So millions of years ago there would have been a lot of reptiles like this around, but
now they're the only ones left?
All your friends are dead!
I'm so sorry.
They have very basal, primitive features that haven't changed in millions of years.
That's why people call these "living fossils"?
Living fossils!
We're gonna have to have a little talk about that word.
"Living fossil"…
I'm not a huge fan of that term.
For starters, it's an oxymoron.
Fossils are dead.
That's how words work.
Unless they're zombies…
"Living fossil" implies they're something evolution forgot.
And that couldn't be further from the truth.
Even Darwin realized that natural selection didn't always mean change.
If a species has been molded to be successful in its environment, without a new challenge,
it can survive that way for long time.
By this definition, we could be considered a living fossil too, because we don't look
all that different from when our species branched off.
And while "living fossils" might be slowly evolving in shape, that doesn't mean they
aren't changing on molecular level.
Scientists have found that some tuatara DNA appears to be evolving even faster than most
mammals.
Evolution didn't leave these creatures behind
or forget about them.
They're a success story!
"Living fossil" doesn't really give them a lot of credit for winning for so long.
But there is one way that "living fossil" is a good name: Fossils, in the ground or
surviving on some island in New Zealand, can tell us a lot about how evolution has played
out, so we can understand how life came to be like it is today.
But all that aside tuatara are definitely weird, in a TON of ways, which makes sense
for something that's kinda been doing its own evolutionary thing for the past 200 million
years.
For starters, their teeth aren't really teeth.
They're pointy bits of skull sticking out of their jaw, they even have multiple rows
that interlock like little mouth saws…
He looks nice, but you you wouldn't want to get bit by a tuatara…
You definitely wouldn't want to get bit by a tuatara.
Since their teeth are never replaced, they wear down as they age.
Elderly tuatara end up eating soft foods like slugs and larvae
That's just like people, right?
Our diets get all soft as we get older.
Right!
As we get older we're just like the tuatara.
They don't have ears, but they can still hear.
Their hearts and lungs… super primitive.
They're also the only true diapsids, they have these two big holes right here in their
skull… which doesn't sound important, but it's a huge deal to paleontologists!
Tuatara have one really cool feature that nothing else in the world really has.
It's called a parietal eye, and it's kind of on top of its head, if you can see it right
there.
There are cornea, there's lens in there, there's even really primitive rod structures.
And there's a nerve that attaches right to the brain.
So it can sense differences in light and shadows.
Yes, you heard that right.
They've got a third eye right smack in the middle of their forehead.
Many other lizards and frogs have them too, but that eye is more developed in tuatara
than in any other species.
It might not be easy to see from the outside, but its skull shows right where that nerve
feeds into the brain.
This is already cool, but you and I share a small remnant of this extra sensory system.
We think tuatara and other non-warm blooded animals use their extra eye to sense the length
of the day.
It communicates with an area of the brain that helps set its internal biological clock:
day, night, and seasonal cycles.
Well, deep inside our brain we find the same structure, the pineal gland, which we also
use to sense night and day, and tell us when it's time to sleep.
We don't have a third eye, but we do share something just as cool.
What up, cuz?
Semi-related!
And in case you're wondering how you make a baby tuatara… you guessed it.
That's weird too!
They're kind of special in the fact that they don't have outward sex organs.
And the other cool thing about them is they're actually temperature sex-determined.
So females are gonna be produced at lower temperatures, and males at higher temperatures.
Here's a trait where tuatara are joined by many other reptiles, and even some fish.
But it makes creatures like these especially sensitive to climate change.
Shifts in temperature could throw off the whole population ratio…
Obviously females are very important in producing…
You need both!
You need both to make more tuatara.
Don't worry man, we'll see what we can do.
What all this shows us is while these quote/unquote "primitive" reptiles yes, are very weird,
that weirdness has made them winners in the game of evolution.
I mean, if it ain't broke, don't evolve it!
So, spolier: Tuatara are a major character in Turtles All The Way Down, a story about
fitting in.
But it's kind of a funny animal to put in the middle of your story
So, why'd you do it John?
I think the main reason I chose to write about tuatara is
that even though they haven't changed body forms much is 150 million years
and they do everything incredible slowly
they also have this really fast rate of molecular evolution and I thought that reflected something about Aza
she's not changing much on the outside necessarily, but inside there's this constant teaming change
Living fossils aren't species that are about to expire.
They aren't leftovers that are just as good dead as alive.
They're important today, for a lot of reasons.
Every living thing on Earth has value.
Because they've all played a part in each other's story, and everything that's ever
lived is a success.
But out of all these valuable things, I think a few can teach us something special about
life: how it was, how it is now, and how it got to be that way.
Maybe they don't exactly "fit" in.
But they're survivors.
And in a sea of change, they keep shining just a little bit brighter.
Like a tuatara.
Get it?
It's literally change!
Stay curious.

Making a professional paint palette out of a kid's toy - Duration: 6:25.
Hello friends!
It's Kat, from MeowMeowKapow.
There's a super small local art shop near my town that I like to go into because you
can spend hours browsing through every single corner completely packed with supplies and
discover things you never even knew existed.
For instance, I'd never seen this tiny little kid's palette until I looked in their clearance
section.
It was the only one of its kind, and slightly broken, but pretty gosh darned adorable.
Since buying this one, I haven't been able to find the same thing anywhere else, but
I'll link something similar down in the doobly-doo with the rest of the supplies.
I knew immediately that I wanted to convert it into a tiny palette full of professional
paints, but it just wouldn't be fair if I did that without testing its original paints,
first.
Honestly, they're not too bad!
They layer well on top of one another and they're about a medium strength when it
comes to the pigmentation of their colors.
I almost feel bad for gouging out all those cute little paint dots with the back of my
brush.
Almost.
It took a bit of effort to get the glue and residual paint cleaned up but really wasn't
that big of a deal.
This little guy has space for eight paints, so I picked 8 colors from my stash of Sennelier
watercolors.
Truth be told, I have a whole bunch of Sennelier paints because my little art store actually
sells them and I usually pick up a tube or two every time I go in, but I don't actually
have a proper palette for them.
I've only ever used six random colors, so intentionally choosing a color selection was
really nice!
Here we've got Rose Madder Lake, Scarlet Lacquer, Cadmium Lemon Yellow, Quinacridone
Gold, Phthalo Blue, Cobalt deep, Indigo, and Sepia warm.
I love the little random 6 color kit I've been using up to this point, but having a
set that can actually mix a black is going to be such a relief.
I use my Sennelier paints most when I'm sketching random people at the diner because
the transparency and layering abilities of these paints make for excellent portrait work.
That's really my favorite way to use them.
I knew I'd want to make a color chart to make it easier to refill once the paint started
to run out, so I traced the shape of the palette on a piece of paper, wrote down the color
names, made swatches, and laminated it with tape just like we did in our Holbein palette
setup.
Except this is one piece of paper instead of many.
Also, at some point I realized that the tiny little circle on the side of the palette that
looks like it's where a keychain is supposed to connect is ACTUALLY a little holder for
the paint brush-how cute!
One thing that I noticed when I was testing out the original paints is that the lid doesn't
quite open up flat,
meaning that your mixes tend to follow gravity towards the inside edge, rather than staying
put.
I figured the easiest way to fix this problem as well as make room for the color chart was
to make a pocket on the underside of the palette that would hold the color chart in place while
not in use, and attach the color chart to the lid so that the tension would force the
lid to lay flat once the chart was out.
All of this was made out of packing tape by folding a piece of tape in half to make the
long piece that would attach the chart to the lid, as well as folding a piece in half
to make sure there was a pocket for the chart to live in when it wasn't being used.
I also used more tape to secure everything to the palette, making sure that my little
pocket and strip were attached at multiple points.
Honestly, I probably went a little crazy with this step but I'm kind of a disaster zone
so it's always better for me to just take extra care with securing things in place.
I'd really hate for this to just fall apart in my pocket one day.
Thankfully, the tension strip and pocket work perfectly!
And as a bonus, when the lid is open and the color chart isn't exposed, the extra length
from the strip works as a finger ring so I can hold it in my hand easily.
I actually haven't used a single one of the colors in this palette before, so there's
no way I'd back out of having an excuse to give them a shot once the whole thing was
set up!
I chose to work from a pic of myself as a base, but altered it pretty heavily because….
I felt like it?
Mostly I just liked the angle of the shot and the fact that my black dress was hooded.
I can not tell you how excited I was to be able to mix multiple blacks so easily!
This paint doodle was done in the Moleskine Watercolor book Eve gave me in our subscription
box swap, and while I still don't recommend this sketchbook, I really don't want to
waste the paper so it's probably going to get plenty of use.
In case you hadn't noticed, I love setting up new paint palettes, especially if they're
made out of unexpected items or have some useful element of customization.
Do you like to do this, too?
What are some of your favorite setups?
And please, if you like spending time with me on our art adventures, please remember
to like and subscribe.
I've also got a link in the doobly-doo to my Ko-Fi account where all donations will
100% go to funding the supplies for these videos.
Until I see you next time, I wish you peace, love, and teeny-tiny little paint brushes.
Bye!

Basic Right-of-Way Rules and Who Goes First in Road Traffic - Duration: 3:38.
[TITLE: BASIC RIGHT OF WAY RULES AND WHO GOES FIRST IN ROAD TRAFFIC]
Hi there smart drivers. Rick with Smart Drive Test. Quick video on the basics of
right-of-way and basic rules of the road. So stick around, we'll be right back with that information.
[INTRO & MUSIC]
Hi there smart drivers. Welcome back. Basic rules of the road - straight through
traffic has the right of way over turning traffic. And for those of us that drive
on the right side of the road, right turning vehicles have the right-of-way
over left turning vehicles. If both drivers are turning left, they can both turn at
the same time. Now if you're driving on the left side of the road, left turning
vehicles have the right-of-way over right turning vehicles. As you can see
here in the video, I was trying to make a left-hand turn tonight and the woman who
was turning right insisted that I go before her, and waved me on. And finally I
got tired of waiting for her and went. But it does annoy me and I suspect
other veteran drivers as well, when the other person has the right-of-way and
you're waiting for them to proceed and they don't; and they're waving you on. As
well, in the video here--this was mentioned over on the mastermind group
on Facebook, and if you haven't joined that already be sure to head over there
and join up for that--the two-way stop at a major road. And oftentimes when you
come up to a major road from a minor road, the intersection is going to be controlled with
either with a yield sign or it's going to be controlled with a STOP sign. In
this case it was a STOP sign. And the person turning left did not know that
the straight-through vehicle had the right-of-way over the turning vehicle.
And I think what had happened is the driver confused the intersection as a
four-way stop, and was thinking that the rules for four-way stops applied, which
are different than a two-way stop intersection. At a two-way stop
intersection straight through traffic has the right-of-way over turning
traffic; at a four-way stop it's the first person to arrive or the person on
the right. And again, straight through traffic has the right-of-way over
turning traffic if you both show up at the same time. And remember, the
right-of-way is always given, it is never taken. So if somebody else is insisting
they're gonna go first, just let them go and go and have their crash somewhere else.
Question for my smart drivers: have you ever been confused at an intersection
and let the other person go because you didn't know who had the right-of-way?
Leave a comment down in the comment section there. All of that helps out the
new drivers working towards a license and veteran drivers working towards
being crash free. if you like what you see here share subscribe leave a comment

Why Are There So Many Different Names for the Plan of Salvation in the Book of Mormon? Knowhy #312 - Duration: 1:52.
The Book of Mormon refers to God's plan for us by many names.
A careful examination of each of these names
can help us to better understand God's plan for His children.
Some names for the plan,
such as "the plan of our God"
and "the great plan of the Eternal God",
serve as reminders that God Himself put the plan in place,
and the plan is therefore perfect and should be followed.
Other names, such as "the merciful plan of the great Creator",
and "the plan of mercy",
show the benevolence of God in creating a plan to deal with forces such as death and sin
that would otherwise hold eternal sway.
Names like "the great and eternal plan of deliverance from death",
and "the plan of restoration",
show that the plan ensures that all people will be resurrected.
One name stands out as the most common name for the plan in the Book of Mormon:
the "plan of redemption."
It appears in 15 different verses of the Book of Mormon.
This name reminds readers that the plan offers redemption from sin and death.
Two of the most common names for the plan today
are "the plan of happiness", and "the plan of salvation".
These names demonstrate that even though parts of the plan are difficult to live up to,
it's ultimate objective is our happiness and salvation.
The different names for the plan show how all-encompassing it is.
The Book of Mormon gives an expansively broad view of God's plan,
and of humanity's place in the universe.
Knowledge of the many different facets of the plan
can provide comfort and hope in a complex world
that appears, at times, to be chaotic.
And now you know why.

THE EVOLUTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS THE SUBTLE BODY & HOW IT EVOLVES – PART 2 - Duration: 13:02.
THE EVOLUTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS THE SUBTLE BODY & HOW IT EVOLVES PART 2
BY HEARTFULNESS
In Part 1 of this series, Kamlesh D. Patel described the three main bodies that together,
form the base of life forms on earth.
In this second article of the series, he explores one of these in depth; the subtle body, and
how it evolves.
THE SCIENCE OF SPIRITUALITY Which body evolves?
Understanding that we have these three bodies physical, subtle, and causal we can
then ask, which of these bodies is evolving?
The soul is immutable.
It is pure, absolute and unchangeable, and so the causal body does not evolve.
The physical body cannot change much.
Its structure is fixed, although some minor changes can occur in weight, posture and fitness
etc., but we cannot grow extra arms, wings to fly, or a tail in this lifetime.
It is the subtle body that can evolve, so that we can design our destiny.
It changes according to how we purify and simplify it, so that the joy of the soul shines
and radiates from within, and through this process we find the evolution of consciousness.
The Subtle Body The subtle body is a vibrational field; the
heart-mind field.
Depending on how we manage this field, it can either be turbulent and complex, like
a roaring ocean during a storm, or, at the other extreme, it can be like a still pond
where even a feather landing on the surface creates ripples.
This is where a spiritual practice has a vital role to play, as it gives us the techniques
to regulate, purify, and simplify this field, bringing clarity, stillness, and peace.
In yogic philosophy the heart is known as the field of action for the mind.
This is a vast topic.
Lets start to explore what this means.
There are four main functions of the subtle body within this vibrational field consciousness
(chit), thinking and feeling (manas), intellect (buddhi) and ego (ahankar).
They work in an interactive way together to make up what we know as the mind.
Of these four, consciousness is our focus here.
The other three have their existence in consciousness.
Consciousness is as good as a canvas to a painter, and within consciousness the play
of the other three bodies is orchestrated daily.
How do we actively allow our consciousness to expand and evolve?
It is not enough just to wish it so.
We need to understand how a spiritual practice contributes towards this evolution by creating
the conditions for stilling the mind progressively at deeper and deeper levels, and opening up
the inner universe.
At a physical level, when I want to strengthen my body muscles I have to exercise my body.
Similarly, for the mind to evolve so that consciousness can expand, I must use what
belongs to that subtle plane of existence.
First, it is important to understand that the evolution of consciousness has nothing
to do with the acquisition of knowledge.
Second, consciousness in itself will not expand or evolve without the help of buddhi, manas
and ahankar to free it.
Intellect has to evolve to help expand consciousness and ego must evolve, contributing to the evolution
of consciousness.
UNLESS AND UNTIL WE MEDITATE PROPERLY, AND UNLESS AND UNTIL WE REGULATE
OUR MINDS PROPERLY, OUR CONSCIOUSNESS WILL NOT EVOLVE.
Meditation What does meditation have to do with this?
We meditate to regulate our minds.
An unregulated mind is pulled by wishes and desires, fears and habits, in many different
directions.
The mind becomes weak as it scatters in many different channels.
In contrast, a regulated mind brings focus, and promotes well- being.
Unless and until we meditate properly, and unless and until we regulate our minds properly,
our consciousness will not evolve.
Manas, buddhi and ahankar are all refined and developed through meditation, especially
manas as we learn to simplify our thinking process from many channels to one channel,
then deepen it to feeling.
Thus the habit of feeling is slowly cultivated from thinking.
Developing the Meditative State Further Holding and nurturing the condition received
in meditation throughout the day is a byproduct of good meditation, and helps us regulate
and deepen the mind to an even higher level.
When we are in this state of constant awareness or remembrance of the inner state, we do not
allow our canvas to be spoilt, so consciousness remains afresh.
The canvas remains clean and is not destroyed by the multifarious impressions we form.
Imagine the heart-mind vibrational field having a spectrum of consciousness spanning the subconscious,
conscious, and superconscious states.
Swami Vivekananda once said, Consciousness is a mere film between two oceans, the subconscious
and the superconscious. Or you can imagine the subconscious as being like the ocean,
consciousness like the surface of the land, and superconsciousness like the sky going
out into the universe.
As we evolve, our consciousness expands into both the subconscious and superconscious realms,
traveling through the vast infinity of the human potential.
Another way of saying this is that we go deeper and deeper into the vastness of the heart,
from our starting point at the surface.
WISDOM IS TO UTILIZE ALL OUR FACULTIES AT THEIR BEST.
WISDOM IS TO HAVE THE MAXIMUM OUTPUT WITH THE MINIMUM INPUT.
Buddhi and Prayer In this process of diving deeper, the intellect,
buddhi, becomes more and more heart-based.
Intuition and inspiration develop, and buddhi becomes fine-tuned, like a sensitive antenna
picking up the signals of the heart.
Intellect evolves into a state of wisdom.
Often we think of a wise person as someone who makes wise choices, but here we go further
into a different dimension where choice is no longer required, as the hearts wisdom
is pure and correct.
There is a big difference between an intellectual person and a wise person, and here the spiritual
practice of prayer helps us to move from mere intellect to wisdom.
Prayer takes us into the heart, connecting us to the Source, where we are able to let
go of any mistakes we have made, deciding not to make the same mistakes again.
Is this not wisdom?
Whereas if we succumb to making foolish mistakes day after day, hour after hour, we are not
becoming wiser.
We become wiser when we wish to change from the bottom of our hearts and ask for help
to do so.
When we live with this attitude every moment, wisdom flourishes.
Wisdom is to utilise all our faculties at their best.
Wisdom is to have the maximum output with the minimum input.
With minimum action we have the maximum result.
Only with a meditative mind, only through meditative acts in our day-to-day life, can
we expect to have such good results.
Purifying and Simplifying the Subtle Body Through Cleaning
For this to happen, the heart-mind field has to be purified, otherwise it is like expecting
to see the bottom of a lake through muddy, turbulent water.
There is no clarity in a turbulent mind.
The spiritual practice of cleaning past impressions is therefore also necessary for consciousness
to evolve.
Ahankar The third aspect of the subtle body is ego,
ahankar.
Ego plays a vital role in whether or not expansion or evolution of consciousness occurs.
Ego is often seen as the bad guy by spiritual practitioners of all traditions, but ego is
also essential for our evolution.
It is the active function of the mind the doing, thinking function and we need it
in every aspect of daily life, even to have the craving to evolve.
It gives us our identity.
It is the activating or initiating force.
If it is used wisely, it serves us well, like any other resource, but it is often misused,
and this is what we commonly refer to as being egotistical.
When ego is used for selfish purpose, we become arrogant and self-important, whereas if we
constantly refine the ego, consciousness develops very rapidly.
What does it mean to refine the ego?
The more humility we have, the less the egotistical proliferations.
All great spiritual teachers have given so much importance to this aspect of character
formation.
They have valued this quality so highly that humility at any cost must be maintained, whether
towards a child, a poor person, or a stranger.
The philosophy here is that there is nothing wrong in thinking yourself to be great, but
always think the other person in front of you is greater.
Ego can be like a black hole.
It can have the greatest gravitational pull upon our consciousness.
It will not allow consciousness to expand.
Just as the earths gravitational pull does not allow us to fall into infinite space,
likewise our ego can hold consciousness to its core.
An example of this is a very narcissistic person, who is undergoing a devolutionary
process where consciousness contracts in on itself to its core, and can become like a
stone.
In contrast, by transcending the relationship with the ego by refining it, becoming more
and more humble, consciousness can expand infinitely.
Ego manifests in many ways.
For example, in a music concert, when I am happily playing my flute as a performer, it
gives so much joy and the audience reciprocates accordingly.
But as an artist, I will not be happy unless I surpass my previous performances all the
time.
The manifested ego makes me perform well.
But to think that no one can play the flute better than myself is not a welcome manifestation
of ego.
Ego can be our best friend in helping us outperform our own past records.
EGO CAN BE LIKE A BLACK HOLE.
IT CAN HAVE THE GREATEST GRAVITATIONAL PULL UPON OUR CONSCIOUSNESS.
IT WILL NOT ALLOW CONSCIOUSNESS TO EXPAND.
Manas The fourth function of the subtle body is
manas, which is the function of contemplation.
During meditation, the first step is to bring the mind from many and varied thoughts to
one thought, for example in Heartfulness it is the source of Divine Light in the heart.
But it is not necessary that all throughout the meditation this thought should haunt us.
The thought should leave at some point so that the object of thought can be felt in
the heart.
If all you do is think this one thought throughout the meditation, you will have a headache and
consciousness will not expand.
This initial thought is just the springboard, to take us deeper so that we dissolve in the
feeling of the presence of the Divine Light.
You have to feel that presence and while you are feeling that presence slowly you disappear,
and even feeling is gone.
The ego is gone; you are not even there to experience it.
So as manas evolves through a meditation practice, feeling develops, and eventually we go beyond
feeling to a state of being, then to a state of becoming, and finally unbecoming to merge
into the Absolute state of existence.
Chit So buddhi, manas and ahankar evolve through
spiritual practice, and with this the subtle body becomes lighter, purer and simpler, like
the still pond with minimal ripples.
With this, consciousness is able to expand and evolve.
What do we then do with this expanded consciousness we receive?
Lets say I have a particular state of mind, and I am aware that the condition is so good.
After meditation, I go off to work.
It is not enough just to hold that condition; I must be able to radiate that condition wilfully,
consciously, and with the confidence that wherever I go it will spread its fragrance
on its own.
So after meditation think for a while that, The condition which is within me is also
outside me.
Everything around me is absorbed in a similar state.
When I look at people, or talk to them, or listen to them, or I am silent, let that condition
spread everywhere. Let consciousness expand wherever it can go.
To be continued

🤑 Changing Brake Discs + Pads 💶 FOR LESS THAN 50 € !! ✅ - Duration: 30:24.
Hello everyone, welcome to Garage, Bangers and Rock'n Roll
today I change the front-brakes of the Renault Twingo
discs and pads for less than 50 bucks!
and I take this opportunity to save more than 250 euros
Ouuuuuh !!
the Twingo has braking problems at the front brakes
it's been a few days since it does not brake very well
it makes funny sounds. We will look together where the problem comes from
I will show you how I change the discs and pads on this car
and at the end of the video
I will show you how I did to
save 250 euros
So you can see that I have already placed the car
on jack stands in front.
if you do not know how to do it
I give you a link here at the top right
and down in the description on my video
to lift your car with a jack
and jack stands safely
let's see what happened to the front brake
right of the car
we will first inspect
the thickness of the brake pads
I have a little tool
a small gauge that allows you to evaluate the thickness
when it's green it's good
yellow, you have to think about changing, and red you have to change
so here
we have the first pad here
so here it is ...
almost completely worn
ok the yellow gauge still fit but hey ...
that one, you really have to change it
on the other side what does it give?
Oh, cow!
Wait! I'm zooming in for you!
this pad is
completely worn out
that's it we are on metal, so in fact:
right here
there right there you have the piston rubber
and here is the pad
and there you see the disc is completely scratched
and the pad
there is no friction material left at all
we are really metal against metal
and metal against metal, it does not work at all!
let's see what it gives on the other side now
this side,
same, there is a little bit of braking material
this yellow one fits
that one must be changed, the other side now
ok, here we have exactly the same problem
this pad is completely shot
and there is only the metal of the pad base
which rubs against the disc
and there you can see the state of the disc
ouch! it's very bad, it's very rough
there is no choice: you really have to change disks and pads
I will already start with a good cleaning of the brake caliper
for once the brake-cleaner is actually used
to clean the brakes
I have my basin below
pay attention to the rubber that is here
on the guides
I take my other bottle
never run out of brake-cleaner eh?
in order to freely rotate the wheels
I put the contact on
which releases the lock of the steering wheel
it now allows me to turn easily
the front hub
and here I'm going to push
the brake jaws
so that you can then pull out the caliper
see that it's a disk that's broken down
in the disk inside there are holes
I can come and slide my tool in there
and there I leverage on the plate that is there
to make it go back
here! it is enough that she recedes a little bit
there here you can see she fell back
a little bit compared to the disc in there
now I'm going to unscrew this screw which is at the end of the guide
this guide is what allows the caliper to move
so that it does not turn here
so that this column does not turn
you have to hold with a flat key
like that
here
see that here there is some yellow: it is the threadlock
it will be necessary to have some on the new screws
same up
I unscrew it at the top, it's the same principle
I will not unscrew it completely
if you only change the pads you can open
the caliper like that
there you have access to the pads, you remove the old ones
look at those ones!
there is no longer any friction material on it
there we really touched the metal
and you put the new pads
I'm going to change the discs too,
so I'll have to unlock
the caliper base
it is this fixed part there that holds the caliper
so I will finish unscrewing the second screw that is above
and here I take a little hook that I put here
where there was the top screw
I'll hang it in the suspension
being careful not to twist the hose that is there
now I take my half-inch ratchet
it's Orc Waist, with the socket of 19
and I'm going to unscrew the two big screws that are there
to unmount the caliper base
FAIL
it's not the 19mm, it's 18
sorry…
there the previous guy that did that, he squeezed it
like a nag
I will go get my breaker bar
Hop! with the right tools
it works alone
go! second!
There you go!
and here is the famous fixed part
caliper
with there the second plate
there is still a little but the same: she died that one!
ok now we have access to the disk
I replace it
you see that it is held by two screws here
it's Torx40
in general they are hard to unscrew
so I use an impact screwdriver to hit
I think I will not be able to do that
I think that by insisting with the screwdriver
we should be able to break loose these two screws
I have an impact wrench, I will use it
go hop!
magic of the compressed air tool
There you go!
now
we have to pop out this disc, if we are lucky it comes easily
and if we have no luck ...
it is not coming
FAIL
a bit like that
I will try to take it out
tapping on it with the hammer buddy
and therefore hearing protection
and especially eye protection
I will use a lever bar that I will place behind the disk
between the hub carrier and the disc
There you go! I was not the guys who changed that disk
previously
actually when I bought this car about two years ago
it already had those brakes on the front
I have not changed them since
if it would have been me
I think they would have come more easily
since each time I put new discs I put
a light coat of copper grease
inside the disc
so that the disc does not stick to the hub like that
allright we try with the lever bar
we will see what it gives
this bar of leverage I'll come and place it here
and I will take support
against here the hub carrier, like that
and pulling on it normally
I hope to drop the disc
there is also that place that is not bad to take support
obviously it slips
I'm doing it
and I take another fulcrum
Victory!
and there it is!
here it must have rusted
it got welded here with the hub carrier
but now I've released it without much harm finally
using the right tool
so here is my new disc set
the package was taped by hand so I think
it's a box that already had to be opened
and forwarded
good for the price it's okay, I will not complain
here too the label has been cut
and rescotted
if it's not beautiful!
there were some traces
obviously
it has already been unpacked once
but there is no trace of editing so it's good
so I'll quickly check that it fits
in the old room
That's right
at the level of the holes it's good
let's go for editing
now I'm going to do a good cleaning of the wheel hub for
to be sure the new disc
plate well against
that there is no impurity
you can do that with
hand brushes like that
take your time
and clean all the way around
for my part I have pneumatic tools
so I'm going to take my rotating brush
There you go! in a minute it's all clean
I put a thin layer of copper grease on the hub
to facilitate the removal of the disc for the next time
and there we spread out
maximum
it really is
the finest layer possible
the goal is simply to cut off the oxygen contact
to prevent it from rusting
that's great!
this one is really good coppery grease
I put the link below in the description
setting up the disc:
on some ventilated disks
the notches that are here
to ventilate the disc inside
they have a meaning, they are a little
in bias like that
and there is a disc that goes right
and the other on the left of the car
in this case there is no direction of assembly
in fact even for a Twingo
I think it would not make any difference
those with direction of assembly
I think it's for performance brakes
which is not our case here
you must be careful not to add copper grease
on the surface of the disc
these discs are special anti-corrosion
there is no need
to degrease them
before mounting them
but on most other disks, normal disks
you have to go through a cleaner and brake
or degreaser on the whole surface
contact with platelets
in this case it makes editing easier and I hope
that it will increase a little the lifetime of the disc
There you go!
I will put the small screws
I turn the wheels
to have access to reassemble the caliper
now, before putting it back
the caliper, we will do two things:
highly important
and I insist a lot on that: it's cleaning
caliper
the cheking process
that the balusters here
move well
that there is no resistance
and that's the case
if you have any resistance
you take them out
and you grease them
good!
besides, I'll do it, so I'll show you how I do it
in this BGS box
for brakes that makes
drum brake and caliper brake
we have an ultra-important tool
it's this file
see that it's a special caliper file
she files on four sides, she is square
and she'll go, you'll see him
great to clean
the rails where the pads slide
and it also comes with brushes
different hardnesses
that's sweet, and it's a lot harder
I'm going to take the hard-haired one
lime and we clean all that
I will already go with the brush
the places where platelets will come to move is here
and there ... both sides
that's really what I'm going to focus on
now a good lime
in one movement I file both sides
perpendiculars here
that's the result
on the other side now
There you go! super efficient work with this special file!
now I'm going to check the balusters
there they slide very well
and I will grease them again
for that I use fat
silicone
because the bellows that are there are rubber
and if we use conventional multi-purpose grease
oil-based, it ends up eating the rubbers
I will take off that one. Hop!
in silicone grease, I have some grease spray
not to be confused with silicone lubricant
so it's really a thick layer
but hey it may not be the best
I would have preferred silicone potted grease, but there I have not
if I find you silicone potted grease
I put the link below in the description
you see that makes a movie
who stays on the small column
I will also put some in there
hop!
it reacts
and to reclipse
the bellows, just press it all the way
you turn a little, and that's it!
and let the air out
press deeply
here! there it slides very well
same for the 2nd
Hop!
these parts take all the braking load
sometimes it happens that they are
completely worn
and they must be replaced
in general it is suddenly the caliper that must be replaced
so there you have to really get out the air
we can even pinch the bellows
now for contact surfaces
with the pads, I'll put some ceramic grease
for brakes
so that's special high temperature
and I really put it
very very little
and I spread it really well
the goal is
there are two goals in fact
it is to promote the slippage of platelets
and 2, it is to cut
contact with oxygen not only for
it rust
here! so it's really very fine but it covers everything
now it's ready, I can put it back on the hub carrier
I put in place the caliper chappe here
so there will be two screws that will come here
it's these, you can see that
there are red marks on it
that's the threadlock
which is put originally on the screws there
it's screws that are tight very tight
according to the RTA they must be tightened to 100Nm
it's really huge
I'm going to put some threadlock on it
I do not really put much
and you see I took medium
there is no point in taking the threadlock
hard, because after we can not disassemble anymore
so I put a drop
that's enough
now tightening dynamo
100Nm is 98 + 2
go!
you have to try to do it in one movement like that
here!
second
OK
according to the RTA there are the tightening torques here
the screws holding the disc must be tightened to 20Nm
it's hard to tighten those screws
because the disc is spinning
but now that we have the hatch that is mounted
I will be able to block the disk
with a screwdriver simply by passing it here
and there we stop him from turning
it is only possible with ventilated disks
I take my little dynamo key
that I set at 20
which is almost the maximum on this key
like it's a tiny quarter-inch tip
I put a small converter to 3 / 8th
and I take the tip
T40 of the ratchet case
and I'm shaking
this chappe ...
the caliper has soiled the disc
I'll clean it with a little bit of brake cleaner
I was starting to miss it
now the pads: I took ferrodo
they come with two cables
it's for platelet wear warning systems
but for the Twingo there is none
as well as new screws for the balusters
for the
to put it is very very simple
first I will show you a little the thickness of new pads
compared to those that are worn
you see: there is no picture anyway
especially with this one
since I have already put fat here on the chappe
I will not add to the ears here
I consider it sufficient with what is there
to put it is very simple
hop!
on this caliper model it's really ultra-simple
now you see that the distance there
the distance between the two edges of platelets has increased
so we can not put the caliper
because here the piston is completely out
we will have to return
the piston in its housing
to repel it I'm going to use
a push-piston box like that
I'm going to take that
I'm going to take this one, it's magnetic
it's all alone
now to get this piston in his housing, there are two ways to do
there is either:
you put the tool and you push back
it's going to force
the brake fluid to be distributed by the hose
to the brake fluid jar
if you want to do that method
that's fine, just think of
open the brake jar
in the engine compartment
my way of proceeding is a little different
what I like to do is open the bleed screw that is there
and when I push back the plunger
I take the brake fluid out here
there are some advantages to doing like this:
I do not force the old brake fluid that ends up
in it: it is the one who works the most: who heats and who cools
the most when the brakes work
I do not force him to go back to the jar
he goes right out here
and it makes the bleed screw work
every time I do the operation there
and that's good, it's preventing
a little to be taken
by rust
and then after obviously I will add to the jar with
new brake fluid
since I'm going to work there
above the new disc, the new disc I left
I will protect all that with paper
here
now I'm going to blow a brush on the bleed screw
I take the soft brush
because I do not want to damage the rubber
of the cap
a little bit of WD40
oh, I'm coming to the end of my WD40
we will have to resume
and then I start loosening this bleed screw
so this is 8
I will take the grommet because I am afraid to rip and damage the screw
here
she was hard enough to unscrew that one!
I will not unscrew more
now I put up my little purge can
which has a non-return system
and I hang it with the small hook to the suspension
here
and this pipe here has to go up, like that the air bubbles
will go up
I'm also careful
that the bleed screw is placed at the most
up here
because there by pushing the piston it is not necessary that
I introduce air into the system
it is not desired
you will find on some tutorials on the internet recommendations
like what to remove the skirt of the piston
here and then clean underneath
and then put it back, check that there is no rust on the piston etc ...
personally I do not do it because I consider that
if you lift the skirt and check
very often we introduce impurities
in the piston
and anyway if it is rusty there is not much to do
it will seize, it will change the caliper
so I'm going to push him back into his house as he is like that
anyway by pushing back it feels good if it really blocks or not
we know in what state the piston is
here I am with the tool and I realize that I can not place it
FAIL
if you look: usually normally here
there is a hole that allows you to place
the screw of the tool
but in this case there is none
so
I do not know, I'll try to put it anyway
maybe by placing it like that
but hey it's not going to push very straight
the piston behind, it's not terrible
in those cases you have to be a bit creative
either you can use a large clip
multiple like that
and then you apply it
ideally you'd have to have a much bigger one that can
take the piston on both sides and come
in support behind there
and you simply press like that on the piston and it makes it go
I have a little push-piston
universal, it's really the small tool at 5 euros
I will try to use it
I think he may have better support
it has the advantage of having a screw that is much thinner
so he can get closer to the edge a little better
I'm going to use that to push back the piston
I put it in place, I squeeze a little
I open the bleed screw completely
so there at that moment I really place
the bleed screw at the highest point
and I live hoping that
this piston wants to get into his home
it's not great, it slips
there you see the rising liquid
normally really you have to take
an adapted tool that allows
push the piston straight
that's not really the case
but here I am with the means of the edge
ok there it seems to be much better
we will get there!
I wonder if it would not go faster anyway with that
hop!
at full speed!
impeccable! so I tighten
the bleed screw
do not squeeze too hard, normally there is a couple
tightening but it's impossible
to pass a tool as long as there is the hose on it
you have to squeeze but not too hard
so that next time it can be unscrewed without breaking
now i'm going to clean
parts of the caliper that are in contact with the pads
that side
and then the round there around the piston
and so I pick up the file
special
I will pick up the can before continuing
a little bit of cleaner-brake
immediately hood!
no blowgun to remove dust: it's cleaner-brake
now: ceramic paste on both surfaces
this is the result: on the piston it's really
thin layer
I put a little bit more
but it's okay
then the pads got the trunk
I put them back
now I rest the piston
there it just fit so it's good
new screw, so there since there are springs that
are here, it must be done already
the first who is there
there, to prevent it from turning
a flat key here
and then for the 2nd one has to support
tightening the two screws of the balusters
it's 13
it's hard enough because there is a threadlock
above
I'm going to do the other one before squeezing
so here I squeeze hard enough
I did not find any tightening torque
for those two screws
I go to the filling
since there is a threadlock on it there is still no risk that it unscrews
here!
here is this side is done, I do the other side and we find ourselves right after
here I have just finished the other side, it went well
I just had a little problem with a wafer
when I put it back in the caliper it was hard to get in
so I did not hesitate to bring it out
to take back the file and to file the caliper
you really need new pads, when you put them in the caliper
they come back without effort and they slide well
so there are 4 things to do to finish
this work
the first is to have a good blow of cleaner brake
on the disc, on both sides
obviously both discs
then you have to check the brake fluid level
at the level of the jar
and you have to upgrade it if necessary
especially if you used the method
that I used when opening
the bleed screw to bring back the piston
3rd thing is to go pump on the brake pedal
until it becomes hard
the first shots will be soft, it's normal, we will bring the piston
platelets and platelets
against the disc
it's very important to do it before taking the road
otherwise at 1st braking you will have a hell of a bad surprise
the others too
last thing to do is put the wheels back in place
get off the car on the ground: as soon as the wheels touch the ground
we tighten the couple
and then we are good to test road braking
of course before starting at full speed on the roads
you have to test flat braking like that
you advance a little bit, you brake, you retreat a little, you brake
and for the first 100 km, you have to break in
brakes, so you have to slow down
I am at 75km / h, I brake
not bad
we will go faster
here! 90!
I brake
impeccable
super braking
it's all good!
and now the cost of this operation: change disks and pads
as I did the work myself, I only had to pay
the pieces, so I had the game of two discs
Hella Pagid for € 30.82
I had the 4 pads at 16,20 €
so there it was an excellent promo about 70% less
on everything that was braking parts
in addition to that on the site at that time
there was a good discount on postage
so it was delivered to me for less than 2 €
total: € 49.01
for front brakes completely redone
and therefore less than 50 €
so to compare
this time I had two quotes
one at a Renault garage
and the 2nd at a multi-brand independent garages
we will go through them together
for the first: Renault garage
at the parts level
the discs are a little less than 140 euros HT
the brake pads
just under 54 euros
they have a little over an hour of manpower
we are at 62 euros HT
labor
so there is 51 euros of VAT
above, we arrive at a total bill
from 307 euros
for the 2nd estimate: the independent mechanic
it's about the same: the discs:
104 euros before tax
pads 46 euros
manpower: it counts one hour and a half: 82 euros
VAT: just under 50 euros in this case
and we're pretty much
same order of magnitude: we are at 284 euros roughly
if we compare with the Renault quote, I made
a savings of more than 250 euros
and then for the other quote, a little less
250 euros
I do not say that to criticize or harm
professionals
mechanics are great people who
everyday
solve thousands of problems
I just want to show that by making oneself
we save money
but there are other solutions for
saving money: you can also
buy the parts
not expensive
and get them up by a professional
especially for the brakes, if you do not feel
it's a very good option
the economy will be a little less but it will surely not hurt
especially if you watch promotions like this
if you want to know about
which site I managed to get these cheap pieces
I will not tell you, however
I will give you a little hint
here I imagine that with that you have found easily
that's it for today, if you wish
to get the tools or products I used in this video
I put the links below in the description
I wish you a safe journey
good braking
see you
and Rock'n Roll!

Never attended COLLABORATE? Oracle's Cliff Godwin has a message for you. - Duration: 2:38.
>> ALYSSA: What would you say to users that have never attended COLLABORATE what your
experience is and how you see them having value from coming?
>> CLIFF: Sure, well, I mean, I'm a bit of a veteran of it.
I think I've gone to every COLLABORATE since 1991.
I've always found it very valuable personally.
But as a user, what I would say is that COLLABORATE is not a marketing event.
COLLABORATE is a user education event.
It's a user-success-oriented event.
What it brings together is a combination of input from development, where you can hear
myself and other people who lead parts of development, talk about what we're going to
build in the product, what's coming next, what the roadmap is.
You need that information so you can plan whether or not to customize or what features
are coming you might want to update.
So you get that element of information about where the products are all going and a chance
to interact very informally and very easily with a lot of the leadership of EBS development.
Very accessible.
But probably even more valuable is the user presentations.
Because what you really want to understand as a user is not just what's the product going
to do, but what does it really mean to adopt it?
Nowadays, for example, with hybrid being the new normal like we talked about, you want
to hear from another user what did it really mean when you tried to deploy this new SaaS
product in conjunction with your E-Business Suite?
What was the integration experience?
How consistent is the user interface experience?
Whatever the issues you may be wondering about, thinking about how that's really going to
work in your situation, you can find somebody who's already done it.
Or this whole discussion about moving onto cloud infrastructure, you can come and talk
to people who are already ahead of you and maybe already did that project.
You get a real sense of what was it like?
What were the skills involved?
What was easy?
What was hard?
What are the lessons learned?
What do they wish they'd known?
Those kinds of things.
We can't -- from development -- provide those answers.
Only people who have done the project can provide those.
So, COLLABORATE really brings those things together, and I think it's just an incredibly
valuable opportunity for users to get that kind of input as they make their plans on
what to do with the products over the next year or two.
>> ALYSSA: Yes, well, we really appreciate the support of all of your team, not just
at COLLABORATE, but throughout the year, and we really appreciate you joining us today
on our Facebook Live event.
Thank you so much!
>> CLIFF: Great!
It was great!
Thanks, Alyssa.
>> ALYSSA: And for all of our viewers out there, we look forward to seeing you at COLLABORATE
18 in Las Vegas on April 22.
Thank you!
>> CLIFF: See you at COLLABORATE!

10 Fascinating Documents From the Vatican Secret Archives - Duration: 14:41.
There are many dubious claims about what might lie hidden in the Vatican Secret Archives
– from alien remains and time travel devices to prophecies of impending Apocalypse – all
of which position the Holy See as an implausibly powerful agent in the history and fate of
mankind.
But a handful of historical documents made public by the Vatican really do show how much
power the pope has wielded, and how influential his decisions have been – not just within
Christendom but all over the world.
Correspondence with heads of state, aspiring heads of state, and other important figures,
as well as ancient records, papal bulls, and dogmas, all shine a light on the pivotal role
of the pope.
Here are 10 of the most intriguing.
10.
Henry VIII's Request for Divorce
When Henry VIII wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon so he could marry Anne Boleyn, he
found himself mired in Vatican red tape.
So he sent them some of his own: a petition signed by more than 80 clergymen and lords
and appended with all of their seals – each dangling impressively from a row of scarlet
ribbons.
The message was clear: If the pope refused to grant a divorce, England was poised to
rebel.
The manuscript was strongly worded too, threatening "extreme measures" should the king be
denied his request.
Clearly, he expected resistance.
And that's exactly what he got; Pope Clement VII's response came back as an unequivocal
"no."
But what's interesting about the king's letter, discovered under a chair in 1927,
is that it marked a major turning point in British history.
In response to the pope's refusal to grant the divorce, the country turned its back on
the continent in a way that's arguably echoed in Brexit today.
The Church of England, or Anglicanism, re-allocated divine right to the king instead of the pope
and set off a bitter religious feud that would rage for centuries afterward.
9.
Transcripts from the Trial of Galileo
Famously hauled before the Inquisition in 1633, Galileo was rebuked (not for the first
time) for the "absurd, philosophically false" proposition that the Earth orbits the Sun.
But he wasn't the only one working on the theory.
Despite appearing to contradict bible passages in which the sun stops moving in the sky,
the old Copernican theory was gaining traction within the Church.
Even Pope Urban VIII, who ordered Galileo's trial, had at one time praised him for his
work.
However, the Church was going through a turbulent time, and it was now in the pope's interests
to make an example out of Galileo.
For one thing, it sent a message to the astronomer's patrons, the powerful Medicis, warning them
not to take sides in the ongoing Thirty Years War.
For another, it demonstrated to Urban VIII's more conservative political critics that he
was no radical thinker himself.
For many within the Church, though, a more fundamental concern was that Galileo was undermining
Aristotelianism.
They didn't really care whether the Earth orbited the Sun or the Sun orbited the Earth;
what mattered to them was upholding the validity of classical Greek logic, since it was upon
this framework that Christian theology was based.
If Aristotelian philosophy came apart, they feared, the whole Catholic system would go
with it.
In the end, no doubt thanks to friends in high places, the Vatican settled for burning
Galileo's books in lieu of his body.
He did, however, spend his final years under house arrest, and it wasn't until 1992 that
a pope finally apologized for the error.
8.
Letter from the Pope to the Seventh Dalai Lama (1708-1757)
Showing the true extent of the Vatican's global reach, even from relatively early on,
is an 18th century letter sent by Clement XII to the seventh Dalai Lama.
In it, the pope politely requests that a mission of European friars be allowed to preach in
Tibet and, as such, the letter also represents an evolving attitude of interfaith tolerance
within the Vatican.
On this occasion, however, the missionaries were overreaching.
While they were initially welcomed by the Dalai Lama and even allowed to build a church,
they were met with hostility in the end.
Their decision to set themselves up in the capital ultimately proved too ambitious, since
they stood a better chance "saving souls" among the relatively uneducated folk of the
country.
The missionaries did manage to convert a small number of youngsters in Lhasa, but that only
provoked conflict with the elders.
In the end, the friars left Tibet for Nepal and were eventually forced to give up there
as well.
Clearly, they underestimated the deep conviction of Buddhists and Hindus, just as they had
elsewhere – hence the limited spread of Catholicism in Asia, despite its unlimited
reach.
7.
Letter from the Grand Empress Dowager Helena Wang
That said, not all Catholic missions to the Orient were so profoundly unsuccessful.
In China, for instance, the Jesuits had been able to convert even the Grand Empress Dowager
Wang to the faith, bestowing upon her the Christian name Helena in 1648.
This conversion was actually part of a wider strategy to spread Christianity through China
starting from the top.
The Jesuits were historically more organized than other missionary groups, and could be
relied upon to carry out such plans.
When Jesuit priest Andreas Koffler arrived in China through present-day Vietnam, several
key figures of the Southern Ming dynasty had already been converted by his colleagues.
And when Koffler converted the Grand Empress Dowager, a number of others followed – the
Empress Dowager Ma (renamed Maria), the Empress Wang (renamed Anna), and the future Yongli
Emperor himself (who was baptized and renamed Constantine).
Unfortunately for the Church, the rival Qing dynasty were relentless in their campaign
to destroy the Yongli court, and the latter were forced into hiding.
It was during this time that Helena personally wrote to Pope Innocent X.
Her attractive letter – written on silk and scrolled inside a bamboo tube emblazoned
with a black dragon – expressed her devotion to Jesus Christ and urged the pope to send
more Jesuits into China.
It also requested that he intercede with God on her behalf to ensure her family's protection
in exile.
The letter was entrusted to a messenger who returned with it to Rome.
However, by the time it reached the Vatican, Pope Innocent X was already dead.
And by the time the messenger returned to China with a note from Pope Alexander, so
were the Grand Empress Dowager and most of her court.
6.
Papal Bull Splitting the New World in Two
In addition to venturing east, the Vatican set its sights west – dividing and distributing
lands in the New World just as it had in the Old.
Following Spain's discovery of South America and the rivalry this provoked with Portugal,
Pope Alexander VI issued a papal bull splitting the new land in two.
His "inter caetera" was drawn up in 1493 and was basically just a line between the
North Pole and the South Pole "one hundred leagues" west of Cape Verde and the Azores.
The pope declared that everything on the far side was Spanish and everything on the near
side Portuguese.
However, given that 100 leagues is only around 550 kilometers, and that the Azores and Cape
Verde are much closer to Europe than America, it doesn't take a map to realize how unfair
this decision was.
All Portugal got was Brazil, while Spain got everything else – even the Pacific Ocean.
Moreover, the papal bull stipulated that anyone found trespassing on the Spanish side would
be excommunicated and sent to Hell.
Unsurprisingly, Pope Alexander VI, a Borgia, was essentially just a puppet for Spain – not
just Spanish himself but also in need of their support.
And that wasn't the only thing that was unfair about this decision that shaped the
world.
The pope had also bestowed rights – almost orders, in fact – to overthrow the "barbarous
nations" already established in the New World, to colonize, convert, and enslave the
natives, in other words.
Since the 1990s, those natives have campaigned to get it revoked.
5.
Letter from Native American Ojibwe
400 years after calling for their subjugation, the Vatican was sent letters of thanks from
Native Americans themselves.
One of the Vatican Archives' most unusual documents is an 1887 letter addressed to Pope
Leo XIII from the Ojibwe tribe of Grassy Lake, Ontario.
Written on birch bark, the letter addresses the pope as "the Great Master of Prayer,"
and thanks him for sending a bishop their way.
Although written in the Ojibwe language, the letter was translated into French by the missionary,
who also corrected the date.
Instead of May, the Ojibwe had datelined the document: "where there is much grass, in
the month of flowers."
The Ojibwe, or Chippewa, are among the most numerous and widely distributed Native American
populations, referring to themselves simply as "the people" ("anishinaabe").
While they and many other groups have adopted Christianity, they have also tended to indigenize
it, fusing it with their own belief in "Great Spirit" Giche Manidoo.
4.
The Doctrine of Immaculate Conception
The belief in the Immaculate Conception – that Mary gave birth to Jesus as a virgin, free
of "original sin" – is fundamental to the Catholic faith.
It underpins attitudes of purity, devotion, and grace, and exalts the mother of Christ
as the impossible ideal of Christian femininity.
In many countries, reverence for the Blessed Virgin even borders on idolatry.
So it's surprising to find that Christ's virgin birth wasn't official Catholic doctrine
until well into the mid-nineteenth century.
Pope Pius IX only published the Apostolic Constitution of the Immaculate Conception
in December 1854.
Before this, the faithful weren't bound to accept the dogma as true.
Only now was it said to have come directly from God.
However, there's a slight problem with this: there's apparently no mention whatsoever
of a virgin birth in the Bible.
On the contrary, in Luke 1:47 Mary addresses God as her "savior," implying that she
was just as sinful as the rest of us.
3.
Letter from Pope Pius IX to the President of the Confederate States of America
During the American Civil War, Italy was in much the same state, split between those in
favor of unification (the Piedmontese in the north) and those who were dead set against
it (the Kingdom of Two Sicilies in the south).
Self-styled "Confederate President" Jefferson Davis therefore saw in Pope Pius IX a fellow
victim of northern oppression and a potentially powerful ally.
However, there was one crucial difference: while the conflict in Italy had much wider
political motives than slavery, it was the northern Italians, not the southern, who objected
to its abolition.
Nevertheless, Davis wrote to the besieged Vatican in the 1860s in a bid to forge diplomatic
ties.
Claiming to share the pope's grief at the devastation the Civil War had caused, he stressed
his authority as "President" to lead.
And it came as a pleasant surprise for Davis (and a deeply unpleasant one for Lincoln)
when Pius IX sent a letter back addressing him, in Latin, as the President of the Confederate
States of America and expressing his desire that "America might again enjoy mutual peace
and concord."
Although the pope never explicitly supported Davis's cause, this undoubtedly gave it
a boost.
General Robert E. Lee apparently idolized him for it, declaring Pius IX to be "the
only sovereign … in Europe who recognized our poor Confederacy."
2.
Letter to Genghis Khan's Grandson
For all its worldly influence and wealth, the papacy met its match in the Mongols – at
least in pomposity and hubris.
By the 13th century, having conquered China and overrun Persia, the Mongols were turning
on Europe.
Attacks launched against Christian countries by Ogedei, Genghis Khan's son and successor,
were on the rise and things were looking bleak.
The Mongol horde appeared to be unstoppable.
When Ogedei died, however, the Mongols were brought to a halt.
In accordance with tradition, they were all called back to the capital to decide on a
suitable new leader.
This unique window of opportunity gave Pope Innocent IV a chance to exercise his influence
– or so he thought.
Dispatching an elderly Italian friar on a donkey to intercede on his behalf, he hoped
to save Christendom by rebuking the future Khan with a letter.
This was in brazen contrast to the approach taken by other diplomats, who typically sent
barrels overflowing with silver and gold.
While they were impressed enough by the friar's journey to grant him an audience with the
Khan, he was forced to wait four months before an actual response was forthcoming.
The letter he eventually returned to Rome with, after two and a half years, was not
at all what the pope was expecting.
Addressed directly to Innocent IV, it asserted the divine right of the Grand Khan Guyuk (Genghis
Khan's grandson) to rule the world.
It also ordered the pontiff to come to Asia himself, with all of his kings, and pay homage
in submission to the Mongols.
Otherwise, the letter threatened, he would be considered an enemy.
1.
Transcripts from the Trials of the Knights Templar
For more than 700 years, the Knights Templar have been tarnished by accusations of heresy.
Obscure rumors abound of devil worship, sodomy, usury, and the possession of magical artifacts
– including the Holy Grail, parts of the Cross, and even the Ark of the Covenant.
But for much of the middle ages the Templars were highly respected, even revered.
Having been instrumental in conquering Jerusalem, for instance, they chaperoned pilgrims across
it.
They're also said to have destroyed an army of 26,000 with only 500 men of their own,
amassed a fortune from noble families, and become a key financier behind European monarchs
and their wars.
So where did it all go wrong?
Somewhat surprisingly, it was Philip IV of France, and not the "infidel" Muslims,
who hastened the Templars' demise (though strategic losses in the Holy Land didn't
help).
Heavily in debt to the order, the French king seized upon their decline as an opportunity
to get out of paying them.
Accusing the knights of heresy, he petitioned Pope Clement V to arrest them and put them
to trial.
And, since the pope was under French protection at the time, there was considerable pressure
to do so.
The Chinon parchment, exhibited in 2007 after decades "lost in a drawer," is the detailed,
60-meter transcript of the trials of the Knights Templar between 1307 and 1313.
It lists a range of damning confessions, including treason, idolatry, homosexual "kissing rites,"
and spitting or urinating on the Cross, among other charges dreamt up by the king.
But the transcripts also reveal a softer than previously thought verdict from the pope,
who declared the order not to be heretical but merely immoral.
While this might seem a trivial difference at first glance in canon law it meant the
difference between excommunication and effectively a spiritual pardon.
Of course, they were burned at the stake either way, but it's obvious why the Vatican has
kept quiet.
In the wake of the parchment's exhibition, the Templars' self-styled "heirs" tried
to sue the Church for more than $150 billion — the estimated value of the assets wrongfully
seized by Pope Clement V. These included crown jewels, thousands of estates, and several
entire kingdoms.
Of course, the claimants haven't been able to retrieve any of it – but only because
they've been unable to prove any blood relation to the order (for now at least).

Fortune cookies - Biscotti della fortuna (Valentines Day edition)| Cooking with Giugizu - Duration: 6:21.
>> Hi ya'll and welcome or welcome back to my channel
and welcome back to my kitchen too
In today's video I thought I'd show you how to bake the fortune cookies
the classic chinese cookies with a message inside
I think it's a fun idea that you can use for several occasions
and as Valentines Day is around the corner
mines will be Valentines Day themed
but as you can basically write whatever you want on the message inside
you can use this recipe for different occasions, such as birthdays or even marriage proposals
just set your fantasy free and have fun
The recipe is really simple
the ingredients we'll need are
60 gr of flour,
60 gr of sugar
2 egg whites, a pinch of salt, some vanilla extract
and the messages to put inside
if you are interested on my blog you'll find a template with a few love themed messages
that you can download for free and the lik to my blogpost
is in the downbar
you will also need a cupcake tray to keep the cookies in shape
I said everything so let's get started!
First of all we need to mix together the dry ingredients
which means flour, sugar and salt
the dry ingredients are mixed, now I'm going to beat the eggs whites
and I'll add the vanilla extract too.
Now I'll add the dry ingredients to the egg whites by sifting them
in the mean time I forgot to tell you that I preheated the oven at 190° c
let's mix the ingredients and get our batter ready
the batter is done, now we need to spread it on the baking tray covered in baking paper
and bake the cookies
The cooking time is very short, around 5 minutes
and I suggest you to cook just 2/3 each time beacause
once you'll remove them from the oven you'll have just a few seconds before they harden
to add the message and give them the classic fortune cookies shape
but first of all we need to spread the batter to create 2 circles
the batter is ready to go in the oven
they will cook in maximum 5 minutes
anyway you'll know they are ready when the edges will start to get darker
I remind you that I preheated the oven to 190°c
Ok, I'll be back in 5 minutes
The first cookies are in the muffin tray to keep the shape
if you want you can add in the batter some food coloring to make your cookies more fun
Here are our fortune cookies ready to be handed
if you want you can serve them on a plate, like I'm doing
or you can pack them in a food bag and turn them into an actual Valentines day gift
as usual I hope that you liked this video, if so don't forget to give it a thumbs up, so that I will know it
and if you haven't yet subscribe to my channel in order not to miss any new video
and if you want you can even click on the bell icon to get a notification every time I upload a new video
That's it for today, I send you a huge kiss and I'll see you in my next one, ciao!

Bye!

How to Flat-Tow: F-150 and F-150 Raptor | Ford How-To | Ford - Duration: 2:35.
[MUSIC]
Your Ford truck has a feature that allows you to tow on all four wheels behind an RV
or other vehicle without damaging the transmission and gear box.
Let me tell you how to use it.
To set up flat tow and
towing a F-150, you'll need to do a few things differently.
First, press the Start/Stop button,
if equipped, without pressing the brake pedal.
Next, press the brake pedal, and rotate the four-wheel drive mode selector switch
to 2H, and shift the transmission to neutral.
Once you do,
rotate the four-wheel drive switch from 2H to 4L five times within seven seconds.
You'll then get a message in the instrument cluster indicating that neutral
tow has been enabled and to leave the transmission in neutral.
If you use an ignition key, leave the transmission in neutral and
turn the key as far as it will go toward the off position and leave it there.
To exit out of flat tow mode,
press the Start/Stop button once without pressing the brake pedal.
Then press and hold the brake pedal and shift it out of neutral and into park.
You'll get a message telling you that neutral tow has been disabled.
It's that simple.
To set up flat tow for F-150 Raptor, from inside the truck,
if equipped with the available intelligent access with push button start/stop,
press the start button without pressing the brake pedal.
Once you do, press and hold the brake pedal and
rotate the four-wheel drive switch to 2H and shift the transmission to neutral.
Now, using the steering wheel controls and information display, enable neutral tow
by going to settings, advanced settings, then vehicle, and select neutral tow.
And press and hold the OK button to initialize it.
You'll get a message in the instrument cluster indicating that Neutral Tow
has been enabled, and to leave the transmission in neutral.
Finally, press the Engine Start/Stop button
one more time without pressing the brake pedal.
Keep in mind, if you use an ignition key, leave the transmission in neutral and
turn the ignition switch as far as it will go toward the off position and
leave it there.
To get out of neutral tow mode,
press the Start/Stop button once without pressing the brake pedal.
Once you do, press and hold the brake pedal and
shift it out of neutral and into park.
You'll get a message telling you that neutral tow has been disabled.
One more thing, any time you open and
close the driver's door, you'll get this message in your instrument cluster
to reassure you that the vehicle is in neutral tow mode.
