Canada's Daleman will Use PyeongChang to Rise Again

When Gabrielle Daleman underwent surgery to remove a cyst from her abdomen last year, the Canadian figure skaters Olympic hopes could have disappeared.

But after months of scares and setbacks, the 20-year-old is set to compete at a second Winter Games she considers more significant than ever.

I had no idea what was going to happen this season, Daleman told reporters after practicing at the Gangneung Ice Arena, describing her brutal summer filled with health issues.

This Olympics means more to me than anything because I went from not knowing if Id be able to skate this year to do what Im doing.

Daleman, who finished 17th at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, said the recovery time for the surgery she had in May was usually eight months.

She took only half of that time off.

In recent months, Daleman, who won bronze at last years world championships, has opened up about a plethora of issues she has faced off the ice.

She has a learning disability that causes her trouble with reading and writing, something that led to bullying at an early age.

As a former gymnast, Daleman does not have the stereotypical skating body.

Her muscles bulge.

Her shoulders are broader than the average skaters.

She is strong.

But the pressure of striving for a lithe frame has taken its toll.

Daleman revealed that she has suffered from an eating disorder like the ones that have ended the careers of many female skaters her age.

Not only athletes but a lot of women and a lot of people do struggle with most of the stuff I was struggling with and I still do on a day-to-day basis, Daleman said.

I shouldnt be ashamed to tell people what Ive been through and what Im going through because its life and it brought me to where and who I am today.

Eating disorders have long been an issue in figure skating.

U.S.

skater Gracie Gold announced last year she would be missing the Olympics as she was taking a break to treat psychological issues and an eating disorder.

Sochi team gold medallist Yulia Lipnitskaya, 19, retired from the sport after undergoing treatment for anorexia.

PROGRAMME CHANGES.

The upheaval in Dalemans life has been matched by a shake-up in her free programme.

But the changes, she said, were meant to better reflect her genuine self.

In the midst of the competitive season last autumn, Daleman dropped her long programme with music from the Gladiator movie, a risky move so close to the Olympics.

But that programme, she said, just didnt feel right.

After consulting with her coaches, Daleman decided to revive her long programme from last season, when she skated to George Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue.

To work on freshening up her old free skate, Daleman pulled out of a challenge event going into Canadian national championships and spent a month perfecting her routine.

Her short programme -- which she skates to music from Carmen -- remains untouched.

I couldnt be happier with it, Daleman said of her free skate.

Its just more playful.

Its more me, me personally.

The short is me, Im sassy.

The long is me, Im playful.

It was just what was best for me and what I felt more comfortable..

Daleman did not set any specific goals post-recovery.

In Pyeongchang, she wants to show how far she has come.

Im very happy going into this competition and just showing everyone how hard Ive been working, Daleman said.

Athletes from Romania, US and Canada Arrive at Incheon | PyeongChang 2018 Olympics

The countdown to the 2018 Winter Games is well and truly on, with athletes from all over the world spilling into the arrivals area of Incheon each day, with wide smiles.

Our hardworking Passion Crew (and Soohorang) were on hand to greet them with excitement, making the first moments in Korea for each of these athletes warm and welcoming.

Hello and welcome to all of our new friends.Team CanadaKeri Morrison, Vincent De Haitre and Benjamin Donnelly of Team Canada stopped to smile for some photos and get aquainted with their new friend Soohorang.Team USAMorgan Schild, Troy Murphy, Mitchell Whitmore and Brian Hansen were among some of the latest US arrivals to chat with Passion Crew volunteers at Incheon.

These stars are just a few of the representatives that make up the largest ever US contingent at an Olympic Winter Games event. Team RomaniaSoohorang fits right in with Team Romania.

It looks likes hes ready to compete with Gheorghe Pop, Cornel Pucianu and Marius Ungreanu a challenge during Biathlon.

Our talented mascot could even give Andrei Turea a run for his money in the luge event. Greetings from the Passion CrewKIM Minjeong, one of our dedicated Passion Crew volunteers, shared her experiences of being one of the first Korean people to greet the Olympic athletes.

Although it was my first time meeting lots of athletes and doing interviews, it was a great chance to meet various kinds of people and share our feelings, so I was really grateful and excited. I greeted them as happily as I could.

It was a great pleasure for us to hold this big event.

As well as us volunteers, there were a lot of people waiting to catch a glimpse of the athletes.

I really hope they know how welcome they are. The arrival of the athletes gave life to airport.

Everyone seemed to be enthusiastic, including the security guards.

I felt like their appearance marked the beginning of the Olympic Games.

Many of the interviewed athletes said they would try their best to enjoy the Games experience, no matter what happened.

They seemed not only determined, but also excited.

I felt for a moment, the passion we were feeling.

It was after that experience, that I realized that the Olympics would be starting so soon.As a volunteer, I feel a responsibilitiy to give a good impression of Korea.

When I remember my good memories from abroad, people had always greeted me with a nice smile.

So, with a smiling face, I prepared some short greeting sentences in their own languages.

Though my pronunciation wasn't perfect, Im sure they understood my greetings.

I hope every visitor to PyeongChang has a happy memories that will be remembered for many years..

Bass Players! Go from blues scale BEGINNER to blues scale PRO in 9 minutes - Duration: 8:52.

Hi - I'm Luke McIntosh from becomeabassist.com and in this bass lesson, you're going to

go from blues scale beginner to blues scale pro in less than 10 minutes.

You'll learn the 2 biggest mistakes that beginner bass players make when it comes to

the blues scale and you're also going to learn how you can avoid them and make sure

you don't sound terrible when you use the blues scale on bass!

Now I'm sure you want to sound good when you use the blues scale on bass, right?

Every bass player does!

And the blues scale is one of those sounds that works a lot of the time and it's relatively

easy to get started with.

Unfortunately though, most beginner bass players when they start out using the blues scale

- well they sound like beginners.

And the thing is - it's usually the same mistakes across the board.

So in this lesson, I want to show you these mistakes and how to avoid them so you can

start sounding like a pro when you use the blues scale rather than a total amateur.

Before we get started though, let's just do a quick recap of the blues scale.

The blues scale is exactly like the minor pentatonic scale, but it adds a sharp 4 or flat

5 depending on how you think about it.

So that means you have the root, the minor 3rd, the 4th, the sharp 4/flat 5, regular

5, flat 7 and back up to the root.

In the key of G we have G, B-flat, 10th fret and 13th fret on the A-string, C, C-sharp,

and D - 10th, 11th and 12th fret on the D-string, F and G - 10th and 12th fret on the G-string.

But you could also play it down here if you wanted to as well.

Let's get to the good stuff!

The biggest mistake that I hear beginners make when they come to the blues scale is

smashing the sharp 4/flat 5 without ever resolving it.

When I hear someone do this, it's a immediate signal that they're a beginner.

They might do something like this.

I'll just grab up a practice track - it's just a G blues.

Our sharp 4/flat 5 is this C-sharp right here and a beginner might do something like this.

Or maybe something like this.

Or maybe even this.

This C# is in the scale, right - it 'should' technically work, but when it's played like

this it sounds like crap!

Why is that?

It's because not all notes in the blues scale are created equal!

Some are more equal than others, right?

This sharp 4/flat 5 is going to sound bad if it's just on an island out there by itself,

but that's how so many inexperienced bassists use it.

Hell - even some with a ton of experience make this mistake sometimes.

That note holds a ton of tension and if that tension doesn't get resolved, you're in

a world of sad, sorry disappointment.

It's like when someone hypes up a hilarious joke, gives you the setup and then forgets

the punchline.

It's deeply unsatisfying because there's no release from that tension.

Luckily though, there's a simple fix that will ensure that you never leave your bandmates

or your audience with this terrible feeling inside.

All you have to do is resolve that tension, and there are two basic ways to do it.

You can resolve that note by going down or you can resolve it by going up.

Simple, right?

Let's try to do exactly that and let's start by resolving down.

I'll bring back that practice track.

I'll start by jumping immediately to that C-sharp and then resolve the tension of that

note by just coming down

the scale.

Hear how that tense note now has direction and a resolution of that tension?

It's not just hanging out by itself - it's played within the context of a phrase - a

musical phrase!

You can also do something like this.

This is a super idiomatic blues thing and it sounds great - straight up pulling off

the sharp 4 to the regular 4.

From there you can do whatever you want.

How about next, we try going up and resolving the tension that way.

To do that, all you have to do is play is the 5 above the sharp 4.

You can do this is tons of different ways.

You might go back and forth between them Or you might keep going up that blues scale.

You could also mix and match - use that C-sharp quite a bit, but always putting some other

notes around it to provide context and some resolution from the tension of that note.

See that?

Can you hear how this is completely different from the first example I played?

The first one was all tension, no resolution, it didn't really make sense - it just sounded

plain bad!

On the other hand, the last few examples actually started sounding OK - there was a much more

natural flow to the line and nothing stuck out as being too abrasive.

In short, it was way more musical and it made a ton more sense!

Now the other big mistake that inexperienced improvisers make is ONLY using the blues scale

and nothing else.

This gets super boring really quick and if improvising and playing bass solos is something

you're interested in, then you're going to need to know other sounds, other options,

other scales and modes you can use in addition to the blues scale and also where you can

use each of them.

Now this doesn't have to be difficult.

I've actually made it easy for you with my free guide to the modes that you can download

from the link in the description of this video.

In the guide, you'll learn how the modes are made without overcomplicating anything.

You're not going to come away from it more confused than when you started, and it will

tell you exactly where and how to use all of the modes.

It'll clear up a lot of the confusion that can surround them and make it super clear

on exactly how to use them.

Once again, it's completely free and I want you to have it, so just click on the link

in the description, sign up on that page and I'll send it straight to your inbox.

To recap really quickly though, you learned that one of the biggest mistakes that inexperienced

bassists make with the blues scale is playing the sharp 4 WAY too much.

You learned how to avoid this though through resolving the tension of that note by either

taking it up or bringing it down.

Give each one a try and I'm sure you'll notice an immediate difference.

Thanks so much for watching - I really appreciate it.

The Best Cheap Mac & Cheese in NYC || Operation $5 Lunch - Duration: 7:14.

- My name is Prez, and I work at Thrillist.

Around these parts, I'm known as

the 5 Dollar Lunch Guy.

Every episode, I'm gonna put you guys

onto the very finest New York grub

for $5 or less.

- Yeah. - I didn't know that.

- Yeah. - So I can technically be

making my own pasta right now.

- Yeah, you don't even need the machine.

- (gasps) What?

And the mission?

Bam!

Mac & cheese.

How much do you love mac & cheese?

I love mac & cheese.

Yes!

Now let me be clear, mac & cheese

is one of the few foods that I am deeply passionate about.

But, to find really good mac & cheese

in this city for under five bucks

that's not just Plain Jane?

That's gonna be difficult.

Yo, Mack.

- There are a ton of places

where you can get mac & cheese in the city

that's pretty good, but for five bucks?

There's only one place I can think of:

Wilma Jean's.

It's quality.

- Oh, wow, dude.

That is high praise coming from you.

We gotta check this place out.

Now normally if you say mac & cheese,

we'd be on our way to traditional soul food spots

in Harlem and Bed-Stuy.

But, apparently, these guys are the real deal.

Not only did Thrillist say that they had

the best fried chicken in the city

a few years ago, but on top of that,

they also had the best mac & cheese.

It's five bucks somewhere.

So these are the rules of "Operation 5 Buck Lunch."

It's gotta be good, 'cause nobody wants bad food for lunch.

No big chains, 'cause that's just too easy.

It's gotta be $5 or less,

and whatever I don't use today

rolls over into the next episode.

(upbeat techno music)

(camera snapping)

(upbeat techno music continues)

OK, so Robert, I'm gonna ask you

the most important question

that you've probably been asked all day.

- All right.

- How much do you love mac & cheese?

- My kids love it -- I like it all right.

- How much do you love mac & cheese?

- A lot, especially if it's baked.

- Probably one of the staple foods in my diet.

- Oh, man!

Are you like a Kraft Mac & Cheese kind of person

or do you like homemade stuff?

- Definitely homemade.

- Homemade?

- How do you do yours?

- My wife cooks it.

- Your wife does it?

And does she do anything that's maybe different?

- Uh, extra cheese.

- Extra cheese. - Extra cheese.

Gotta have extra cheese.

- What makes a good mac & cheese?

- Really creamy.

I'll add like a little bit of milk to it

to make it nice and creamy.

- Nice and delicate and stuff.

Do you like a crust on top?

- Yes.

Like a nice, cheese in it, cheese on top of it.

- Cheese on top.

- It's like such a comfort food, you know?

It's great.

- There you go.

Everyone loves mac & cheese.

Unless you're some kind of psycho.

Chatting to people, you quickly find out

whether you're having it for Thanksgiving,

at a soul food restaurant, or just the regular

blue box mac & cheese that you made for yourself as a kid,

mac & cheese is the quintessential American comfort food.

Fun fact, the current record for speed eating

a box of mac & cheese is currently held by

Joseph Balikowski from Jackson, Michigan.

The man has eaten a single box

in around 30 seconds, which is kind of impressive,

but when you think about it, I've inhaled boxes

of mac & cheese in less time, so --

I'm coming for that record, Joe -- watch out.

Hey, here we are, Smith and Carroll,

Wilma Jean, yo.

I am super pumped for this mac & cheese,

I have been waiting for this since they gave me the mission,

let's go do it.

Hey, what's your name?

- [Luke] Luke. - [Prez] Luke, Prez.

Nice to meet you. How you doing?

- [Luke] Nice to meet you.

I'm all right.

- So, is this your first time here?

- No.

- What do you normally get?

- I get the scallion pancake sandwich,

the fried chicken, and then today I had the iceberg salad

with the fried chicken.

Their chicken's really good.

- Have you ever tried the mac & cheese?

- I have tried the mac & cheese before,

it's delicious.

The noodles are right, the cheese sauce is perfect.

- OK.

This place is kind of swanky.

It's like kinda has a little bit of a rustic feel.

- [Waitress] Hi, how are you?

- I'm great, um, so, this is my first time here.

What is Wilma Jean's?

- So Wilma Jean's is... the owner is Rob Newton,

and it's the name of his grandmother.

And so yeah, a lot of this is like,

inspired by what he ate growing up

with his grandma.

- Yeah, but I mean, that's usually the best food, right?

- Yeah, it's always the best food.

- There you go, exactly.

So I'm here on a $5 mission

to try your mac & cheese.

What can you tell me about your mac & cheese here?

- I mean, it's great with everything Rob makes.

- So, I'm gonna get the mac & cheese, please.

- You got it.

- Thank you so much, appreciate it.

- Yeah.

One mac & cheese.

- Ooh, thank you so much.

- You're welcome.

- Man, guys, look at this.

This is beautiful.

Straight away we have a nice crust,

it's a breaded crust, so it's not a cheese crust,

I did get a little taste of it just then,

but let me be sure.

It's not a cheese, it's not like a flaked cheese

or a baked cheese.

And then looking at these noodles,

like, you know, of course, they're perfectly done.

You get a little bit of heat from the black pepper.

Mm, I apologize, I'm a pig.

(upbeat music)

Uh, it's a nice kind of like, medium-sharp white Cheddar

and these bread crumbs add a lot of texture to it.

So it's perfect in my opinion.

Oh wow.

It's like the best version of a mac & cheese

you can possibly get.

And there's a reason that they were ranked

as one of the better mac and cheeses in New York.

Like, this is fantastic, like.

You know it's fresh when you burn the crap outta your mouth.

Mm, delicious.

Like, this roux is perfect.

A little bit of extra butter in this roux,

to add a bit of richness to it,

like it's a little bit extra rich.

All you people out there, you know who you are,

come have this.

Oh, oh man.

I am so sad I just finished this.

(bleep)

Mm, hold on, I need to eat this for real.

It's that good.

Ooh.

You know a quality mac when it puts you

to sleep right after, like I am struggling

to like, I want to sleep so bad.

Hey!

- Hey there.

- Hi, how much, is that?

- Thank you. - Thank you.

- Oh OK, so it's, not bad guys, $5.44,

so well in our budget, here you go.

Thank you.

And we got a little over.

Today has been my favorite mission, mac & cheese.

Now, talking to people, we learned that

no matter how you like your mac,

whether you like it with a little twist,

how you bake it, or you get it in a box,

mac & cheese is one of the foods

that bonds us across all ages, I mean,

I've been eating since I was a kid,

I know you're eating it right now watching this.

Today has been an absolute success.

It was in budget, used a little roll over,

it's not a big chain, and it was damn good.

So, see you later.

(camera snapping)

(upbeat techno music)

Yo, what's going on, it is your 5 Dollar Lunch Boy, Prez.

Thank you so much for watching my show,

if you have a suggestion of where we should go next time

leave it in the comments below.

I'll see you guys later.

Pacific Hosts First 'Three Minute Thesis' Competition - Duration: 2:12.

Tonight is a first for graduate students at University of the Pacific in Stockton,

the Three Minute Thesis competition. The three-minute thesis is a competition

where students present their research to a lay audience. They have three minutes

exactly, and one static PowerPoint slide, so no animations, no gimmicks and it's

meant for students to really practice their abilities to communicate their

research to a wider audience. 14 graduate students from a variety of disciplines

participated, competing to win cash prizes and the chance to present their

thesis at a national conference in Las Vegas. The student presentations were

evaluated by a panel of judges that included faculty members, fellow students

and community leaders like the mayor of Stockton. Great job, congratulations I'm

so proud it's one thing to do very compelling a difficult research that's

another thing to do that and convey it in a way that's clear, compelling.

You have three minutes to do it even though you've just been the last

year at least, focus on it, so I'm just blown away and amazed and you could do a lot

to teach politicians like me and others public speaking and conciseness so thank you.

The delivery of the speeches was excellent. The topics were serious of

major significance and impact. I thought it was just an extraordinary performance

on the part of everyone. I presented about the importance of social skills

and how, when students have a hard time paying attention, sometimes that can

impact their social skills and we found that it definitely does. Everyone did an

amazing job and living in our little worlds of grad school it's so awesome to

hear about different worlds of grad school at different topics and they all

are so knowledgeable and they're gonna do great work with the research.

As a graduate student you spend hours, days, years developing your thesis your

argument, pinpointing it down and be able to take an 80 page document into

a three minute speech is a really unique challenge, so I think it's definitely

something the University Pacific should continue to do. Today I'm really glad

that we had such a good turnout and our graduate students are really great in

presenting their thesis or dissertation in three minutes.

I'll do my very best to represent Pacific in Las Vegas.

Welcome Advising Video 2018 - Duration: 1:03.

Hey guys!

Welcome to the spring 2018 Advising Lab.

My name is Jennifer Wayne and I am a sophomore here at Stetson University.

Not so long ago I was a freshman too, having just completed my first semester of college.

It was an incredible experience, where I had to learn how to live on my own and make a

life for myself here.

At the end of my first semester, there was just so much that changed for me to reflect

upon.

By sitting down and thinking through what worked for me and what didn't in that time,

I was able to make a plan and develop goals for me to accomplish in the long run here

at Stetson.

These are the tools that you will encounter in this lab, which will help better prepare

you for you following semesters.

To begin this advising lab, you will need to complete the various assignments, which

you can find located under the "tabs" section on the left-hand side of your screen.

If you encounter any problems or difficulties with these exercises, please contact the Academic

Advising office.

I wish you the best in your semester to come.

Thanks for listening!

Faculty Feature: Wendy Melillo Farrill - Duration: 1:59.

You could say I question authority which is why I became a journalist in my life

because I like figuring out how things work. Probably the most interesting and

exciting job I ever held the one that gives you the adrenaline rush if you

will which I encourage students to always think about when they're looking

for the career, like what gives you that adrenaline rush, is when I covered night

cops for the Washington Post. Success inside the classroom is the aha moment

when a student realizes that not only are they engaging with the material in a

serious way but they're having fun while they're doing it. I come into a classroom

and I feel like part of it is performance art so glittery jewelry

bright prints maybe even props at times. We need to figure out a way to bring

back the fun into learning because somewhere along the line we've lost that

and I also define success outside of the classroom when they can take that

passion and fun for learning and apply it to their career. To see how this

university has evolved over time, watching how the School of Communication

has grown, was a wonderful experience to have I am very much committed to this

place I have a lot of fun here and I hope to share the fun that I have here

with my students.

Dog needs a Home - Duration: 1:53.

Pit Bulls get such a bad rap.

They are probably the most loving, loyal dogs out

there, but very bad people have used them for very bad

things.

We received a call in August, and she said,

"Oh, my gosh, a dog has just been pushed out of a car

in Tampa.

We've called a rescue.

They're all full.

We're afraid to have her go to the animal shelter in

Hillsborough.

They'll probably put her to sleep."

So I said

that my husband and I would help her and take

her in.

The dog was probably part of a fighting ring

and either was not successful with that,

because she was covered with scars.

She had given

birth recently.

So they probably got her pregnant,

took the puppies, and then just got rid of the dog when

they were no longer of use to them.

She loves people,

but she's reactive to any other living creature.

Hopefully we'll be able to train some of that reactive

prey mentality out of her so that she will be a lot

more adoptable.

But she was lunging after other

dogs and barking.

And then we did a pairing, an

associational cue.

Whenever a dog is around, you get

rewarded, you get praise, you get a treat, you get your

toy.

So she learns that distinction.

She's got all

commands, hand signals and voice commands for sit,

down, stay, wait, come, heel, off, leave it.

She's a

love.

She's a great dog.

She's -- you know, she would

make somebody a wonderful pet.

She has a great long

life and is happy and can teach us, as two-legged

animals, unconditional love, living in the moment,

things that we learn best from dogs.

We're just asking for a family

that doesn't have small children.

She can work with

another animal if they have the time and patience.

Definitely a home with a fenced-in yard.

She's

available immediately.
