White House 'fully expects' talks with North Korea to go ahead... but no contact so far - Duration: 2:26.

The White House has stated that it 'fully expects' the potentially historic talks with

North Korea to go ahead... if the regime sticks to its promises.

But the U.S. Secretary of State has also revealed that so far Washington has had no contact

with Pyongyang.

Kwon Jang-ho has this report.

The White House brushed away any concerns on Monday over whether the unprecedented talks

between the U.S. and North Korean leaders will be able to take place, and said that

preparations are underway.

White House Spokesperson Sarah Sanders explained that as long as Pyongyang keeps up its end

of the bargain, the talks will go ahead.

"Look, we fully expect that it will.

The offer was made and we've accepted.

North Korea made several promises and we hope that they will stick to those promises and

if so the meeting will go on as planned."

However, U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, who is currently on a diplomatic tour of African

countries, revealed that so far there has been no direct contact with Pyongyang over

the talks.

"There will be, several steps will be necessary to agree on a location, agree on the scope

of those discussions, it's very early stages, we've not heard anything directly from North

Korea although we expect to hear something directly from them."

Meanwhile, the National Security Advisor, H.R. McMaster briefed the United Nations Security

Council on Washington's plans for the talks.

He stressed that throughout this process the international community needs to continue

to maintain pressure on the North Korean regime.

"We all, we all agreed that we're optimistic about this opportunity but we're determined.

We're determined to keep up the campaign of maximum pressure until we see words matched

with deeds and real progress toward denuclearization."

However, at a separate UN meeting on Monday, the UN Human Rights Council said that although

the upcoming talks could be a historic occasion, they also urged all parties that

North Korea's human rights record must be remembered and discussed with the regime.

"My main message today is that any advancement on the security dialogue should be accompanied

by a parallel expansion on the human rights dialogue."

Kwon Jang-ho, Arirang News.

Prosecutors get ready to grill ex-President Lee Myung-bak - Duration: 2:16.

It's a critical week in the prosecution's investigation into ex-President Lee Myung-bak.

The former conservative leader finds himself in hot water related to numerous charges...

as prosecutors appear to have built a strong case against him.

The latest twist in the intrigue comes on Wednesday as Lee has been subpoenaed for questioning

for the first time.

Lee Seung-jae reports.

With five months of intense investigations under their belt,... the Seoul Central District

Prosecutors' Office has subpoenaed former President Lee Myung-bak to appear at the office

on Wednesday for interrogation as a suspect.

The 76-year-old is facing nearly 20 charges, including violation of law on the management

of presidential records and violations related to election law.

Lee is suspected of receiving some ten-point-three million U.S. dollars in illegal funds from

the state intelligence agency, individuals and businesses, including Korea's largest

conglomerate, Samsung.

Under the Act of Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes,... anyone found guilty of

receiving bribes in excess of 90-thousand dollars can face at least ten years behind

bars.

The former President says he was not aware of any money transfers,... and he has labeled

the prosecution's probe is an act of "political revenge" by the Moon Jae-in administration.

Investigators have also unearthed evidence that Lee is the real owner of DAS, a corruption-ridden

car parts manufacturer,... with the prosecution set to ask him about irregularities in the

company's accounts,... including slush funds totaling more than 28 million dollars.

Prosecutors believe a significant portion of the secret funds were used to finance Lee's

presidential campaign in 2007.

Prosecutors are also likely to grill Lee over presidential records,... which were found

in storage at DAS offices,... and not at the National Archives as required by law,... and

allegations he evaded tax by holding property and savings under borrowed names.

With the long list of charges and allegations,... the nation awaits the results of the questioning,...

which gets underway on Wednesday morning, but could continue deep into the night.

The U.S. is yet to give guidelines on the exact procedure for exemptions on steel and

aluminum import tariffs.

President Trump signed off on his tariff proposals last week, saying there will be exemptions

if countries can show ways to reduce the security threat to the U.S.

But the White House hasn't produced any clear guidelines on these exemptions.

Currently, Canada and Mexico have temporary exemptions and Australia is also expected

to be exempt, but other countries will see tariffs take effect if they don't get exemptions

by March 23rd.

South Korea is working on getting exemptions, with Seoul's Trade Minister travelling to

Washington for the third time in less than a month to meet with U.S. policymakers.

S. Korean President Moon leads overtures of dialogue with N. Korea - Duration: 3:41.

As President Moon Jae-in leads the overtures of dialogue with North Korea, his key officials

have been traveling across borders to bring regional powers on board.

We have our chief Blue House correspondent Moon Connyoung live on the line for us.

Connyoung,

Right.

South Korean president's National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong and National

Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon are on a whistle-stop tour of the U.S., China, Japan,

and Russia to brief leaders their trip to North Korea early last week.

It's part of President Moon's efforts to bring these jittery powers on board the South Korea-initiated

overture of talks with North Korea.

China and Japan have, and for good reason, been showing fear of being left out of this

entire process.

South Korea's intel chief, Suh Hoon flew to Japan yesterday to brief Japanese Prime Minister

Shinzo Abe on his trip to North Korea, the U.S., and progress on the talks.

Suh met with Mr. Abe just moments ago...where the Japanese prime minister said that while

he welcomes dialogue with North Korea on the premise of denuclearization...

Japan needs for the North to take "concrete" actions.

Seoul's NIS director highlighted the importance of South Korea, Japan cooperation in taking

the PyeongChang Olympic-initiated detente forward.

The meeting is currently underway so we have yet to find out the details from that session...

but yesterday when Seoul's intel chief met with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono,

he said Japan would work closely with Seoul and Washington and referred to the situation

a near "miracle."

President Moon's National Security Adviser, on the other hand, was in China and sat down

with a number of high-level Chinese officials including President Xi Jinping.

Well, President Moon's chief security adviser and chief envoy who led the South Korean delegation

to the North early last week... sat down with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing for

35 minutes on Monday... during which President Moon's chief envoy

praised the role of China and President Xi in nudging North Korea toward denuclearization

and getting Pyongyang and Washington to agree to talks.

The Chinese leader told the South Korean official that China is "on the same page" with Seoul

and that he hopes for a smooth inter-Korean summit while giving credit to the South for

great progress in getting North Korea and the U.S. to agree to dialogue.

China, which appears to have been left on the sidelines as South Korea orchestrated

the rapprochement with the North... is feeling a wave of anxiety on prospects that it may

not have a seat at the table if new negotiations involving North Korea are launched.

Mr. Moon is aware of this...

AND the fact that the North Korean nuclear issue involves geopolitical and regional security

and China naturally should take an active part in it.

And, knowing this... the South Korean president is trying to keep Beijing in the loop as things

progress in the next two months.

Russia, of course, is also a highly influential power in the region and a member of the now-stalled

six party denuclearization talks.

Chung took off for Moscow just minutes ago... he's expected to meet with key officials there

and detail the situation as well as how the two summit talks were agreed upon... when

he lands in Russia later in the afternoon.

round robin match against Switzerland this evening.

That's it from me for now but I'll be back with more updates on the Paralympic Games

With that let's look at the medal table as of now.

UN CEDAW recommends South Korea to take action on under-reporting of sexual violence due to stigma - Duration: 1:29.

While the MeToo movement continues to sweep across the country,... the UN Committee on

the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has provided recommendations for South

Korea's under-reporting of sexual violence.

Kim Hyo-sun tells us more.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women has called for the South Korean

government to take action against the under-reporting of sexual violence due to stigma.

The recommendation was made as the committee held its 69th session to review women's rights

in eight countries, including South Korea.

The committee also showed concerns over the country's defamation law,... which discourages

victims of sexual assault from filing complaints against the perpetrators,... as they may be

counter-sued for defamation.

It also pointed to the lack of punishment for perpetrators,... explaining that only

83 cases of workplace sexual assault received punishment out of the more than 16-hundred

cases reported from 2012 to 2015.

Meanwhile,... the British daily The Telegraph has reported on the backlash against the MeToo

movement that has been sweeping across South Korea.

It said the recent suicide of actor Jo Min-ki, who was accused of sexual assault, triggered

a backlash against the movement,... with critics saying it's turning into a witch hunt that

promotes prejudice against men.

Kim Hyo-sun, Arirang News.
