Rain lets up from the west, cooler temperatures ahead _ 031518 - Duration: 2:16.

Korea is seeing much needed rain across the nation.

Seoul will see showers until the mid afternoon while the rest of the country will see rain

lingering into the evening... but many eastern regions could see rain until Friday.

And mountainous parts of Gangwon-do Province could see some snow tonight.

This band of rain will bring temperatures back to the seasonal average.

We shouldn't expect to see highs in early twenties like yesterday until early May,...

rather we could see lows going down to lower single digits.

For now, here are the readings for Thursday.

Seoul will get up to 14 degrees, but it could feel a bit cooler than this morning.

Busan and Jeju will hit 16 and 19 degrees.

With that, let's take a look at the international weather for viewers around the world.

Just as most regions in South Korea will have rain to ease the drought, many parts of North

Korea will also see rain... or even snow further up north.

As for the rest of Asia, those of you in Tokyo will need to brace yourselves for strong winds

during the evening commute.

Meanwhile, Port Moresby will get a break from the showers on Thursday under partly cloudy

skies.

Heading to North America, New Yorkers might have started to think that this winter would

never end.

Yet another nor'easter could make its way toward the city next week and strike on the

first day of spring.

As for South America, most parts will have warm weather, with some scorching highs under

mostly sunny skies.

Taking you to Europe,.. those in Madrid will have much cooler temperatures than the seasonal

average so dress accordingly

Lastly to Africa, Addis Ababa and Algiers will have a rainy Thursday.

Conservative TV commentator Larry Kudlow named Trump's top economic adviser - Duration: 1:38.

U.S. President Donald Trump has named conservative economist Larry Kudlow as his new top economic

adviser.

It's left to be seen how Kudlow,... who advocates free trade,... will impact Trump's tariff

plans.

And as President Trump continues his trade war narrative,... the EU is urging him to

engage in trade talks, not trade war.

Kim Hyo-sun tells us more.

CNBC television commentator Larry Kudlow will become the Director of the National Economic

Council,... replacing Gary Cohn,... who resigned after opposing President Trump's decision

to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

The conservative economist, who also served as an advisor to the Reagan administration,

is a supporter of free trade.

Therefore,...

U.S. media is speculating that he could clash with President Trump over tariffs and trade

deals.

Meanwhile,... Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to say that Washington will not turn a blind

eye to unfair trade practices,... a message that could be aimed at many U.S. allies, including

South Korea and the European Union, for going against his tariff increase,... and even reviewing

whether to file complaints to the World Trade Organization.

As President Trump continues his trade war narrative,... the EU is urging Washington

to revive trade talks rather than initiating a trade war.

It strongly criticized his decision to impose tariffs,... saying it undermines longstanding

trans-Atlantic ties,... and added that the economic bloc is preparing potential countermeasures

against American goods.

South Korea, U.S. mark sixth anniversary of KORUS FTA - Duration: 2:13.

Seoul and Washington signed their bilateral trade deal in 2007,... which went into effect

in 2012.

Today marks six years since the FTA was adopted.

Taking a look at the numbers for us... is our Kim Hyesung.

It's been exactly six years since the South Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement entered into

force on March 15th, 2012.

According to Seoul's Trade Ministry, bilateral trade has increased steadily, amounting to

119-point-three billion U.S. dollars in 2017, up nearly nine percent on-year.

The U.S. remains South Korea's second largest exporting country after China, accounting

for over eleven percent of the country's total trade last year.

Exports to the U.S. amounted to 68-point-six billion dollars, led by petrochemical goods,

computers and steel pipes, but Korea's top three exporting goods like vehicles and wireless

devices dropped compared to the previous year.

Korea is the U.S.'s sixth largest trading partner.

Imports from the U.S. increased over 17 percent on-year amounting to 50-point-seven billion

dollars in 2017, led by goods like semiconductor manufacturing equipment, LPG and meat.

Since the trade deal went into effect in 2012, annual trade growth between the two countries

recorded two-point-eight percent.

Korea's trade surplus with the U.S. increased for four years from the establishment of the

FTA but started to decrease from 2016.

In 2017, trade surplus slumped by over 23 percent on-year.

As for services trade, it recorded 43-point-two billion dollars in 2016, similar to 2015,

and Korea recorded a service trade deficit of nearly 14 billion dollars, mainly on intellectual

property.

But with President Trump threatening to revise or withdraw from the FTA last year, complaining

about the trade deficit, the two countries launched talks earlier this year about a possible

amendment to the deal.

The third round of talks is scheduled to be held in Washington on Thursday local time.

South Korean firms still struggling one year on from start of THAAD retaliation - Duration: 2:39.

Today -- March 15th -- marks one year since China started taking economic retaliation

against South Korea for Seoul's decision to deploy a U.S. missile defense system in the

country.

The ban was lifted late last year,... but South Korea's tourism market and South Korean

companies operating in China are still feeling the pinch.

Lee Seung-jae reports.

March 15th marks one year since Beijing imposed retaliatory measures on South Korean goods

and tourism,... after Seoul deployed the U.S. THAAD missile defense system to better cope

with North Korea's missile and nuclear threats.

Since President Moon Jae-in took office in May last year, the South Korean government

has been urging its biggest trading partner to stop its economic retaliation.

And in October of last year, the two countries agreed to get their relations back on track,...

with President Moon making a state visit to Beijing for a summit with Chinese President

Xi Jinping in December.

Despite the improved ties between the two nations,... there's been little sign of a

breakthrough.

Among the most heavily impacted firms is Lotte Group -- its chemical unit has seen one of

its offices in China shut and sitting idle for a year.

And since chemical and retail are Lotte's biggest moneyspinners,... it's a huge blow

to the nation's fifth-largest conglomerate,... which also saw 87 of its 99 Lotte Mart stores

across China suspend operations last year,... after the firm offered its golf course in

Seongju, to be used as the site for the THAAD battery.

South Korea's tourism sector has also taken a huge hit.

According to the Korea Tourism Organization, the number of inbound Chinese tourists fell

by more than 48 percent compared to 2016.

From March to December 2016,... the number of Chinese tourists to South Korea was close

to seven million,... but from March to December of 2017 it barely surpassed three million.

This also contributed to the drop in the overall number of foreigners who visited South Korea,...

down 22-point-percent from a year earlier.

The fall in tourism also impacted duty-free stores,... despite sales reaching an all-time

high last year.

Small-scale Chinese traders increased duty-free sales growth,... but discount sales due to

competition led to an almost 88 percent drop in profits for Lotte Duty Free and more than

25 percent decrease for Shilla Duty Free.

But with improved ties with China,... and the spring season having arrived in South

Korea,... the country hopes to see Chinese tourists return to boost the tourism market,

once again.

Fmr. president Lee Myung-bak heads home after 21 hours at prosecution complex - Duration: 2:32.

We start with the one story dominating the news today... and it revolves around the man

known simply as "MB" to Koreans.

Prosecutors have wrapped up their questioning of former president Lee Myung-bak on a slew

of corruption and bribery allegations.

It's now a nervous wait for the ex-leader as it seems almost certain the prosecution

will seek a warrant for his arrest given the mountain of evidence they've built up against

him.

Oh Jung-hee reports.

After 21 hours at the prosecution complex,... former President Lee Myung-bak headed out

of the building early Thursday morning.

On his way out,... he didn't make any special remarks to the press,... but left a brief

good-bye to prosecution officials.

"Thank you for the hard work."

The former president arrived at the prosecutors' office Wednesday morning, a little before

9:30 a.m.,... and the interrogation began at around ten.

It lasted for 14 hours and ended just before midnight,... but Lee had to wait several more

hours for prosecutors to review the interrogation record.

He faces around 20 allegations including bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.

Lee was questioned on the auto parts manufacturing company DAS,... through which, prosecutors

say, Lee created slush funds,... and which he allegedly holds the largest stake in...

under false names.

Lee was also asked about using state power for a lawsuit in the U.S. that involved DAS,...

and about receiving money from Samsung for that lawsuit,... as well as him and his aides

receiving illicit money from the nation's intelligence agency and other businesses.

According to the prosecutors, Lee seemed perplexed and surprised when they showed him specific

pieces of evidence on his charges.

But, he still denied most of the allegations,... and prosecutors say there's basically no single

allegation Lee admits to being guilty of.

His answers during the questioning were mostly "I don't know" or "my officials or aides must

have done it."

Prosecutors do not plan on calling him in again... because Lee is a former president.

"Considering that Lee denies all the allegations and so, could try to destroy evidence,...

there's a greater voice within the prosecution... that an arrest warrant has to be sought for

the former president.

It's expected... that the decision could be made in the coming days, possibly even before

the weekend.

Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News."

Passion for 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics and improving awareness of people with disabilities - Duration: 2:32.

The Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympics has been the biggest Winter Paralympics to date,...

and has been changing visitors' perceptions of disability.

Our Cha Sang-mi is in Pyeongchang to listen to what people there had to say about the

global sporting event.

Following the successful hosting of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the spotlight is now on the

Paralympics, already considered the biggest ever to date.

The International Paralympic Committee said ticket sales for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter

Paralympics have set a new record, with over 320-thousand tickets sold as of March 13.

The figure is more than the number of tickets recorded at the Sochi Paralympics four years

ago, and almost twice the number of tickets sold during the 2006 Paralympics in Turin.

"With a new record number of tickets sold, thousands of visitors are here for the Paralympics,

and some say their awareness of people with disabilities has changed after watching the

Games."

"I used to think of this event as a special event for people with disabilities, but I

realized that I was wrong.

These are superb athletes, and their will and strength already make them winners."

"I think the Paralympians are so cool.

I can't help but feel great respect for them, as they compete in such difficult sports despite

their disabilities."

There are still many obstacles and stereotypes to overcome, but the changes are evident.

"People with disabilities are still biased, but I believe the Paralympics serve to such

goal, to break down stereotypes and raise awareness of their potential.

"

"Yes, a lot of awareness has been raised on the Paralympic games and the athletes since

the 1988 Paralympics, but there is still more to be done."

And for some, the PyeongChang Paralympics is an event that has transcended barriers

and set a new standard.

"It's been amazing, the Koreans have put on a really good situation for all the guests

and my daughter just have won a golden medal, so that's pretty awesome "

PyeongChang 2018 is not only the first Olympic event that Korea hosts in 30 years, but it

is also the result of how sports, culture and society have grown together to offer a

platform and an arena for those who have never given up.

Cha Sang-mi, Arirang News, PyeongChang.
