Have you ever wondered what goes through the mind of someone who visits your blog?
You might be wondering... Do people find my site easy to navigate? Is it loading
properly for visitors? And does it actually look visually appealing? All of
those are valid questions you might be asking yourself, especially if you're a
newer blogger. And these are important things to address if you want to make
sure your site gives visitors a great first impression. To help you polish your
site, I am sharing a few tips for a user-friendly blog. That way, you don't have to
worry about scaring people away anymore.
Hey, everyone! Welcome back to my channel. If you're new here, I'm Rachel, the
founder of Define Your Hustle. Define Your Hustle is all about helping
aspiring, creative entrepreneurs build successful and fulfilling online
businesses. And today, we are going to make your blog more impressive to
visitors of your website. So, let's go ahead and dive into the tips. These six
tips are all incredibly easy things you can start correcting today. After all,
this is one task you don't want to keep putting off. Tip number one is to be
mobile friendly. Nowadays, so many of us are consuming content on our phones or
our tablets and it actually gets pretty frustrating when you try to visit your
favorite web site and find out that it's not mobile-friendly. As of April 21st,
2015, Google started factoring in whether or not your site was mobile-friendly
when ranking your content in search engines. That means mobile sites are
favored over the ones that aren't. If you haven't already, you really should check
to see if your site is mobile-friendly. If it's not, make the necessary changes
to correct it. Everything from reading blog posts to the checkout process
should be easy on mobile devices. Even better? Test it out for yourself on all
of the devices you have. My second tip is to make your blog posts easy to scan. I
hate to break it to you, but people most likely aren't reading every word of your
blog posts. They're typically skimming to get the content they want and then
they're going on their way. So, you should really make it easy for readers by
writing shorter paragraphs, adding visuals, using headings, and including
bulleted and numbered lists when it's appropriate. Tip number three
is to add a search box. Let me tell you, this is my biggest pet peeve when it
comes to blogs. If I visit your site and I want to see if you happen to have a
post on a specific topic, having a search box is how I'm going to find it. If you
don't have one, you're basically forcing people to go digging through the
archives to find the content they're looking for. And they're not going to be
bothered with that. Include a search box in a prominent location, like your
sidebar or on the footer of your site. Your readers are gonna thank you for it.
Plus, you can actually see what people are searching while they're on your site,
which can help you discover new blog post ideas. And who doesn't love that? Tip
number four is to make sure your content is shareable. I mean, is there anything
better than seeing readers share your content all over social media? As a blogger,
the answer to that is probably no. It's nice when other people spread the word
about your work, however they're not gonna be bothered to do it if you don't
make it easy for them. And we're all about having a user-friendly blog, right?
Luckily, there are a number of ways you can do this and make it easier for them
to share. One way is to include social sharing buttons on every blog post so
they can share with just a few simple clicks. You can also add Pinterest to
those sharing buttons or include a "Pin It" button that appears whenever they
hover on your images. Another great tip is to incorporate Click to Tweet buttons
to encourage sharing on Twitter. This also allows you to customize the text
that goes out. Tip number five is to go easy on the ads. I know you want to make
money on your blog, but that really doesn't mean you need to fill every bit
of white space with an advertisement. It looks cluttered and it slows down the
loading page of your site. That's not good. Instead, you need to use ads
sparingly. Choose a few key locations for placing advertisements and stick to them
and only them. This will prevent you from going overboard. And finally, my sixth tip
for a user-friendly blog is to get rid of those CAPTCHAs. Is there anything more
annoying than having to get past those illegible CAPTCHAs to leave a comment?
Probably not. They're frustrating and they're deterring people from leaving
comments on your site. And let me tell you, I haven't had a single blogger tell
me that they actually like using them because they
hate filling them out themselves. So, why would they want them on their blog? Quit
relying on those CAPTCHAs to keep the spammers out. Just get smart about your
commenting system. Those of you on WordPress, the Akismet plug-in is really
effective at reducing spam. Could you use some help making your blog shine? I
created my course, Blogging Bombshell, specifically to help new bloggers stand
