Hi, it's Jacob Karhu
And it's been quite a long time I practise Bushcraft
An english word not well known in France
But our grand parents knew it very well
And nowadays, townsfolk
try to get closer to nature
by this way
So in this video I'll explain to you
what is the bushcraft ?
The origin is from New-Zealand and South-Africa
where people
living in the bush
used skills to live in the wilderness
that literally means
art from the bush
but today, bushcraft means
learning a pacific way of life in the wilderness
thanks to more or less old skills
to achieve it.
Roughly, it's making with nature
using your hands
So you gonna say, it's like scoutism,
camping, or survival !
it's close, but it's not exactly the same
I'll show you what we like to do
As all nature lover,
we like to walk and orientate in the forest
to discover some beauties
During day, as well as night
There is nothing more relaxing than a little sleep
among trees
This is the reason why we build natural shelters
using dead wood
and everything nearby
let it be dead leaves
pine branches if a tree has fallen down
or trees barks
When there is too few ressources, or during a bivouac
we prefer the hammock
or a simple tarpaulin that we called "tarp"
It's useful because it's light
simple, and close to our environment
then, we like to use our tools
as the saw, the knife, or the axe
and so on, in good safety
It allows us to build things
with what nature gives us
We prefer dead wood
to not impact too much our environment
So we got our tableware
chops
furniture
and all our little confort
what could we do without a fire ?
It exists thousands of methods for lighting a fire
the most famous are fire friction
and percussion fire
once the area safe
two pieces of wood rubbed the one against the other will produce an ember
put in a tinder
you only have to blow gently
to obtain the first flame
percussion fire works by hitting
hardened steel against a flint
sparks will be received by a mushroom
the amadouvier. Or by charcoal tissue
and ... you know what's next.
Knowledge in wild plants
are always appreciated
whether it be for healing oneself
or eating it
It's a way to feed ourself with what we can find
and bring less weight in our bag
Moreover, these plants harvested right away
bring a lot to your organism
and give benefits to your body.
I won't talk about hunting or fishing
because of several controversies
and because a permit is mandatory
Nevertheless, I consider that a good knowledge
of wild animals is essential
to the understanding of the forest
even if it's only about observation
Once our harvested done
it's a real pleasure to cook !
We often bring only basics
Flavour, sugar, oil
And some potatoes anyway
and make delicious recipes
a free creativity
according to what nature gave us
why bringing some water
if there is some nearby ?
A first step of purification will remove bigger particules
while boiling the water
will kill bacteria and viruses
Thus, water is now fresh and good to drink
Won't need to be bring all the time
Finally, the rest of the time,
why not sculpting a bit ?
Every other kind of craft
including natural materials are welcome
Your only limit is your the imagination
So this was some activities of the bushcraft
an introduction,
a little part of all what is possible to do
we all have a different definition of the bushcraft
but what link us all
is being in the nature, a return to sources
Whether it be for a day, or a night
just prick one's ear, open your eyes
feeling this harmony around you
and try to be part of it one moment.
It's mainly about knowledge and skills, that we share
But these activities are not always authorised in France
cut some wood, light a fire,
sleep outside ...
So keep you informed before
and protect this environment
because we are living in it
in a sense a full living
So, are you tempted ?
because there is a lot of videos about
And it'll be the opportunity to go outside
See you soon !
